  1. Can't wait to try it. Anyone know when it's expected to come out of beta?
  2. Serves them right. Actually, they have partly brought this upon themselves. Without their heavy protest, FUD and deplorable business practices, a lot more people might never have heard of Linux. But now, the snowball is unstoppable. And we owe this to everybody: the distro builders, developers, inspirational leaders, legal counsel, contributors, business partners, advocates, community forums and mailing lists, ... it's a real ant nest. Here and there I am beginning to read reviews of people using Linux wanting to use a windows-only app, just because they forgot they were not in Windows! To me, this marks a point after which the installed desktop user base is installed. It is kind of ironic that this speed of adoption and interest would not have been possible withouth the resistance to M$ business practices and of their utter and complete arrogance. These kind of events will pave the way for other progress. Longhorn will probably be specifically designed to play lock-in, but it will come too late... Speaking about DRM, I read that Outlook had an option to only enable the mail sent to be read, to be destroyed after a while, not to be printed, etc. Say someone sends this to a Linux email client (let's say Evolution or Thunderbird), what would happen then? Anyways, cheers for Mandrake, I hope they get the contract !
  3. Yeah, it's a Monkey Island gag :) But of course y'all already knew that ;)
  4. Tried Lindows OS yesterday. Looked very slick. Very nice icons, window decoration is a bit over the top in my opinion. Nicely organized too with good standard applications. Your mom&pop could definitely use this. It did not automatically mount my windows drives, but I was able to add them by 'create new disk' from the KDE menu. I was relieved to when I finally found the program "konsole" included. It's pretty much hidden, but it is there. Also found a wireless USB ethernet card very similar to the Intel one I use now on www.lfriendly.com: http://lindows.pricegrabber.com/search_get...masterid=405980 I'm still wondering if it'll really work. Setting it up won't be too much of a problem, KwifiManager seems very capable of that, but it's about the drivers I have doubts... anyway if it's not it shouldn't be on the website I guess. 2 things I did not like: 1. The Fonts Lindows uses in OpenOffice (1.0.3) are butt-ugly. 2. I have no sound. I think it did not detect my soundcard (yes, I did put the volume up), so that was a big turn-off. Mandrake did recognize it. Unfortunately, I temporarily deleted Mandrake to make room for Lindows (I also thought eventual triple-booting would go better when installing the Mandrake system last). Knoppix, which is based on Debian, recognized it as well. I think it was an nvia (Nvidia?) soundcard, or an nforce-audio?? How would you recommend to solve this? Darkelve

  6. Hey, Gowator, me too! I want to support free (as in speech) software where I can. Plus this was a perfect excuse for me to actually be able to try out Lindows. Maybe it's not so bad ;) I am getting so tired of having to install almost everything manually: programs, games, etc. yeah the top programs (e.g. openoffice) have decent installers, but otherwise its ./configure, make and fingers crossed... Plus if I really cannot use it I can always give it to s.o. else (also thinking about my mom, maybe I can find a cheap computer for her to install it on). Darkelve
  7. roland, dunno if you noticed yet, but I made an attempt to improve it in said post. Darkelve
  8. Okay, here goes. I used a lot of your translation roland. Also, where I was in doubt, I put square brackets [] to put my remarks. My main gripe is that I do not have a dictionary handy, so not every word got translated. Still I hope this to be an improvement to your already decent article. Note: text is translated liberally (as opposed to litterally).
  9. Yeah, and according to Windoze, they need minimum 256 RAM to run winXP and Internet Exploiter (probably will be 512 for Longhorn) and a minimum HD of 40GB to store their letters.... I also wonder: if you make an effort, can you make LindowsOS secure (no trolling intended)?
  10. roland, I'll get to it immediately when I have got the time. Probably tomorrow. Having fun with a friend long time no seen now... sorry ;)
  11. Actuall I'm not really sure I understand your question (I'm really a total n00b to many software and hardware issues). I suppose you are talking about the same Centrino chipsets they are also pushing for laptops nowadays? You can follow the links I put in my first posts if you are interested. Also, for your convenience, I included the README file found with the driver itself. Darkelve README
  12. Guess it was too soon to cheer: Native PCI cards using Prism2.5/3 are also supported, but USB cards based on Prism2.5/3 chipset are not supported in this version. This wireless networking thingy is too complicated for me... :( Guess I'll go back to my quest for hardware that will work.
  13. I thought getting my Linux box up with my current hardware (intel pro/wireless usb device) was a hopeless task. But today I did some more research and came up with the following resources: This page: http://www.linux-wlan.org/docs/wlan_adapters.html states the driver to use is a driver for the "Prism2/2.5/3" chipset. This page indicates that MacOSx can run it as well: http://www.binaervarianz.de/projekte/progr...ardwarelist.php indicated the product can work on MacOSx with the "Intersil Prism2 USB" drivers, which means BDS can run it, which must mean Linux can run it as well! After some more googling I found the drivers themselves http://hostap.epitest.fi/ Sure enough, the pages explicitly state 'Intel WUD 2011b', which basically translates to 'Intel (Pro/)Wireless 2011b USB Device'. Must be the same ones, yet I never realized it! :woops: Is this too good to be true? Did I miss the catch (the installation, perhaps)? Going to try it this very evening! I'll be in touch! Darkelve
  14. This is really disgusting. Even though I would not trust M. Robertson with my own mother, he really makes a good case for Linux in this article. Never imagined the man would actually be beneficial for Linux. Then again, Linux *is* what his business is all about. http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/51/34462.html This brings me to another point: I'm posting this link to keep people informed, but if everyone already reads The Register, then there's not much use to, is there? So, do you read 'El Reg'? Darkelve
  15. Actually, this 'trick' is exactly what Mandrake tries to do in their 'discovery' edition: http://www.mandrakesoft.com/products/92/discovery I am quite intrigued by the possibilities for Linux in e.g. Cybercafés and such. Your hardware will stay expensive, but the OS costs virtually nothing and the cost gains through ease of administration, avoidance of worms and viruses, no licenses to perpetually renew, ... (not to mention free software) could give you a real competitive advantage in such an environment IMHO. Anyway, nice job!
  16. Thanks, I don't mind proprietary products myself in this case, as long as it works efficiently under Linux. In the following document, http://www.dlink.co.uk/binaries/misc_binar...ies/DI-624+.pdf there are the lines: "IP Number Self-identification: Through DHCP client" under the heading 'router'. Does that mean, (I want to know this) that it can accept dhcp requests/leases (whatever they're called)?
  17. ... chaotic. But just (like in: fair). The chaotic part is where user 1 and 2 tell their experiences and give 2 totally different recommendations. Conflicting opinions can make a very nice review process, but because of the lack of context in both evaluations, you find yourself more confuses then before the article... and I am actually using Mandrake.
  18. okay, I guess what I *really* need to know is if this product (this particular product and products like this in general) can accept dhcp leases from my (intel) wireless access point, not just send them. Darkelve
  19. Hey, I have 80GB to split up and one WinXP to delete (well, not yet, but I can see it coming)! What can I say? Mandy was my first love, and she will be my last... will be in my boot menu from the future... and my bootmenu from the past... sorry, got a little carried away there!
  20. Ah yeah, I am considering buying it, seems like a worthy project to support. I checked out their website and they seem to offer *a lot* of value for their money. Actually I think Xandros is one of those distro's you do not have to know a lot about Linux to get it working/make it work for you. And if it does, it seems the Xandros support if far more professional than e.g. MandrakeExpert (even if you are paying. My guess is that on MandrakeExpert, everyone is just too darn busy with other projects/work to give decent answers). On a side note, the text (sales pitch ;) ) on Xandros' website is one of the best I have aver seen on any website: concrete, to the point, honest, concise, .... A distro based on Debian that requires no constant tweaking (and if it does, offers good support), offers free upgrades, includes Crossover Office and has good wallpapers is a winner to me! Version 2.1 is shipping this month I read. On the other hand, without all of the issues present in Mandrake, I probably will not get that valuable experience learning Linux. I know it's kind of a paradox, but think about it: you learn a lot from fixing things and from your own mistakes. Mandrake gives you plenty of opportunity for that... ok so I'm only being half serious here. End of rant Darkelve
  21. http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/34386.html kick-ass! I mean, let's kick their ass!
  22. Why are you saying that? I thought they had a reasonably good reputation when it came to networking and Linux. I was just considering buying a wireless router from them. See the following post: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?sho...topic=10049&hl=
  23. I hear a lot of people going on that Sun is nuts, ..., dying even. They probably did not read or hear the stories about Sun shipping loads of Java desktops to countries and big companies/organizations! :deal:
