  1. It's a good distro and I was never ashamed of using it, shame was never considered when I chose to dump it in favour of something else.

I think that the fact that Mandriva is based in France whereas RedHat, SUSE and so on are based in the US plus also the Majority of Linux news sites are in the US too is a big factor.

I suspect Mandriva is doing well in Europe where the Majority are non English speaking.

I'm not sure, in UK Ubuntu seems to be stealing the limelight, and that appears to be so across the continent (anyone from France, Gemany, etc care to chip in with their thoughts on this).

  2. Now ask yourself: How many people can administrate a Windows system? Very few can. Let two persons who are not technically savvy, who are just the "joe averave" install Windows and Linux, Solaris and OSX. Chances are pretty good that they will be unable to install ANY operating system. Do not pretend that Windows is easier to install. Most people simply forget that they get a computer with Windows preinstalled (and configured). If you'd get a Linux-system preinstalled (and configured) on a computer, then there would not be any "install-problem".

An argument often often ignored by Windows fanboys when bragging about how easy their OS is to use.

  3. Envy is a bad thing :D

Nothing wrong with an enthusiastic supporters. What worries me is the lack of enthusiastic supporters of other distros. We're talking about image/face to the outer world here, making known you're there. The Ubuntu community of artists, programmers, bloggers, musicians, writers etc. etc. are part of the success, they are giving the distro a face.

I'm an Ubuntu enthusiast, what do I like about computing? Gaming. What did I do? Making an Ubuntu Gaming Site and wrote a tons of installation guides aimed at Ubuntu and made a game list, which have now atm. 3000 hits everyday and estimating triple of hits when this year running out.

Create something for your distro that give it a face is my advise.

    Well said.

I think it is great that a distro like Ubuntu has been able to attract enthusiastic individuals like yourself, adding to what I believe to be an incredible marketing effort that continues to gain steam.

  4. Another release, another cheezy release announcement:

An ancient text prophesised this day would come, detailing the fate of all who are willing to accept what is offered to them:

    http://docs.fedoraproject.org/release-notes/f9/index.html

And that day has come: the Computer said "I will convert these unbelievers, and now that I have Sulphur it will be easy." At that, the heavens opened and burning Sulphur descended upon all the world, taking on many different forms.

Also, Livna have announced that their support for this release is now available

  5. As much as I have to give credit to someone for sticking their neck out and trying to port games to linux, is it really wise to be porting much older games and charging so much? I would have thought the real money, if any, would have been in porting relatively new games (i.e. released within the last year) to linux.

  6. That seems to disprove those who reckon that all mub users have drifted away from Mandriva, sounds pretty healthy to me.

I don't recall anyone saying that all MUB users have drifted away from Mandriva.

With such a small sample size (45), I would be a bit more reserved when making a judgement based on the results. I would be more inclined to say that the poll "indicates", rather than "proves". ;)

  7. In my opinion illia_kr makes a good point. Similarly the Mandriva club forum seems to have established itself as a place for support. Furthermore I think the bitching between members (apparently mods as well) is also a contributing factor, even worse is the double standards shown by some mods.

These are the things hurting MUB! Stop trying to make Mysti a scapegoat for trying to do something for herself, otherwise you are no better than a bunch of petty, squabbling children.

  8. :handbags: << sums up the tone of this thread!

Too much negativity, and not enough support. Call me condescending if you wish, bit I'm disappointed in the attitude some of you have adopted in this discussion.

  9. If I do not have missed something, you can achieve this by buying the PowerPack this time and upgrade it with the free version in six months, although I believe that this makes only sense with the .0 version and the following .1 version, i.e. 2008 -> 2008 Spring, 2009 -> 2009 Spring.

The point was made earlier in this thread, the O/P bought the slim box set, not the powerpack subscription. The later entitles you to the upgrade, the former does not.

  10. I believe that I have read your post thoroughly. If I had a problem with a company/organization/etc. that you worked for, I would not saybut something more like; your organization has been...

    Sound better?

No, as it was response to a statement about the company. Look at the quote, along with other posts (notice my exact words were "read my posts thoroughly") it is quite clear what the subject was, irrespective of my regional slang/misuse of language.

  11. so please show him the respect he deserves.

You really don't know me, do you! I have every respect for adamw, he does a good job, which I have mentioned many times before. I for one would not like to be in his shoes given the amount of crap I have seen him take from the community for things outside his control, but adam is up for the task and he just keeps going. Just because I criticise his statement, does not mean that I respect him any less!
