  1. Nope, the sound is the same exact way in root: nonexistant. Also, the mixers give the same errors and everything in root. [root@localhost ~]# alsamixer alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory [root@localhost ~]# In noob terms (ie plain English), what should I try?
  2. Hey, I have an nForce built-in soundcard. I am on Mandriva LE 2005. My kernel is 2.6.11. I can't hear any sound, and KMix and NVmixer don't work. They both say "cannot open the mixer." I have installed the nForce driver from nvidia's site. [root@localhost rapidroller]# lsmod | grep nv nvsound 1537208 0 soundcore 7104 1 nvsound nvidia-agp 5852 1 agpgart 28264 1 nvidia-agp The user "vern" from #mandriva (the IRC channel) recommended creating a new clean thread with more correct information . Anyway, thanks for any help! EDIT: Forgot to mention, I'm using the driver from here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0301.html
  3. Okay, I still don't have it working. Any help is greatly appreciated. :) From help from the IRC (thank you #mandriva people), I got the nForce driver installed correctly this time, but alsaconf and KMix and sound and all of those still won't work. EDIT: Continuation of this thread - https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=27057

  5. <_< >_> *bump* EDIT: Trying to work this out on IRC...I'll post the results.
  6. Okay, in the "groups" tab, there was only a rapidroller group. When I went to edit my user's settings, there WAS an audio group and I checked the box. After I logged out and in again, and alsamixer still doesn't work right. [root@localhost rapidroller]# alsamixer alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory [root@localhost rapidroller]# I also tried from just being a regular user, and it gave me the same message. EDIT: I added a picture of KMix and how it just doesn't load the mixer or whatever. There's nothing in that dropdown menu. EDIT2: I also added KMix's taskbar icon.
  7. OFF-TOPIC: Heh, I created a partition to be shared between Mangi--driva and Windoze. Yay. :P
  8. I can't get Cedega to play old DOS games, and most other stuff I have (nothing is popular, really) doesn't work with it. They don't work with Wine either, so I still have Windows. Same for Flash.
  9. Yay! This also let me place icons on my Desktop again! :) You deserve a cookie.

  11. No. I tried both sound and MIDI. Nada.
  12. urpmi can't find the sound driver. I still have no clue what to do from here...my sound card is being really screwed up.
  13. I looked at the man for insmod, and it says I need a filename. How exactly am I supposed to use it to fix the sound? PRE-POST: I did a modprobe for snd-pcm-oss, and no error came up. I'm going to try changing my sound and I'll report. EDIT: snd-pcm-oss wasn't found on the list of sound driver thingies. I can't do an urpmi right now because I'm installing like 256 games right now...
  14. 1. [rapidroller@localhost ~]$ su Password: [root@localhost rapidroller]# modprobe intel8x0 FATAL: Module intel8x0 not found. [root@localhost rapidroller]# modprobe snd-pcrm-oss FATAL: Module snd-pcrm-oss not found. [root@localhost rapidroller]# 2. No sound from root either. Also, in Kmix, it says it cannot load the mixers O_o. EDIT FROM WINDOWS: My soundcard is an NVIDIA® nForce Audio thingy .
