  1. Seems like a good working base but my idea is that the stuff develops organically.... Wiki like so a user might follow a tutorial on say installing a Palm and find that their model isn't supported but work out how to hack their model... (usually adding 1-2 lines to modules.conf or whatever file depending on distro again this is where the links can help... with a table of equaivalents like if you need to edit module.conf in Debian you actually modify XXXX) So in effect they add their note which extends the article, adds a more advanced level (editing on the CLI) etc. I don't think thats a problem because the "archive" is really virtual.... Say the submissions are by month.... or bi monthly then they can be seen by for example a URL to ~/Jan2007/ but the reality is the documents are all just stored and viewing by month is just a use of the filter/order... simply put show all Jan2007 stuff ordered by page I like that, with maybe people (author) or editor putting a flag that says publishable / published. Reader, pdf maker/issuer select date + flag to extract 1 mag I am hinting at stubs not finished, contributor wants to see it, pdf mag, or online noob does not want to see it Do I make sense
  2. Mandriva-centered I suppose, but... What was the original poster intention? An article on gimp is not distro dependent. It is only the noob things about MCC etc which is mandriva Tux was not distro dependent. Was KDE-centered though This is more the key Kde vs gnome vs others Say 80-75% GUI, software reviews & usage of Mandy, total noob 20 % just noob 5% much more advanced = Challenge curiosity A wider audience would be good, no? so in the 75% total noob, I would not have more than 1/4 Mandy specific I like that very much I like the archive concept because it adds lots of value (I know one could say with beagle the previous mags could be accessed, but would total noob use beagle? plus it is resource hungry). Best have an overview so archives can be searched / updated. It is just how you extract 1 episode, 1 mag, 1 issue Tags, yes quite key. Cannot comment on "best" / most practical implementation.
  3. Everybody seems to agree with this. Actually if you reread the thread, nobody *ever* talked about it being CLI-centered. The issue is that Tux had nearly no CLI whatsoever, and an allergy to it even. So "we" wondered how much of it would be suitable. The issue is how much CLI, and what level. I would say about "25% of mag at maximum", 10% min. There is a big chance the links will go into more command lines. Typing konqueror &, or just konqueror, or konqueror `pwd` and learning that bash completion exists is not that difficult. I always felt Tux had a lot of picture that kind of advertised that software applications were nice looking, professional, or sometimes to show where one menu was, or to illustrate a point, but generally speaking I found the pics where quite meaningless (not bringing much) Saying that, it makes an airy mag, pleasing to the eyes, encouraging, and good for advocacy. Hence I suggest the mag keeps the concept of at least near;y one pic per page (part of the concept of "total communication"). To Gowator: Any idea how to extract quick articles from your concept of stub/html kind of book/database to make just one article. So far from what you are proposing it is a bit like having as a backbone a wiki-like/book structure, with possibly different level of depth of knowledge on a given topic. I can only see one solution, forcing the style of writting as modules of increasing complexity, or as a suit of sub topics of total noob levels Example Video | Audio | Wordprocessing | Admin of PC then in video Playing video | Extracting 1 picture from video | recording video | kino&co then in playing video (GUI) Using Xine tutorial | Using kaffeine | using Kplayer | Gmplayer (All same level) in parallel playing video (GUI) advanced Tweaking | troubleshooting | Difference between players but in playing video (GUI) there should be a link to mplayer most simple cli usage to play a dvd (then just a link saying learning further: mencoder) Actually, Tux often said you can do that, but did go in to much details. It was really about opening doors, showing off what was there, and often just even quoting a software name. When you are new to linux, it is not easy to find that there is things like that post it / not taking software (which name I have forgotten again) tomboy?
  4. John, that is the one I read/heard about, anyway the right brand. There was a difference in support between 250 and 350 if I recall well (might have changed by now), and I do not know which of the two model you would need. Other advice based on no experience: avoid usb video device unless really well supported under linux
  5. I am going (brokering) in the same direction as Gowator, that is closing the issue of video by suggesting making them included as some possibility of video material (links) to get punters in, but not as main material at all. Do not want to hear any more about video, clips, and the like. Lets go back to the magazine concept, and what readers would expect, or what readers would start liking, and what readers could do with in terms of information
  6. I know it is nearly a mantra on this board. And I agree (total noob and CLI = too much frustration = barrier = wrong start) How about one or two clips per issue, a longish one (< 5min?) And also 1 or 2 super short (<1 or 2 min?) For ad-hoc purposes, geared at "total noob" Not used wink, is this faster than just making a ppt (impress) presentation, made of captured jpeg, as opposed to some kind of movie/film? I know not the same impact. Hey, am looking forward to the first clip explaining CLI Still, even with such a suggestion, one needs a content / angle / style for the rest of the mag Wink = flash ? flash and linux are not very good friends, are they? (for now) Just wondered is mpeg 2 , divx, etc not ok? Anyhow I have no idea if flash has real advantage. Off topic sorry. From what you are saying wink is good because you can keep the txt, and redo the capture.
  7. >>Well in the opening post Darkelve wrote it was for newbies. Did it change now? No, you have "newbie newbie", and just newbie. IMHO one should define the audience, hence the "type of newbie" and Darkelve wrote >>the total newbie and the more experience "Linux n00b" which is very relevant, spot on. At least 2 groups audience You have self starters, self learners, and people who need more directions/instruction in their learning, you have newbie w/w computing experience One needs to decide at what level to pitch the mag. Tux had made a choice. Fine by me if whoever leads say "pitched at same level as Tux, avoiding any CLI" or whatever. Personally I would keep a bit of CLI >>People barely read in these days. I am against encouraging this trend, Call me old fashioned. Better make a more readable, encouraging reading, with link to videos >>it was about to create a magazine Did it change? Why are we going to have videos in a mag? Multimedia is everywhere ;-) The mag could have links to video indeed >>You can click through the whole tutorial in no time This technology excludes people on slow connection. A video is less searchable than text. Yet it seems to facinate people. How do you cut and paste CLI from video? (I know video will be mostly GUI ;-) A video becomes very geared toward a given distro, even a given desktop manager. Gowator made a similar point So what general use does it have? But yes great for visually showing off, and sometimes better than long explanations. Needed in moderation, and short, this is my point About http://www.virtualsky.net/5minutes I know how taken you are by Ubuntuclips As Gowator said, this clips take huge amount of work. Do not get me wrong they are excellent They are needed for advocacy, distance learning, but cannot replace text instructions, they come in addition. Clips are needed for publicity, to get punters in Clips are needed for people who do not have the vocabulary yet associated with the GUI Clips are needed for complex sequence of clicks or visually difficult things to find or explain in words >>If you have little time and have to solve a specific problem then you should learn how to use a search >>engine Not directed at me, I presume. You mean "one should learn how to [...] Well this was not covered in Tux, and for any newbie, this topic would be useful, and one of the 1st one >>to me you want a help desk Not sure I understand. I want nothing. I am here to help and make suggestions. I can google, I participate in forums. I cannot grasp a mag being a help desk. A teaching desk maybe, yes. >> it's really time to dicide what do you want to create. The whole point of my post. Filling a void and cloning what existed is maybe the solution. Maybe not. Not my decision anyway. Somebody going to clone a dead Dodo? Nop, he/she/they are going to improve on it! Look at Gowator's post: His view of what a mag would contain is actually advanced to some extent, and not at all at the same time (R101 concept), while photoshop in wine? Very user/usability based and adressing fact that some people do not have time to learn gimp. And + one of the old issue of "stoping" people to convert to linux (a barrier to change) Also like me, maybe a desire not to reinvent the wheel or to link to material already existing. Tackling FAQs as well. To Gowator: FAQS one by one, or book extract into mag, provided you have recurring topic is still a mag probably. So in fact I meant I am supportive of the "a bit book oriented approach", reusing faqs, recurring questions. Yes to the structure. Excellent idea to link to past material and give added value to archive material To be clear, I think the mag is a great idea. Sadly, I have little time to contribute for now, and my first plan is to help with some wikis or on forums for now.
  8. Linux is not windows http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm mandriva doc on their website pdf/html FAQs here, and google for linux newbie admin guide rute linux exposition will help your learning curve You can do lots with GUI, but if you have time, command line is great possibly not a problem Latest ATI driver do not support the 9xxx series AFAIK, please check Just use the open source driver (already integrated to distro) urpmi, you must read doc or faq here on board somewhere
  9. Can I disagree? Yes video is great for some newbies, and some styles of learning. BUT, if you have no/little time to read mags/tuto you will have even less time to watch a video (that might be rather long before going to the point) Reading, fast reading ("eye scanning") cannot be replaced Reading for some / many is a good way to memorise the info. Wiki that can be pdf, tutorials, etc are good for people who do not have broadband You need both solutions, addressing what content goes were. One of tux strength was the horizontal layout, made easier reading. I like that I like the idea of structuring rather than reinventing the wheel, I like modularity addressing different level of knowledge Was under the impression Tux was a "proof of concept" to test market and also a way to have free publicity initially to help its launch (fine by me, it benefited the whole community) What for? What purpose? I like Gowator's approach, but this more like a book distributed in episodes, less of "a glossy mag", Tux was full of pictures, adverse to CLI, was more about promoting linux to newbies than really teaching a lot. It was about awareness, what software are out there Plus it had a lot about publishing letters from readers Really, What for? What purpose? which audience?
  10. if just about seeing it you can also use command line less /var/log/Xorg.0.log q to quit pgup/down to move
  11. Does anyone got it to work under mdv 2007? I mean no conflict libstdc++ version 5 and 6? I mean does urpmi libstdc++ version 5 creates any problem against the fact that then version 5 & 6 will coexist on system (I noticed ldd firefox mdv package is compiled against c++6 while firefox.tar.gz is against c++5 library) Thanks
  12. Unreadable black on blue on this link http://linuxsolutions.org/index2.php?optio...mid=3&pop=1 Contact Us: personal opinion: I like finding the real adress when I have a my own mailer available (So I can cc the email to myself) instead of using form Put email in clear with antispam wording Lots of space wasted at top of page in blue, 3cm on my PC even before the blue bend No counter? Is that a choice? Maybe clarify that you do not do or do consultancy? cf contact page Maybe clarify whether you acceot contribs FAQS provided under GPL? other? Nifty otherwise Search engine works! Cool. What does it?
  13. Why do you want to bother installing mandy one when you have mandy 2007 working? You could go with the former comment below and once in text mode, type su to be root then drakx11 to (re)configure the video card
  14. no idea, sorry, looks serious problem due to kernel Try a vanilla newer kernel (or cooker kernel)? 2006 using hotplug 2007 not using hotplug, so difference is huge Maybe google on error -71
  15. run drak3d? You can have 3d with the 9250 open source driver It is a config issue with the 3d desktop or X11 now, not a driver issue
  16. iphitus, that is a great link and benchmark. Thanks. Lame was tested, but it would be great to find maybe - a batch picture conversion (like a mogrify operation) - a video encoding/decoding benchmark 32 vs 64 bits. Just out of curiosity But clearly 32/64 is more about what one wants to learn and try than raw power (Maybe on giant databases 32 vs 64 bits show some difference, bearing in mind that the limiting factor is often the HD anyway)
  17. add single to grub boot line to run in single mode (hint: press e) then once booted in txt mode su then drakx11 choose radeon driver (the open source one not fglrx) I have a 9250 and 3d works fine this way The 9250 is no longer supported by the ATI driver (read the ati release notes)

Glad it helped happy new year ;)
  19. Well, at the minute it is alpha. DO NOT rely on it to be your working system, it is meant to find bugs and testing only
  20. once device inserted post as root the results of fdisk -l cat /etc/fstab mount that will help people to give you some suggestions
  21. in a terminal tail -f /var/log/syslog & for clues when mounting that device
  22. software http://loll.sourceforge.net/linux/links/Au...ideo/index.html but what do you want to achieve? No editing needed? Good card will convert to mpeg2 already Encoding, frontends or just use mencoder (see mplayer) cards? I think choice is very restricted Is it the pvr 250 I have seen around a lot? http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/index.php/cat/120

    DVD Rip

unrar -e nameofilewithoutthedigits I think (-e or -x) It will take care of all the files I assume that way (just try)
  24. Have had lots of problem with automounting of USB devices. Decrease level of security, reboot, and just insert pendrive, icon should come up in kde, and also konqueror system://media Maybe also disable any line in /etc/fstab with /dev/sdx /mnt/somewhere Sometimes it creates confusion. Or otherwise add one, but then do not expect it to show in system://media I cannot figure out at higher level why the icon comes but no mounting occurs.
