  1. Birmingham trials Linux in 40 libraries

    by Will Hadfield

    Tuesday 15 November 2005

Birmingham City Council is converting the PCs used in its 40 libraries to Linux as part of a year-long trial of the open source operating system.

The council - the UK's largest - has commissioned an independent auditor to assess whether the trial demonstrates that using Linux and open source software represents better value than using Microsoft alternatives.

Birmingham is trialling Linux on more than 500 PCs as part of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's E-Innovations project to test open source in the public sector.

The PCs will be equipped with the Gnome presentation layer of the Linux operating system, the Openoffice productivity suite and Mozilla's Firefox browser.

The local authority has kept IBM's Lotus Notes 6.5 on the 500-plus desktops because library staff need to remain within the council-wide e-mail system.

Les Timms, Birmingham City Council's IT manager with responsibility for the open source trial, said, "The next phase of the project is to do a detailed study on the cost base, the long-term viability and how it integrates with our existing structure and security."

The IT department chose Linux using the Gnome presentation layer after inviting both library staff and members of the public to try desktops using different operating systems and presentation layers.

Timms said, "We had Mac, Microsoft Windows and best-of-breed open source configurations, including KDE and Gnome. We had 300 people using the PCs. The one they preferred was Gnome."

The Linux trial will run until the end of March 2006.

  2. the turbo gives speed increase, iv had the below tweaks for nearly a year but think Opera is faster and after some configuration is just as good.

    Turbo

    1. Type about:config into the URL bar & ENTER

    2. In the filter bar, enter turbo

    3. "browser.turbo.enabled" should appear. Double click to enable it.

    4. Restart browser

    1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

    network.http.pipelining

    network.http.proxy.pipelining

    network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

    2. Alter the entries as follows: (by double clicking them)

    Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

    Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once. (I changed mine to 100, works great.)

    3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves

  3. if you look at this image there is a floppy icon i can not delete (as they is no delete option as you can see), i never use the floppy and would like to delete if you know how please share!

  4. I'm also looking for a good tutorial on installing the version of mandriva I downloaded and how to get everything working and some linux(mandriva basics)

    welcome to the board Norsksvaerd

i jumped in the deep end about eleven days ago now and can provide a useful link

    http://shots.osdir.com/

if you ckick on "Mandriva Linux 2005 Limited Edition" in the list to the right hand side you will see all the installation screenshots for that flavour, theres about 70 plus screenshots for you there.

  5. To update on the above post, the schedule now sets 20th (Tuesday) as the estimated release date for 2006.

is the release date (20/09/05) for club members though! with a community release some time after....

  6. hey sampan, i tried earlier this week to install firestarter, it was an RPM file that was dowload from the official site, after double clicking the file it said installed and all that but no GUI sprung up for the confiuration options so i uninstalled it.

i dont doubt what you say isnt true its just shorewall seemed more newbie friendly to configure through the MCC

  7. Firstly, any imput is appreciated....

Last night i installed Shorewall, from one of the three installation discs and then typed "services shorewall start" into a terminal as root, upon doing this the internet conection was immediately stoped by shorewall.

typing the words "services shorewall stop" brings back the internet conection.

all the folders that contains shorewall configuration files are all locked and cant be accessed even when with the security level at standard, the folders have the locked key symbol on them.

i have one computer with a single internrt conection with an ADSL USB modem (wired) that just needs a basic firewall configuration setup, though we all know there isnt anything basic in linux :-)

  8. Well, have had Mandriva LE2005 installed now for almost a week. The only real problem was getting my USB modem (sagem f@st-800) up and running, but that is sorted now.

The machine is a i686 running Mandriva that i downloaded from here http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=29

    the top 3 i586 cd's

    will this cause any problems?

just ran my first update utility from the Mandrake Control Centre, and now have the option to update!

i have installed all the bug fixes, there was maybe a couple of dozen of those but now im need your advise about the Security updates, there is security updates availible but they amount to a massive 600MB- in all

do these all need to be installed?

    imput appreciated
