  1. Hi~ Nice one! First off, I've read alot of your past posts over the year "ianw1974" and they are always upbeat and edcational, I think you're a good example to the community. thanks for that! :) Your solution is a good way to circumvent the system not being able to read any cd/dvd rom media, and I will indeed alter my methods as per your suggestions if I cannot find a more direct solution. URPMI done! The problem is; I don't exactly know what the problem is; hardware, software. I would kind of like my systems' drive to read any other discs though (aside from the install disc which reads fine). Any thoughts?
  2. Hi~ Happy new year to all! Thanks goto; Linux, Mandriva, Mods and rockers. I love it! Iv'e just upgraded my server and desktop boxes from 10.1 to 2006. (Also brothers desktop p4 and sisters laptop P3). Both my machines worked very well with 10.1, change is good! The desktop install went no probs at all, the server however is giving me some resistance. Its main job is to act as an ADSL firewall/router for the Mandrake/Win2k LAN. For the server; i did a clean install, 2006 dvd installed no probs at all. Tried to add thunderbird, unrar from dvd, drive spat out draw, i put the disc in and it spat the disc back out (disgusted) had to cancell after several re-attempts. Updated from mirrors and stripped out redundant services and apps. Tried to access user backup data on cd-rw disc and no joy for 2nd time running. Uninstalled Kat. So, i cant seem to access my dvd rom on my 2006 server now, except for the install disc. Strange! The thing is the reader is trying to access other discs, spinning up and down like they are badly scratched, which is not so. Also the LED on the drive stays on instead of bursting during a read op. Things improved significantly after uninstalling kat, instead of locking the gui up, mandriva now shows no files on the discs at all (DVD & CD variants), except for the DVD+R DVD5 install disc. Things I've tried so far: Considered if the 107Watt PSu was man enough? (pre KAT) Searched here for problems of this nature; nothing solid - uninstalled kat. Checked "Force no apic" Changed mount points and various settings Checked and rechecked fstab manually - ditto. Been to creatives' site for dvd specs; dvd5, cd-r + cd-rw all ok Tried same discs in another Mandriva desktop machine; ok Been through the BIOS ah-gain. Searched here for variating key words; cdrom, dvdrom, freezing, lockup etc. Swapped dvd drive for other working drives; same. Renewed ide cables; same. Searched google; something about 64bit archs. Ran through errata; Thanks for link! Smacked self 'round head with kipper; hmm, tasty! Server specs: Toshiba eqium desktop -onbaord ati and sound 128Mb RAM PII 250 Creative dvd reader realtek NIC Cyclone Nic USB keyboard Serial 3w mouse iiyama vm pro 502 Any suggestions, links, tips welcome please...
  3. I think a realistic solution for me is to muck about with Xorg and that diff file until i break the system a few times and get at least a PIII for the server as well. Thanks, for all your thoughts on this!
  4. Thanks for the ways ianw1974. I had already updated the packages for Mandrake 10.1 incl. the plf's, (i should have said that!=) but I did not realise I could update to the 10.2 stuff, I've just done that with the Xorg bits only and after a first lock out after loading to the desktop and a forced hard boot, it came back up again ok, there seemed to be slight improvements but unfortunately the main bugs still existed. I then went for the full urpmi upgrades and it's still the same, except some progs dont load anymore! You've got to laugh, I must have cleanly installed this dist maybe 30 times due to other probs and/or unrealistic expectations! :) I could just buy another graphics card, and may have to. I just wondered what other possible soloutions were availible as I do enjoy learning about Linux and Mandrake. I'm happy to go either way, but still remain curious here... Should I mark this thing "solved" as i dont want to needlessly pester anyone with a redundant (Matrox Mystique!) issue, or do you have any other possibilities that I could try and research myself? Thanks for your help, much appreciated!
  5. Hi~ Specs: PII - 266 196 Mb RAM 2 X Realteak 10/100 PCI NICs Matrox Mystique PCI 2 x HDD 10Gb total External Iomega CD-RW (now Internal:) Dell 17" Mandrake 10.1 Power Pack As gateway/router to win-2000 LAN I'm quite crap at using using Mandrake 10.1 and I've been having a bit o' trouble to say the least, however I'm getting there and I'd like to say that the forum has been a great help over the months and this is my first post on my fist forum. Anyway, my screen has bad redraw problems with a Matrox Mystique PCI. Scrolling corrupts the screen totally, I changed the monitor and still the same, experimented with the screen /etc/xorg/confs - and no change! Looking around, found a site: (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=124028) relating to a fedora? issue, explaining that the fault lies in the Xorg package when used with the Matrox card and to use: xorg-x11-6.7.0-5 or greater, there was also a link to a diff file, which I,ve now got. I also found on RPM find: xorg-x11-6.7.0-5 Whats the best ways to go here, as my experience is limited! Can I apply this fedora patch without any changes to the diff file for my Mandrake install and what would I apply it to! Can I upgrade to 10.2s rpms, or Thac's? Any help appreciated here!
