  1. Is that AVN at the bottom? How do you start it from KDE?
  2. The only thing that isn't working is a USB support, the rest is fine, so it is quiet capable system, updated also. I just don't use. but i might some day.
  3. So you gave up? Why? Why do you care so much about what people say? If you want to create that forum than go for it. If someone doesn't want to use it he won't. From my experience only 5 or 6 people on MUB actually do help others, the rest, including me, come here to chat or don't have enough knowledge to help. Most don't even use Mandriva and have forgotten all they knew about it, like myself. I think that your idea for forum that isn't distro specific is a great one and i don't see how it will harm MUB. Sorry for a harsh tone...
  4. I usually use PCLinuxOS, sometimes WinXP and i also have Mandriva 2008 installed, but it doesn't work (some old hardware issues with a new kernel).
  5. You can give away free staff to attract visitors, like free beers.. Now seriously: you can have a student portal. There is a lot of software available that students can use (i mean school and higher) but people just don't know about it. Example: free C/C++ compilers, K3dsurf, Kplot, octave, gnuplot and other. I'm still learning how to use all this stuff for my needs, and it would be great if i had someone to chat about this.
  6. You can also add a new software review section, software news or something of a similar kind.
  7. I have Gnome installed and it is very buggy, yet working. It stalled my PC several times so i didn't persist and switched back to KDE. Maybe it misbehaves only on my comp, but still based on my experience i wouldn't recommend it.
  8. +1 for that In general i find Mandriva far better than Ubuntu in terms of speed and hardware support. It is a very good distro, despite some annoying bugs in KDE (which i had used the most). PCLinuxOS is what i have now. It is a rolling distro, very well polished, pretty stable and it is a mandriva fork, so it has its mcc and hardware support capabilities. But if you are a gnommer - stay away from PCLinuxOS, go for Mandy instead.
  9. I frequently have to type in Russian having no suitable keyboard. Gnome apps allow me to use transliteration, while i can't find the same feature in KDE's apps. Does KDE support some sort of transliteration or i have to use Gnome apps for that? Here how i do this in Pidgin for example:
  10. Learning Octave basics, guess which distro i'm using: answer - PCLinuxOS
  11. Can you still mount them manually bu "mount -t ..." ?
  12. Can you post your smb.conf here? Maybe that'll give us some clues.
  13. It seems like Octave and kOctave are pretty good for me, so i'll stick to them.
  14. No newer kernels worked for me, so i've filed a bug report. Hope one day it will be fixed. Thanks...
  15. Another experiment with KDE theming, Gnomish look. style: Domino icons: BC Tango 0.6 (from kde-look.org)
  16. The gnome is a community release (as a quote says) and i have it installed on my pc. I didn't try a gnome ISO though but i think that it is the same gnome as you can get from PCLos' repository (which i have). I usually use KDE but i gave gnome a try for a week or so and haven't noticed any glitches, i think it is ok.
  17. Yes, i liked Netscape. It was my first ever browser and i've created my first web-page in Netscape's Composer. Now it is a history...
  18. AOL's focus on transitioning to an ad-supported web business leaves little room for the size of investment needed to get the Netscape browser to a point many of its fans expect it to be. Given AOL's current business focus and the success the Mozilla Foundation has had in developing critically-acclaimed products, we feel it's the right time to end development of Netscape branded browsers, hand the reins fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users to adopt Firefox. http://blog.netscape.com/
  19. It has a full Gnome desktop, regularly updated, so i guess the saying "kde-centric" is a little bit outdated. https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?s=&...st&p=346614
  20. PCLos has a 2.20.1.1 version of gnome now and it works fine as far as i see...
