i ran a few searches and can't seem to find grub.conf. where would it be located?
Sorry I meant menu.lst (some distro's use menu.lst, some use grub.conf).
-
Looks like the installer/you did not add a grub entry for Vista.
Try adding the following to your grub.conf:
title Windows Vista rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1

Don't bother, there's no Pulse Audio configured and running in Mandy 2008.0
If that is the case, why bother having the libraries?
(the O/P's list of installed rpm's includes "libpulseaudio0-0.9.6-3mdv2008.0")
-
There should be a menu entry somewhere called pulsaudio control (or at least I hope so), it will bring up a dialogue that tells you what audio streams have been recognised.
-
Does your pulseaudio control recognise any streams when playing sound?

I don't know what this OpenJDK is, but were I you, I'd use either Sun JDK 1.6 or "IcedTea" 1.7.
Yves.
IIRC in some distro's OpenJDK is IcedTea

Ubuntu does have one thing different though. It's backed by a millionaire who even paid to go into space. Mandriva filed for bankruptcy, recovered with the help of investment from VC's and are climbing their way back up again.
Yes which is reflected in the strategy discussed by the O/P, it looks like the company has developed a risk neutral attitude as of late. Which might be enough to get them out of a rut, but it won't have them leading the market any time soon.
-
Were it my company, I wouldn't give the stuff away for nothing, either. Whatever you do, first of all you have to make sure that you do not go bancrupt. Point.
To be honest artic, if you actually ran a company you would realise that sometimes you may have to compromise your beliefs in order to make money. and if you can't you won't be in business much longer. It is possible to give something away and make a profit, any notion that you can't is pure ignorance.
-
I find expecting a company to provide - for free - something that costs them money to be out of order.
You might not agree with it, but it's something that happens a lot and works well in the business world.
-
Because buying, burning, and shipping a CD costs money - and Mandriva isn't backed by a millionaire (i.e. Ubuntu). Don't get me wrong, it's nice that Ubuntu gives out free CD's, but it's just that - nice. I don't expect Mandriva to go shelling out cash for something that won't provide them with any funds in return - it's a business, not a charity.
A lot of business do give things away, it's called advertising. It's quite a common and legitimate investment for companies that want to try and broaden their customer base. It can be risky, Mandriva seems to be trying to mitigate that risk by going against common practice and charging for the privilege of promoting (the mention of install parties to some degree implies promotion) their product. that kinda puts people off when they are already devoting their time and effort for free to promote the product.
Otherwise, shutup and stop being a freeloader.I find that remark to be rather aggressive and bang out of order.

I would be more inclined to change the the owner to the users regular account:
su -c "chown user -vR /home/quality.lock"
Replacing "user" with the O/P's username, then the user is able to browse the folder without needing to maintain root privileges.
-
it's his uuid, I took it from his ubuntu menu.lst
Apologies, I probably scrolled over that.
-
Removed, ffi pointed out that the info in his post was correct. My bad.
-
Could you please provide the contents of /boot/grub/grub.conf

As I recall, Kevin's tune *used* to be that Mandriva wouldn't survive because Linspire would beat it...
;)
Now now, there's no need to kick a man while he's down.

At least I'm hoping your referring to the Gnome ones, and not the Windows icons
Er, yeah
Thanks :D
-
this has been discussed before and the consensus is that mandriva the company might perish but while the distro serves its purpose and earns the loyalty of a few dedicated geeks then it will continue to survive in one form or another.
Very true.

My nice new CentOS 5.2 x86_64 desktop with Xen Virtualisation on the go, and, ahem, Windows XP :o
Nice Icon set, what are they?
-
The O/P noted that he needs the 32-bit Java, IIRC what you have posted would give him the 64-bit plugin?
-
What browser are you using?

The openoffice.org guide recommends the following steps:
Installation Steps- Unpack the downloaded image into a directory. For example, currently, the following command would unpack into the current directory:
- tar xvzf OOo_2.0.0_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz
- Su to root, if necessary.
- cd into the directory with the unpacked image. This could be RPMS.
- Delete any rpm files that do not apply to your system. For example, on a Fedora Core 3 system, delete any rpms specific to another distribution such as openofficeorg-suse-menus-1.9.79-1.noarch.rpm.
- Then execute rpm -Uvih *rpm.
The same should apply for Oxygen Office
- Unpack the downloaded image into a directory. For example, currently, the following command would unpack into the current directory:

Did you ever have sound in the first place (for flash). Make sure you have the i586 (i think) libraries installed for your sound server (IIRC this is pulse audio on Mandriva 2008.1)

I guess I recognize it easier because I had years of involvement in politics where I saw such sleaze and cronyism all around me. It sickened me so much that I withdrew from all political activity after about 12 years. Especially around a certain Prime Minister whose name started with W. I like to think that I have lost my naivety in that regard at least.
John.
John, may I hazard a guess that you experience is of the Australian politics? The story is concerning the British Public Sector, which I have worked in and have relations who work in senior positions. Here, so called political sleaze is not as much of a problem as the media like to make us think.
-
AussieJohn,
There are no credible evidence to support the "sleaze" claim, IMO.

Tried it a while back, didn't think much of it.
IIRC it's just firefox with several social networking plugins installed by default.
