  1. So what you are saying is, boot into knoppix, get the kernel soure off the sources CD, and recompile it for my sytem, manualy building a new .config file?

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I have no idea how to do that. Some simple explanation might help. Also, if you or anybody knows the problem in the .config file, maybe I could just change that?

The last time I tried to make a kernel myself, went very baly, though I was going to need to recompile anyway because I have to make a slight change to one of the usb drivers in the kernel to get my pocke PC to sync.

So anyway, if anyone could post explicit directions on how to do that, I would be eternaly greatfull as I have NO IDEA, and would lieky do more harm than good.

  2. Also, if it would be helpfull, I have a copy of knoppix, (linux that runs direct from the CD) that I can boot up any time I want. It runs a similar kernel, not the same one but similar. It's technicaly a debian system, but maybe it could help if you knew what to look for. If you want, just let me know and I'd be happy to throw it in and see.

  3. Okay this is my most recent attempt.

I used partiotn magic to do the following:

    1. Secure erase my linux partitions. (writes zeros to the entire partition)

    2. move my windows partition to the end of the drive.

I then installed 9.0 gain from the retail CD's in expert mode, but let it auto allocate the partitions for me. It created 2 or 3 journaled partitions and a small swap.

This was all in the hope the it was the western digital error.

THis had no real effect, except that I no longer need to enter 'ide=nodma'

when that didn't work, I tried to chroot to the log directory and view boot.log. It was there, but it was still blank. I checked all the other fiels there, and most were blank and the others didn't have anything that looked like errors.

I also tried linux quiet=off, but it had no effect.

I know it's hard to diagnose a computer that won't boot at all that you can't put you hands on, but I want you all to know that i truely deeply appreciate all the help you've given.

  4. YEah, I'd like to upgrade, even have a thread going looking for modo reccomendations, but that's a lot of bread for a college student living on student loans. Unemployment is REALY high in my area and nobody wants to hire someone with a class schedule to work around. And, nobody wants to buy a $2500 cusotm computer when the economy is down and the unempolyment rate is up. So, I'm basiacly out of luck for now.

Maybe later this week I will dismantle my case and swap some drives around, but for now, I think I'm going to just keep looking for a way to make this work. I know none of my hardware should stop me from running linux, I've done it before, jsut something about this particular distro/release.

  5. Yeah, I've installed other distros that worked fine. I tried an older version of lycoris that worked fine and knoppix 3.1 boot perfectly and it has a newer kernel than 9.0

A guy from another forum is mailling me a copy of the latest RedHat, but I realy like everything I've seen of mandrake, except the bloody install. I just wish i could get it running. I tried mandrake expert but they are worthless.

  6. Great, maybe I will pick up a copy. I used to play T2 al the time, member of a couple tribes. Haven't played in a long time though. I got tired of trying to play on a dial-up. when everyone else had broadband (no broadband available in my area)

  7. I'm very comfortable poking inside my computer, (I build computers for extra money when financial aid isn't enough) though I'm pretty sure windows wouldn't run either if that were the problem. I'll check everything just in case though.

I'll try to reinstall without the USB hooked up, though I have to admit that makes me a litle nervous. I've never had much luck configureing hardware post install.

  8. Wow, htank you for so many replies. I think if I do pull together the bread for new parts of my own, I will go epox. Sounds like exactly what I want. I've always liked the soyo Dragon series for windows when building "show off" computers, but I've never built a computer for myself before, and I don't want to show off.

Sad isn't it? I've been building computers for other people for a couple years now, but I've never built myself one. Oh well.

  9. Here is a list of all the resellers

    http://www.lokigames.com/orders/resellers.php3

Loki is closed, but the website is still there. You should also check out http://www.tribes2.com and http://tribalwarfare.com AFter loki closed there was no way to patch and you can't play online without the latest patches. However, a few months back they did a "re-release" witch was basicaly one gigantic patch and I think they released a patch for the now abandoned linux. As far as I know, though I haven't played in a while, that was the last patch and another isn't coming, but you need to check before you shell out 50 clams, if you can find a copy that is.

  10. I can't say I'm surprized. Loki games, the company resonsible for the port, went out of bussiness a long time ago. Most stores have only had it as "remaining stock only" for a LONG time. I will see if I can find itanywhere, but you should know, it never dropped in price. Last time I looked, It was still at $49.99

  11. I'm thinking about upgrading my mobo/cpu/ram since I'm haveing trouble with my current one and mandrake.

I need a board that supports both duron CPU's and the latest athlonXP's.

DDR ram is must and 2slots minimum.

It also needs AGP, but that's about it.

I don't need anything fancy and I don't need anything extra included. Just a printer port, at least 1 serial, ps2 for mouse and kb, and built in USB. It's okay if there's more, but I don't need it.

My three biggest concerns, in order of concern - linux AND windows compatabilty, stability and price. don't care about anything else.

  12. You may be right, I assumed that the Amercin Megatrend BIOS meant an American Megatrends mobo, but I guess there's no real reason to assume that. I will try the alternate kernel. Though I should say, and I hope you can help (or your link can help).

The last distro I tried was a hard drive install of knoppix, whitch I loved, but I hed to leave it used a "one-off" kernel that wasn't available for DL and I was never able to configure and make a working kernel, so history is against me. If I use the "alternate" kernel, is the source available on the sources CD? This is the retail powerpac, so I know i have the source for the regular kernel.

Oh, and a HUGE THANK YOU to the both of you. Getting two reply's to a question like this takes DAYS at the mandrake fclub forum and mandrake expert is 48 hours when it works.

  13. These questions may seem simplistic, but please respond to them.

    1) How long before you determine that linux is frozen?

    2) Are you attempting to boot into x or just the command line?

    3) When you say locking up, do you mean that there is no hard drive activity, or that the drive just keeps grinding away but doing nothing?

    4) When the os is installing, what does it say about id'ing your peripherals? (Particularly the usb stuff)

Occam's Razor: All things being equal, the simplest solution is usualy correct.

    1) I have waited as long as 45 minutes

    2) X

    3) No activity. The hard-drive is not spinning. THe screen does not go blank though, it just pauses still.

    4) Everything seems to be reccognized correctly.

  14. I am trying to run the retail version of the mandrake linux 9.0 powerpac. I will try to describe the problem and my hardware in as much detail as possible.

The instalation process runs perfectly fine without errors reguardless of whether I choose expert or reccomended. At the end of the install my system is rebooted normaly. I first get a screen with boot options and then, after selecting "linux" the screen changes to what looks like the next normal boot screen where it says "INIT: version 2.83 booting" and then freezes. If I try fail safe of linux-nofb I get a similar chain of events.

    As sugested by someone in another forum, I hit escape at the LILO prompt and at the boot prompt that opened, I entered "linux noapic ide=nodma" This allowed it to boot further before locking up. It got as far as this;

    "INIT: version 2.83 booting

    Setting default font (lat1-16:

    Booting, please wait...

    Welcome to Mandrake linux 9.0

Press 'I' to enter interactive startup."

AFter that, it locks up again.

by removing noapic and just typing "linux ide=nodma" I get just as far, so I'm pretty sure noapic isn't needed on my system.

    My hardware:

Originaly a Gateway select 750 from around 1999.

American Megatrends motherboard with AMIbios, model not available.

    750mhz athlon slot1

    256MB generic pc100 ram

    D-link netowrk card PCI

    External serial modem

15GIG Western Digital Harddrive as primary master. 8gig win partition, 7gig linux partition, will get rid of win all together if i can just get a good distro working.

    LG 40xCDrom

    Philips CDRW800 4x8x32 CDburner

nVidia GeForce2 MX 32mb AGP video card

Creative Labs sound blaster Live! PCI

    Connected periferals:

    plug n' play moniter

    $10.00 speakers

    PS2 keyboard and wheelmouse

    Canon BJC2110 USB printer

    Canon scanner USB

    Waccom Graphire2 writing/art tablet.

That is all the hardware I can think of. If you need any other specifics I may have left out, PLEASE don't hesitate to ask

This system has successfully run an early release of Lycoris Desktop/LX and knoppix.

Any help here would be appreciated. I have tried the "mandrakeexpert" support that came with my order but it won't let me post a new help request.
