  1. With all this fuss over tyme's resignation, someone forgot to start a new thread.
  2. I have the same scanner, I have never got it working with any flavour of Linux.
  3. I think you are right there, I thought that mapi was meant to be an adjective of some sort.
  4. Am I to assume that by dismissing the discussion as "pointless" now, you have nothing to counter that arguement? Please translate the above word into English please.
  5. What is the underlying rationale of this common sense? Common sense could work in both ways, common sense could tell you that by joining an existing repo you could reach a larger audience quicker and easier but at a cost to individual reputation. Whereas on the flipside, common sense could also tell you that you could maintain independence, work harder and longer to obtain individual reputation and prestige. Autonomy and Pride can be motivators. By maintaining his independence he has full control to do what he wants, when he wants. He doesn't need to adhere to anyone elses agenda but his own. These values are known to motivate individuals, in fact they fit in with Maslow's "Self Esteem" need on his hierarchy of needs.
  6. Okay, maybe concern was the wrong choice of word. However you did cite the eventual arrival of 2008.1 as a reason not to use the 2008 powerpack DVD.
  7. John, while having the latest and greatest may be a concern for you, it is not necessarily a concern for others. I believe that for the O/P the desire to get the Lin DVD and Cedega packages is their priority, not (generally speaking) feature updates for core packages. IIRC you shouldn't be able to obtain LinDVD and Cedega through non-free.
  8. I'm pretty sure this is a non-issue to most, unlike compatibilty with Flash and Java :P
  9. Yup, it will be the right thing, which will probably annoy those that paid full price ;)

Yes John, there is a linux client, but what concerns me is that the O/P mentions a crack.
  11. AFAIK this is correct. Similarly if you are setting up repo's using the wizard in MCC it should ask you which version of hdlist you want to use for the repo's, re-iterating the same arguement as above.

I smell pirated software, feel free to correct me if I am wrong!
  13. Normally Ubuntu uses Grub with a bootscreen, what are the contents of /boot/grub/grub.conf?
  14. Why bother download the ISO, you already have mini installed, just install the packages you need, IIRC they are gnome-desktop and kde-desktop (or something similar).
  15. Is it February already, what happened to January?
  16. IIRC the profile picture that GDM uses is a hidden file called .face in your home directory, just find a picture, try copying it to the top level of the users home directory and renaming it .face
  17. I'd imagine that any headphones using a standard jack should work with any linux distro, the bottleneck will be the sound card, not the headphones. Expect answers based on individual taste and opinion, not compatibility as it is a non-issue.
  18. Ian, shouldn't HAL be picking up the drive. Similarly isn't Mandriva using the new libata, which means that all drives use the naming convention /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, etc irrespective of whether they are SATA/SCSI/ATAPI. For example, this is how my drives appear on my Fedora install: IDE 0-M 80G Maxtor HDD: /dev/sda IDE 0-S 80G Maxtor HDD: /dev/sdb S-ATA0 120G Maxtor HDD: /dev/sdc IDE 1-M Sony NEC CD Writer: /dev/sr0 IDE 1-S Asus DVD Writer: /dev/sr1
  19. So it was by default than, suppose that answers my question.
  20. According to this guy the BBC are effectively offering Microsoft illegal state aid: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/14/th...bc_iplayer_pac/
