  1. You need to install the *-devel-* rpm that is matching your kernel. :)
  2. How are you trying to launch KDE. You say you you can launch Firefox and things which leads me to believe that you login at a command prompt. If this is so when you have logged in type 'startx' and see what you get. Let's know what happens. If I am wrong please state how you are logging in.
  3. I made one from a piece plywood and 2X4 with a piece of pipe lagging. Don't know the cost as it was all from off-cuts.
  4. Thank you Jeanette & welcome to the board. I made the effort and compiled from sources and it works. Hopefully for longer than the other fixes. Be warned anybody who wishes to compile you will need a few deps installing, but it's worth it.
  5. The server is now 'cn.scs.msg.yahoo.com' for now anyways.
  6. That's where good forum members come in. They share little tit bits they have found out. Thanks again. Oh! and welcome to the forum.
  7. Thanks for that. Have they altered that recently then? 'cause mine stopped working as well.
  8. I see the case of both your set-ups, Ian and Scarecrow, which are both quite reasonable. The problem that I was having was that unless I edited the hosts file I had to remember each machines ip address. Now I only have a few to worry about but as I'm not so young anymore  I had trouble remembering which address went with which machine. I have to jot down which address I have assigned to which machine so that I enter the correct information in the hosts file I am working on. Some of the machines are in different rooms of the house. If I just allocate the addresses to MAC's on the router I still cannot access the various machines by name, so it has to be static addresses and hosts files. Thank goodness I not looking after 20 or 30 machines on a network.
  9. Thank you Ian, I hope you had a good time. Don't put yourself out unless you feel like having a bit of fun. The DHCP works just fine, however the names just do not get resolved from the Linux machines. I have been trying for about 3 days now and just gave up and assigned them static addresses and edited the hosts file on each machine. What was throwing me was not being able to remember if Windows XP had a similar file, and it does.
  10. Thank you Scarecrow the answer I was looking for was how to define the hosts on the Windows machine. I had totally forgotten how. I wasn't bothered about the naming just the fact that I needed the resolution of the ip address to make life a bit easier.
  11. I am having problems with the above router and the main problem is on the web interface page 'Attached Devices' my linux network computers are all listed as UNKNOWN for device name, excpet for one. They all are assigned ip addresses and I can access each one by that ip address. I also have a (cough) Windows machine connected and was a breeze to set up and is displayed correctly. Now, I can ping the one Linux machine that is listed by name from the Windows machine and I have access to a couple of folders that are shared via samba on the Windows machine. The problem is I cannot do the opposite from the Linux machine(s). I could use static ip addresses on each machine and forget about name resolution, however it's a pain if I add or remove a machine from the system, and I can't for the life of me list the other machines on the Windows one like we do with Linux (/etc/hosts). I hope I am making sense here. Ian: I saw in one of the many posts that I have trawled through the you used exactly the same router as I have, maybe you could help with this one please? or anyone else that knows what I'm talking about. Thank You.
  12. There is also the Gnome grdesk. Very similar to the kde version.
  13. The sure way to test your battery is to replace it with a new one. They cost very little. Of course when you do replace the battery you will need to set up the cmos as it will set to the manufacturers default.
  14. A nice add-on is 'noscript' It takes a while to sort out what to allow and what not to allow, but sure speeds up page loading. It stops google-analytics and things like that. At first you will find that a lot of sites will complain that flash is not loaded and stuff but you just allow the stuff you want with a couple of clicks. It works in Firefox but I don't know about Seamonkey.
  15. Well I installed from the full dvd version. Don't know if that would make a difference.
  16. CTRL+F whatever screen you want to access. In kde anyways.
  17. Is cups installed properly and running I wonder?
  18. Does your graphics card use shared memory? I know you state 1gig of ram but if you have a few apps running graphics it may slow you down a bit. Also is all of your ram being recognised? This problem does point to a ram problem.
  19. I do understand about the toolbar as I often arrange that as soon as I install from scratch, however I have never backed up the contents before as I don't have as many as you do. I have just now tried what I believe is what you are looking for and used the backup/restore menu item from within Organise Bookmarks. Before restoring I really screwed up the toolbar bookmarks. It restored just as I had it beforehand. The backed-up file had a 'json' extender. I also backed up using the HTML export/import with the same result. Are you using the Firefox from the repos? This may be different to the one I am using from the Mozilla website. Other than that I have no further ideas.
  20. Well John, I am using the latest firefox version 3.0.10 and if I open organise bookmarks there is a menu item for importing/exporting bookmarks. It does say HTML. Now whether this is different or not I don't know as I don't have an earlier version of firefox. I don't see why things should be different in Australia :D Sorry I can't offer a solution for you, but rather than not reply at all I offer what I have experienced.
  21. Neddie, you could always make it a read only file. The only time it needs to be writable is for configuration. I think.
  22. Could it be that the default setting for the wizard(s) is unselected John? I have just installed SpamAssasin and run the wizard. As you say the check boxes are unchecked even after checking them. However I checked .kde4/share/config/kmailrc and my selection was saved in the file. You could check your preferences are in that file. Why ALL your messages are being sent to the wastebin I don't know as mine never has. I haven't installed anitvirus to try that as I have never felt the need to. I may be tempting fate.
  23. My personal preference is to always do a clean install. I have never done a fully successful upgrade, not to say it can't be done, it's just that I have tailored the system to my requirements and an upgrade doesn't seem to work for me. Also with a clean install it gives one a chance to get rid of all the garbage that has been collected. ;)
