  1. Microsoft has to do this or they will lose in the future. For Microsoft to see a billion computers out in the world without windows on it and given to every child in the developing world will cause an instant shift from Microsoft to other platforms within these countries. Bill Gates is not stupid what they will do is create a MS version and then under cut the Redhat version for countries he wants to keep on his payroll. What is the old saying keep your friends close keep your enemies closer.. Then they will use FUD to make the developed world buy only the MS versions., and threaten the Undeveloped world to use his version. I wonder if you buy a MS version will it be locked so it cannot run Redhat..
  2. http://www.squid-cache.org/Scripts/ Look here there are many packages to give you different reports that you may want..
  3. you should not have to redo the Internet sharing again it should be set up for good now unless some program gets removed or config changed.. On the squid not sure sorry.
  4. In your first comment you said you could ping to the WinXP box is that correct? Check your gateway settings on the XP box and disable the XP firewall settings for the moment.. The gateway should be 192.168.9.213 On the linux box as root type mcc go to the networking icon and select share the internet connection with other local machines. It should install any files you need and configure the settings for you after you go through the options. then you should be able to from the XP machine ping an external IP address eg the CNN one i gave above. and also surf the internet (With and without the squid proxy setting.) you can then lock down surfing using the firewall so it all has to go through the Proxy. try this... It worked for me in my other office.
  5. if you are getting a reply from the Windows machine when you do a ping.. then the windows machine can find the server.. The other thing you may want to do is add a gateway to the windows box which is the internal ip address of the linux ( gateway- firewall - proxy ) machine. Can you surf the web from the linux machine right now. the other thing is you may not be able to surf as the windows machine cannot find the DNS record try an external IP address. such as 64.236.16.20 (www.cnn.com)
  6. When you set up the proxy settings on the windows machine did you tell it the correct port. The two computers seem to be actually communicating or the ping from the linux would not work. Reason ping does not work the other way is that ping responses are most likely disabled by the standard firewall settings. To configure Shorewall you will find half the files in /etc/shorewall/ some reference files in another directory i cannot think of it right now. But you will see this in the files in that directory. 3127 or 3128 is the default port for squid i think. If you are not sure first turn off the shorewall type as the root user shorewall stop then test then restart it again. shorewall start
  7. Not sure if this has anything to do with it but if i start with my USB drive plugged in now days it takes longer with the lilo to load and then the kernel seems to freeze at checking directories.. i just unplug it until i see the interactive prompt then i have no problems..
  8. They were my settings and tested your site works for me.. I'm running kde 3.5.5 from cooker with all updates. konqueror is 3.5.5 as well.. im using on the java settings page security manager and kio enable globaly set I don't have any more ideas for you.. May think over it tonight..
  9. For the java after the bin put in java .. it is actually looking for the command.. Which site are you going to.. Is it that you cannot see text? I had a bug before due to java not looking for the fonts it just expected that they are in the old location.. found the entry for the FLASH under tips and tricks.. The flash does not check its directories for X11 and the have moved cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 ln -s ../../../../etc/X11/fs if you dont have a fonts directory there either do this ln -s ../../../../etc/X11/fonts
  10. Mine works the java i point to the exact JRE i want to use.. /usr/java/jre1.5.0_07/bin/java In the case with Flash.. /home/michael/.netscape/plugins/ so add this as a directory if you don't have it already $HOME/.netscape/plugins
  11. In KDE you have the skull and cross bones which kills what you click on ctrl-alt-esc also you have ctrl-esc which brings up a process table which you can then kill a task.. they may be slow if the computer has "Locked up" i have an old app which sometimes runs away and i have to kill it using these methods even if it is slow.. the other option is change console ctrl-alt-f1 and then log in here and find out what is happening elsewhere..
  12. Click on the Star. Select Run Command type kdesu konqueror type in your password in the box that will appear press enter now you will have a konqueror running as SU (Root) I changed the background of my knoqueror so i can tell instantly if it is the Root user session.
  13. I would go the other way start off basic with gnucash . Then as you find other accounts you want to track do so. It is a really good program because it does the Recon for you and has extra's for later. All double accounting is in and out.. Where did you spend it on and where did it come from. So also later you can see all your utilities vs Entertainment. You don't need to use all the accounts just start off with three.. (Your Income) (Your Cheque book) (Expense - Misc.) You can move the entries later to other accounts, even the amounts or do a split so dont panic at the start.. I have many accounts the different taxes and deductions but at the end of the year want to do tax press a couple of buttons and it is all laid out for me.. I said to myself why would i need a stock market account (I now own part of a company) so i ended up needing to track that as well. It also makes you more aware of where and what you are spending money on..
  14. Looks like they have a buggy code in the page.. I can run the streams if i look at the code and then use the stream it is pointing too.
  15. Here is my two.. First one is my daughter.. second is a modified version of one from KDE Image site..
  16. So i have two options.. Throw this laptop away or get KDE 4 and get it working i see it is meant to support the OSX dashboard widgets.. Started compiling KDE4 and will see if i can get those bits working in the revision they have out now..
  17. Whats those cheat sheets i like... ME want some..
  18. Well said i agree don't break other things, just adapt to them. Also for the business case for the Distro's having someone having to rewrite code each time a new version comes out is a waste when they could be using those resources better else where. I understand sometimes it is better to fork than continue, but if you are going to fork the application then really make a break from the other app and make it better so others can use it too, and know it is different. How many times have all of us tried to use some configuration written on a web site to find that it is a subtle change of version - make - model from the one we are using. This is not only a Mandriva problem but all commercial distros i have seen.. Even JAVA has this problem.. Check out their instructions for installation. You have to really read it not cut and paste.. (Why when they make it?)
  19. allot of the previous comments have been pretty brutal to start with. This is because you did not ask a question you tried to say facts. Mandriva 2006 with Gnome or KDe and all the X bells and eye candy will be slow on a pentium II or pentium III. These computers were nolonger for sale when 2006 came out win 98 was designed for computers in 98 - not 2006 so we are talking about 8 years of differences and extras. You can trim down the Environment to work for your computer. First try a different Desktop. Next give up trying to compile anything in the first week unless you have done this on another OS before.. Take small steps at first and it will work... Good luck which way you go 98 has no support linux has great support if you decide to take little steps at first and learn a little..
  20. Is a firewall required? That is up to you in the case with a friend of mine using XP he needs one. Do using linux. If a person decides to attack you for no reason or thinking you are some one else then it comes down to time. How long will it take for you to recover from a deletion of a database, an important file, or on the personal side those photos you took last year. I lost a hard drive sparks and smoke 40GB of data lost, or was it i was using it mainly as a back up drive but there were documents which i could get again from the web but it took an entire month to rebuild all the information i had previously. It was my fault for not having a back up of some of these files but i did have the important files in two places. Being my own fault it was easier to accept that the drive failed. Had it been an attacker, then knowing the limits of the law let alone the law will not get back your files, i would have been much more annoyed. How much does it slow you down, Not much if any. I use a older computer for the firewall and the network connections are 10-100 but the Internet is only 1 so i have allot of wasted speed there. The firewall Device (Computer) does not place an extra load on my computer in its normal functions. I get protection the various attacking sites that randomly attack Internet connections never get to my computer thus my actions are not affected except when i browse. Now i can get streams from websites download torrent files in record times and upload data to other sites with no real affect on my productivity. My home computer does not have a separate Firewall but the amount of productivity lost by having the firewall running is not affecting me while working locally but when i am on the net, I am not earning money from home at the moment so productivity is not a cost factor. I would always advise yes use one, better to be safe than sorry. I have a fire extinguisher and smoke alarms to protect my life and property, so why not have a firewall to protect my memories. To answer the Router question it does not get updated. But your shorewall / mandi can be every day. So the day you purchased the router it was already out of date..
  21. not sure but have you tried fg meaning foreground not sure if it works across different sessions..
  22. i use kmldonkey has torrents and other services.. Nice and fast each service can be configured. Some are slow no matter what you use..
  23. I did this setup on a 10.2 system awhile ago and had to make these modifications after using the steve parker script. the mgmt.o file is in the package.. On the startup the speedtouch Service was started and failed at one stage as it was trying to do some weird stuff due to the modules.conf file on Mandriva.. This line in the modules.conf file.. install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe usb-ohci; /sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd; /bin/true I modified this speedtouch.sh script and all worked fine from then onwards.. if [ $LOAD_USBCORE -ne 0 ] || [ $LOAD_USBINTERFACE -ne 0 ] ; then get_usb_module sleep 1 load_kernel_module "$USBMODULE" sleep 3 fi to this as below.. if [ $LOAD_USBCORE -ne 0 ] || [ $LOAD_USBINTERFACE -ne 0 ] ; then get_usb_module sleep 1 load_kernel_module "usb-ochi" sleep 3 sleep 1 load_kernel_module "ehci-hcd" sleep 3 fi When you first set this up... Disable the firewall and reconfigure as soon as you are connected.. The files required are... speedtouchconf-2.0_16_Oct-2005.tar.gz if you cannot find this i can send it to you..
  24. I'm a die hard advocate for the Konqueror. Fast and efficient for working. With the Kparts - plugins i can open a directory read a file click back, go to the next file all quite quickly. One thing i love it the bookmarks. I read alot and use kpdf in konqueror mostly, just right click open in new tab.. I can then stay in the browser, PDF reader, video player, text file reader. I have some scripts also even added as bookmarks and i can launch them quickly.. love it
  25. The flash does not check its directories for X11 and the have moved cd /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 ln -s ../../../../etc/X11/fs if you dont have a fonts directory there either do this ln -s ../../../../etc/X11/fonts
