  1. I haven't had such problems so far. Do you have all updates installed ? do you have 3D-Desktop effects enabled ? do the problems occur with a specific theme ?
  2. afaik ndiswrapper is only used for wireless network devices, I don't know if it can be used for sound diveces, but I don't think so. Maybe you could try the Intel HDA driver, since the new Macs seem to be mainly built on Intel Hardware the wget and/or curl errors could be timeouts because of your internet connection problems, have you tried how it works through wired network ?
  3. Don't know for Mandriva 2006, but 2007/Spring and 2008 all recognize both my RAZR 3i and 3xx without problems, they show up as USB-Devices, I can copy data from/to them just like any ordinary USB-Stick btw. even in Windows I do not need the software, since the Phones are handled like a standard USB-Device (I can access them through the file-manager), the software is mainly for calendar and mail synchronisation.
  4. May it rest in peace. It was the first browser for me too, and I never could understand what should be so much better with wintelnet exploder. I did my first crude html-steps with composer, the sites did not look great but at least they worked.
  5. maybe the fire wall somehow blocks 127.0.0.1, I had such a problem some time ago after messing around with kmyfirewall, gnome was dog-slow until I shut down iptables completely, have you tried this, what is the effect ?
  6. Sorry, seems I didn't see your post (not that it was easy to overlook ). Just out of couriosity, have you tried the gnome version, sounds very interesting old myths die slowly, Mandriva is still considered a KDE-Distro, which is not really true anymore, seems to be the same here.
  7. if you have setup online repositories there should be a package called kernel-source-2.6.22.12-1mdv or kernel-source-latest
  8. sorry, seems I didn't read your first post carefully enough, you always wrote it. don't know how to make them "visible", if they don't give keycodes
  9. Dec 29 13:04:26 localhost sudo: dude67 : TTY=unknown; PWD=/home/dude67; USER=root; COMMAND=/usr/sbin/firestarter --start-hidden seems it still tries to start firestarter
  10. It's the new COOL distro on Distrowatch after Ubuntu got boring. (Sorry couldn't resist) Now serious: It started as a spin-off of Mandriva 9.2 I think, but it now went its own way, although imho it is still very mandriva-like in many ways, main difference is it is kde-centric (beware you gnome-lovers out there) and for all the urpmi-haters out there it uses apt/synaptic for package management. It was more polished and had better looks than previous versions of mandy and sometimes (most of the time) the kde-version it used was newer. ah sorry, forgot the <cynism></cynism> tags.
  11. there are progs like klineakd, acme and the like that may help you with your multimedia-keys, for the mouse I think imwheel might help
  12. Finally found a (semi)-dark theme that is usable (at least for me), still not perfect (tear-offs for menus in gimp not shown correctly, in firefox menu-bar is not coloured as it should) but better than nothing. http://vt102.deviantart.com/art/December-Screen-72793489
  13. I have gstreamer-plugins-base/good/ugly installed and so far could watch every type of video in totem and kaffeine (quicktime, avi, windows media all work), I didn't even need the win32-codecs from plf. It seems your problem is not related to the codecs, maybe more to your graphics-system. Do you have 3d-desktop effects enabled ? maybe this poses a problem look here: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandr..._video_playback
  14. the mentioned files (build dependencies) are needed to build the rpm, you just need to install them through rpmdrake and then try again
  15. kernel headers are in the kernel-devel package, kernel-source contains the complete kernel source-code
  16. that is a good question, this is definitely not normal I did not need to configure anything on my notebook normally you just have to make sure that your swap partition is at least the size of your physical RAM (afaik recommended is 30 % more than physical RAM) for Suspend-to-Disk
  17. yes, the resume device should be your swap partition; at least if you want to have a working Suspend-to-Disk, for Suspend-to-RAM you don't need such a thing
  18. for me 32 bit FF 2.0.0.11 with JRE 6u3 (RPM directly from Sun) works flawless and much faster than every version before have you deinstalled the old libmozilla-firefox ?, don't know why but whenever I upgrade firefox through mandriva-repos the old lib doesn't get deinstalled
  19. Maybe you should try vga=776 for me it only works in this resolution setting, everything else leads to a boot as you described (no bootsplash, console/boot messages rolling by)

    Fn Keys

synaptic should show which packages are installed, you can look in the descriptions of the packages, yes I know there are many packages to look at, but you could ignore libraries, locales, I don't think that it will be there, maybe you will find a package. btw have you already looked on notebook-specific sites like http://tuxmobil.org/ ?
  21. for me bootsplash only works if I set the size of the splash screen to 800x600, if I set it to a higher resolution it does not work

    Fn Keys

not functioning Fn keys is not directly related to acpi, I have a fully working acpi on my thinkpad, but I still don't have all Fn keys working, have you tried hotkey, lineakd or keyfuzz packages, they are for the multimedia keys on some keyboards, but maybe they work with notebooks too other way would be to find out what packages are on the ubuntu live cd and which of them controls the keys
  23. Maybe it's just the liveCD, I could not get Mandriva One to run on one of my systems, while a normal installation went fine. You have already tried with acpi disabled ?
  24. afaik sgid-today should be overwritten everytime msec makes its security-check, therefore such a large file is definitely not normal.
  25. Have you tried starting with the noapic kernel parameter ?
