  1. You probably don't need to worry about which file system exactly, But what you want is a file system that is not fragmented, If you only copy and not delete as you go along then the fragmentation will be at a min. I myself would go for FAT32 since it can be read by everything. and there are hundreds if not thousands of programs to scan a FAT32 Drive and recover Files. If you want a good back up system check out AMANDA it is easy and can back up to hard disk, Incremental or full. One advantage is without the AMANDA Client you can restore the files using the standard Command line. Same if you copy these backup files to the tapes or Cd's you can then use small commands to bring all the files back you need. I have set it up over 10 Servers, and it works quickly and reliably every time. I used the Source files from the AMANDA site as I was running different versions of Linux and i wanted the same version of the backup software across all servers. Even backs MS machines.. Don't use Cheap CD'S I found the Silver Foil peels off or gets worn after a couple of years in storage. I Don't use Cd's now for backups that have to last more than 3 Months. I use a External Hard Disk. Tapes Get the mold growing on them if they are not kept in a good storage area. If you use tapes get some of the desiccant from the supermarket and place it in a airtight box with the tapes. This will help remove the moisture, Now they have a new little bag in food items sold, it removes the oxygen, which may also help reduce the rusting and growth of fungus and bacteria.
  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACPI I am not sure myself about the ACPI causing the lockup. I have a case where when i boot i cannot use the keyboard or it runs off creating its own inputs, In the password box characters appear when i am not using the keyboard after a reboot. If i CTRL F1 THEN CTRL F7 the problem is gone so i am not really worried about it. just a bug somewhere. May be this that is causing your problem at times.
  3. Check the --ctime may work better for you, Once it has a file it should not get it again. # For some devices, --mtime might be the right one, for others # it's --ctime. You have to try it. # Example: TIMESTAMP_OPTION = '--ctime' TIMESTAMP_OPTION='--mtime' The Check box is to set it to run automatically. Mine runs when i get in range of the bluetooth it detects my phone and copies the new images off the phone. I have it also set to only look for my phone for that job. At home i have two jos One for the wife and one for me. So at all times it checks the phones. Maybe better to set the min time between jobs as you walk around the house you dont want it to keep checking every five minutes, Flattens battery more quickly. And you can set it to run at a special time like when your sleeping and the phone is charging, Makes sure you have all the files you have updated. It should get all the files in one go, not sure why it is only getting one, it may think it already has the other files. due to the timestamps.
  4. If you have the Bluetooth services installed in KDE you can go the icon right click. select configure services Add new job you want photo copy change the name. Select it to run for only your phone. configure it for your phone mine a nokia N70 is TARGETFOLDER='/home/michael/Documents/Photos' # This is the folder on your mobile that contains the files. # Example: SOURCEFOLDER = '/Galerie' SOURCEFOLDER='/E:/Images' # The prefix for renamed files # Example: TARGETFILEPREFIX = 'Image' # Target files will have the name Image2004-04-17_12:00:00.<extenstion> then. TARGETFILEPREFIX='' # A file can have different types of timestamps. This option # defines which option to use to get the correct timestamp of # a file. See kioclient --help for the available options. # For some devices, --mtime might be the right one, for others # it's --ctime. You have to try it. # Example: TIMESTAMP_OPTION = '--ctime' TIMESTAMP_OPTION='--mtime' # --- END OF CONFIGURATION SECTION --- case "$1" in run) export TARGETFOLDER export SOURCEFOLDER export TARGETFILEPREFIX export TIMESTAMP_OPTION $JOB_TEMPLATE_DIR/Photo_Copy.real $@ ;; } And your done, every time you modify a file in that directory on the phone it will copy it to your computer.. Cool ..
  5. Even better it is only showing you the application that are installed that have updates. So using MCC check the packages installed and remove the other languages installed. By default from the Live Cd install "i think" it installs extra European languages since this is a European Distro. Now once these are deinstalled only the updates for the programs you really want will appear. That was a good question since i had the same.. before... You may want to keep the french some packages have a requirement for this even though they run in English.. Microsoft -- where does it tell you all the other applications installed need upgrade, Each application needs its own updater checker..
  6. I find a balance of everything is better than complete exclusion from an item. TV can be good for some things and you can get a couple of educational movies on VCD - DVD to help with their education. On the computer the earlier they understand the basics the better also they have a sponge for a brain so it absorbs everything. Just dont let the little Australians or English use that horrible word COLOR.. I agree the 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme is soo cool.. I had her playing with Gcompis as soon as possible. Now she can open the browser go to the bookmarks and select the sites she likes. (Cannot read yet..) Then play with barbie, Poo, And other educational sites i found. She prints and waits patiently for the images to come out so she can colour them in... She has less fear of the computer than some people in the office..
  7. Cool My daughter 5 is into Mandy Spring.. Likes the new Background... Start them early, It will help when we get older and need help with the setting of the time on the Recorder..
  8. Check all have the 00 under them... have you heard any clicks from the computer at all? just to check do run alsaconf have you got all the updates?
  9. try this i had a problem with audio on my new laptop first check it is not muted. alsamixer next if that does not look like the problem try this create this file. /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base edit the file add this line options snd-hda-intel model=3stack restart worked wonders for my computer.. i have this sound device snd-hda-intel : Intel Corporation|82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller reading the Ubuntu Forum looking for your laptop i found this the line should be. options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=8 model=auto
  10. open the console type su your root password urpmi -v openssh-clients for the server use urpmi -v openssh-server
  11. Not actually plugged in dual monitors but it can be done check on the drivers for the card. I have both a External USB card reader USB and it works perfectly but my built in one on the laptop only works with SD cards at the moment the driver is being worked on at the moment. The Sata CD/DVD have no experience with them only the IDE versions so far. NTFS can be read and written to from linux.
  12. My new setup.. Old Laptop Dead at last, so have rebuilt from the ground up. Backups survived.
  13. From what i can see all that will work on Linux Both Vista and any windows will work with Lilo or Grub. If you want the Vista, but only for small excursions to use it think about using a Virtualbox or VMWare. You can then start the windows, under linux do the job you had to do and then exit. It makes life so much easier boot once, use the Linux as the system. Dual booting really does not give you any real advantage that i can see yet. I used to but the time of the restarts was just annoying. With my wife and child they use linux only now, and i have just added a Virtual Box for Windows for them, but the only reason they need it is some educational games (Disney) work better under the VBox than Wine at the moment. Also since it is small excursions there and back it makes the experience better. Especially since we all know some programs just will not work in wine.. I now have 4 Virtual Boxes, Some security, Linux from Scratch and DammVunrableLinux for Training and development. And with Virtualbox takes 10 Minutes to install, just select the packages, then start the menu item. Once you have it started and set up the way you want, you can do this to make it even easier. Start the Virtual Box and then open a console Type in ps -aef | grep Virtual You will see the executable with the options. copy that. Use Menu editor and add this as a new item where you want, Now you click a menu item and the VBox starts with all the settings you had selected. With no problems.
  14. I read the brief report but not the entire report. It could be as they said Red hat was not as good. They may really be referring to the entire package not the Kernel, as microsoft and other do. If that is so then they could be correct. If you add Open Office - Firefox and some other important business applications then put them against windows and the office suite then MS will lose hands down. So its all relative. If it is in an application the flaw it 99% of the time will not affect the Kernel, But on Windows 99% of the time it can kill the OS. Look at the Sony "Bug" java script:emoticon(':o', 'smid_6') where they Rootkited all the windows machines that ran the music on their computers. That is a MS fault for it being so easy to do. then so hard to remove..
  15. Click the button unmount... then configure. then press mount.
  16. 64 Bit still broke working in the 32 bit at the moment interesting that it did not work. Maybe something to do with the motherboard Manufacturer. Not just the type of audio chip. will look at it tonight.
  17. This has something to do with the kernel i know this because i have two kernels one works one doesn't and dont worry the version on the 64 bit did not work. I am looking at it at the moment if i get a fix i will send you. You can see the fun i had getting the 32 bit version working completely here. I just broke the 64 Bit Version so will have to get back to you when i have it fixed..
  18. Ours were all blank.. But the question from mandi is "should it use the RAID as setup and use the software driver to talk to the RAID setup" Still using the hardware BIOS raid.. Once you are past that question it asks about the partitions there you can specify what you want to do, we selected the bottom option "advanced or custom" not sure what it is but it gives you a display of what partitions you have and what you can do with them. IF YOU HAVE PARTITIONS IT WILL SHOW THEM THERE... We split ours 250GB into 100GB /home/ 30GB for /var/www 40GB for / 4 GB for swap 50 GB for our RSYNC directory (we rsync external mandy site for easy and quick installs internally) 30 GB for /var/ this allows for logs to build up and not disrupt other functions Up to personal preferences for the patitions.
  19. We did the same here. We have two HDD mirrored using a ASROCK motherboard THe things we did. Set up raid first Do a full reboot, (the Raid has to set it self up on boot.) Then start the install, install notices raid and asks, SAY yes. Next install it all. After double check where it is trying to install the grub or lilo. Then you shoud be ok. In our case it was trying to install the Grub on my USB Drive, (Where i have the installers.)
  20. Try setting all the settings in the bios for the USB ports to be legacy support that may help. It may be that the keyboard is slowing down the port also. Mine has 4 Ports on the back but with the ten items usb i have two hubs and then i have to plug items into the correct ports as some run at the USB1 speed and others run at the USB2 speed. As soon as you plug a USB1 device into a USB slot it will drop all to USB1 which they may not be able to support, thus causing the device to fail.
  21. Ok looked up your card it is an Nvidia Card. Overclocked. Have you tried downloading the nvidia driver from www.nvidia.com they say they support it.. To log into the box from where you are now press ctrl alt f1 type: root then your password: now type init 3 now type mcc play with the settings there and test. but i think the nvidia driver is what you really need..
  22. Being Stupid is the only way to learn.. Welcome, maybe you will help the next one, we all have skills we don't know about until asked. And somedays the brain just don't want to work anymore
  23. Once the computer starts up press ctrl alt F1 this will give you a terminal screen to start with. Log in as root then type init 3 this will kill the display and other programs not needed then type mcc this will give you an ability to change your settings.
  24. So it looks like you computers network isw working when you do try google what is the error that the browser display. Is it a time out message or a host not found message. If it is a host not found check you DNS settings. try to go to 66.102.7.99 this is one of the google boxes, if this works but the www.google.com does not then it is surely a DNS problem. Try adding 192.168.1.1 as a dns server so point it at your router.
  25. I would say that their QA is not good enough based on that. It could be that SUSE has more resources to throw at the problems to start with. What they need is to have lots of computers with different hardware to test the install procedures. But without a large budget that is hard. Catch 22 have to sell a lot to have the budget but it needs to work to sell a lot. They need to do a freeze on each of the Hardware related files and double and triple check, the next problem is Bios each computer has a bios and many are faulty and users dont upgrade the bios. So a single base mother board could have 10 different configurations just on the base bios then on top of that people sometimes set some of the bios options which then cause problems. Also remember it is not just Them with the bugs it is the projects that have the bugs and they just catch the wrong end of it
