Scheme is a language i had some fun learning, very different from the common ones like C or Java.
If you want to learn the programming basics - try Pascal or a more modern C. Java can be a little confusing for a beginner.
You can try googling for some online C trainers (i know there are plenty of them out there...)
Personally, i prefer to learn with a good book, i don't like learning from a screen.
Enjoy.

Less configurable? How is that?
I didn't try KDE myself, just heard people talking. Did you read the article i linked to earlier? It may contain some answers.
-
If KDE4 is going to be the new Gnome, I'm pretty sure I'll use it :D
It sounds like KDE is heading in that direction. Some say that KDE 4 is less configurable and less flexible that 3.5. but it will be easier to modify its visual appearance (theming).
-
KDE 4 isn't final yet, it is natural that it has all that bugs and glitches. KDE's development team promises that when they finish KDE will be more stable, flexible and more usable. I hope so. Meanwhile they postponed the release date to January 11 2008.
And here is an interesting post i've found: http://liquidat.wordpress.com/2007/11/30/k...sign-decisions/

Well, i checked that, and my options are: 1. install a devel kernel (2.6.23) 2. multimedia devel 3. the same kernel i use with 4gb RAM, which i don't have 3. many others
In other words - i'm lost here...
-
googling indicates that this may be a kernel bug...have you tried it with one of the other kernels available for 2008?
No, how should i do that?

Hi there, i have a major problem.
I've installed 2008 One Gnome version and it too doesn't automount any of my usb devices. I encountered the same problem on every Linux distro that uses kernel version 2.6.20 and above, namely Ubuntu 7.04/7.10, Fedora 7/8, Suse 10.3.
These devices work well on older kernels like in Debian 4.0, MDV 2007.1 and PCLinuxOS 2007.
I really need a USB support, please help!
The same problem on Kubuntu.

Are these screenlets compiz related or ordinary gdesklets?
-
I guess this isn't the default Mint look?

If you want to change "localhost" to something else, you have change your PC's host name in mcc, don't remember where exactly (i don't use mandriva), but it should be somewhere in network>>alter misc' network options.
P.S. I use a LAN connection so that might not work for you
here how it looks in PCLinuxOS:
-
you should install "kdewebdev" package it includes qanta
-
Had the same on 2007.1 look here

Personally i don't think MS did something wrong, they just do their business (as usual)... and the government is going to pay so everything looks legible. I think the author is pissed off on Microsoft just because it is Microsoft.

Dear Steve,
Hi, this is François, from Mandriva.
I’m sure we’re way too small for you to know me. You know, we’re one of these tiny Linux company working hard for our place on the market. We produce a Linux Distro, Mandriva Linux. The last edition, Mandriva 2008 was seen as a pretty good version and we’re proud of it. You should give it a spin, I’m sure you’d like it. We also happen to be one of the Linux companies that did not sign an agreement with your company (nobody’s perfect)...
-
You can also install a C compiler by typing "urpmi gcc" as root in a konsole and if you need more search for term "gcc" or "compiler" in MCC software install section, as SilverSurfer60 proposed.

Also, what is the right way to install KDE on debian?
P.S. If you can post links to good Debian sites for newbies it would be great...

Regarding updates: the current update entry in my sources.list begins with security.debyan and contains "etch/updates" string. What does it mean?
Can i apply that string to any mirror and thus it'll be my upgrade source?
-
I agree with Ian. I would 'not' recommend mixing them... I would suggest using the backports for more up to date packages.
Thanks for that!
-
Can i chose a different update mirror ?
-
Can i mix Sid packages with stabe ones? I mean, if i want to install the newest version of certain program, can i install it from sid mirror?
-
Haven't. I guess you referred to Octave, or am I wrong? What is the benefit?
Sorry, i meant Matlab. I wander if i can run it smoothly on my linux desktop on wine. See, i need it for my study and the reason i want it to be 100% compatible is because everyone (my fellow students) use it and thus we'll be able to share some scripts. The university lab also uses matlab on XP PCs and i need my scripts to work on it.
PCLinuxOS - A new Mandi?
in Everything Linux
Posted
I use PCLinuxOS and find it more stable (the KDE version) than Mandriva. It is a rolling distro, so i can upgrade to the latest version without the need to download any new ISO image. Its KDE works better for me and lacks some annoying bugs i found in Mandriva's (maybe the QA process is better). PCLos uses apt-get, some claim that it is way better that urpmi, i don't know for sure why.
The biggest disadvantage of PClos is its small repository, although it contains everything I need (except for some math apps like octave).
