  1. Thanks guys, i now have working nvidia drivers. I really must get some reading glasses its X11 not x11. Doh! i have another small problem, when i boot up the system it disconnects my internet and i have to reboot the router and modem, not very convenient. i'll try posting in networking Thanks again for being there for us its really appreciated TF
  2. Hi i just looked for the file in konq and it is there with the module section and everything, but if i try to edit it through a console, vi /etc/x11/xorg.conf its blank and it says new file! i don't quite understand.
  3. forgot to say this is new install of 2006 in which the stock nv driver seems to be broken. i've got it running with a vesa driver at the moment 256 colors and text login, looks horrible.
  4. Sorry i know this is an old topic but i can't find the answer. I've downloaded and installed the driver from Nvidia along with the kernel-source with not too much problem. When i come to edit the xorg.conf file it appears to be completely empty. no idea what to do next. Help. Thanks [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  5. Hi, When you installed 2005 you were prompted to enter a password for root and at least one user. Try logging in as root and enter the password you must have set. Once logged in create another user account through configure your computer option in the start menu. good luck
  6. Hi Guys I think i sorted the problem. The problem seems to be that i was using auto logon! and wasn't cleanly logging out somehow. Just turned it off and rebooted as root and it worked ok. Thanks for the ideas it inspired me. Regards Ted
  7. i understand that logging in is using the system, what i don't understand is why the helpfile tells me log in as root and then unmount the drive if its not possible. The helpfile is very clear that this is how to do it. is the helpfile wrong? or have i misunderstood, (this is more likely)! Really all i want to do is make my /home dir smaller and make the empty space a seperate partition for general backup of personal files. Any ideas on the simplist way to achieve this would be gratefully received. Ted
  8. hi, i want to create a new partition for backups. my /home partition is 107gb. I've followed the howto help file in disk drake i.e. i log out as user and in as root but when i try to unmount /home i get ( error unmounting /home, device or resource busy ). Any ideas what needs to be done to unmount /home for partitioning would be appreciated. Thanks Ted
  9. i think i can safely say that the problem is now resolved, not had a single halted download since the firmware upgrade. thanks to all for your support, knowledge and patience. Loved Suse but will stay with Mdk, just seems to have the edge ( for me ) at the moment. Used the spare mobo with new cpu and ram to upgrade my daughters box ( xp only, sad child ). ah well, waste not want not. TF
  10. i'm beginning to think some of you guys here are a bit psycic! just did that very thing about 10 mins ago. Went from 2.21 to 2.37eu and the signs are looking pretty good with no halted downloads "yet". the update also resets the router to factory spec, it may have been that, in which case it was more than likely my fault, bad setting or something. I'll check back and let you all know the state of play later cheers
  11. Strangely enough i had a dg834 before a friend gave me the linksys, he was sent the wrong item from misco and they didn't want it back! I think its the 834g with the wireless connection. Think i 'll get me one of them. i have to agree netgear is good kit and i never had any problems with it . See, there is no such thing as a free lunch.
  12. Hey guys In desperation i went and bought a new mobo, guess what yep just the same. Started looking at the router(linksyswrg54g) mmmmmmmmmm. Plugged the modem directly into nic and guess what. Perfect. Had quite a job getting the router to work again at all! when it did quess what, first download stopped just the same. Fairly sure now that it is a router issue (bugger ). Tried loads of settings, firewall off etc, no luck, could be its broken? Any suggestions for a good wireless router preferably with no modem and at least 4 ethernet ports? Cheap would be good and also compatible with linux! Anybody want to buy an Asrock K7S41 mobo? (joke)
  13. No option for pnp os in the bios, bios can't be very old as its a new machine, i'll check it and flash with a new one if its available
  14. No its just the same, just coincidence. Furthermore i downloaded suse 9.2 installed that and guess what! Yep just the same. Clearly not a Mamdrake issue. Tried installing a new network card it makes no difference. The Motherboard is made by Asrock is there any chance its not compatible with a linux os? As i said xp has no problem, 9.2=3.2gig in 5 hours but i don't want to use xp. This is really frustrating ( sounds os gnashing teeth and hair being pulled out )
  15. good morning all Tried this morning, just the same. Remarked out the "search linksys" line in resolv.conf and on reboot that appears to work. I've downloaded quite a few test files one of which was 147mb with only one failure. Later I'll try putting the line back in to see if the problem occurs again. I'll keep you posted many thanks to all for your assistance
  16. adamw did that , made no difference. arctic read all of that (bloody hell ) took option 2. dns servers now stay as set on reboot, deactivated ipv6 but alas still no joy, I hope i can sort this problem as this version seems really sorted in all other ways. Went to suse from mdk because of seemingly unsolvable problems (all of which are are now not a problem) just my luck! Please keep the ideas coming guys.
  17. on reboot the dns servers revert to just primary dns as 192.168.1.1 and resolv.conf reflects this also. Problem still there!
  18. set the primary and secondary dns servers to that of my isp, still the same results, i have tried this before as well. the contents of /etc/resolv.conf are search linksys nameserver 194.106.56.6 nameserver 194.106.33.42 # nameserver 192.168.1.1 # ppp temp entry
  19. i'd just like to add that its not just one particular file thats affected its any and all files. i've tried quite a few from different servers with the same results.
  20. Hi i connect through a linksys wrv54g router which connects to a ADSL Nation x modem ce. Its a 2mbit connection. I've checked /etc/nsswitch.conf and the line is there . The connection is set up with DHCP and the first dns is set to 192.168.1.1 which is the ip address for the router. Windows works with no problems. Same stuff also works well with Suse 9.1. Ordinary web surfing works fine in MDK probably because pages are not that large. The only time this problem shows is downloading large files, sometimes i can get 2,4, or 6mb or more before it stops downloading. Once i actually downloaded the whole thing! Must be something set wrong just don't know what?
  21. Hi all, just set up a new machine and thought i'd try MDK 10.2 instead of Suse, for a look see. Well what can i say except brilliant. I have a small problem though, when i start a download from the net all seems fine but then it just stops and sits there with nothing happening and will not continue. Its dual booted with xp and that appears to download ok. I've also transferred a 2gig folder over the network with no problems so i think the hardware is not the problem. Any ideas for a resolution to this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks [moved from Software by spinynorman]
