  1. This may sound a bit scary, but I will take a look at my linux manual and see if I can figure out how to do this. I did note that the error message was "error 21: disk does not exist". Will get back with the bootloader script when I figure out how to do it.... Thanks - Roger
  2. Hello, Just working through some 2008.1 install issues. I just booted up and the keyboard didn't work (mouse ok, but typing and nothing happens). Reboot and the keyboard is now working again. This is the second time the keyboard didn't work and a reboot solved it. 2 failures in about 11 sessions. This is an old keyboard with the circular plug, as opposed to a usb keyboard. Any insight or known problems (with solutions) appreciated. Thanks -- Roger
  3. Hello, I am having the same problem - just installed 2008.1. I was running Windows XP on a 10gb drive, which I turned into a slave drive with Linux as master. I can see the slave, with windows bits, with the media viewer under 2008.1. The boot loader also indicated an XP option, but when I tried to boot windows, I was told that the drive wasn't available (don't remember the precise language). If anyone has a suggestion as to how to make the Windows drive operable, I would appreciate it. I am also not a Linux guru (so limited/no console activity would be appropriate for me) Regards -- Roger
  4. Thanks for the pointer - auto-login enabled and things are much more pleasant!!! Thank again -- Roger
  5. Hello, Just installed 2008.1 and it is running really good - prior I had 2006. It appears that I have to do a session login ever time I start up 2008.1, and as a single user that is a pain (which was not required in 2006). Is there a setting where I can automatically enter the desktop where I left off, without logging the sole user (me) in?? Also, when I tried logging into the session, I clicked on my name (only user again) and it filled in the 'user' box, but then the keyboard and mouse no longer worked, and I had to terminate the session before it started. Next time I tried just typing in my name and password, and that seemed to work fine. Not sure if this is a known problem?? If I can can just drop into my old session, this obviously ceases to become a problem for me... Thanks and regards -- Roger
  6. Do you know if most systems support multiple USB cards?? I'll get a 4 port, but given that things have gone USB I would also like to retain my current 2 port card (unless it will cause system confusion....), and I think I have at least 1 free slot now. Thanks -- Roger
  7. Never Mind!! Cleared a USB temporarily, and booted up the Logitech fine. Now I just need some more USB capacity.... Regards -- Roger
  8. Hello, This will hopefully be an easy one.... My old mouse is dying, and I would like to replace it on my Mandriva 2006 without a lot of fuss. I am really hoping not to substantially alter my system for want of a mouse!! The dying mouse is a 2 button with scroll wheel 'Microsoft' mouse plugging into the PS2 port. I couldn't find any info on the Mandriva 2006 hardware compatibility on mice, so I found a positive linux review (5 star) on the Logitech Optical mouse. I got a Logitech Optical mouse (not cordless) with a USB to PS2 adapter, put it in, rebooted, and of course nothing. My hardware mouse setting reads something like 'any USB or PS2 mouse', and I can change that to a specific PS2 selection if that would resolve things. Of course my system has only 2 USB ports, both of which are in use. Any help that anyone can provide would be appreciated. Alternate mouse that is plug and play compatible with 2006 (and PS2 compatible)?? Any other approach that would avoid me adding hardware, etc. would be prefered. If more USB is essential, would the mouse work even then? Returning the mouse and getting another would be no issue. Thanks -- Roger
  9. Hello, I deleted ClamAV and the auto download problem seems to have been fixed. As a note, I did look at a Mandriva 2006 update for ClamAV, in which they alter the distribution standard DEFAULT update period (for 'my' virus database) from EVERY HOUR to once a day - in order to decrease the expected update load on their update system. I guess since I was running Mandriva I was automatically updating my ClamAV database every hour (even though I was not using it). Maybe a bigger pipeline to the internet would have made it un-noticable, but too bad anything on Mandriva has a pre-set update cycle...... Much thanks and regards -- Roger
  10. Hi, I actually don't know anything about 'cpan.org'. I put in the address below the ebay one that says 'established' (128.121.60.235) and it seems to come up as 'ClamAV', which I gather is a linux antivirus program. When I tried to open it up, it indicated that the auto-update feature was off, but then the whole ClamAV program locked up. I have not put any of the updates on ClamAV, and I wonder if it is busted and updating itself. Can I just delete ClamAV, or does it play some useful function on my system? I guess my options are update or delete?? Thanks -- Roger
  11. Hello, Here is the netstat -tuan. Hopefully it provides a clue as to what is going on. Browers were closed when I ran netstat - seems that the ebay autos page I was looking at prior to the auto download was still active?? 12. Hello, I did copy some of the information out of netstat - if someone can tell me how to do a screenshot in console then I can get the whole content here. Browsers and all windows were closed when I ran netstat. Some of the streams had no path data (which is why they are blank below....) this is the info with type=stream. No 'flags' were checked.... Inode Path 54522 /tmp/.ice-unix/dcop3851-1165503244 54521 54516 /tmp/.ice-unix/3878 54515 ?? /tmp/.x11-unix/xo 54520 27264 /tmp/ice-unix/dcop3851-1165503244 this repeats a bit, and then some others 14354 /home/roger/tmp/ksocket-roger/klauncherc81wa.slave-socket 10413 /tmp/mcop-roger/localhost-of21-45782b16 10354 @/tmp/fam-roger- 9631 /var/run/dbus/system-dbus_socket 9624 /home/roger/tmp/orbit-roger/linc-ef4-0-10fdf5678d0a1 8752 /tmp/.x11-unix/xo Hope this allows someone here to get some idea of what is going on with my system and what I can do to put an end to it. Please let me know if more info is required and what it would be. Thanks -- Roger
  13. Ok, well it happened again (no surprise). I closed the browser and the 'download' was still happening. I opened console, logged into su, and typed in 'netstat'. No log came up, but just a message something like 'foreign user'. I tried 'run netstat' but no result. Can anyone clarify what I need to do differently to get a useful log, or what action I need to take. At this time, I am thinking I need to save personal files on dvd and reload 2006. I am concerned, though, that I will end up in the same situation in the near future. Any suggestions appreciated. I am concerned that I have a virus or some such infliction. Regards -- Roger
  14. Yikes, this sounds like it might be something unpleasant...... now I would have been happy with updates : ) Can I just write down the result of netstat, or do I need to do a screenshot?? If so, can you provide info on how to do that in console (and where will it go such that I can retrieve it....). Yep, can barely turn on the system.... Thanks -- Roger PS - given recent behavior, it won't be long before I have an opportunity to run netstat
  15. Hi, Running KDE and on one side of the clock there is a 'hide panel' and on the other is the Korganizer alarm demon, screen resize, a questionmark in an orange circle that says that 'service is not configured', network up/down icon and the volume. Not sure where the update applet by the clock is?? What should I be looking for? Thanks and regards -- Roger
  16. Hello, Can someone please provide a list of actions I need to take to disable all auto updates on my Mandriva 2006?? I still am on modem, and part through a session some download starts which completely disables my session. The packet profile looks like a typical download, with most everything coming in - if it were going out, I would be a lot more worried. I only have the disks on my media manager, and those have the update boxes unclicked. Not sure what actions I need to take to disable the updates, but this is a real problem for me. Any recommendations appreciated Regards -- Roger
  17. Well, looks like I replied a bit too soon. I though that I had created a shortcut via skype, but that didn't work. The toolbar seems to only want to allow me to add shortcuts of apps that are shown on star menu, but skype doesn't seem to be on star menu. I realize that this is probably pretty basic, but how specifically do I get skype added?? Since I can't see it as user, I assume that I need to log in as root to gain access to it at this point. Regards -- Roger
  18. Thanks for all of the help!! I have it running now, and just need to confirm that I've a shortcut. Regards -- Roger
  19. Hello, Running 2006 (just), and a newbie. Downloaded skype 1.3.0.53-1mdk.i586 from the Skype site to the desktop then installed it. Rebooted after a seemingly successful install, and couldn't find the application in the 'star' menu anywhere. Just to see, I checked the deinstall menu under 'skype' search, and it does think that I have skype there to deinstall. Where can I look for the installed application - I figure it is out there on my system somewhere??? Thanks -- Roger PS - if there are other apps not normally included in 2006 that I would need for skype, how would I find out (assuming that I ultimately find skype, of course)??
  20. Thanks for the background - sounds like it is just as well that I removed it.... Regards -- Roger
  21. Hello, Just upgraded from 10.0 to 2006 Free 3 days ago. Just started to get a frequent KDE fault, which seems to be related to Kat. Deleted Kat and fault seems to have stopped. Is Kat still an issue with 2006?? If so, hard to understand why it is still part of the default install. The overall Mandriva 2006 install is excellent and simple (even for a non-techie like me). Regards -- Roger
  22. Hello, Thanks for the suggestions. Fixing the font size has resolved most of the small font issues. Probably just need to keep poking at it a bit..... it's only been in for less than a day. Thanks very much, and I am sure I will be back for more assistance as other things crop up. Regards -- Roger
  23. Hello, I assume that you are talking about the Mozilla Firefox menu. I can certainly get to edit - preferences, but there is no 'content'. Under 'general' there is a 'fonts and colors' menu, but no advanced setting option I can find. I tried setting the font size there, but it does not seem to help on the web page content itself. Can you please clarify?? It may be that the firefox has a more limited menu than standard Mozilla?? Probably my issue with not being clear about the Firefox. Thanks -- Roger
  24. Hi, Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I am using that, but it seems kind of silly to have to do that every time I open a page. I was hoping that there was a preferences setting that would keep it at the 'magnification' level that works for me. Thanks -- Roger
