  1. If you want to do a quick shrink on a log file and not lose all the information that has been store you can try this. I do it when i have looked at the logs and just want to reclaim space. tail -n100 syslog > syslog this will give you the last 100 lines in the new file and the space will reduce. I have noticed with my KMLdonkey that it makes large files like 200MB or even 1GB but the file is not actually using the space, it is the file size it will get to but not yet there. try ls -sl the -s option will tell you the space that the file is actually using in blocks.
  2. I am sure that you can write some scripts for imagemagic to do all this for you.. it has thousands of options..
  3. Way way off topic here but what is that saying paul about michaelcole-ness.. Just a question since that is my name?
  4. Reading last months Linux Format magazine it mentioned that some of these require Windows and only windows which forced some schools to back track on their linux adoption. I would say try and see, but be warned that it may have been written purely for windows and Active X controls or other Windows only technology. Good luck, in your studies..
  5. "just gotta find that woman ;)" Now your getting greedy i thought you had one.. If we are keeping up with some of the latest releases then we must be staying partially young. I have lost the ability to beat people playing computer games.. Yes even my 4 YO daughter beat me playing the car racing computer game in the TV Menu, when she was 3 and did not know what she was doing with the car.. And my wife knows more about all the functions in the mobile phone.. I don't know about the clock on the VCR as i don't have one, but i used to be able to set them?

  7. Most universities have versions of Linux lying about if not the Department of science in the country maybe able to help. Here in the Philippines not many have connections but they beg friends to download for them. I gave away CD to people here so as they had the version easily. Getting the other up to date files and packages may take a while, but most Linux people will help you out. The problem in the start is finding a friend who has the resources to help you. Having all the Dev Packages may be nice but for most people they want to use not develop at the start, so they don't want all the cds. If you really have a bad connection try bit torrent or some other p2p program to download a copy they are out there just need to do a search for mandriva. I would like more Science related programs, and programs for children, so as we can introduce the children to Mandy, more often. (I do have Gcompris and childsplay)
  8. maybe if you set up a firewall and only open up connection to certain sites you have checked for kids only materials. Like maybe just the educational sites. It will mean you have to add lots of sites (IP addresses) into the rules file but what it gives you is peace of mind about what he is accessing from the bedroom.. (Later you could add access via a firewall with content scanning...) But also it gives him a bit more freedom. Therefore he may not bug you so much. Sites like discovery channel , the museums near you, the Kids tv internet sites like Nickelodeon. If he is into cars or computers then you could add sites like the car companies, and some of the computer companies. I would not just stop the interest he has but help it grow with you protecting him at the start. Further to that while you are in the room you can change the firewall to allow full access so you can watch what he is up to. (and then add those web sites as well). You can also allow for the computer to access the Ftp sites for the updates therefore he will have the ability to upgrade or install more programs as he gets older..
  9. Not the best and not the worst you could try Qcad. can export to dxf. Also maybe you can make standard templates of your items to layout for the sketch then you only have to drop into place, and even at scale.. Then for 3d rendering you cant go past KPovmodeler for some simple 3d images. I used the Kpovmodeler for rough designs of a Bar i wanted built for my house.. Just a few minutes behind the screen to really be able to explain it to the carpenter.. Example included.. Very rough.. I am no artist..
  10. its called a gesture. Check under System Configuration KDE System Input Actions Then find the gestures which are enabled and disable them there.
  11. This shows the item that is transmittingand receiving. Your phone should stay in that mode while it is near the source. or else it will deactivate after a few mins?
  13. ok looking good to a point.. You are sending out packets across the device it thinks.. I will get back to you later my phone just went flat.. Needs a charge.. But i dont think we are far from getting it working for you..
  14. Ah ha the IR and the Phone.. I have got mine to work using a different version of IR adapter and nokia phone. I will point you towards some info which will get you started. I am not sure you have the IR set up yet correctly so will start there. If you get this type of stuff your half way there.. If not you have to set up you IRDA. Check this website for full details on the setup. http://tuxmobil.org/Infrared-HOWTO/index.html Once you have that set up i use Kmobiletools or gnokii and for photo transfer (File Transfer ) Kbeam.. Hope that helps..
  15. As helmut proposed the linux.format mag is really good has lots of info on the programs and then some indepth stuff for the more skilled. http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/ I get it sent to the Philippines and the delivery is fantastic.. They have other versions as well for non-english speakers, i think.. The other one which is good and free is http://www.tuxmagazine.com/ Does not go much into things like the kernel but has some good articles on the programs.. This web site should cover most things directly related to Mandriva.
  16. first check your URMPI databases.. See the link in grey at the top Easy-URPMI Use that link first to make sure your sources are ok. Once you have done that all the files should be there for download and installation. A lot of the Devel files will require other ones but they should be there on the Download servers. Sometimes they do miss one or another. When i have to search for ones i use RPMFIND.net rpmseek.com It always takes a few tries to get it right first time.. We are all learning.. stay cool you are getting there..
  17. checking for X... configure: error: Can't find X includes. Please check your installation and add the correct paths! It is looking for some files that the compiler will need later. qt3-devel kdelibs3-devel python-devel Check you have these three installed the devel means these include files so you can make new programs. They are not very helpfull are they on their website.. .......... with a bunch of libraries. Which ones would help you.. i had a look at the file that you are trying by opening it up in kate and it looks like this is the line.. if test "$kde_x_includes" = NO; then { { echo "$as_me:$LINENO: error: Can't find X includes. Please check your installation and so the kdelibs is not installed (Development version)
  18. checking for gcc... gcc checking for C compiler default output file name... a.out checking whether the C compiler works... yes checking whether we are cross compiling... no checking for suffix of executables... checking for suffix of object files... o checking whether we are using the GNU C compiler... yes checking whether gcc accepts -g... yes checking for gcc option to accept ANSI C... none needed checking dependency style of gcc... none checking how to run the C preprocessor... gcc -E checking how to run the C++ preprocessor... /lib/cpp configure: error: C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check Yep you have got half way there i think.. Take a look at the packaes under the packages install for gcc-cpp It looks like the configure is looking for some C++ things. Name: gcc-cpp Summary: The C Preprocessor
  19. I think both cover up and rebel have a point here. I had to install a WIN-XP box last week it was a nightmare.. I went home so angry and stressed because they say their programs are made to be easy to install, but they really are not that easy at all.. Yes you have a GUI, but anyone tried the help? On a linux box i can look at the GUI's but if that does not help i can jump straight to a config file. 99% of config files have examples commented out. You just need to get in there and change the settings.. When you install linux (Mandriva), i do a base install then walk away while it does it, i dont have to keep pressing buttons. Then i come back and open it all up check the settings for the display and then open MCC and select all the programs i want, click click, Then walk away again. There are no stupid questions are you sure , where would you like what. Run Update and that is it.. Then add printers, press test and your finished.. You tried to get all the updates for a windows box, you have to visit every website for the applications, Not a single button, or command on the console... but hundreds of clicks...
  20. I was having some problems as well but it has been a smoother move than in the past. I had no problems with the Xorg stuff but with KDE items.. I have not paniced as it is working and i see there are more updates to be completed. I think what they have done with the X and splitting it up more is a good idea..
  21. you could allways try the force option.. down load the files you want to install. run rpm -f filename i think that will do it with out check for dependencies. Then test to see if the program works for you.. If it does good luck if not then uninstall... It has worked in the past with some programs for me.
  22. have you tried using the MCC (Mandriva Control Panel) to install Eclipse. You can select the Environment eg: Name: eclipse-cdt And it will install all the related files for you. I use Kdevelop.. not eclipse so just giving ideas. You have to, have set up your sources as these files are not included on the CD´s i think.
  23. Hi i need to record a phone line constantly then burn to a CD. Has anyone seen a command line software that can do this in Linux. I will also like to place a Big warning light on a Desk to say that the program is working / Not working. Any ideas on this function? Need fully functional next week?
  24. I have fixed it removed all dkms and reloaded all the then stepped through the dkms errors from manual starts. Loaded the correct driver spca5xxx and then added this to the modules file and it all works now..
  25. I have two cameras one used to work now does not using the UDEV but before it worked fine using the dev_fs. I have looked about unsucessfully to find a reason why i have no /dev/video0 or anything like that. In the past you would configure it under the modprobe.conf but now that does not work i have added pwc to modprobe.preload to see if that would help. It at least loads the drivers but i do not have the devices added. I have switched on udev info logging and cannot see any major errors, i can see the driver loading but that is it. i know your going to ask for this so here is dmesg and the info from messages.. from messages..
