  1. Here in the philippines the blind society has an adaptor for nokia phones for the txt messaging. They can then read the displayed txt on the screen and use the phones i think a lot phones have a lump on one of the numbers so the blind can find the keys correctly.
  2. They just got taken to court for Trademark Infringement. Cisco owns the name iPhone ... Woops who make that mistake...
  3. I would join in submitting articles / how to s for the mag / site. I read that mag the one i really love is LXF, Linux format, actually a good read each month with a DVD on the cover. I would require a proof reader / editor as sometimes my writing sucks.. The thing on that mag that i dislike was the jap styled article and no real hands on get dirty things for the users. Even the end users need easy ways to do things like a diff on files or use regexp to speed up their work.. On demand there is you just need to get a good way of distributing world wide, quickly and advertisers. The money comes from the adverts, not from the front cover price.
  4. Some one has his knickers in a knot over there.. God.. that is the worst collection of logs i have ever seen, "We dont get to see MS's." They obviously need to get a clear understanding of what the definitions are for each bug and the time lines required. I understand this is all pretty hard at times as i have been incharge of Service before. 1. Customer comes first. (Thus cooker should be second unless it is a Killer..) 2. Front end is what people see, Clean that and refine to perfection. 3. Don't speak out in public like that. 4. Refer to Above three items. 1. Security 2. Front end 3. Speed and functions Don't add speed or functions unless the two other items are first correct. PR is a job for all people we here are a PR arm as well. It looks like he needs someone above him to give focus and also assign help, on the back porting of issues. And untangle his knickers..
  5. if you just do a normal delete in Konqueror then you can always restore from the trash can, but it should be ok just to delete..
  6. You cannot see the directory as it it hidden.. Guessing that you replace username with the user you are using. you can see all the hidden directories by selecting view show hidden files all files or directories named with a dot preceding them are hidden. or just type it in to your konqueror after you click on the home button that should work..
  7. I had the same problem it fires up the error message a couple of times on start up and when you open certian directories. It has to do with the file type thingy you did if you go into /home/username/.kde/share/mimelnk/ you will be able to find the file somewhere there i think... This happened two weeks ago so i cannot exactly remember. it will be called octet-stream .... Delete it and it will work fine. the other bug dont know.. I use kmldonkey with mlnet.. with port forwarding set on my firewall..
  8. Happy New year to All... The CD problem may be due to me having a lightscribe CD/DVD Dual Layer Burner.. Not a standard CD-rom.. But yes i agree this is the risk one would have to take as you may have noticed it is Designed for Visa.. But i would say that Mandi and all those involved in the process to get the CD's out have done a good job.. Windows is a nightmare where can I get the patches and other items downloadable for this PC with out an internet connection? Like i don't think i want to click 100 - 1000 links to download all the patches required for the windows XP, and other applications. Whereas the rsync is a single command for it all..
  9. Looks like you have mounted the IPod with read only rights.. check the file etc/fstab
  10. I will look at all my settings and post them tomorrow..
  11. Did a manual download of the three files from the cooker. and copied them to a usb drive. I have no connection at home at the moment fast enough and now in the office is not so good (Taiwan cables cut).. Even if the connection was good the network card also NVIDIA was not detected until this kernel was used. I am using all the other files from the 2007 free.. I did a rsync for those files i use them in the office as well. Had no problems with the computer since then.
  12. Ok i know this i had the same sort of problem on my new computer.. Upgrade the Kernel to the kernel-linus version the latest in the Cooker. This will auto detect and fix the problem i think.. I downloaded the kernel the source and the doc file then installed each one, just double click and it should prompt you to install. Then reboot, select the new kernel in the list and it should work..
  13. I have a 80GB External Drive so i have urpmi configured to look at local files, On this drive i have a complete version of the 2007 repositories. For the kernel from cooker i downloaded the files individually and copied these to the USB drive. point a browser at the FTP site you use and browse the directories untill you find the files you need. From there you can just click on the RPM files and they will ask if you want to install them and then type in the root password. I downloaded the Source RPM file, the DOC RPM file and the kernel RPM.. Editing not needed as the RPM will edit the config for you once rebooted and tested you can then remove the old kernel using MCC and its associated files you may have installed. Once again editing of the boot config is not needed, it does it for you. If you want to have a copy like me check out the rsync command further i may post it soon in detail. I use it for the office and home, in the office I have 50++ Computers to deal with so it is really handy at times. And the bandwidth is not an issue after i have a copy i only have to update it once in a while. WARNING it is large mine is over 14GB of files.. Note CD did not work correctly before new kernel loaded, but not sure if that is because of the CDROM or the IDE adapter.. So USB is the only way to go..
  14. Got me stumped.. I had a file created and sent to me, and it also did not work. Now when i get the file i cannot click on the audio it thinks it is only a bitmap image. Next when it try to add a wav file or mp3 file to OO impress using the media section, also that fails and says that the audio type is not supported. I am using OO 2.0.2.92 so not sure if it is me or my version.. Will keep looking but i think it could be something to do with the JAVA and the way it deals with the audio streams.
  15. I Just purchased a new box for my set up at home, this is intended to last a few Years. So i Purchased the following asrock am2nf6g-vsta motherboard http://www.asrock.com/product/AM2NF6G-VSTA.htm Athlon64 X2 3600 250GB sata I drive 1GB PC667 ddr2 memory LG GSA-H22L lightscribe multi CD/DVD writer. Using the 2007 cds i was able to get a basic system running. After this i had no Network or Sound and the CD was not readable. I use a USB external drive for the updates and packages. I upgraded the Kernel to Kernel-linus-2.6.19-3mdv It auto detected all the motherboards inbuilt systems. So Network card works, High Def Sound Card Works CD Rom fully functioning CD-DVD Video Display I advise to upgrade the kernel to the latest available, I found mine in the cooker area, you will not get this to work correctly with a lower kernel unless you want to compile extra items in. For the lightscribe functionality you will need to find these RPMs 4L-1.0-r6.i586.rpm lightscribe-1.4.113.1-linux-2.6-intel.rpm I am running the 32 bit Kernel at the moment as i have heard that some companies are only releasing binaries for the 32 bit OS not 64 bit yet. I will be installing a second version for the 64Bit later maybe next week. All the applications i have run so far have had no problems, I would like the wine to work better in some areas but i think that is me not wine.. Need windows for some of my daughters applications (Educational Disney programs..) I now have in this total system HP Deskjet 3940 IRDA USB Bluetooth USB Keyboard USB Mouse USB Logitech Game PAD USB 80GB External Matrox Drive Toshiba USB Phone connector (USB drive functionality to Phones extra Memory) Compaq Smartcard Adaptor USB ZIO USB Card adaptor (For Camera) Maxell PM3 Web Cam USB 15 Inch Monitor (Nothing special) To answer the question does this beat Windows, Yes.. So far the winXP required me to install 4 CD's for the Drivers, and not all of the connected items work. This is 4 Extra CD's. Games I think it has 3. My wife likes to be in the linux she has more to select from i think over 50. If you move any of the USB devices you need to have a old PS2 keyboard about or you cannot get use of the USB keyboard (After plugging it in, the USB keybord automaticly starts to function). Ok you will now say but the programs for my daughter only work on windows, well only partially. Since they were not developed for XP but for win98 i cannot print out from the programs. She can only use the applications as long as she does not want to print.. Other than ASRock pushing Vista ready it looks like a good board..
  16. I use it and had no problems with it. In the case with embeded music files not sure how that works its a new one on me i will have a look for you.. regards
  17. guessing first that it dumps you into a command prompt at some stage. Log in as root then type the password type mcc This will bring up a config screen for you. you can then try different settings. You should be able to then get a setting that at least starts to work. looks nice a cool the system you just got a little like the one i just got. I would update your Kernel as soon as possible to make sure it detects all the hardware correctly. With mine i have to use a kernel from the cooker. kernel-linus-2.6.19 with mine it only works with the latest kernel, since it is using all Nvidia components. Nvidia Network 1Gb Nvidia Video Nvidia Sata II Nvidia High Def Sound.
  18. Use MCC Start System Configuration Configure Your Computer Select the Security on the left side Select set system security level and the periodic security audit. Select the level you want press OK.. You need your root password..
  19. To set up a rsync server for the official files rsync -auvH --partial --stats --progress --bwlimit=50 --exclude-from=/mnt/External/mlexclude.txt carroll.cac.psu.edu::MandrivaLinux/official/2007.0/i586/media /mnt/External/Mandrivalinux/2007.0/i586/media/ In the exclusion file i have things i really know i don't ever want, some are the language files and other directories, you will need quite a bit of space for this.. You can add an exclusion for the types of kernels that you don't want.. or other things. You may notice the bandwidth is limited to 50Kbs.. Nice speed does not kill any of the other users completely. I warn you it will take a while to come down, but this is perfect for offices.. If you restart it half way it only gets the changes... You can see above my files are on an external drive (Maxtor 80GB USB) I can take home and upgrade other computers with out any Internet. In the exclusion file you can add files that you don't want excluded . instead of a - at the front put + *dooodad-files* this will get all files with the line dooodad-files in the name.. You can set it also to have a maxsize. Maybe run mutiple versions get everything under this size Then only these files which you know are required but are big. mlexclude.txt
  20. I do the manual update of the compressed versions in the background in the morning. Later if i want to run an actual update of the system i run urpmi -v --auto-select There is the other command you can use which is urpmi -v --auto-update this will first update the lists then do the software updates. I think the speeds may have changed as the number of packages and dependencies have increased. Each time it has to check that the updates will not break what you have previously installed, more installed will take longer, also more updates will be available. If you have multiple computers to upgrade often it may be better to run rsync and bring all the files you may need down closer so as the Internet is only used once. I have an exclusion file which helps in this (Don't download all languages.) Also with rsync you can set a bandwidth limit so as not to stress out your connection or the other end. Only problem with this is you need quite a bit of space on the hard disk.
  21. First things first Christmas is not for a few more days.. Why she opening the presents now.. Anyway.. 22. Yep sometimes we dont chip into the conversation because we think it has been covered enough but if you need more help just ask.. We all have been where you are, at on stage. With all the experience on this board you should get a good answer from one of us.. Ask again. Tell us what you are trying to achieve, what you have tried and any errors that you may have seen. Sorry if we talked above you, some people hate being babied also.. If you catch some of us at the right time we will walk you through the operation on IM, So help is here..
  23. we had the same sort of thing in the office restrict programs to different users. What we did was create groups using "User Administrator" is the easiest Then after the different groups are all created add the users to these groups as you feel fit. Then if you kdesu konqueror. You can find the directories of the programs and then just change the access for the groups required. Then check that the files in the bin directories are changed also to the configuration you want. By altering the programs directories and the bin files you make sure that they cannot get to execute any part of the program you are restricting. Some programs will embed parts of the other program with out actually using the executable.
  24. My laptop is getting older now and what i have is a can of air you can buy at some good hardware stores. Every 3-6 Months give the vents a good hearty spray and clean out all the crud. This stops the computer from overheating in either windows or Linux, At least in linux it tells you why.. Windows just crashes or Instant shutdown.. Good for cleaning the dust out of DVD players and other devices around the home..
  25. Heart felt commiserations to his family and friends.
