oops... sorry, did not know that. It's just that all apps I used in Linux seemed to have a skin/theme feature, so I assumed the obvious...
-
Well I keep repeating this to all who care, but if you ever want a good place to learn more about your Linux system, this is an excellent resource to start with (that and the FAQ's and tips&tricks on this forum): http://linux-newbie.sunsite.dk/ It seriously helped me at the time.

Maybe here? http://gaim.sourceforge.net/themes.php Anyways, these sort of things you could search the web for it yourself (no offense meant). Like going here: http://www.google.com/linux then looking for 'Gaim skins' or 'Gaim Themes'.

Progeny's plans could make distros interchangable

I'm no Red hat fan, but Red Hat has not 'turned evil'. They just picked their path, parted crossroads. Whether we like it our not, ultimately it is their decision and it is a clearly understandable (although probably not very popular) move from a business perspective. Give companies some credit. It's not like they never gave anything back! -
Thanks for the link. I tried all of them, but it's just not the same. Here's a screenshot of Firebird running on my windoze box. This is so easy to my eyes. The tabs, menus, etc. all blend in so nicely with the background that they do not distract me when I'm surfing the web... Is there any way this skin could be used in Opera as well?
-
For some reason, after discovering Mozilla Firebird, I rarely use Opera anymore. Although Opera is definitely better on features and speed, Firebird has got a lot of details just right. I would put them on par, but Firebird still has a few quirks, so actually I think overall Opera is the better browsers. Ironically, the theme I have in firebird, called 'Breeze', basically a very simple low-contrast skin, is what is keeping me coming back to Firebird. I couldn't find a comparable one for Opera. Strange how such little things can have so great an impact. I can still say though, that supporting Opera would be a good step. I did quite a lot of browsing on the Opera Forums, I saw H. Moen at a congress on patents in Brussels and the feeling I have about them is a very positive one. Likewise, I am still doubting on whether to get a license, but I think I will, although I think it will be a license for Linux only. After all, somebody has to prove that Linux users aren't the freeloaders some people think they are. And of course, the product itself is worth it. Just a tip: from time to time they've got these promotions running. You could wait for them and get Opera at a better price. Then it would be a no-brainer, no ;) ? Darkelve

I am planning to buy some hardware in order to be able to connect to the internet from my Linux box. I thought a couple of solutions over and came to the conclusion the best thing to do would be to buy another Wireless Router. The product I was thinking of is a Dlink Dl-624+ 54Mbps Wireless router. will cost about €150, which is not really a problem at the moment. See http://www.dlink.co.uk/pages/products/129.htm So: anyone has got any experience with this router/setup, any tips, ... ? It's just that I always want to be informed before making a purchase. Darkelve (Maybe for some of you this seems to be overkill, but: - We have a wireless home netwerk, with an Intel Pro/wireless (2011b) Acces point, connecting to a couple of PCMCIA cards (laptops) and a wireless USB device (my PC, only works under windoze). But I will probably move out of the house one of these years, and then my family will still need the access point. As for myself, possibly I will need a (wireless) router once again. - Since it should not be a problem getting the router and access point to communicate to each other, all there is left is to plug the router into my PC's ethernet jack, for which the card is detected and works (Realtek 8193). - Possibly I can use it to play around with some more advanced internet settings. When I screw up on my router, it will not take the whole home network down, as it did sometimes before )

A gnome compression program? Maybe Gnozip? You should really take 15 minutes break between hours, or 30 minutes between 2 hours... :P lol... a super N00b! We need more of those!

Gqview is on the CD, in my case it was already installed in the 'Multimedia-Graphics' menu. Maybe 'cause the search is case sensitive? Gtumb is not. You can get it here: ftp://216.254.0.38/linux/Mandrake/9.2/con...6-1mdk.i586.rpm It's really nice for organizing your photo collection(s) oops, sorry chin808, I did not see this thread had a second page...

well... any idea why not? did it work under windows? Did you try the Mandrake Control Center, what network card are you using etc... etc...

Rescuing Data from Win98 by using Linux
Darkelve replied to Darkelve's topic in Laptops and Portable Devices
Well, ironically, just worse from here on. Maybe it is the combination of options specified at boot time, but now, even with failsafe, I cannot seem to get a decent command prompt! To actually get into a command prompt, I have to cancel an ongoing process (think this was also necessary before sometimes), but instea of a 'normal' command prompt, I now get dropped into a 'bash' prompt (showing the word 'bash' before the Command Line). From here I can sometimes mount my vfat partition, but mounting my USB stick did not work again. Of course, without this last step, I'm kind of stuck ... I get segfaults all the time and bus errors ocasionnally. Sometimes the output I described in the previous post, after which it stalls. Not what you would call 'stable'... -
Haven't got time to give a more complete answer, but there's lots of stuff on Wine at: http://www.winehq.com/ (see the menu 'support' and be sure to read the FAQ) Also, you could check out: http://www.frankscorner.org/ http://www.codeweavers.com/ and http://www.transgaming.com/ My advice is to download the Crossover Office DEMO on the Codeweavers website. It's mostly for running productivity apps, but a lot of other applications work as well plus the installer is really easy to use.

Fissy: True, but the internet is chaotic, and information can get outdated, obsolete, or even disappear (I think there was a great article on the Register about this subject at one time, called information foraging I think). With this chaotic way of handling information, information tends to live its own life. Rather than searching or submitting true novel 'ideas' (as opposed to mere disussions about existing stuff) Mandrakeusers.org, debian.org, gnu.org, opensource.org, slashdot.org, ... (you get the idea), you could turn to 1 place. Well, technically, you would still be on the internet; no one forbidding you to go somewhere else. It would often have that kind of information of prior use Qchem is talking about (was also in 1 of my original points I think). If such an item ever gets to court, can the judges ignore an archived website backed up by testimonies several hundreds, even thousands of individuals (yes, this is correct: it was there, we've seen it)? SK_pt: I think Linux would make an excellent OS for such tasks. But you are saying a 500kb Linux OS? Isn't that a bit small, even for the core part of Linux? I think if someone actually pulled off such a project, even if it was just a showcase product, and then leveraged the financial (yes, there *is* money there) and coding potential available in the asian markets, things would get off to a flying start, possibly even redrawing the whole landcape of IT! One thing I think that will be essential in getting Linux to the masses/mass manufacturing companies, is hammering on the need for CONTRIBUTIONS and at least mimimal amount EDUCATION for home PC users (with security at the top of the list). Evidently, open standars would also be a prerequisite here. Then, the Linux movement can prosper and perform at its best. But don't ask me how to do it...

It was probably just not installed when you ran the installer (for some reason). "gnome2" is probably the package you are looking for, I think. Most of the other packages are either packages Gnome depends on (librarier, scripts etc.) or programs for Gnome. Rpmdrake will automatically find out which 'dependent' packages should be installed and in what order (these 'dependent' packages are called 'dependencies').

??? Who would do a thing like that ??? Perhaps you picked the community support forum and got unlucky (anybody can post a reply here). Note that there are 2 different kinds of support. If it was the official support (you got 1 month with your discovery box), this would be unacceptable (telling you it's not there while it should be)! You sure you got no Gnome? You can download it from the web for free as suggested, but when bought, it should've been included. Maybe it did not get installed for some reason? If it really isn't there, where did you buy your box? Very strange... by the way, LILO only shows your operating systems (Linux, Windows and others if you have any). Do not mistake it for the login screen. Oh yeah... 1 other thing: we're here to try and help as much as we can, but we are not affiliated with the official Mandrakesoft company. Thought I'd mention it and spare the admins the trouble.

No gnome? What's the world coming to? It should not be so! http://www.mandrakesoft.com/products/92/comparison Are you sure you just cannot log into another Desktop Environment (at startup or after loggin out of KDE ?)

I tried that with Knoppix on a -I think- 128MB Ram laptop WITHOUT a swap file... NOT RECOMMENDED! sat there forever... then I just switched into a text console and killed the darn thing. Gotta love Linux...

Yes, exactly. Hmmm... there should be more of them (people are so greedy :P ) I really like what the guy is doing. What do they call that again? Philanthropist?

Mandrake 9.2 install hangs at 2mins left?!?!
Darkelve replied to randomnut's topic in Installing Mandriva
well, you could try to install in text mode. Maybe that will help? -
bvc, don't know if it's new, but there is definitely a command called 'X' out there. I tried it and I seem to remember it did about the same as "startx" (booting into GUI and directly launching the KDE desktop [i'm using autologin]), no idea what's the difference though.

Rescuing Data from Win98 by using Linux
Darkelve replied to Darkelve's topic in Laptops and Portable Devices
Okay, I got even a little bit more further  ... Although things were very unstable for me, with errors filling the screen, I got dropped at a command line a few times. There, sometimes things worked, sometimes they didn't and gave a segfault in that case. mounting my win partition usually wasn't much of a problem, mounting my usb stick all the more, since I had to disable almost all hardware detection when booting (I believe I enabled only swap and usb). At one point though, I got into a reasonably stable 'session'. Did an lsmod, which showed the usbcore as 'active'(?) and usb-uhci as 'unused'. Remembering what I've read on the forums (lsmod itself too), I did an "rmmod usb-uhci" and subsequent "modprobe usb-uhci'". I remember this solved things for me 1 time (actually I'm not really sure it did, I just seem to remember something like that happened). At other times, usb-uhci kept being reported as 'unused'. I was thinking about how people tried to get their ethernetcard activated, and tried "ifup sda" and "ifup sda1". Of course, that led to nothing. It did however, ring a bell in my mind (must have someone above who likes me). Maybe all was there, but just needed to be activated. So I just typed "activ + tab" to see if there was such a command. There was... I ran it without arguments first, which showed an example of how to activate a windows partition I think. Then I went to the /dev-folder and ran "activate sda"... which created a /dev/sda1 for me! Then I just followed the instructions from ... Motss, I think ... and mounted both my vfat partition and the USB stick and went copying. And it worked! Only thing: after copying about 10MB of data I got a segfault again. I'm going to retry, but I think with a little perseverance I can back it all up! It's cool to fix things! Darkelve -
Rescuing Data from Win98 by using Linux
Darkelve replied to Darkelve's topic in Laptops and Portable Devices
Ok, so I tried with Knoppix. I tried it on my PC first to get a good feel for the distro and the tools. I got further using Knoppix then when using drake, but I still get a lot of garbage (a lot of segfaults etc...), even using failsafe. Also I get a lot of "3xx Bus error"' messages (where X is a number). Still, it *did* drop me in a root prompt and I was able to manually mount the vfat partition. But still no sign of a sda1... in 1 of my tries USB *was* detected. So my question now is: how to boot from failsafe or a similar method using ONLY detection for USB? Or a similar method. Note that a lot of applications were 'broken' when I tried them. Any suggestions? A solution seems at least closer... -
You mean a little more like Lemon Meringue? (http://www.poe.org/lyrics/haunted-lyrics-lemon.html)
