  1. Hp are supported well and work well on top of that. Open up your browser to the printers you are looking at from you fav computer shop and check the specs and money requirements.. Then double check on HP web site or the linuxprinting site. I have one at home 4 in the office all different models, all work.. Choose the model based on your requirements, like speed, multi-colour cartridges The more carts you have the better, if you print a lot in one colour you don't want to be wasting the others in the same cartridge.. Speed is also a bit factor.. If you can get one with pass through printing (So you can place cardboard in the rear) then that can be handy sometimes.. (Will not bend the cardboard..) Just read you want Colour Laser... Big Money.. Once again look at the models you like first then double check the site after you have checked the specs you want..
  2. Not expensive hardware at all.. http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2005/05/10/h...wep_/page2.html maybe years ago it was but now days Johnny down the street can do it.. or http://wepcrack.sourceforge.net/ Dont be fooled by saying that certain things are too hard or require lots of money and hardware. Most things now days just take some looking and time.. Also think nowdays you can get linux running on a handheld then run some programs on them my take a while but the person can sit in your lobby of your office.. or sit outside your house in a car..
  3. Away for the holidays.. Anyhow now I'm stuck i cannot see any errors that are being reported for your fault.. I will have a look around the web more for you to see if anyone else is having or had a problem like this..

    I got hacked

I plugged a friends computer in brand new win XP into the internet and 20 Minutes later it was running like a dog.. Found it was fully attacked and spouting off attacking other computers on the internet.. At least with the linux we have a little longer to put in place the correct patches and updates and set up firewalls. He had no chance took me 2 Days to get all the patches and config correct, since the viruses and other programs were using up all the bandwith.. This is a lesson to us all to check and recheck.. I reconfigured my Tripwire and Checked my firewall settings, just in case.. UPDATE - UPDATE - CHECK - CHECK...
  5. ok lets look in the syslog file.. /var/log/syslog see if there is anything about the mouse or serial ports there.. or when it fails do the tail -n50 again on this file.. I will keep looking for you..
  6. Looks like its in German.. I will try.. Apr 28 07:35:16 laptop kernel: ACPI-0286: *** Error: No installed handler for fixed event [00000000] This looks like the only hardware - Software error.. Was this around the time the USB died.. If so try disabling ACPI.. I know you are running a laptop so you may not want to do that?
  7. Someone else said this somewhere else and i would like to follow up on this.. I was first given a CD of Lycoris Desktop/LX years ago before that i had some others but this was the first i really installed then used. I then tried RH and did not like it one bit. I read something on Mandrake and then got hooked.. Which was your first and how did you get it.. Mine was given to me by a PC shop owner, Who cut a few copies and handed them out to people interested in linux.
  8. as soon a the mouse and other devices die.. go to a terminal and get like the last 50 lines of the messages file. tail -n50 /var/log/messages > myfailure.txt Then post those lines from the myfailure file that may capture enough for it..

    I got hacked

Stop them dead next time by using a set up like this.. http://www.howtoforge.com/preventing_ssh_d..._with_denyhosts
  10. I guess you have tried these two things.. Try knights --help to se if you get any options.. and try it not using the root user.. it could be having problems with that.. or knights -v or kinghts --verbose these may or may not work or give you extra information.. Is this the chess game?

    I got hacked

Three things to do with the SSH Dont let root in.. Have a good password on your username and the root password. Third one is add a lock out after 3 or 4 Retries lock out the User on SSH.. Saw a script out there somewhere to do that.. what was the conversation last week someone with no password..
  12. Apr 11 08:14:22 laptop ntpd[4035]: synchronized to LOCAL(0), stratum=10 Apr 11 08:14:22 laptop ntpd[4035]: kernel time sync disabled 0041 Looking at the last two lines of the /var/log/ looks like that ntpd is having a problem not the USB there.. Look further up the /var/log/messages file. If you think it is the NTP that is causing it either try a different time server or switch it off to start with.. Are you getting any other weird messages....
  13. Which Widgets and in what context do you need to know about them.. There are Qt Widgets and if you do some programing or scripting you can use widgets in that context too. Check out the KDMScripts and the Dynamic Dialog Editor if you are just after making small scripts.. You can edit these files also with a text editor if you know what you are doing..
  14. May seem like a stupid idea but you said it happens only at night. Do you have any special programs running then accessing that disk. Or could it be due to a heat problem. During the day the aircon is on it that room then in the morning the computer has got too hot, or at least the drive... I have an external USB drive and once in a while i can overheat it and it will turn it self off.. Heat also could be causing the processor to lock up.. I have an old laptop that freezes solid until i do a power down and power up. If i leave it too long with the lid shut but still on running external screen.. Open the cover and leave it like that and it has been running for over a month no glitches..
  15. Some people say n o because they think there is no viruses for Linux, Sorry to say there is.. But further to that is being a good net citizen. We all download files share, send to others. The viruses can be found in these files then forwarded on to others that think it is clean. It is good to have protection, for your self in the future and for others who have the unfortunate inability to change over to Linux. I think it should be mandatory to have something on all computers, Not all are 100% effective but they will help stop the spread of most of the nastier viruses out there. Having something like tripwire is also a good idea. Which can see and check any file changes which you may not know is being done. Once you have tripwire and antivirus we should all use at least once a week to detect any changes and make any updates that are required. I also read the mails generated by the system each day to see if there is anything special I should know about.
  16. You may want to regain the space later look under the /var/ directory i think they are there..
  17. Back with mandrake 9.1 and other distros then I used Gnome, It seemed better and had more options, at the time but with a lower footprint.. That did not last long. I found Gnome on my system eating up everything. So i tried KDE for a while and found things to be much faster (Perception not sure it is true.).. I liked the ability to find how to change things easier and the Layout is so much more appealing to me. I dont want too much flash bang but i do like to have some even in the buttons... I use GTK styles and Font changer in KDE so my other programs using the GTK at least look more like a K app. The other thing i hate (Really hate) is the file open browser in Gnome, But that is me again.. I have not used the latest gnome..
  18. The more users you have for anything the more complaints you will have for that item. Thus complaints do not mean that people are leaving, as in the case with windows, Some are leaving but a lot just complain. Also it depends on what you want to do.. Mandriva does not position it self as the best for all.. If you want everything under the sun check out debian, but it may be more difficult.. When the Mandriva Club came out they said that was the death of the company but not so. Media hypes both sides of the stories good artices and bad, Bad get much better press though.. I am a happy user not Estatic every day but very happy and I am still in love with my version.
  19. I would not say it is on the decline more like not on the publicity trail at the moment. As each new version comes out there is a lot of hype about it then it drops off, I was reading a magazine on the weekend at it said are you sick of Suse.. Now that is more because the Last version is now over two months old.. Lots of people try the newer versions as the come out but most have a fall back distro they really like and are happy with, Trying someting new does not mean you no longer like the old one. When the next version comes out then everyone will say its on the up but i think it is more like all are on the up.. I stick with Mandriva, because i like it and i do try others for a day or so an another computer but not to really move but to see what else is out there, and when you talk to others you can help or advise which one they may like, as mandriva will never suit all the people like Red Hat and Suse will not.. And even some people like windows....
  20. open a terminal screen type cd ~/Desktop/ then type ./rt-nograv press the tab key then press enter the tab key should expand the name for you so you dont have to type it all.. then it should start doing something for you..
  21. MCC Mandrake Control Center. Under System-Configuration- Configure your computer. or from a command line mcc then select software management. If you have not been here before select "Select from where...." and then press the add button it should give you some easy options then after this leave that and go to. "look at installable..." the icon with the Plus..
  22. For the sound it is not muted some where and it is using the correct driver.. Assuming you are using KDE go into the System config - KDE - Sound System Check the hardware setting there and see it if gives you any errors or works..
  23. From what i understand in your posts.. First you want to control more than just HTTP access. The way i do it is using A firewall, like shorewall.. Then you can set each IP address connection to your server to have certain access outside the company. You can set information like from this ip and port direct to this ip and port. Squid will not do all you want but it can be part of the solution. you may like to look at this for ease of installation and use it looks good.. I have not tried it, I set up all my rules manually and have a very strict system. No one goes anywhere unless i add it to my rules.. http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_linux_firewall_ipcop Linux and the applications may really seem hard at first but you will find it will give you more freedom..
  24. Watch out with removing ~/.kde/ Better to rename this directory as it can contain things like email files... which you may find you want to recover later..
  25. Try the windows boot disk once you can see the CD then run the windows installer.. If not Do you have the recovery cds for your laptop.. You maybe able to download or get replacements from the website.. For you laptop..
