  1. Yes, I do want to be able to boot off a DVD/CD as an option. Will setting the DVD to master and the disk to slave 'hard-wire' in this boot sequence, or will I have to edit the bios once I get the system up?? I will almost always have the DVD empty/no bootable DVD, but I would like the option to intervene prior to booting into Linux.
  2. Hello, Getting ready for a new mother board, which has only 1 IDE slot. OK because I really only want to run a DVD burner/reader and a hard drive. I figured that I wanted the system to first read the DVD reader and then move to the hard drive, so I jumpered both as cable select, and then put the DVD reader at the end of the cable (master) and the drive in the middle (slave). The bios did not like that one little bit - said there was no master. I then jumpered the drive as master, and left the cabling and DVD jumper alone. The system boots fine now off the drive, and it seems that the system does a handshake with the DVD before the drive kicks in. I'm not sure that I got what I wanted (with regards to the DVD being actually tried first). Is this setup correct, or do I need to also set the DVD as master? Can/should each device type have a designated master as far as the bios/IDE cable is concerned ? Thanks -- Roger
  3. Thanks for the input. I did order a card, so I'll see how it works (may get back if the bios needs an edit, as I have not done that before). The motherboard is older, with AGP and PCI only. The existing graphics card is about 12 years old, so a low-end agp card probably describes it (if not too complementary). My system really gets bogged down on the web recently, and I am assuming this is due to the remarkable amounts of graphics (advertising) that is being pushed to the computer. It could be that I will have to update the computer further with a current mother board and new CPU. I wanted to address this one step at a time, and am hoping that the graphics card will at least provide some temporary relief...... Thanks -- Roger
  4. Thanks for the info - I'll give the 8400 a try!! Regards -- Roger
  5. Hello, Sorry about this second post on the graphics cards, but as I get more involved it becomes less clear..... I am currently running a Rage IIc AGP card. Can I switch over to a PCI card (I have extra slots) or is this not possible from a hardware/cpu perspective?? Since there do not seem to be any current performance AGP 1x cards being made anymore, if I can't switch it is finally getting time for a new computer.... Thanks -- Roger PS - if the switch over is possible, any comments on my earlier post would be appreciated.....
  6. Hello, Looking to finally upgrade my graphics card (with the hope of a little improved system performance). Currently running a 3D Rage IIC. I read here that it is useful to go with Nvidia for compatibility benefits, and would like to go with something fairly current but not bleeding edge (no gaming requirements what-so-ever). The Sparkle GeForce 8400GS seemed like a good solution - has anyone had any experience with the card, or is there a recommended alternate vendor ? Thanks -- Roger
  7. It seems that I can change other icons - I tried the Home icon, and when I went to properties I clicked on the home icon on the first tab, and the system went off looking for potential icons (now, at least, I know what that looks like....). Not sure what you mean by rename .kde4 ??
  8. Well, I am on KDE 4.4.5. Sounds like the icon feature is working fine for other 4.4.5 installs?
  9. How do I get KDE to divulge it's current version ??
  10. Right click on desktop, then 'create new - link to application'. Went to the third tab, called it firefox 9.0, used to the browse to go to and select usr/local/firefox/firefox. Tried the icon on the first tab, but nothing happened, so I just created the link. A sheet icon with a ? in the middle appeared on the desktop with firefox 9.0 below it, and it works fine (launches firefox no problems). It sounds like everything worked as advertised except the icon select..... I will say that when I did my system upgrade from the upgrade manager a few days ago, there was a LARGE KDE upgrade included. I am thinking that maybe that has a bug in it?? Thanks -- Roger
  11. Well, I understand exactly what you are saying and what should be happening, but clicking on the cog execute icon (I am assuming on the 'general' tab of the properties pop-up) does absolutely nothing. No indication that there is anything there to click on (no color change, no nothing). I am running 2010.2, and just last week upgraded my system with every upgrade available through the package update manager. This should be so simple - a bit baffling.... I did try to generate another application link, figuring that maybe I did something wrong the first time, but still no life on the execute icon. Thanks -- Roger
  12. Yep, that is exactly what I am looking for.... When I select properties, I go to exactly the same tool that I used to create the launcher, and populated with what I entered. I gather that in the 'General' tab there is an icon that I can click on, but all that is there is the cog like execute icon that appears when you double click on the icon - but left click, right click, nothing happens. Under the 'application' tab there is a 'work path', but I am guessing that is not for the icon location. I had heard about clicking on the icon graphic in the 'general' tab and being able to browse to the firefox icon, but there does not seem to be a live icon....... All that is on the screen now is a white sheet with a blue question mark in it (and Firefox 9.0 in text below - I at least got that in....) Interesting enough, I tried to edit the properties file, and was denied when I tried to save it (hit OK button). Do I need to be su to create this launcher properly?? It seems odd that I could create it as a user, but cannot edit it as a user. thanks -- Roger
  13. Well Firefox 9.0 is up and running fine, and no problem creating a launcher on the desktop. I cannot figure out how to link the launcher to the firefox icon. I created the launcher by right clicking on the desktop and using 'create new link to application'. I did not spot anywhere where I could insert the icon link?? Is there a secret or do I have to approach it another way?? Thanks
  14. Perfect - thank you. I'll unpack it into usr/local and work on the links. Thanks for your patience with all of the questions.... Regards -- Roger
  15. Thanks, almost enough detail for me.... Do you mean /usr/lib rather than /usr/local ?? When I execute the tar command, will it automatically create a directory in /usr/? for the firefox 9 files? Thanks -- Roger
  16. Thanks. I've downloaded the .tar, and will get some help with the commands to do the install. Sounds like only a couple of lines...... Regards -- Roger
  17. Yep, time to consider other alternatives.....
  18. Hello, I found a 9.0.1 rpm for 2011, but ran into dependency issues when I tried to install. Since you have installed this successfully, it would seem that these dependencies do not need to be met?? Can I just run the install ignoring the dependency issues (an option given on the screen) or is that a formula for disaster? Seems that it would get me to the same place you guys are (or maybe not......) Thanks -- Roger
  19. Yep, same problem I have - wrapped around 2010.2. Redid all the mirrors in the control center, and got all the way up to Firefox 4.0.1. Even though it is in the 4 series, it seems not to have the update Firefox capability (I'm not sure how that would work with Mandriva root permission requirements anyways). I guess no efforts are even being made on the Mandriva side to backport current Firefox to 2010.2, even though I heard they are extending support to it. I'll look more into Willie's 8x approach. I did find an rpm for 8x for 2011, and given the amount of updating I've done I have to be pretty much there (I thought if you did all of the updating, it would take you there?? Surprised not to see a 2011 logo on my screen now....) No so amusing when it is so hard to get a current browser on your almost current release. Thanks -- Roger
  20. Hello, Well, I downloaded the Firefox 6.0 rpm supposedly for Mandriva from rpmfind.net. It would not install because it needed libproxy.so.1 (or at least that was the first dependency that was not met). Is there anywhere where I can download this such that all the dependent packages will also be identified and downloaded???? Thanks -- Roger
  21. Thanks Willie, On a good day, I'm pretty capable of downloading an RPM and double-clicking on it...... maybe a bit more. Downloading a tar and editing some script is beyond where I am willing to go unless I'm pretty desperate. Did you upgrade from 3.6, and if so did it go smoothly? Did you need to save bookmarks and all other personal bits? Thanks -- Roger
  22. Hello, I want to upgrade my Firefox (currently running 3.6.13 - yep, I know). Are there any issues or precautions to take with the upgrade, as I understand the whole structure of Firefox is different after 3.6 ?? Also, is there a recommended source for the RPM, and which Firefox version is currently 'safe' to migrate to? Thanks -- Roger
  23. Well, it looks like I finally need to use the automated update in Urpmi. Since I have always done the manual method before, is there a primer or a brief description as to how the automated feature works?? I am always a bit hesitant to provide root access to an automated process that I have no idea how it works and what it will be doing.... When I manually run a software update, it does look like the system is reaching out to and downloading the update source information. Maybe I am current aside from the Perl update. thanks -- Roger
  24. Hello, I went to update my system (after a wait of a month or so) to see what updates were out there, and there was only one for Perl (I think). Have there actually been no updates to 2010.2 over the last month, is my system broken, or is this the update problem that appears at the top of the forum?? I just want to know if I need to take some action, or is all is well. Thanks -- Roger
