  1. IIRC, there was a time when Gentoo was considered unstable. but I believe they are working towards removing that stigma. Like paul demonstrated, an uptime 200 days, looks pretty stable enough to me! I reckon, at least with the major players, that stability lives in the shadow of preferences. IMHO
  2. As a fairly n00b-ish Gentoo user, I have no option but to use the command line at is doesn't have all the graphical tools that Mandriva uses. but this doesn't bother me in the slightest, i'm enjoying the learning curve, giving me a sorely needed challenge......although I gotta admit some relief when the emerge of x and gnome had finished ;)
  3. Something to do with new-ish graphics adapters......
  4. I think you have kinda missed the point on that one. The open-source and ati drivers worked before, the issue was that Mandriva uses a development version of Xorg which they pulled from the CVS. If the used a stable version of Xorg, it is sensible to suggest that the nvidia and ati drivers would not be an issue. Ergo, blame Mandriva, they packaged a development xorg to keep intel happy (i'm sure there is a business arrangement between the two.....) And to be quite frank, installing ati and nvidia's closed source drivers is a doddle, just takes a little patience and about 5 mins of your time............ B)
  5. Had some snow here last week, quite heavy in the morning, gone by the afternoon :( . The photo was taken last March from the balcony of my old flat, nice to get a good pic like that when everything's all white.......
  6. Three posts down and not a desktop in sight  Oh well, let me begin (in the xmas spirit): (Still playing around with Gentoo....)
  7. My point was, who actually cares about exchange, a microsoft product, when you can use pop3 and IMAP, which are not microsoft products?
  8. That point alone kinda makes you wonder what planet this guy is on.....
  9. Me, at 24, well technically, I have only been using it for 6 months. It was just out of interest really, but then again look at what curiosity did to the cat....... Started off with Mandriva, still use it as my main distro while I get to grips with gentoo, well when I say get to grips, I kinda won half the battle, the ultimate goal is to know enough about what I am doing with it to be confident using it 24/7!
  10. Which video driver are you using. Have you tried using the bog-standard vesa driver?
  11. The reason behind the developmentl Xorg was to support the new intel graphics chips that are creeping into new laptops.
  12. That is your opinion, about a choice that is right for you, however as the following states, that a group of 300 people indicated an overall preference for gnome, the majority of which probably never heard of linux up until now. But at the end of the day, it's not about what DE is better for converting people, or accommodating noobs, its really about giving the users a set of tools to get the job done. Like I say there's nothing wrong with KDE, yes its just as good, it just came down to preference.
  13. Yip, k3b is essentially a front-end, it's tools like cdrecord and growisofs that do the hard work, k3b just prepares the tools.
  14. Nautilus is easly tweaked (not sure why this isn'nt set as a default though). run gconf-editor, then I think its in apps>nautilus, and tick the browser option. it will then behave just like konqueror did. ;)
  15. It is what the people preffered, each to their own! It's good to see this happening. There was some coverage over the office of Deputy PM regards to investing research into open source a while back. Good to see that this is something they are serious about, and I do hope it goes well. The less the UK government is dependent on Microsoft, the more likely it will introduce measures to loosen Microsofts grip on the software market.
  16. This has been noted in the erratta you will find the solution here: http://qa.mandriva.com/twiki/bin/view/Main...la_based_softwa
  17. Run the install again and try using the vesa driver, not ati, that should at least get you into a GUI on your next boot. then read up on compiling drivers......
  18. Hmmm, I doub't anyone would be sick enough to give Larry male genetalia, unless there is a www.gnome-look.xxx out there :D
  19. As far as I know, he's meant to be a male, and anyway he's a cartoon! Always somebody trying to be smart
  20. Nothing special (but you gotta love larry the cow though!) Full size
  21. This might seem silly but, have you tried /etc/X11/xorg.conf? As the X11 folder is named X11 and not x11, which may explain why you are getting the new file?
  22. Good to see another person agree's with me, I was beginning to feel lonely on this one! Me three!
  23. Who knows, some of the club is up in arms about the whole thing, its not good PR, and its not good for GNU linix and general (as far as I can see, most noobs are drawn to Mandriva as their first distro, I know I was). Although it does give an additional motive for people to join the club, maybe that's what they want to trap them into the 12 month contract after you have parted with your money, only to find out that the club membership really ain't worth all that money!!! I have even seen Adam Williamson (the club forum administrator) remark that if the choice was his, certain items would not have appeared in that release!
  24. In a nutshell, the opensource nvidia and ati drivers are borked, and there have been instances of X creating 100% cpu load (although this appears to only happen at 4 in the monring, something to do with logrotate!) You must at least select the vesa driver if your machine has an nvidia or ati graphics card (although I don't believe that the problem is quite so severe with ati, don't know personally as I use nvidia cards). Otherwise X will not start (alternatively you could get the nvidia driver from nvidia before installing, and run it immediately after install, but make sure your kernel source is installed first).
