  1. Great call - the old format worked as I remembered. I did go into the control panel to load the URPMI info, and it ended up doing all of that automatically for me (automation.....). Is the 'update' column indicate an automated, periodic scan of newly available updates?? I am on a modem, and unchecked those boxes as a precaution - terrible when the system goes on holiday for half an hour automatically updating things. Thanks -- Roger
  2. Well, went to easyURPMI (which I have used before) but when I try to open either the official or plf buttons in another page (per instructions) it won't let me. Clicking on the button activates a pdf download, which is not appropriate if I remember right (need to select mirror location, etc). Am I missing something?? Thanks -- Roger
  3. Thanks - just installed 2008.1 (3 CD) a couple of weeks ago, and have not set up the URPMI yet (guess that is next.....) Tried the 'add SW', but K3b is not found in the search of available SW, so I can only conclude it is not there....
  4. Thanks, but K3b does not seem to be in my release (why I thought maybe it was superseded). I'll look for a download......
  5. Hello, Looking for a CD burner on my Mandriva 2008.1 for KDE. Tried a forum search, but 'CD' is too short and I got a fault..... Will primarily use for data storage. GUI with drag and drop would be great, but not sure if something like that exists.... Thanks -- Roger
  6. I was wondering if there is a difference between the hd0 / hd1 and hda / hdb designation?? The disk listing I pasted above uses the hda/hdb designations, while the grub commands use hd0 and hd1. Not sure if that makes any difference?? Any other resources I can poke at to try and get this resolved?? I have started to look at the on-line grub documentation, but I think it may be beyond me at the moment.. Regards -- Roger
  7. Hello, Now I get an 'Error 21 : selected disk does not exist' What should I change now?? This seems to be a bit of an elusive guy!! Thanks for your persistence.... Regards -- Roger
  8. Hello, Made that change, and now on boot I get 'Error 13 : invalid or unsupported executable format' This is the relevant chunk of script in menu.lst title windows map (hd0) (hd1) map (hd1) (hd0) rootnoverify (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 Regards -- Roger
  9. Here is the listing.... My preference would be to keep my windows drive as is, since when my linux disk crashed last month I did have access to a backup (yup, probably would be ok even if grub was on the front end.....). Thanks for the persistent help!! Regards -- Roger
  10. Evidently not, when I enter the command I get 'FATAL ERROR cannot open disk drive' What next?? I do have the drive jumpered as a slave - there may be a cable select option (have to do a web search), and would this be the issue?? I am able to see the slave disk via the 'storage media' icon on the desktop, and all of the various windows bits on the drive. Thanks -- Roger
  11. Hello - Any further suggestions on how to get my dual boot running???? I have some windows apps that I need to have access to................ Regards -- Roger
  12. Thanks for all of the help and info - now just need to do a bunch of downloads....... Regards -- Roger
  13. Hello, Downloaded the RPM file, and it is only 7kB. It indicated something on the order of it not being a complete build when I started to install it - so I did not install. In reading the info from RPMpbone.net it implied that the RPM install will initiate a download of the actual contents required via my on-line connection..... Is this accurate?? Also, I am on a dial-up modem, so about how big is this download - an all-night affair?? Thanks -- Roger
  14. Hello, Just installed 2008.1 free and working with Openoffice writer. I noticed that I was getting automatic text reformating of an existing document during editing because my font (Helvetica in this case) is apparently not available (and not available in the font selection menu). The help indicates that this may be an issue with the printer not being able to print in this font. The printer exists from my 2006 Mandriva install and printed Helvetica no problem. What can I do to get the fonts??? Is there an option in Openoffice that I missed, do I need to add fonts to the 2008.1 printer driver, what???? My guess is that this is a simple one, and many out there are successfully using Helvetica on openoffice....... Thanks for the assistance. Regards -- Roger [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  15. Hello, Tried the first change to 'rootnoverify' and got the same 'error 21' when I tried to boot windows. Added the second change for 0x81 to hd0 and 0x80 to hd1, and still get the same 'error 21' when I try to boot windows. Not sure how I check that the windows partition is flagged as bootable?? I can change the jumpers on the drives and boot on the windows (with that drive as primary) no problem. Not sure how to check how the sw views the drive. Looked at gparted info and got the impression they would not recommend it in my inexperienced hands..... Thanks for the editing info - makes it easy!! Regards -- Roger
  16. Ok, Tried to get started editing the file, but ran into some really simple problems...... 1) What file am I supposed to be editing?? I looked at the file I was pointed to for a list of the Grub contents (menu.1st) but that is a 'plain text document', and I am not sure that is it. 2) I tried to give my current session user root privileges via assigning 'root' group membership for the user - obviously not functional, since I had to sign into root to look at the system config. What is the simplest way to edit this file / assign root privileges ?? It would be great to use the editor in Konqueror, or some other simple editor. I have used the console before, but would have to get out my book for line item commands, and that is more dangerous for me. I noticed that there is a 'boot' logo in the control center - is this another access point to alter the loader files?? Thanks for your help - I know that this is very basic...... Regards -- Roger
  17. Hi, Looking to edit the bootloader tomorrow. Just wanted to make sure that these changes will not affect my ability to boot linux (in case I have to get back in and change things again)??? Looks like it will only affect where the loader looks for windows, but I would hate to get locked out the system (unable to boot linux either), and I am no linux expert so moving from there would be complex for me.... Thanks -- Roger
  18. Hello, The error message was Error 21: selected disk does not exist Thanks -- Roger
  19. Sadly, lots of views but not help..... I am stuck with Windows to use my car service CD/DVDs. Need to get windows up - please help.... Probably simple for those in the know. Regards -- Roger
  20. Hello, Just installed 2008.1. I was running Windows XP on a 10gb drive, which I turned into a slave drive with Linux as master. I can see the slave, with windows bits, with the media viewer under 2008.1. The boot loader also indicated an XP option, but when I tried to boot windows, I was told that the drive wasn't available (don't remember the precise language). If anyone has a suggestion as to how to make the Windows drive operable, I would appreciate it. I am also not a Linux guru (so limited/no console activity would be appropriate for me) timeout 10 color black/cyan yellow/cyan gfxmenu (hd0,0)/boot/gfxmenu default 0 title linux kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=UUID=0a9a856c-f1bc-4b00-b5c3-0b8860bf6f13 resume=/dev/hda5 splash=silent vga=788 initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd.img title linux-nonfb kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux-nonfb root=UUID=0a9a856c-f1bc-4b00-b5c3-0b8860bf6f13 resume=/dev/hda5 initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd.img title failsafe kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=failsafe root=UUID=0a9a856c-f1bc-4b00-b5c3-0b8860bf6f13 failsafe initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd.img title windows root (hd1,0) map (0x81) (0x80) map (0x80) (0x81) makeactive chainloader +1 Regards -- Roger
  21. Resolved. Shifted the printer and mouse USB connectors from the 'mother board' USB ports to ports in a 5 port USB board. The keyboard works consistently now.
  22. Thanks - guess I'll go ahead and get one and hope that it resolves my intermittent keyboard problem. Regards -- Roger
  23. Hello - Searched the HW database for Mandriva, and could not determine if the Logitech Wave (hardwired usb) worked well with linux. I have just installed 2008.1, and am having trouble with my current old style keyboard - circular connector type (often keys don't work, and have to reboot). Wife like the wave (good thing) and I want to make sure that it will work prior to getting one. Did a search on this forum and didn't find much, which may be a positive commentary..... Input appreciated. Regards -- Roger
  24. Hello, Had to reboot 4 times to get the keyboard operational, so any assistance to resolve this would be very much appreciated. It is a Keytronic keyboard - in the hardware scan it comes up as 'AT translated set 2 keyboard Power button (FF) Power button (CM). The option setting for the keyboard is 'Generic US'. Any suggestions on how to resolve this ??? Thanks -- Roger
