  1. Step by step I did as follows. Download from Mysql website the drivers for windows Mysql ODBC 3.51 Install this on the windows machine. Go to control panel -> Administrative Tools -> Data Sources. Add a user data source pointing to my mysql server. Note replace 'my' to wherever 'your' server resides. That's it. Of course you will need a data source or DSN as it is known for each database connection that you need to use. It is that simple. Once you have done it you will be able to repeat with ease. I trust you can follow the directions, I am more of a doer than explainer of how I did it. B)
  2. Welcome to MUB. Whatever you do don't install the 64bit version on the 32bit comp. ;) Sorry but I couldn't resist putting that one in.
  3. Different strokes for different folks. Another reason I like Linux CHOICE. My preference is the KDE desktop, which uses a lot of gnome apps anyway. Of course a gnome environment can still use some kde apps. Good isn't it. :D
  4. Solved with a lot of heartache, brain bashing and our friend google. The thing to do was download a driver from mysql website, create a new connection, dns in windows and make the connection. Easy peasy when you know how. Maybe this will be of help to someone struggling with this.
  5. I don't know if this can be done but here goes. I have a mysql database on one of my linux boxes which I want to connect to from a windows box, not a window box ;) , a computer running windows. Is there any way of doing this? Perhaps html as I already have a webserver running on this linux box. Not sure where to start so any suggestions welcome. I wold prefer to do a straight connection rather than html if possible. TIA
  6. Yes I read the article and was surprised where it was suggested the most common user name was 'root', how did they come by that I wonder? :o
  7. Well I'm getting on a bit, not real old though. I missed the date of the original post.
  8. Don't worry about the error message as long as the camera works, it should do. I've had the very same message in all the releases of Mandrake & Mandriva I have installed using a webcam3 and webcam pro. Both cameras function although the error message is in dmesg and syslog. I ain't gonna dump a good piece of kit if it still works :P
  9. Well I've been using the box for a while now and find it quite good. Easy to set up, for what setting up there is, and quite stable. The firewall seems to work as does the talk business. The range is not bad either as I have the box itself in a small bedroom at the front of my house and am running a 'puter on wireless in the kitchen at the back of the house with god knows what in the way and it works fine. Set the wep to run on 128 bit instead of the 64 bit. I know wep is easily cracked but I don't think my neighbour is interested in what I'm doing. All in all not a bad piece of kit especially when it was free.
  10. The way I see this is if you have disabled hda in bios then I can understand access denied as the drive is physically there OS wise it is not. Question is are you set up to boot from hda or your new drive (I assume to be hdb). One can access root from within kde, if you can get that far, as there are functions for partition manipulations in kde. Without manipulating other startup scripts you cannot log into the system with root privileges. I would say Mandriva is no more difficult than any other system when it gets somewhat screwed up. Personally I would be looking at the bootup scripts and either comment out or delete any reference to hda, if that's possible, and your bootup sequence is in fact using your sda drive.
  11. And I thought I was starting something new Sadly the original sound card has died in Linux as well Not had time to play about with it yet so just stuck another card in for the time being. Still it did work with Linux and not with Windows
  12. Well I think that is a brilliant idea to get Linux noticed and out to the world, the only question being how does an ordinary everyday user get to the pages. I just tried a google and not a mention. Perhaps it's early days.
  13. During your installation did you elect to use the entire drive for installation, or use existing partitiions? If it was the latter then you would have had the choice of formatting the whole drive or just selected partitoins. In which case you would need to select them as they are not selected as default, just the OS partition. As you were installing a 64-bit version the afore said might be utter jibberish as I have not installed 64-bit myself.
  14. Nice clean layout in the diagram. I'm keeping a close eye on your progress as I am expecting one of those boxes this week. Not sure what to expect yet. I can see this thread running a while yet. Good stuff.
  15. I can't answer all your problems Keith but for mplayer you need the win32-codecs installed. I have looked through the whole thread and not seen any reference to that. So try installing the codec and I think you will find mplayer will be OK. I use it quite often to whatch NASA tv so I know it works. Good luck.
  16. Hello there, have a look in the advance section of your fonts dialog and see if you have a check in 'Allow pages to select there own fonts......' If you have then quite a lot of pages will use windows fonts. This means changing your font size won't make any difference. You have a couple of choices here, you can either uncheck the box and use only your choices, or, install windows fonts. If you install windows fonts then most, not all, pages will render correctlly, if you uncheck the box and play around until you get what you desire some pages with tables for headers will have the text overlapping input fields and such. I use firefox in the first mode as it gives the most consistent results. This is my findings, hope it's of help. Of course I will be corrected if I am wrong. ;)
  17. Well whatever works has to be just great. AFAIK I downloaded from flashes own website and installed driectly into the afore mentioned folder. Sorry I was a bit short sighted about other users as I live on my own, am retired so no-one else uses the 'puter . Thinking about my arrangement though you could have different users with own ~/home and their own plugins. Also whenever I install a new release the old plugins/settings are retained as I don't format the ~/home partition. That's just my way. But as I said whatever works for you that's just great. Linux is marvellous isn't it.
  18. Not wanting to put the cat amongst the pigeons, I have in my /home folder a .mozilla folder inside of which is a plugins folder and all the plugins are in there. So any updates find the plugins without a problem. Seems like there is more than one way to skin a cat so to speak.
  19. Hi Neddie, I've been using Ekiga for a while now, and kinda like it. Easy to set up, it rings on the sound card speakers but uses a voip phone for the conversation. I can create accounts on other networks, call landline numbers, all I need really. What matters is what OS your recipient is on. If it's linux then no problem ekiga can deal with it, if it's windows the I recommend fwd.pulver.com to them and I have an account with pulver and I can call them, they can call me. Video is a bit shaky on this machine. I think the spring is getting weak, you know the one I wind it up with ;) Must update it sometime. Hope you get sorted.
  20. I've been windows free for quite some time now but needed to install windows for photo printing, linux doesn't do that too well, anyway my sound card ( A7V8X-X) works perfectly with linux but can I get it to work with windows. Not a chance even with the correct drivers it refuses to utter a peep. Normal colour printing is fine in linux it's just when it comes to photo printing the colours a pretty horrible really. My printer is a HP2600n laser. I have read a number of texts on this and they all say the same thing. Yes I have tried various correction filters and stuff but no great joy. I'm not asking for help, just a bit smug that linux has one up on windows.
  21. Sorry if I seemed to give you duff information, I didn't realize you had other plugins or I would have mentioned the mozplugger and totem plugin. I found totem wouldn't play .wmv for me it just put a nice word or two up and locked up as you say. I've never had mozplugger in there so I haven't needed it. I have re-installed FF a number of times and each time copied the two files into .mozilla/plugins and it worked without a hitch. Good Luck.
  22. An interesting read but to me it's a fine example of how to talk a lot without saying anything. Sorry but towards the end a lot of it went straight over the top of my head. Must be my age or something. :P
  23. You need those two files in your .mozilla/plugins folder in your home folder. Note the folder is hidden. Happy New Year.
  24. Totem has it's own plugin and does not handle wmv. I installed this with another package and didn't know, just remove the totem plugin and check you still have the mplayer plugin installed.
  25. I'd like to turn that on it's head so that the problem with Skype is that it is not compatible with anything but Skype. Market leader I will agree, they started the whole thing off. I think. I might be mistaken though so I'll shut up at that. ;)
