  1. The whole story : 2 weeks ago I went to spain for a short break, took my laptop for the Photography side of my trip (Eee asus). Arrived there I found the connection a bit slow to my usual server for updates. I changed my setting for a local server in Spain and did my updates. I usually do urpmi.update -a followed by urpmi --auto-select. Since I get the constant following error: Preparing... ############################################# 1/3: glibc ############################################# error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/bin/getconf;47d8ea78: cpio: link failed - Invalid cross-device link 2/3: glibc-devel ############################################# 3/3: meta-task ############################################# ---------------------------------------------------------------------- More information on package glibc-2.7-11mnb1.i586 Warning: it's recommended that you restart all programs dependent upon glibc or restart the system after glibc upgrade. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- restarting urpmi This error keep coming and is a pain although it does not seem to affect the system and my urpmi gets updated anyway. Any thoughts?? Stef
  2. The first release candidate, codenamed Serapias, for Mandriva Linux 2008 Spring (2008.1) is now available. There is information about the new release in various places: ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Man...iso/2008.1/rc1/ But still a message of warning : http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/2008.1_RC_1 Stef [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  3. A very small laptop runnig Xandros? Umm it sounds like an eee to me, see my posts oh how to install mandriva on it or on usb key (mcnl live toronto) or Breeezy (puppy linux) or Eeedora (based on FC 8) see : http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ stef
  4. Ooops, you know, it'stwice I do that! Not such a good keyboard... Stef :D
  5. Hi, I've done a little page about my experience of 2008.1 beta 2 on the tiny laptop from Asus, I hope it can help to make people aware of the quality of the Mandriva distro and to help people to decide to buy one of these tiny mighty PCs (only about £ 230!!) 6. Hi, My contribution for this month, mandriva 2008.1 beta 2, on eee asus p701, kernel 2.6.24.2-laptop-4mdv. I use conky as a system monitor and compiz on xfce 4.4. ;)
  7. Good morning, I am the happy owner of an eee p701 from asus and I have been running Mandriva on it for a month now. I have chosen to use the 2008.1 version in order to get out of the box working drivers. All is good but I can't manage to make some of the fn keys work (additional keys for acpi stuff). So in order to enable them I am trying to install the modules for acpi from source. I have the sources and have installed my kernel source too : [root@localhost asus_acpi]# uname -r 2.6.24.2-laptop-4mdv [root@localhost asus_acpi]# rpm -qa |grep kernel madwifi-kernel-2.6.24.2-laptop-1mdv-0.9.3.3-1.r3114mdv2008.1 kernel-headers-2.6.24-5mdv2008.1 kernel-laptop-latest-2.6.24.2-4mdv2008.1 kernel-source-latest-2.6.24.2-4mdv2008.1 kernel-laptop-devel-2.6.24.2-4mdv-1-1mdv2008.1 kernel-source-2.6.24.2-4mdv-1-1mdv2008.1 kernel-laptop-2.6.24.2-4mdv-1-1mdv2008.1 madwifi-kernel-laptop-latest-0.9.3.3-1.20080211.1.r3114mdv2008.1 kernel-laptop-2.6.24.2-3mdv-1-1mdv2008.1 [root@localhost asus_acpi]# I also made sure that the begining of the Makefile is ponting to the right places : KERNEL_VERSION := $(shell uname -r) KERNEL_DIR := /lib/modules/$(KERNEL_VERSION)/build But when I try to build the module here is what happens: root@localhost asus_acpi]# make clean rm -f *.o *.ko .*.cmd .*.flags *.mod.c Module.symvers rm -rf .tmp_versions [root@localhost asus_acpi]# make Building ASUS ACPI driver... make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.24.2-laptop-4mdv' CC [M] /home/stephane/Desktop/acpi/asus_acpi/asus_acpi.o /home/stephane/Desktop/acpi/asus_acpi/asus_acpi.c:164: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type /home/stephane/Desktop/acpi/asus_acpi/asus_acpi.c:550: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer type /home/stephane/Desktop/acpi/asus_acpi/asus_acpi.c: In function ‘asus_hotk_notify’: /home/stephane/Desktop/acpi/asus_acpi/asus_acpi.c:1181: error: implicit declaration of function ‘acpi_bus_generate_event’ make[2]: *** [/home/stephane/Desktop/acpi/asus_acpi/asus_acpi.o] Error 1 make[1]: *** [_module_/home/stephane/Desktop/acpi/asus_acpi] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.24.2-laptop-4mdv' make: *** [asus_acpi] Error 2 [root@localhost asus_acpi]# So here are my questions : 1- What have I done wrong ? Have I got the right source for a laptop-mdv version of kernel? 2- The acpi does not work out of the box but it is not really a bug, shall I report it on bugzilla anyway? Thanks for your help, this is the last bit hindering me from completing my "how-to" on the Eee wiki ( http://wiki.eeeuser.com/mandiva_2008_on_eee_pc)in order to keep our distro at the front of the pack for he asus little marvel! Stef :)
  8. Hi, I am running 2008.1 beta 2 with the latest laptop kernel on an Eee PC (asus) and xfce 4.0 as a window manager. I am trying to find the right set of application to optimize space speed without compromising usability. In order to make spce I tried to mount /home on an sdcard and must have done a wrong manip as I could not log on any more. In the original /home there was a few big files that I do not need. In order the be able to log back in as a user I had to remove my user and recreate it. I have now mounted succesfully /home on my card but the space occupied by my original user is still used?! I tried find to find the files but I don't find them. I suppose the system must have put them somewhere in a lost&found or other? Can anyone tell me where to look for them or how to ask the system to clean any unused temporary files/lost-found/cache etc. The aim is to find out exactly how much my install is taking, but with these files around, my space reporting is wrong... Thank you Stef [ I had to relog under root, unmount /home (which was mounted on sd card) then the "old" home reappeared with the lost files. Then I copied the old home to the sd card, removed it from the hard drive the ln -s to the card and all space was recovered! Thnks to tof = berthy from cooker]
  9. Keeping the thread alive! Hi, I could not resist to install and test-drive the beta-2 version of the Mandriva-sping 2008, and the news is : it works fine on the eeepc (P 701 asus mini laptop). [stephane@localhost ~]$ df Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 3.3G 2.3G 1010M 70% / [stephane@localhost ~]$ uname -r 2.6.24.2-laptop-1mdv [stephane@localhost ~]$ I have installed quite a lot of stuff, it all works. Harware-wise, the sounde buttons still don't work out of the box but we shall see, it seems easy to activate them. The 3d is stunning and flawless with all the options on. Try it, love it, keep it! Stef
  10. http://distrowatch.com/ and the nluug server goes like s**t off a stick!
  11. Hi, I am back with my booting problems on the Eee laptop from Asus. I am testing the installation of 2008.1 on an external usb disk for that laptop. The aim is to keep Mandriva on external disk and Xandros on the internal ssd (very fast boot - 30 secs). In order to install 2008.1 on the usb external hard drive I had to cheat : I unplugged all the hard drive from my Desktop and booted on the cdrom (2008.1 live) therefore fooling the installer in thinking the external drive was the only drive on board (in order for the drive to get the sda label). Thanks to this method, I can install and boot the Eee on 2008.1 on external drive with a booting time of approx. 80 seconds. Acceptable for me as once booted the lan/wifi/webcam/sound/3d work perfectly and it's really a great distro on this machine. Nevertheless in order to progress I need the more recent kernel , 2.6.24-desktop586-0.rc8.2mdv is the one I run successfully. Any other kernel and the Eee won't boot despite trying noapic, nolapic, irqpoll. MY QUESTIONS: 1- How can I get the source to compile 2.6.24-desktop586-0.rc8.2mdv? 2-Any ideas why Mandriva will not boot except if I use the kernel used during prime install? Thanks for your help, Stef (fighting for Mandriva being a great distro for the Eee PC!! see : http://wiki.eeeuser.com/mandiva_2008_on_eee_pc )
  12. Hi There, I am trying to optimise my install of Mandriva 2008 on the asus P701 mini laptop. I installed as described there : https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtop...139&hl=asus My mandriva is on a usb external driver, on the first partition and so far has the following install: [root@localhost stephane]# uname -a Linux localhost 2.6.22.9-desktop586-1mdv #1 SMP Thu Sep 27 03:58:17 CEST 2007 i686 Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 900MHz GNU/Linux [root@localhost stephane]# uname -r 2.6.22.9-desktop586-1mdv All is good, although not that fast (slow usb drive). My problem is to try to get a more recent kernel. So far the updates have installed for me some better version 2.6.22.12-desktop-1mdv being the most recent. In order to boot I have to chose the linux-nonfb noapic nolapic otherwise I get a kernel panic at the end of the initrd. If I do any other kernel than the 22.9 I get a kernel panic. My Lilo :[root@localhost stephane]# cat /etc/lilo.conf # File generated by DrakX/drakboot # WARNING: do not forget to run lilo after modifying this file default="linux" boot=/dev/sda map=/boot/map install=menu keytable=/boot/uk-latin1.klt menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw compact prompt nowarn timeout=100 message=/boot/message disk=/dev/sda bios=0x80 image=/boot/vmlinuz-desktop label="linux" root=/dev/sda1 initrd=/boot/initrd-desktop.img append="resume=/dev/sda5 splash=silent" vga=788 image=/boot/vmlinuz label="linux-nonfb" root=/dev/sda1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="resume=/dev/sda5" image=/boot/vmlinuz label="failsafe" root=/dev/sda1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="failsafe" image=/boot/vmlinuz label="desktop586_2.6.22.9-1" root=/dev/sda1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="resume=/dev/sda5 splash=silent" vga=788 image=/boot/vmlinuz-desktop586 label="desktop586_2.6.22.12-1" root=/dev/sda1 initrd=/boot/initrd-desktop586.img append="resume=/dev/sda5 splash=silent" vga=788 image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22.12-desktop586-1mdv label="alt_desktop586_2.6.22.12-1" root=/dev/sda1 initrd=/boot/initrd.img append="resume=/dev/sda5 splash=silent" vga=788 image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22.12-desktop-1mdv label="desktop_2.6.22.12-1" root=/dev/sda1 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.22.12-desktop-1mdv.img append="resume=/dev/sda5 splash=silent" vga=788 [root@localhost stephane]# Sorry, I feel more at home with lilo... (Boooh) My questions: Is there any other options than noapic/nolapic which could work? Can I write the noapic nolapic bit somewhere in order to avoid retyping it? Any idea why the old kernel is the only one to work? Thanks for your help Stef
  13. This How-to is , so far, for an install of Mandriva 2008 on an external usb hard drive using the Asus Eee P701. It is a very basic install I have not tried everything but the wi-fi and the sound work as well as all the 3D Desktop features (Metisse, Compiz-Fusion) including the transparencies. Hardware required : -Eee asus P701 -Usb external cd reader -Usb external Hard drive with a partition of at least 3 GB free for root. -A lot of patience... 0-Some work before you start if you are not a Mandriva user: http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/installmdv2008.0.html 1-Boot the Eee on the hard-drive with the cdrom Mandriva 2007.1 (spring) inside making sure that the wifi is on (blue light on). 2-Let the normal boot occur with no other option. If you get a kernel panic type noapic nolapic as an option. 3-Answer the usual question of language and location, choosing no 3d desktop for the first boot will speed-up the process. 4-Once Kde is running click on the install Icon and be patient , took 35 mins for me on a very old external CDROM reader. At this stage you will have to configure your partitions, I chose 10GB for root and 2GB of swap. 5- When probed for the boot order and where to install it, make sure you choose your external hard-drive or this will alter you stock distro. REBOOT 6-When rebooting, press the escape key and choose your usb drive to boot. 7-You need to be confortable to work so I advise to reduce the taskbar to tiny, reduce the icons to 24 and enable metisse in order to have more space. 8-Enable the wifi: We need here to use a windows driver (sorry) and ndiswrapper to make it useable in linux. Follow religiously the instructions there: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:configurendi...s=wifi%20driver it works perfectly first time,if not you have missed an important detail! Once online, I suggest you pay a visit to easy urpmi and update your system. I did a cleanup, removing all the nvidia stuff and all the languages I don't need. I also installed xfce to see if there was any speed gain. I didn't notice any... 9-Enable the sound : Edit /etc/modprobe.conf and add the line “options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig†to get sound working working. At this stage I had to reboot in order to have the sound working, it might not be necessary, please correct if it is the case. 10- Configure the system to your preferences In order to install codecs and oter necessities to play videos and music properly I suggest to go to: http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/configuration2008.0.html Lots of advice there with screen shots etc... I also advise a few addons for firefox : CrossFTP, FullerScreen, Download Statusbar. That will save you some space, along with a compact theme if you still feel a bit tight. Points still not checked : Webcam Ethernet Sleep mode Wifi fn Key etc... :D
  14. Victory, I managed to make wifi work on my asus eee pc, using the "how-to" on : http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:configurendiswrapper You need to follow the instructions religiously and the wifi will work. To install Mandriva I had to use mandriva one 2007.1, the others (Mandriva 2008 power DVD, Mandriva 2008 one) were installing but I was getting kernel panic all the time (despite noapic, nolapic, acpi=0). I installed on a usb external hard drive (western digital 120GB " elements"), it's not for newbies though, I had to tinker a bit, although I unfortunately don't remember everything. I am now installing updates via urpmi (easy-urpmi and update all) and will see if it still works. The 3D desktop works very well (compiz-fusion) as well as metisse but I hope to install and use xfce which should be lighter... :D :D :D
  15. Hi, I had been looking for a equivalent of cpu-z on Linux for some time, I think this perlmon is a good application : http://www.overclock.net/linux-unix-mac/21...gram-linux.html I have installed the version 0.1.3RC1 and it works well. It would be nice to pack it as an RPM, but I have no experience in this domain... Attached is a snapshot... I also tried the .deb package on my eee but no success there. Stef :D
  16. It seems pcLinux os are already in front of us! http://pclinuxoshwdb.com/eeepc/tiki-index.php
  17. Hi There is progress, I have managed to install mandriva 2007.1 on the eee pc from ASUS. I used the MCNL live toronto cd from boot, then installed it on a 2 GB pendrive and created a permanent loop. I then reboot with the option livecd persist and there t goes. Here isthe website for MCNL: www.mcnlive.org/usblive.htm And where I got the .iso for Toronto: ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/man...mcnlive/Toronto The 3d desktop works perfectly and with a very good resolution. I am trying to make the wifi and eth0 to work but so far no joy.I used ndiswrapper the following way : -Started drakconf and went in network management -Configure new connection/wireless/ndiswrapper -I pointed at the windows driver on the rescue cd which comes with the PC Then the configuration seems to work but after a few seconds I got an error message saying that some firmware can't be found. I would like to mention that MCNL people deserve a SPECIAL mention as so far I've tried a few live cd the eee and Toronto (apart for the network) gave me the best result, metisse is a blessing on sucha small factor. I use metisse on it, it give much more room to work, I only show my beryl install to advertise for linux... Stef
  18. Hi, I have had my eee pc ( http://eeepc.asus.com/global/ ) for a couple of days and I must say it is a great experience, just as exciting as when I changed from cds and vinyl to mp3! A lot of people are trying new distros on this model, mostly ubuntu. I would like to try a mandriva based distribution in order to keep our Mandy in the fast lane! Is there a good "how to" on how to create something similar to flash mandriva. Any ideas? Stef
  19. Hi, I am surprised that there are not more answers to Musting's query. Is there no way to sync a Nokia smartphone with Mandriva? I plug mine on the USB port (Nokia classic 6120) and it recognises it as a mass storage device but I'd love to be able to Sync it with KDE's Pim suite... Anyone??
  20. Hi, I bought this dongle a couple of months ago and it wouldn't work on Linux. I did not find any information on the net on how to set it up on Mandriva so here is the "how to" 1-Insert the drivers (Windoze) 2-Open drakconf ("configure your computer") 3-In Network and Internet ->Setup a new network interface 4-choose Wireless 5-Choose "use a Windoze driver" 6-Pick up the driver "netg125s.inf" from the mounted CD 7-The wizard will load the driver but show an error, firmware missing 8-Cancel the wizard 9-Under root copy rndismp.sys and usb8023.sys in /etc/ndiswrapper/netg125s/ 10-type ndiswrapper -m under root 11-It should now be working, otherwise rebbot and it worked for me! Speedwise I get 3MB/s on my network on ftp between the pc and my NAS (QNAP 109) and that is good for me, not sure how it compares with wired but I can't see a difference. The dongle is supposed to be "wireless-G 125 High speed USB 3 x the speed of standard of 802.11g, but I suppose I wouldn t know what that means... Stef :D [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  21. Excellent, It s a very good starter guide and I would recommend it to any Linux beginners who intend to use Mandriva. Thank you very much, added to my favourites! Stef
  22. Umm, very interresting that, I thing I read once about mondo, I need to dig a bit in that direction, I ll backup on my server and on a dvd just in case, thanks! Stef
