  1. Got it running, but the monitor was incorrectly detected and took a bit to make operational. Funny that it worked fine during the install.... Still working through some issues, but that is to be expected.... Thanks -- Roger
  2. Thanks - loaded K3B onto my system and will download the DVD iso. Hope it works well..............
  3. Hello, Looking to download 2010.2 (as an upgrade to my current 2008.1). I did purchase a DVD for 2010.2, but was 'missing files', which is a bug or mirror problem which I read has been resolved (but doesn't help my DVD much). In any case, is creating my own DVD as easy as downloading to desktop, burning a DVD, and proceeding with the install?? Is there a DVD burner recommended (hopefully included in my 2008 free)? Finally, is it likely that an 'upgrade' from my 2008 using the 2010.2 DVD would work? I realize some files may be missing (downlevel versions from 2008 used instead?). I assume that those downlevel files can be updated once my 2010.2 is running? Thanks for any tips or suggestions. I read that 2010.2 is mostly bug fixes and updates from 2010.1, but if 2010.2 is not ready for prime-time I would also be interested in knowing..... Thanks -- Roger
  4. How can I access as a mass storage device?? I can see that it exists on Konqueror, but it does not allow me to access/open it. Is it safe to say that Mandriva 2010.1 is the current release of choice?? Thanks -- Roger
  5. Hello, I am running Mandriva 2008.1. I have successfully been using Digicam with my old camera (and any that I tried of my friend's cameras). Digicam version says 0.9.3 with Gphoto lib version 2.4.0. In any case, I hooked up a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3, turned on the Lumix, and the desktop just sat for a while (usually the Digicam fired right up with the old camera, a Kodak CX6200). Finally it recognized the camera as a DMZ-FZ20, and tried to download pictures. It just churned awhile, and came up with 'failed to connect to camera...make sure it is connected properly and turned on... abort or retry'. I retried with the same result. I also tried to 'edit' the camera, and the whole digicam app crashed. The USB connector is different for the Lumix, so I guess it is possible that is bad (but it looks pretty new). Any suggestions?? Hopefully this is a common, simple problem, with a simple solution. Thanks -- Roger
  6. Hello, I looked in my available software, and the latest Firefox is 3.0.0.x. If I am going through the upgrade, I would prefer to get as far along the upgrade cycle as possible (as I obviously don't do it tooooo often) Not sure if my sources from URPMI are correct, or if this is the last 'official' Firefox for 2008.1?? Could be I have not enabled the correct source. Is there any issue with download from Mozilla? I am a novice, and would prefer an RPM so it will just click and load - I am a long way from building my own version..... Regards -- Roger
  7. Hello, I am on Mandriva 2008.1, and am running into the occasional browser (downlevel) problem. The browser is the supplied Firefox 2.0.0.13, and I noticed that Firefox is in the 3.5.x range. The upgrade is not super urgent, but I am wondering if there is a real stable version to go to now (and what is it) or if I should wait a bit until it stabilizes further.... Is upgrading a simple matter of downloading and installing the new version, or is there generally trouble with interaction with the currently installed version?? I would like to have some idea of what I am getting into before I get started. I do plan to save my bookmarks, etc, prior to the upgrade. Thanks for any insight you can provide. Regards -- Roger
  8. Thanks, and shockingly enough it fixed the problem!! I gather that the max system MTU is 1500, and some sites tack on extra (for some purpose or another) which exceeds the 1500 limit and things bounce. Supposedly the 1492 allows 8 (bytes?) of tacked on info so that the 1500 limit is not exceeded. Need to talk to someone that knows what they are talking about to get a coherent description.... I read somewhere that this is addressed in 10.1?? But that is not my system.... Thanks and regards - I am up and running!!! Roger
  9. Mine is also at 1500. Do you know how to adjust it to 1492?? Sounds like not much difference to me, but then again I am no expert...... Thanks -- Roger
  10. Hello, The ISP indicated that I should check the system MTU, with at recommended rate of 1492. Does anyone know how I can check / adjust that?? Comments?? Thanks -- Roger
  11. Yes, the GUI says that there is both a primary and secondary DNS server specified. I do have a button in the back of the modem to restore defaults, but since I have changed nothing, I am pretty certain that it is in default mode..... Perhaps I should open a new post in a different category more relevant to this issue?? Regards -- Roger
  12. I did manage to login to the GUI - missed the "admin" and "admin" until I found the manual on a different site and downloaded. Looks like the following features are disabled - firewall, IGMP multicast, NAT, and Quality of Service. Any hints as to what I need to access or change to try to address my access problem would be appreciated.... With my very limited knowledge, it looks like the lack of NAT could be contributing to my problem?? Regards -- Roger
  13. I read through the info on the D-link site, but doesn't seem to cover the firewall or what the GUI looks like. I did try to log in on http://192.168.1.1, but it keeps rejecting my login efforts. The website indicates 'admin' and blank are the defaults (didn't work), "admin" and my admin password (didn't work), and user and user password (didn't work). Not sure if this is an artifact of the modem problem or something else.... I sort of assumed the link was pretty direct and should work? On a slightly different topic (assuming I do get in to configure the modem). I am a novice at the firewall stuff, and I plan on not moving from a single computer configuration (the modem will only be serving my home computer). How should I configure the setup?? My plan was to rely on the Linux firewall, and not use the modem firewall (having both may be causing my grief, I guess). Suggestions and reasoning will be helpful. I also could use some guidance on what I will be seeing on the GUI and what actions to take (unless it is pretty obvious). I am a bit out of my depth here... Thanks -- Roger
  14. Interesting enough, I can't load that page via DSL to get the information. Hopefully I can get in via modem, find the info I need, and I assume backward configure the DSL modem. Not sure how this works, but it sounds interesting!! Looks like a solution may be at hand!! Thanks -- Roger
  15. The adsl modem came from my ISP and is a d-link 2320b - I don't think there is anything near a firewall in there (if there is, it is missing a lot that is hitting Linux). Maybe the modem is the problem - probably pretty inexpensive item. I will call the ISP on Monday and see if they have any insight. I am pretty sure that they don't provide much, if any, in the way of any Linux support.
  16. Given the amount of action the firewall is getting (maybe it is just Christmas cheer.....) I am a bit hesitant to turn it off. What is dmesg and where do I look for it??
  17. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 is exactly the same as you have. I have been running a modem, with no changes to the firewall. Is the treatment of DSL vs modem different for the firewall, and is an adjustment there required?? Perhaps that could explain why the authentication sites are problematic?? I did find where the DNS was set, but did not see any kind of control panel for the firewall. I have noticed a lot more scanning attacks since I went to DSL.....
  18. 2008.1 according to the disks....
  19. Cleared cache, powered down entire system (including DSL modem) - no change. Seems like the system gets to the point of loading the 'next' page, and something holds it back and it just stalls..... Thanks for the help - hopefully there is nothing you like better than a knotty linux problem. Merry Christmas!!!!
  20. Good idea, but clearing the cache did not help. Still hangs in the same place. I did think that it stalled on all authentication sites, but it does work logging into yahoo mail...... so at least in one case an authentication site does not stall out....?? Regards -- Roger
  21. Hi - Inserted the suggested script to disable IPV6, and no change. Still hangs in the same place on my eBay test case...... (I did reboot after the change to make sure the change was loaded) Thanks -- Roger
  22. Thanks for the recommendations. Just wanted to clarify what is happening - as an example, I can browse eBay, but when I try and long into my account, it 'connects' to the login page based on dialog on the bottom of the page, and then just hangs (usually use Mozilla, but Konqueror says 97% loaded then can't get further). Also, are there any security issues with disabling the ipv6?? Looked a bit on the web, and it seems like an address extender, but with some security features..... Regards -- Roger
  23. Worked plug and play through the ethernet port!! I am having access problems to some sites. Could be mainly secure sites accessed via modem. Is there a known problem/solution?? Speed is way up, but if you can't get in it is meaningless........ Regards -- Roger
  24. Thanks very much for the info. Contacting my isp to assure there are no restrictions on modem. I have ethernet so will connect that way. For some reason I like the looks of the linksys. Looking forward to getting a speed boost on my connection. Regards -- Roger
  25. Hello, Finally looking to upgrade to dsl from dial-up, and running Mandriva 2008. Is there a recommended modem that would be basically plug-and-play?? Looked in the compatibility guide and found no entries. USB or ethernet connection better?? Not looking for wireless or any of that - reliability and ease of use are my priorities. Thanks for any insights. Regards -- Roger
