  1. And another trick in the bag for whoever reads it! Thanks Ian. Happy new year as well (I stop now after 2 posts, otherwise it will get "stupid") When will I have a post saying <<try to disable one core, disable lan card, usb audio card, use vesa mode, noapic, nolapic, acpi=off, and disable everything else, then install mdv, then upgrade kernel>>
  2. Hi John Happy new year. Thanks for the precisions in your post I was asking the question really with respect to the fact that the installation was so poor with a stock kernel mdv 2007 that I could not see how one could proceed if one did not have a 2d PC at hand to download a newer kernel. (and a USB pen drive, apparently even the cd player did not work initially!)
  3. Thanks for all the details :-)
  4. I assumed memtest86 was ran, BTW this ram test is available from F2 or F3 at the boot of the mandriva dvd (cd as well I imagine)
  5. I listen to bbc using mplayer You just need mplayer with the w32 codecs and you need to save the ram file to find the exact rtsp address In short you can do without realplayer
  6. You will find some clues on how the monitor was id in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
  7. check the video card is well into its slot Do you monitor voltage and T? looks like something is failing Did you try the vesa mode (see if freezes persist)
  8. This echoes some of the themes in thread Ballmer on the Novell deal https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=37110 Is this the start/symptoms of much more to come?
  9. in my own bad words In short alsa and sound are services, I would describe these as piece of software that have a special role: provide a single given functionality Sound enable the sound Sound can use drivers which are OSS (old method) or ALSA-based newer method Init level: ways to run computer with different amount of user privilege, single or multi users, with or without GUI I suggest you google for rute + linux + exposition then linux newbie admin guide Look for mandriva doc Happy google as well. Steep learning curve but well worth it Sound: Did you try to run kmix - go to a console and type kmix & Did you always have the problem in mandy, and for all applications? Going away so please keep going with previous poster
  10. if that the case, for any file system, this is the end, is it not? Heard of recovery that can look at the remanant magnetic field so even if file is overwritten then there is still something there. Do not know if this is a folk story! I suppose the magn field takes more room than is really necessary for 1 bit, so with the right magnetic probe you can do some work looking around where each bit is. Link to reiser look excellent Was going to suggest dd, ddrescue and foremost (in the sense that 1st thing to do is to make a backup)
  11. will have to dig into OOo... I imagine you have not disabled java in the OOo options. No more idea for now. Will you try 2.0.4?
  12. the other thing to be sure is that /etc/fstab use the noattime flag so the pendrive lives longer
  13. Interesting post! Can you just please make something clearer for any newbie looking at this. Was this how you proceeded: Installed 2007 then no network, so how did you setup urpmi with cooker repositories? did you instead download Kernel-linus-2.6.19-3mdv on another box, then burn it to cd, then used rpm -i Kernel-linus-2.6.19-3mdv (you still have new and old kernel in place, so you edited grub menu.lst by hand) Thanks
  14. I have seen threads, but you will need to google I am no fan of aol, and I have never seen any fan of them (must be looking in the wrong forum). Possibly advising you to look for another provider right hand click on desktop then go to monitor/screensaver/desktop whatever it is called, then there is a drop down list with frequency, if you have no choice, then Most likely you are limited by the vesa driver
  15. you do not say which version of OO probably stock then 2.0.3.. 2.0.4 is out and you would need to try it before reporting the artifacts as being a bug (what else can this be?) Can you save the pic as jpeg and view it with smthg else? or is this a mpeg or animated gif? re sound, no idea Have not use MSoffice for yanks now ;)
  16. flac in amarok working out of the box mandriva free 2007, have installed nothing special Which version? I think you posted to wrong forum, not sure
  17. http://anorien.csc.warwick.ac.uk/mirrors/t...7.0mde.i586.rpm alsa-utils-1.0.13-2.mdv2007.0mde.i586.rpm
  18. just ignore it is probably that you do not have the key in the keyring googling shows everybody has the same signature/key http://nodalpoint.madfire.net/articles/200...1-3-beta-update
  19. Thanks for all this. However interested I am in running a local mirror, for now I would handle this mostly by hand. I have tweaked urpmi/drakrpm so that downloaded rpms are not removed from the cache. I can move these rpms around via USB pendrive, or one day via nfs if I get the 2 PCs connected at the same time. What I am really asking is how to reuse hdlist.cz, the file itself, not the whole tree. Any idea?
  20. Well, I am very buyest toward grub. I am probably not the only one ;)
  21. I have 2 PCs. Once I have updated hdlist.cz on the desktop PC, can I copy hdlist.cz from the desktop on the laptop and make urpmi update its database or reread hdlist.cz ? In short, is copying and replacing hdlist.cz enough, or it is more complicated than that? I do not want to make the desktop a full blown local server/repository of rpms+ hdlist for the laptop (I would not know anyway) Thanks
  22. So you use linux, not the market leader? Using the market leader bec it is the market leader is not necessariy the best option I have heard that Chinese had reversed engineered the skype protocol
  23. just to precise by *.rpmnew I meant new config files in /etc to merge / update by hand with the older config files
  24. Oh yes you do! google for rute exposition linux or newbie admin guide among good ressources You are gonna love command line interface CLI!
  25. There is openwango as an alternative http://www.openwengo.org/
