  1. As I've heard MDV has problems with Yukon hardware

That's only with the netinstall as sk98lin is not available in the minimal boot iso. It should be on the download iso's (everyone else does). Just make sure that mandriva uses sk98lin and not skge (the open source driver) as it can't handle 2nd generation yukon cards!

  2. In reality it's x% donation to GNU Linux, and (100-x)% for a commercial product with all the bells and whistles attached!

I don't agree. Aren't some Mandriva employees contributing to free software? See for instance linuxprinting.org

Erm, I didn't say that they didn't contribute, what I was saying was what they plough back into GNU Linux in financial terms is nothing compared to what you paid, there is a profit element after all, and Mandriva's own costs to cover (it is afterall a profit making corporation)

Mandriva killed that notion in the way that is advertises the club benefits, and the fact that you sign up to a commercial contract for a fixed period of time.

Here you have a point. I really think Mandriva should stop advertising the club benefits.

IMHO there's only one benefit: the early access to the ISOs. Besides I'm sure most club members didn't join to gain these so called benefits.

Mandriva would be better off simply saying "download the distro and if you like it join our club --or our developpers/testers tream-- to show your appreciation".

That wont work, and hasn't in the past a far as Mandriva is concerned! You need to motivate people to give their money, and the best way is to sell a product that they want!

  3. It is a shame, but some admins and/or it-techies still claim that IE is a marvelous browser and will tell everyone so. Those people should be fired imho. Plain dumb guys.

Probably to do with the way training of these individuals today, I wouldn't go so far as to suggest brainwashing, but many courses will feature M$, but little knowledge is shared with regards to alternatives. It is indeed a shame that this is the way things are, we can only hope that things change in due course (i.e. end users have, and are not afraid of choice)!

  4. I believe you might find this interesting:

What you are hearing is typical M$ bull**** propoganda, developed because Microsoft wants to be the authority in every case! M$'s strong market position is what influences the narrowminded views of the few, i.e "IE is the most secure web browser around and we only support its use", which is just bull as they should be acknowledging the standards of the open organisation, who's creator founded what we call the world wide web today! But like always, M$ wants you to do what it wants you to do, rather than let you do what you want to do without satisfying its desire to control you!

  5. I know that Optus and other ISPs in Australia are doing mirroring of LINUX software but I do not know if the downloads are free from the download count. Remember Telstra Bigpond is the ISP and not just a mirror site.

    John,

AFAIK, my ISP here in the UK (Telewest/Blueyonder) has mirrors for Debian and Gentoo, they are the only ones I know of though!

  6. I'm absolutely not defending them, but you have to look at club membership more as a donation to the GNU/linux community, then you won't feel so bad about poor service.

How can you believe that? Mandriva killed that notion in the way that is advertises the club benefits, and the fact that you sign up to a commercial contract for a fixed period of time. In reality it's x% donation to GNU Linux, and (100-x)% for a commercial product with all the bells and whistles attached!

  7. Gael Duval was recently interviewed in Linuxformat.uk i dont have that interview but found this FAQ.

    http://www.indidea.org/gael/en/gael-answers.php

The interview was commented before, I think one of the guys had a copy???? (once upon a time I did buy it, but that didn't last long!!!)

As for the FAQ, it's a pitiful response to Mark Shuttleworths (ubuntu) FAQ. I'm sorry, but this was one band wagon Gael should have left alone, as it just looks like he's trying to keep up with the Mikesies!

  8. What is their latest plan for marketing Mandriva? How are they measuring the success of their current plan?

I gotta agree with that one, oh and here's mine:

Are you aware of the concern (especially within the club) with regards to communication, and if so how do you plan to facilitate better communication with the club and wider mandriva community, that is, if you intend on addressing the issue?

  9. Last I heard, it was meant to be early November, there's still no date available at qa.mandriva.com! Although they are taking a good bruising from the club members at the moment over a few major bugs, only one of which you will get a work around from the Errata, the other two you need forums like this to get answers for! Maybe, and just maybe they are actually listening to the club and postponing the release until at least the Xorg bugs are killed, maybe, just maybe!

  10. "sk98lin" driver included in the current kernel is broken (I know it, because I do have the very same card on my laptop).

Is it, worked fine for me on 2006 before I switched to the nforce ethernet controller (I have a dual LAN). Might also be worth trying skge if it is there, this is the opensource version of sk98lin, however it doesn't work well with 2nd Generation Marvell Yukon cards, or the 1.3 revision either (which I have).

  11. Mandriva has no respect for private individual customers and they're left to their own fate which is a potential misery.

Like I said in my previous post, if they keep wiping the backsides of the corporate customer, then they will keep them alive, well until Mandriva know that the they no lomger have club members and Joe Public to act as guinea pigs, so yes, I guess failure is an option here!

    ;)

  12. I'm sorry to say, but i'm not surprised, not in the slightest! Mandriva have some serious issues with regard to private sales, it appears that the don't care, or as I believe, they have bitten off more than they can chew! Customer relations inside and outside the club are poor, but they survive because they keep the corporate customers happy (from what I can see, it's these guys that are keeping Mandriva alive at the moment!!)

Here's a tip that usally works, ask for your money back, serious, they seem to jump thorugh hoops when people threaten to stop credit card payments or demand their money back on the basis of "non-performance of contract".

I sympathise with you ma man, might be worth finding out who has a copy of the cd's you need and getting a copy and use the product key you got from Mandriva???

    Cheers
