  1. Hi Wakish, Thanks for this. As is so happens I have just bought a router so I must have been reading your mind as you typed :-). Have yet to try it with linux but fingers crossed here should be no further problems... Not getting the modem to work with 2006 when I could get it to work with 10.1 was frustrating to say the least :-) BTW - Any ideas how I can prevent the pppo from trying to start during boot? Machine just hangs around for about 5 mins before progressing. I assume just uninstalling ppp will do the trick and not cause any other issues? Cheers Ozzy34
  2. I've also updated updated mandiva with the following: eagle-usb-2.3.2-7.3.20060mdk.i586.rpm eagleconnect-2.3.2-7.3.20060mdk.i586.rpm ppp0 still fails on boot :-( I've also come across the following post which hasnt really help (most prob due to my lack of linux experience). I have noted that although I stated that I didnt want the modem to start on boot that ifcfg-ppp0 states onboot=yes??? tried to do an adsl-setup but this wasnt recongnised at the command line. service -s didnt give me anything meaningful... Any thoughts?
  3. I'll try your CLI command in a moment (dual booty all the time). I did open up mcc and looked at what software I could uninstall. Had the options of ppp-2.4.3-9mdk ppp-pppoatm-2.4.3mdk. [edit] Also the same from the command line.
  4. Asking a silly question but how do I check for this? I'm still in newbie stage so have yet to find out package names etc :-)
  5. Hi folks, I've installed Mandriva free 2006 and am having issues getting on to the net. I'm using eagle-usb thats provided with the package for my sagem fast adsl modem. However the modem doesnt seem to be operational (I did manage to get this running previsouly under 10.1 Discovery so know that the modem can work with linux). I've done eagleconfig and am told /usr/sbin/pppd - no such file erro reading info about service eagle-usb: no such file or directory following is output from eagle diagnostics: Diagnostic (1.22 2005/03/20) driver eagle-usb 20060419142033 # System Information Linux localhost 2.6.12-12mdksmp #1 SMP Fri Sep 9 17:43:23 CEST 2005 i686 IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® 4 CPU 3.00GHz unknown GNU/Linux Mandriva Linux release 2006.0 (Official) for i586 Linux version 2.6.12-12mdksmp (apatard@n1.mandriva.com) (gcc version 4.0.1 (4.0.1-5mdk for Mandriva Linux release 2006.0)) #1 SMP Fri Sep 9 17:43:23 CEST 2005 gcc version 4.0.1 (4.0.1-5mdk for Mandriva Linux release 2006.0) # module loaded ? Waiting for synchro... Can't get synchro within 60 seconds. I've also tried to use the graphical interface to get things to work but no joys. I have noticed however that on boot that the 'bringing up interface ppp0' fails. I'm not that up on how things behind the scenes operate but I believe that this may the the reason for my problems. Any ideas how to move forward??? :-) BTW - I'm still pretty much a newbie...
  6. Hi Guys, Upgraded from 10.2 to 2006 and am unable to login at the GUI login prompt. If I specify a user name / pwd and try and log on the screen flashes and I end up back at the login prompt! I know the user name / pwd are correct as if I try an use incoreect details I'm told they are wrong... The only way I've found to get into linux is to boot into level 3, login at the command prompt and then do a startx. Any ideas why the gui login doesnt work??? Cheers
  7. OK I've done some playing... Booted the system in linux 3 and then logged in as root and also tried user. Moved .kde/ into an old folder and the during startX a new .kde is created. The gui launches sucessfully. However if I go and shut down only get the option to close session... If I now boot up the system as normal I get to the log in page where I can select the user etc. If I try and login in from here then the screen goes blank for ~1 sec before coming back to the login in page. I also tried creating a new user (booting in linux 3, logging in as root, do a startx). Also get the same issue if I try and log in on this new user when prompted at the gui login screen... Any clues??? I's pretty much xmas now here so wont have much more chance till play till the eearly new year. However I'll check to see if anybody has some suggestions. Cheers and a happy xmas / new year to you all!
  8. You are correct I have recently upgraded from 10.1 to 2006. I'm still a relative newbie so woudl it be possible for you to tell me how to log in when I cant get past the log in screen please? I think at the boot splash screen you hit esc but I'm not 100% what to type at the prompt (linx somehting I would assume). Also can you indicate where all the .kde file may be on my system please. Thanks
  9. Thanks for the pointer... I looked in my display manager and only had X manager so I did a 'urpmi kdm' to install, and then selected kdm as the display manager. I've now come across a major issue when I boot. I get a nice log in window where I have user names down the left, text areas to enter name / pwd and also 2 buttons (login and menu). If I log in as either a user or root I end up back at the same log in screen... ahhhh. How do I actually get logged in to the system??? I get a message if the pwd is incorrect. Thanks in advance
  10. OK I've been hunting on how to restore kde. From thi I've done a urpmi kdebase and this has now got my desktop back. However I still dont have any option to choose wthe window manager when I log in. When I go to log out I can only end session - not do a shut down :-( To shut down I have to log in as root and then type shutdown... Any ideas how to over come this?? Thanks
  11. I would if I could, but after upgrading I only get the options to enter my user name / pwd. I cant choose like I could with 10.1. I'm also unable to shut down correctly and only have the option to log off - I have to type shutdown in a shell. Dont know if this is related in any way...
  12. Hi Guys, I was trying to resolve my sound issues (see my other post), and during this process have messed up my desktop. Rather than the nice desktop with icons all over the place and a nice title bar I have a very plain set up and no icons. The menus have lost theie nice look etc etc, I've attached a screen shot to show what I have... Any ideas on how to get my nice desktop back please? btw - I'm a still a newbie despite playing for some time. Thanks
  13. Hi guys, Had 10.1 commercial previsouly installed and then decided to upgrade to 2006 using the free version. All went well during upgrade, however.... Sound used to work in 10.1 but I just cant seem to get it to work in 2006 (Ive a sound blaster audigy 2). Any ideas? aumix shows nothing is muted??? I tried alsaconf as mentioned in the other sound issue post but get the same issue [root@localhost Desktop]# urpmi alsa-utils The package(s) are already installed [root@localhost Desktop]# alsaconf bash: alsaconf: command not found btw - I seem to have messed up my GUI during playing (I will raise another topic on this), but mention it as I uninstalled Kmix and then reinstalled it trying to solve things. Dont know if this may have any impact onthings.
