  1. Not a problemn, I think I made the decision that I was going to anyway and that is going to try out FC4. Thank you for all your help though, really rumple
  2. ok, I re-configured and manually entered my IP, mask, Gateway and DNS leaving search domain blank. I then edited /etc/resolv.conf as you had me do before. I then rebooted and still nothing. Is there anything else I can do, you have been so helpful. thank you very much
  3. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts, showed that eth0 is the one being used because it contained the IP address. So then I went into /etc/resolv.conf and put a # where you suggested. When I did that, I went in to MCC to verify, that IP was removed but so was the domain name. So when I recreated the connection again to reveal the domain name, I went back to /etc/resolv.conf and the # I added were gone. So I redid the whole thing, rebooted and the # were removed again. I'm assuming I'm not doing something right here. I hate to keep nagging you with this problem, I'm writing all this down and always have, so I felt I was learning more. Thank you
  4. ianw1974, I'm not quite sure what you meant for me to do within that file from above. Also, I noticed anytime I entered my IP etc. manually and set it to DHCP it was not saving that information I just entered, but it would when I set it to static. The connection doesn't work either way. Also 127.0.0.1 is one of my ISPs DNS servers. Thank you yet again :)
  5. static doesn't work either, here is the output of /etc/resolv.conf: search columbus.rr.com local # search columbus.rr.com nameserver 127.0.0.1 nameserver 65.24.7.3 # ppp temp entry I'm assuming an update couldn't of caused somekind of conflict? thank you for the help
  6. I did that right after I ran ifconfig -a and added alias net-pf-10 off. But I did fail to mention, it seems not to be finding the DHCP, after I manuall entered my IP, MASK, GATEWAY, it was seeing a static connection.
  7. I'm using firefox 1.0.2, which I wanted to upgrade to 1.0.7 but wasn't able to. The ifconfig -a output is as follows: [root@Lippy gian]# ifconfig -a eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:C5:5F:01:44 inet6 addr: fe80::200:c5ff:fe5f:144/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:5261 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:16 errors:0 dropped:129 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:251646 (245.7 Kb) TX bytes:1616 (1.5 Kb) Interrupt:16 Base address:0xc000 eth0:9 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:C5:5F:01:44 inet addr:127.255.255.255 Bcast:127.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) Interrupt:16 Base address:0xc000 eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:20:ED:36:E7:1D BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:17 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:2682 (2.6 Kb) Interrupt:20 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:424 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:424 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:31921 (31.1 Kb) TX bytes:31921 (31.1 Kb) sit0 Link encap:IPv6-in-IPv4 inet6 addr: ::65.186.87.50/96 Scope:Compat inet6 addr: ::127.255.255.255/96 Scope:Unknown inet6 addr: ::127.0.0.1/96 Scope:Unknown UP RUNNING NOARP MTU:1480 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) and since it did include sit0, I added alias net-pf-10 off to /etc/modprobe.conf, rebooted and there was no change. My network card is a Intel 21041-Based PCI Ethernet Adapter (Generic), in Windows XP. For some reason, it's recognized by Linux as DEC DecChip 21041-PB Tulip Plus Ethernet Adapter. And this PC has an onboard ethernet, Intel 82801DB ICH4 - LAN Controller with 82562ET/EZ (CNR) PHY [A-1], which in XP I was able to disable in Device Manager, I don't know how or if it needs to be disabled in Linux. Before I had to reinstall the first time, that was not a problem. Thank you very much, rumple
  8. You didn't specify any directory, such as where the file is located. tar -xzvf /what/ever/directory/firefox-1.0.7.installer.tar.gz after it installs, then cd firefox-installer followed by ./firefox-installer
  9. Several days ago, my bootloader somehow got messed up while I was screwing with different options in MCC (that was bad for a novice). Anyway, I ended up reinstalling MandrivaLE2005. At first the internet connection would only stay active until I did what I did in the browser session. As soon as I closed it and tried to connect with another app, there was nothing. So I formatted and tried again and the same thing happened. Finally, when I reinstalled it, the connection was great until I ran EASY_URPMI and UPATES. Only this time I did nothing after updating, and after updating there was absolutely no connection. So to me updating (or one of it's files) caused this, but how am I suppose to know which file, there were 226? So now I'm hoping the experts will help, please Thank you in advance :)
  10. Thank you both for the clarification :)
  11. I'm not sure what you mean by that?
  12. I'm wanting to build rom source mplayer. I have all the files necessary, however, the link for the instructions always hangs until it times out. I thought the site was down, but it did the same thing for a few days. Is there anyway, or does anyone know how I could get those instructions or a website that might have them? Thank you in advance,
  13. Hello, I was attempting to update through MCC, and I was getting a message saying it was impossible to do so, and my contrib, updates and main needed removed and reinstalled. So I removed them from MCC, easy_urpmi would install contrib and updates, but it wouldnt connect to the ftp for main. This was this error I got, thank you P.S. I got that message for three different servers [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  14. I tried that but forgot the -a, thank you very much
  15. Hi all, I have been unsuccessful in installing VLC. When I run the following command as SU from URL I countue to receive the following message: [root@gian gian]# urpmi libdvdcss2 libdvdplay0 wxvlc vlc-plugin-a52 vlc-plugin-ogg vlc-plugin-mad ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandra...102plf.i586.rpm ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandra...102plf.i586.rpm ...retrieving failed: curl: (19) Given file does not exist ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandra...102plf.i586.rpm ...retrieving failed: curl: (19) Given file does not exist ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandra...102plf.i586.rpm ...retrieving failed: curl: (19) Given file does not exist ...retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with 19 or signal 0 Installation failed, some files are missing: ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandra...102plf.i586.rpm ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandra...102plf.i586.rpm ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandra...102plf.i586.rpm ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/plf/mandra...102plf.i586.rpm You may want to update your urpmi database ...retrieving failed: curl: (19) Given file does not exist I ran EASY-URPMI (because that's how I thought urpmi was updated) and it said everything already exists. So please someone let me know what I'm missing. Thank you
  16. I was able to disable it, everything is cool now. Thank you
  17. I ended up deleting eth1 as its an on-board ethernet and then stopped harddrake in services. However, now it seems that eth1 which I thought I deleted is interferring with eth0. The reason I say this is because I had to start eth0 manually to get the Internet. Is there anyway through the command line I could just delete eth1 all together? Thank you again
  18. Hello, after booting in to Linux, more often than not, I need to reboot a second time to get my Internet connection to work. I saw that eth0 & eth1 were both being started up, so I went in to MCC Network & Internet first to configure eth1 interface not to start at boot time, then deleted that interface. Rebooted and they both started again, only this time the Internet connection worked fine. I'm assuming there is a service running that restarts it, only I don't know which one that would be?? I don't even know if that's the problem. Could someone please help me out with this. thank you
  19. jboy, I appreciate you not giving me the answer this time around. Right when I read your post, something came to mind, now the printer is working great. Thanks again
  20. jboy, I went through the documentsation layed out for me on that PDF. Downloaded the file into the /tmp directory, unzipped and ran the RPM and finally ran the final script. It asked me question suck as paper type etc, even confirmed a successful install. But it still won't print, in fact it doesn't even show what I installed as installed, it shows PostScript/default. Not sure what happened here, please advise Thank you
  21. jboy, That looks like it's going to actually work for me (but I'm doing so maybe not). There is something I do not understand and was hoping you'd clarify it for me. Before I install it wants me to Set up an administrative user group. During the installation of Lexmark Print Drivers, you will be asked if you want to change the administrative user group for Lexmark Print Drivers. The default administrative group on all systems except AIX is bin. The default administrative group on AIX is printq. If you have an administrative group on your host, you might want to use that group as the Lexmark Print Drivers administrative group. Non-administrative users cannot add or remove printer queues. See Change an administrative group name for more information. I'm going to try googling it, but if that doesn't work out, I hope you or anyone could help me with that. Thanks a million
  22. The files available are .rpm.gz. How would that be installed? Thank you
  23. polemicz, I went back to Lexmarks to double check. And to my surprise they listed that printer/driver along with many others that weren't there before. Anyway, it lists the drivers and the only Linux distros supported for that printer is SuSE and Red Hat. I am going to take your advice and do a board and google search more. I do have that printer installed on my XP side, but there were install discs. A friend of mine came across this URL I'm going to read over it and see what I can find. If all fails, I guess I'll have to contact Lexmark. There has to be a way, I just don't understand how it can autodetect the right model and then not support it. Thanks again for all your help, including all that suggested.
  24. Thank you for your response. Before I tried to configure through CUPS I tried MCC and it autodetected my printer (E234). However, when I chose to install it, it installed a different model (Lexmark3000). It does have an option there saying to try the PPD file, which is on my install disc. I tried that and found out it's only an informational file telling to go to lexmark website. Which I did, and they don't even have they're own printer numbver, sad. Anyway, I finally got into CUPS and it only gave me the printer type/drivers: Lexmarks - 4076, Z11, Z42, Z43, Z52, Z53 and ALLinONE My printer is on a parallel port, and I feel Linux would support it, or how did it autodetect it? I'm at a loss
  25. Sorry to hit on this again, however, I'm still having problems. Can someone please let me where to go/do next based on my last post/reply? Thank you very much
