  1. Ok, I think I have figured out the MAIN part and can now see the server and play music from it!! Lots more reading, lots more digging and finally found what I was looking for when I read the urpmi distribution note for the 30th time... avahi.. Looks like all I had to do was create a service file to let it know to broadcast. Does an admin want to mark this as solved? One comment line about configuring avahi in the distribution would be of great help, or the distribution having the service file.. <?xml version="1.0" standalone='no'?> <!DOCTYPE service-group SYSTEM "avahi-service.dtd"> <service-group> <name replace-wildcards="yes">%h</name> <service> <type>_daap._tcp</type> <port>3689</port> </service> </service-group>
  2. I installed the application from MCC and it appeard to install fine and I am able to start it. Everything actually looks pretty good except the main thing... I can't seem to see it from anything :) I am able to access the web page from anywhere on the network in the house. I have tried to see the server with Amarok running on the same machine, iTunes on windows boxes in the house and Winamp with DAAP plugin on windows boxes, nothing wants to see it. the avahi-daemon appears to be running and on boot it looks like everything registers (well, nothing fails, but I don't now what I should see) Log file from a start as root: 2009-12-29 13:45:11 (b739c6c0): Firefly Version svn-1696: Starting with debuglevel 5 2009-12-29 13:45:11 (b739c6c0): Loaded plugin /usr/lib/mt-daapd/plugins/rsp.so (rsp/svn-1696) 2009-12-29 13:45:11 (b739c6c0): Loaded plugin /usr/lib/mt-daapd/plugins/ssc-script.so (ssc-script/svn-1696) 2009-12-29 13:45:11 (b739c6c0): Loaded plugin /usr/lib/mt-daapd/plugins/out-daap.so (daap/svn-1696) 2009-12-29 13:45:11 (b739c6c0): Plugin loaded: daap/svn-1696 2009-12-29 13:45:11 (b739c6c0): Plugin loaded: ssc-script/svn-1696 2009-12-29 13:45:11 (b739c6c0): Plugin loaded: rsp/svn-1696 2009-12-29 13:45:11 (b739c6c0): Starting signal handler 2009-12-29 13:45:11 (b739c6c0): Initializing database 2009-12-29 13:45:14 (b739c6c0): Starting web server from /usr/share/mt-daapd/admin-root on port 3689 2009-12-29 13:45:14 (b739c6c0): Listening on port 3689 2009-12-29 13:45:14 (b739c6c0): Starting server thread 2009-12-29 13:45:14 (b739c6c0): Serving 6008 songs. I don't see it in the package if I were to build from scratch either. Any help or what I should look for would be greatly appreciated!
  3. When I log in, eventually I will get a prompt that says: The only thing I have done is log into my user account. When I go to System Monitor it appears the the prompt is tied to consolehelper -g that is running as me and is linked to mdkapplet. From what I can tell this is part of the update notifier... I can understand needed the elevated privledges to run the updates but it almost appears like doing the check is even making it ask. Any and all help is appreciated.
  4. THANKS, been on most the day and no upgrade nag! Now time for the next post and the last funny thing (this has been there since before the upgrade)
  5. Finally back home after 3-4 weeks... [travis@TAS-Server ~]$ ll /var/lib/urpmi | egrep -i upgrade -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2009-07-21 11:25 stale_upgrade_in_progress looks like this is from the FIRST failed update based on the date.
  6. I am still being told that a new Distribution is available, '2009 Spring'. I ran the line to update the repositories... Any other ideas?

It all appears to be working and I don't have the update icon yet in the task panel. Boot up now looks ok and I get nothing but [ok] next to the services that are starting. I will use it today and keep logged on to see if anything odd happens. For some reason I had two App Lanchers in the task panel, but I just removed one of them. THANKS for all the help so far!
  8. After the update the system came back up and I can log in, although I am still being told there is an update. It looked like it was using 2009.1 for the repository. I am going to reboot and then check. How do I find out if I am running the right versions? (kernel/KDE) If I run mcc from my user no matter how (local login, putty shell w/X, XDMCP) I am prompted for the password. If I su - first then I am not prompted, how it should be.
  9. Thanks for the quick responses.. Thankfully I can still get putty to connect from upstairs (this just runs as my apache/file/proxy server in the basement). It is running the update... on 859 of 1395,thanks again, I will report success or failure when complete.
  10. If I am at the boot screen and I switch to ICE, I can login and get a "start menu". I however can not load any of the k tools (konsole/mcc). I just tried to putty/Xming in from windows and I can get the console and services are all running. when I try to launch mcc, I get. 11. I have been a Mandriva user for about 6 years and it has been great. This is the first issue that I am really lost on. I am a low level newbie.. hey, when something works I don't have to dig into it, until now. Yesterday I was XDM'd into the system and it said there was an update. I hit the update and it said it could not complete due to a missing dependancy. I 'aborted' and then went to add the dependency. I don't remember exactly, but it was libkde...4.2.4 or something. Started that and I got a failure. Now I can not launch KDE. All I get is: "Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation". I went into ICE and tired to launch mmc, but it will not launch. I can open firefox and other things but am real clueless on how to fix this issue! In addtion, when I launch if I esc to see the process it looks like it I am now getting a failure on the Nvidia load. I don't know if I was getting that before or not. 12. Well, here is what I found out so far. I created a test user and made the default group 'parents' on the linux side. When that user logs on now from windows it does pick that group. I also made the share create permissions give the group ability. I have to test that, but I don't see why that part will not work. Is this then the correct way to handle this?
  13. My samba stuff has been up and running for a long time, and I have lived with this issue but what to fix it... Machine1: user-Amy ; group-Amy Machine2: user-Travis ; group-Travis So, when my wife writes to the samba shares on the Linux box from WinXP, it assignes the group to her and I can see the files, but I can't change anything and vice-versa. I have a group 'Parents' on the Linux box that we both belong to and I would like when we write to the Samba shares from Windows that it use this group. I have done some searches and I must be using the wrong key words as I can't find where I would change the Samba user/group assignment. And maybe it is just a Linux side change where I remove that group and only assign us to the parents group.
  14. What am I missing?? So on Sunday I figured I would tackle reading the LVM 2 FAQ and see what I could get done. Well first I found that the LVM2 and DMSETUP modules were in the RPM setup so I installed thoses. After installing, everything went smooth. I haven't used dmsetup for anything, and after the lvm2 install the /dev/mapper directory was already created. I could also use all the tools... So. 1. I formatted my 2 disks as ext3 with DiskDrake 2. did pvcreate on both (/dev/hdc1 and /dev/hdd1) 3. did vgreate including both above 4. lvcreate -l 19082 myvg -n mylv 5. vgchange -a y myvg after this it told me that 1 logical volume in 'myvg' now active So things were looking promising... But now, how do I mount it! mount /dev/myvg/mylv /data2 => you must specify the filesystem type mount -t ext3 /dev/myvg/mylv /data2 => wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/... dmesg | tail => VFS: can't find ext3 filesystem on dev dm-0 Any help?? Seems so close. pvdisplay, and lvdisplay all look good. The directory properties for /dev/myvg are different than others, that is the only thing I see right off, but then again, I am now lost!
  15. hdc: Maxtor 6L040L2 hdd: Maxtor 6L040J2 close to being the same. From stuff I read it sounded like LVM was there during the initial install (since maybe version 9.2). What, if I didn't do it then, I screwed myself?
  16. Well, after my 2006 install on a new drive, I now have 2 old 40Gb drives sitting in the machine. I was manaully mounting them as necessary to get stuff off them. Now what I would like to do is wipe them both out and make them one volume group (VG) so that they appear as 80Gb of space. Can I use MCC and the Partition manager to do this? Do I just creat a partition as ext3 and not mount it and create the group after that? Any help for a newbie would be appreciated. I think 2006 has the capability to do this built in? SEE LAST POST
  17. Well, I should have noticed that when I did the perl Makefile.PL, it said files were missing from the mainfest. I looked and thought, they are right there, what is the proplem// Well, I modifed the manifest, picked up all the files, but same problem. The issue was CASE of the directory. I was doing this on a FAT32 drive and the case of the directories was WRONG and couldn't put the files in the right place. Moved it to a EXT3 drive and worked like a charm..
  18. How are you installing? I did the network install and noticed that the info for the FTP server was wrong. I had to change the /currentversion/ to /2006.0/ for it to actually install 2006. Wouldn't think that is your issue, but I stopped as soon as the first screen came up (after the boot stuff, which said 2006) as it said 2005LE. I just reset and found the problem and installed without issue. I was using the Indiana EDU server.
  19. Newbie here, but learning... I am trying to compile a couple of modules and with both of them I get the same error. I do: perl Makefile.PL make during the make process, I get Manifying blib/man3/IO::String.3pm Can't open blib/man3/IO::String.3pm for writing: Invalid argument at /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.7/ExtUtils/Command/MM.pm line 126 make: *** [manifypods] Error 22 I have tried two different ones and get the same error. The one thing I noticed is that NOTHING exists in the man3 directory. In the case of this one, a file called String.pm does exist in the blib/lib/io directory. Same thing for the other one, the .pm files exist in the blib/lib/Image directory. FYI, this is 2006.0 with updates as of 3 days ago, installed with the developer stuff (basically every checkbox during the install on the 'simple' screen) Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  20. Really area and time dependant. In my area (SW Ohio) they use: Motorola Surfboard's (has USP and Ethernet) Wireless, they use some company that everyone broadcasts 2wire as the SSID, nobody protected... VoIP, they are using another Motorola product. I have their hardware, but am connected to Earthlink as an ISP and it is $10 cheaper since I don't have cable. If I had cable, it would still be $5 cheaper.
  21. Connecting from Windows XP.. I did get swat to work, but I don't know what is different in the global section from the old install. Some of those settings don't appear to be in the smb.conf file. I can understand putting something in the LMHOSTS file, but I never had to before. I can see the machine in the network neighborhood, but when I double click on it that is when it gives me the problem. Also, if I type in just the machine name (from like run) it will not find it. I had no issues with that before from the same machine. This is a 2006.0 install and I had 2005 LE previously. I did not change my hostname in the same manner (but don't think that would do it). I put the HOSTNAME line in "a" file last time. This time I changed it from MCC in the general options. One interesting thing is from my work machine (laptop at home) I can get to the name, but it forces me to logon as localguest. I have not setup that account in samba. But I do get prompted...
  22. When I browse the network from my windows box, I see the samba server, but when I double click on it, I get the dredded "cannot connect". If I try to browse by name (\\tas-02) it doesn't find the machine either. BUT, if I put in the IP address of the machine it works fine. I did a fresh install of 2006 and mounted my old dying drive and coppied the smb.conf that I had on the other machine. What am I missing? Something with WINS? Lost... Oh, I installed SWAT, but that won't start either. I have yet to reboot since installing it so that might be its issue. THanks for any and all help.
  23. Well, still a newbie, but I had a hard drive failing so I went ahead and put a new one in the machine and did 2006 install at the same time. Went great, but here are my tiny issues... How can I change the grid spacing? I don't like that the icons are so far apart horizontally. I have no idea where the setting is for this. Has anyone noticed the 'new' (well new to me) samba config gui? It looks nice but it doesn't seem to work. I tried adding users and it acts like it works, but doesn't. I went to a shell and added the users that way. Guess Swat is still the way to go since this tool doesn't seem to work. (comes up as Configure - KDE Control Module) EDIT I found I was running the normal Samba tool (I firmly believe) but there is another one down in the MCC. It appears to work, but it doesn't show you the top level setttings (workgroup etc).. Guess I am really left with one question, how do I change the vertical icon spacing?

    Squid

Nobody? Is there a better place to post this? I hate to go to 20 different forums and my googling and reading this forum has solved my Samba config issues, XDM, ssh, and update issues - all without having to post (well one). Thanks again.

    Squid

Newbie here... I finnaly sat down and got squid running. I use it so that when I am VPN'd into work I can set my Windows/Firefox proxy to that machine and all external requests will go through me instead of up and out the corporate firewall. Now, it is working, but I went to an https page (amex corp card) and I received an error. I guess I don't know how to set it up properly to allow this access. I do not completly understand the 'proxy', but I think I need to either set a tunnel or set a certificate on my machine so that it can authorize the data, completely unsure how to do what I want to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I have shorewall turned off currently, behind my router and not much opened yet. Want to get everything working then start the firewall back up) [moved from Software by spinynorman]
