    Chip upgrade

Hi Ixthusdan, Thanks for the offer. Its old and weedy and not worth putting a 2 bit CPU upgrade in, I agree. Its obvious I know squat about this kind of thing but all I want is some useful information about it, which you have been kind enough to publish. I've learned a lot about what I am trying to do in the last hour both here and on the Dell site, which are both very active. I have had to justify myself in the face of some real astonishment at my perseverence with what has been a worthy computer that in all fairness should be bound for a skip :D. That said, I am still interested in what you said about the combo upgrade and would be interested in any other information you may have about it. Model number? Where would that be. Below is what Dell have about the machine. Its a desktop. Do I need to take off the side? Dimension XPS D___ P2,233,KLAMATH Service Tag: MT7CY Service Code: 38314114 Ship Date: 19/3/1998 Thanks again Pat

    Chip upgrade

Hi All, I have a Dell Dimension XPS D233 with Mandrake 2005 LE on it. I want to upgrade the motheboard or chip (very weedy!!) as I've basically upgraded everything else. I put this on the DELL support site and a very helpful user suggested I try not to upgrade the motherboard as it may be very hard and to save up for a new box or, alternatively, try the following: The Evergreen Technologies Performa SE 533MHz upgrade http://www.evertech.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...&category_id=22 This seems very sensible to me. Has anyone any experience of this upgrade with Mandrake. As its a hardware upgrade, will it or should it be transparent to it? Thanks again for all your support Pat
  3. Thanks for the info, Augustus. I want to eventually host my own website and want to host .NET webservices/webapps and .NET ASPs and EJBs/JSPs (just as a technical excercise). I guess I should try to source some free webservers/appservers to host these. Any recommendations about which are best and how to make them secure? Thanks again
  4. Hi All, Thanks for all your help with my networking stuff before. I have at last got my wireless n/w up and running and secure and have just tonight connected my mandrake box (wired ethernet) to the internet. I have 2 other windows boxes connected to the n/w but they are switched off at the moment while I make sure the firewall is set up ok. I am unsure about the firewall configuration as I am new to this and need a little help with it. I have mandriva 2005 SE installed and have the following message n the security log: 2:11:41 drakfirewall[1007]: running: /bin/rpm -q --qf %{name} apache apache-mod_perl boa bind openssh-server ftp-server-krb5 wu-ftpd proftpd pure-ftpd sendmail postfix qmail imap courier-imap-pop telnet-server-krb5 samba-server cups bittorrent bittorrent-shadowsclient Can anyone tell mewhat it means?. Also for the first 10 or 15 minutes I was attached to the internet I had the following items allowed to be connected to by the internet in the firewall configuration: Web Server DNS SSH FTP Ping I kind of thought this was a bad thing so I have switched them all off now except Ping. otherwise the firewall has its default settings. While I want to continue to access the internet I also want to make my n/w is as secure as possible. Any best practise tips I can implement? My router also has a firewall with default settings on too. Thanks Pat
  5. Hi All, I am looking for a little help. I have tried to install the downloadable X-Lite SIP softphone on Mandrake SE 2005 and when, after installation, I start it up, it looks for libstdc++.5.0.so, if I remember the library name correctly. libstdc++.6.0.so seems to be already installed. Is there a graceful way I can get past this? Thanks Pat
  6. Thanks for the reply spinynorman, Another quick question, which may sound a tad silly but I'll persist nonetheless. It looks like I need access to the internet from the box I want to install it on. Is this the case? Do contrib and plf (Is the free one OK to use for VLC?) require much disk space? Thanks in advance again Pat
  7. Hi All, I am quite new here and have a Dell Dimension XPS D233. Its an old box now running Mandriva 10.2 (2005) LE. I have bought an ethernet card but its not arrived yet and I want to install VLC and at: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ I get the following instructions to install it on Mandrake. Is urpmi a utility that comes with the Mandriva installation or do I need to download and install it? Is it optional on the install? What are contrib and plf? Are they on the install too? I have alternative access to the internet. To install the latest VLC packages, add the following sources for either Mandrake 9.1, 9.2 or Cooker (you can use Easy urpmi for that): contrib from the core distribution; plf (Penguin Liberation Front) from the external add-ons. Then install the required packages with urpmi: # urpmi libdvdcss2 libdvdplay0 wxvlc vlc-plugin-a52 vlc-plugin-ogg vlc-plugin-mad Thanks again in advance Pat
  8. Hi Grant, I did the same myself before I posted and got the same results. Had a look at one or two and they looked old but I figured the older the device the more likely it is to have drivers pre-installed. Still thought I'd ask the question though and thanks again for the helpful and prompt reply. Pat
  9. Thanks again for the reply. Thank for the info about mcc I have another question. I have sourced an internal wired ethernet card that will fit in the Dell Dimension XPS D233 I have. Its an old card for an old box now running Mandriva 10.2 (2005) LE. I spoke with Dell who said it was a 3Com Boomerang 3c905 PCI 10/100 XT only network card. They still stock them, but before I cough up for it, where can I find if there are any known issues with it, with respect to 10.2? Is it likely there is a driver for it on the install? How can I find out? Is it likely to auto-detect when I stick in the card? Thanks in advance again Pat
  10. Hi again Grant, I downloaded the 3 i586 ISO images for 10.2 LE and it installed fairly gracefully, although I had to change the resolution in /etc/X11/Xorg.conf (I think!) as it didnt like 1280x1024. I now have a KDE running. How can I find out what packages I installed as I can't remember?. Can I pick and choose to install extra stuff now from the CDs? Also I see photoworks on this board upgraded to 10.2 and now his network cards aren't recognised anymore. Is this a known issue? https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=25133 I think I'll get a Belkin N/W 10Base-T , 100Base-Tx PCI card which I hope will fit in my machine. Tanks again Pat
  11. Thanks again Grant, I trawled around for 10.1 Powerpack but its more than a couple of quid. Good suggestion to download Mandrvia 2005 LE. Will certainly try this first. I have but a 4 Gig disk, will this be an issue. Will any wired ethernet card do or is Linux at all picky? Pat
  12. Hi Grant, Thanks for the reply. What I had in mind was a USB wireless ethernet card. If you had said it was likely to be very easy to set up then I'd probably go ahead with it but I feel sure a wired ethernet card would do the same job with less configuration. Once I get it running I may have a look at wireless again in the future. I would like to host a website on the box that I can host EJBs on. Just as an excercise. Is there a webserver packaged with PowerPack+ (version 10.1 Expert) (suggested by another poster on this thread) and a Java development environment? Will my lamentably slow and weedy 233 Mhz chip be up to hosting this? Will I need to set some kernel parameters during the install and are they well documented? Thanks for the help again
  13. Hi Gentlemen and Ladies, I am about to part with some cash (a couple of quid) to buy Linux CDs and install it on my Dell Dimension XPS D233 desktop. I have oodles of memory and a 4G disc. I have sourced a wireless router (SpeedTouch 716g) to network my new Dell Dimension 3000 and laptop and have been informed that Mandrake should be the Linux version I use because of its ease of installation. What is its support for USB devices like? What is its support for wireless technology like? If a wireless device is too hard to install/configure on the best version of Mandrake for my machine, what kind of a wired ethernet card can I put in it or will any do? Has my Dell Dimension XPS D233 machine enough grunt to run a server version of Mandrake? What is the best version for me to install to achieve this? Thanks in advance
