  1. I don't have a /var/log/everything.log. This is what I see in /var/log/messages around the time of the last crash:

  2. Well, it worked for a few days, but my computer locked up on me again today. I had been using VirtualBox, and about an hour after I was done, the computer locked up while I was running xscreensaver-demo. This time the keyboard lights didn't flash, though.

  3. I'll give that a try tonight. Thanks, Scarecrow.

Then, please consider turning off the kernel tickless timer (which is on by default in most stock Mandriva kernels).

It's not sure that THIS is the reason of your hard lockups, but nevertheless it's a common symptom with certain hardware configurations and VMWare and/or VirtualBox running at the host system.

To disable the tickless timer, simply add an argument

    nohz=off

at the kernel boot string in /boot/grub/menu.lst

You can find several instances of that in the forum.

  4. I'm having a problem where my computer will randomly lock up completely. The scroll lock and caps lock lights on the keyboard will start flashing, and the computer won't respond to any mouse or keyboard input, forcing me to hit the reset button. Sometimes this will happen when I'm away from my computer, and sometimes it will happen when I'm using the computer, although I haven't been able to notice any associations with specific applications. The crashes can be several days apart, but they have sometimes been within minutes of each other.

    System specs:

Gigabyte GA-K8U motherboard (ULi M1689 Chipset)

    AMD Athlon 64 3400+

    PNY VCG62128AWB GeForce 6200 128MB 64-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card

    Mandriva 2009.1 64-bit

I remember having this problem with 2009.0, but it seemed to go away (maybe I was just lucky for a while). I don't want to go back to 2009.0, because I had problems with burning CD's. When I installed 2009.1 on top of 2009.0, the problem occurred frequently. I tried using the nv drivers instead of the nvidia ones, but that didn't help. I tried runing memtest86, and running e2fsck -c from a boot disk, but I didn't find any issues from those tests. I did a clean install of 2009.1, and I thought that that was working, but I had another random crash after about a week. I can't see anything in /var/log/messages or /var/log/dmesg that would give any reason for the crash.

I also tried adding the mem=nopentium option in the grub configuration, but that would prevent my computer from booting entirely.

Does anyone have any suggestions to help track down the cause of the problem?

  5. On my computer running 2007.1, I connect to my router (192.168.2.1) using an Atheros card (configured for DHCP). Last night, I was trying to set up a new router by connecting an ethernet cable between the wired interface built into the motherboard and the new router, and then pointing my web browser to 192.168.1.1, the default address of the new router. Well, I could ping the new router, but I couldn't get the web interface loaded, so I tried changing settings in the networking section of mcc (gave eth0 a static IP, manually set the gateway and DNS servers, disabling the firewall). I must have done something very wrong, because I can no longer connect to the internet at all, even after unplugging the new router, giving my computer a cold boot, and trying to run the network setup wizard again. Other computers attached to my router can still access the internet, and I can even access the internet when I boot from a live cd of 2008.1. For that matter, I can load up the new router's configuration web page when booting from the live cd.

Short of reformatting / and installing from scratch, is there any way that I can clean my network configuration?

  6. Anyone having problems (or better, solutions) with xfig on 2006 x86-64? Using the alpha version (3.2.5-0.2), the application would crash with a buffer overflow error whenever I tried to select a fill color. I tried replacing it with a so-called stable version (3.2.4-5mdk), and now I get, "xfig3.2.4: SIGSEGV signal trapped

xfig: figure empty or not modified - exiting

    Aborted"

whenever I try to select a menu option.

  7. I saw this game MarbleBlast on a Mac laptop, and I thought it would be fun to try out. I went to the websige (www.garagegames.com) and saw they have a Linux version. The system requirements specifically indicate support for Mandrake 8.x+, so I figured my recent clean install of 2006 x86-64 should work. Unfortunately, when I try to run the setup program, I get an error:

The setup program seems to have failed on AMD Sempron Processor 2500+/glibc-2.1

    Detecting libc...

    Binary file /lib/libc.so.6 matches

    Detected: os=Linux, arch=AMD Sempron Processor 2500+, libc=glibc-2.1

What's going on here? Doesn't Mandriva 2006 include glibc 2.3? Seems like I have it installed:

    [rblum@localhost Download]$ rpm -q glibc

    glibc-2.3.5-5mdk

Anyone have any of the Garage Games working in 2006?

    Richard

  8. I just upgraded my kernel to the vanilla kernel 2.6.14 (I had a gamepad that wasn't working with the Mandriva 2.6.12 in 2006). Now, the gamepad works, but I'm having trouble getting the NVIDIA modules to compile. I try running the build script, but at the end I get an error message that it couldn't load the module. So, I have a couple of questions:

    1. Do I need to do anything to the /usr/include/linux or the /usr/include/asm* directories to make sure that the headers match the new kernel? I updated the /usr/src/linux symlink to point to /usr/src/linux-2.6.14.(forgot the subversion) already.

    2. Do I need to somehow clear out the NVIDIA modules build for the old kernel? After previous kernel upgrades, I've had problems recompiling the same NVIDIA modues and have had to download a newer version which compiled without problems. Unfortunately, my older graphics card has been declared a "legacy" card by NVIDIA, and they have dropped support for it in any newer versions.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  9. So, I decided that this was a kernel problem. I compiled the stock 2.6.14 kernel, and the gamepad gets detected just fine. Now, my problem is how to get the NVIDIA drivers compiled. Anyone know how to set up the kernel sources and headers so the NVIDIA installer can see them?

  10. Well, I dug around /etc/udev/rules.d/70-hotplug_map.rules, and found the line:

    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{bInterfaceClass}=="03", RUN+="/sbin/modprobe hid", RUN+=

    "/etc/udev/agents.d/usb/hid"

Thought that maybe /etc/udev/agents.d/usb/hid would have something to do with it, but that file doens't exist. That directory only has two files, libusbscanner and usbcam.

Does anyone know if this is the right file to look in?

  11. I have a Gravis Xterminator Digital gamepad attached through the USB port. In 2005, it worked just fine; however, after a clean install to 2006 for x86-64, it gets detected as a 2 axis, 2 button gamepad. Looking at /var/log/messages, it looks like the driver for Xbox controllers is somehow getting into the mix:

Nov 20 22:23:30 localhost kernel: usb 1-3: new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 7

Nov 20 22:23:30 localhost kernel: input: USB HID v1.00 Joystick [Gravis Xterminator Digital Gamepad] on usb-0000:00:0f.0-3

Nov 20 22:23:31 localhost hal.hotplug[11532]: DEVPATH is not set

Nov 20 22:23:31 localhost kernel: usbcore: registered new driver xpad

Nov 20 22:23:31 localhost kernel: drivers/usb/input/xpad-core.c: driver for Xbox controllers v0.1.4

Nov 20 22:23:31 localhost udev[11542]: run_program: exec of program failed

Nov 20 22:23:31 localhost pam_console.dev[11556]: Restoring console permissions for /dev/input/event2

    Nov 20 22:23:31 localhost pam_console.dev[11562]: Restoring console permissions for /dev/input/js0 /dev/js /dev/js0

Any ideas on how to ensure the driver gets loaded correctly?
