  1. what are these suggested speed changes please? I appreciate any details or links. Many thanks.
  2. thats exactly what i meant. Oh, so I better not tick the option everytime then. If that so, can you please show me how to change my root password?
  3. greetings everytime the root login small window pops up, I make sure to click the 'keep password' option, as I'm the only one who has access to my home computer. Yet, it always asks me for the password, times and again. how can i really convince it to keep the password and never ask for it again? thanks in advance :)
  4. greetings when I click a ram file in a webpage, it asks me what to do. is there a software, like real, that i should manually install for ram and ra files to play from webpages? or does mandriva linux LE2005 has a tool for that, and i only need to install it from the distro?
  5. thanks. btw, while installing firefox 1.06, i got this in the terminal window: "(firefox-installer-bin:26503): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed topango_layout_set_text() (firefox-installer-bin:26503): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed topango_layout_set_text() (firefox-installer-bin:26503): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed topango_layout_set_text() (firefox-installer-bin:26503): Pango-WARNING **: Invalid UTF-8 string passed topango_layout_set_text()" is that why I'm having problems with webpage fonts?

    p2p software

what software do you recommend I use for p2p file sharig? In windows, I used Ares lite, and limewire. Does mandriva linuc le2005, which i'm using, comes with any such software?
  7. here is a google search page. I'm not used to that tiny wierd font
  8. how can i make webpages display like it used to be in windows? I was advised elsewhere to import MS fonts, i did that, but nothing changed I went to firefox, preferences, fonts, but MS fonts that i imported are not there!! (they are listed in MCC > fonts already, but not showing in firefox!) I still see tiny weird font in webpages, hardly able to view them... please help me.
  9. I need to upgrade the firefox that came with mandriva installation, version 1.02, to the latest version. how can i do that, in an easy way please? I've downloaded the new version, but failed to install it. what do i do so that I can install software by just clicking on it, like we do in windows? please give me a step by step how-to I'm using mandriva linux LE2005, the default install, exactly as is. many thanks.
  10. I have a DSL connection, and used to download fast while in windows. now in linux, even browing pages in firefox takes ages to show up why is that? my lan card is rightly configured someone advised me to go to about: config and filter to: IPV6 and change to 'true' i did that. pages used to take hours to show up, now it takes minutes.. any chance that it takes seconds? like it does in windows firefox? i notice linux is way much faster than windows, so why it is not so in web connection? any suggestions please?
  11. wonderful, thanks solarian, that was an easy and precise how-to. Thanks AussieJohn, and yes, I'm using KDE. ps. apologies for posting this in the wrong section, mods kindly move it as you see fit.
  12. greetings how can i change the default from having to double click to only single click? [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  13. greetings how do I add MS fonts? and will doing so affect the speed of my computer? I know in ms windows installing more fonts slows down the computer, specially old ones (mine is only amd athlon 700). btw, i need to do so beause I'm viewing the text displayed in a weird way in webpages, hat i used to see perfectly fine from windows. I tried changing the fonts in linux firefox, but nothing happened! still weird, tiny elongated letters. [topics moved from Software & Installing Mandriva and merged by spinynorman]
  14. greetings how can i add new shortcuts to the taskbar? i need a shortcut to a text file that i regularly add to (i use it as my diary, or notes).. btw, do you use any good software in linux for your notes, or diary, to save your thoughts, snippets of text you copy from the web, yoru own text notes , login info, links and the like? [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  15. I did exactly whay you say here. But there is no option for that, perhaps because I'm a user not logged in as root? how do i switch to login as root?
  16. Thanks so much. Ok, I'll re-install it again, thanks to your kind encouragement. btw, i need to change the default boot to windows instead of linux. I failed to do so. I went o MCC and clicked 'change the way your computer boots' but there is no option for changing the default boot OS. In a previous install, it used to be there. Do I have to login as admin or something for that option to show up? if so, how do I switch login from user to admin?
  17. thanks so much for your very helpful replies.. though i was too despirate, and before you posted all this, i just deleted linux, i mean i deleted the 2 partitions and reformatted into fat32. the funny thing is that the linux OS boot selection still shows up everytime i restart my computer! any idea how come its still there? anyhow, after your encouragement, i think I'll re-install it again. but just so you know, whenever i click at 'help' i get a mesage that help is not installed. so why help files are not installed by default? why do i have to study how to install them, they should have presumed that dumb people like me need things to be pre-installed for them during default system install, not by them manually, which itself needs studying!!. I'm amazed and frustrated that linux excepcts me to be a computer engineer to handle anything there!!! why dont they take into consideration casual home users? if they ever do so, linux would overpower windows in no time for example, why can't i just click an icon to install something i just downloaded? i think that the more powerful any system is, the more simple its tasks should get. the better an OS is, the more transparant it must be. In linux, you spend some part of your life to study the operating system, while in windows you spend that time to study the software that you need to work with, not the OS itself. When you buy a car, you expect it to serve you, and to save you time, not the otherwise. from what I gathered, linux does not expect you to download software and install it yourself, but rather: install software from the library that comes with the install CDs. Great, talking about freedom. Even mr gates allows you to insytall whatever you want. even when you want to upgrade, linux will decide for you what and when to upgrade!!! is that what it really is? is linux some kind of a big prison, or what? Sorry for that lengthy bla bla, I'm sure you all don't agree. anyhow I'm willing to re-install it, if someone taught me: how to install software in mandriva linux. I want to click, not to type please. If there is a way to install something simple, like flash player (linux) for firefox, by clicking, please teach me how. If there is no easy way, I will probably not install linux again.
  18. newbie here I'm truly amazed at the lack of a simple help file in linux for first time users. The simplest of things seems like mysteries when you start as a newbie in linux I'm using mandriva linux LE2005, I have a few questions please: - where is 'My Computer' or anything similar, where I can browse to my files and fiolders? - what is that wierd font that I'm vewing pages with, in firefox for linux? its a tiny and squeezed and elongated font. How can I change that to be like the fonts I'm used to when i run windows firefox? - how do I add a shortcut to the taskbar, to open a text file located in a windows partition? - what is the equivalent to 'My Documents' in mandriva linux? many thanks in advance.
  19. thanks aioshin and scarecrow for your help. I'll try what you said. Hopefully i can figure out what you mean aioshin : where do i type what you mentioned? sorry i'm completely new to linux. ok, if i'm insane, what do you call mandriva linux, which allowed me to skip the create user step, without any warnings? I'm not to be blamed , am a complete newbie.. it made me assume that its ok to proceed without creating one. It should stop there and force people to create one. Loads of newbies install linux for the first time and they must be taken into consideration.
  20. Greetings I just installed mandriva linux LE2005 dowload. During installation i didn't choose an admin password, and i didn't create a user either. It accepted that. I was glad, because I didn't want to type such info everytime I start linux. But now, everytime i start linux, it asks me, in a box titled 'welcome to localhost', to type a username and a password..!!! I'm trapped here...what do I do? how can i know that info if i didnt give it during installation? many thanks in advance..
  21. greetings I'm using mandriva le2005 and windows xp how can i change the default booting operating system, from linux to windows? currently, If i dont do anything, the computer boots in linux. I want to change that so that it boots in windows instead, without having to be there to manually choose windows. how please? also, where is 'help' while in linux? in windows, help and search are always there in the start button menu. Where are those, in linux please?
  22. thanks so much, I'll do that now and see.. forgive me, as a complete newbie to linux, but how can I add that line? where do i go to find that conf file?
  23. Thanks for the tips. I found an 'install' file inside CD1, that has instructions for installing from hard disk, without having to burn any CDs. It worked great, though figuring out partition numbers was tricky. The problem now is internet connection. I have a d-link 530 LAN adapter card, but ML configures it as a via something, and when I start firefox, it takes ages to reach even google! what should I do?
  24. Greetings! newbie here! I'm currently downloading the 3 CD's of Mandriva LE2005 installation. The problem is that my cd writer is broken, so I was wondering: is there any way to install the 3 CDs downloads, without having to burn them in actual CDs? like using a virtual CD software or something? (I have Alcohol 120%) Or must I go buy a new cd writer?
