  2. Hi there, I use openSUSE 11.0 and recently I've tried to set up compiz. The problem is that when i turn on desktop effects window borders disappear completely. How can I solve this? Thanks
  3. I've been a KDE user for long time, until two weeks ago I installed openSUSE with Gnome. I agree with scarecrow that KDE 3.5.10 is superb in terms of configurability and usability and I usually prefer KDE over Gnome and others. So why did I chose Gnome this time? For several reasons. First - Gnome is prettier and always had been. Second - KDE is in a transitional mode right now, I'm not sure how many resources are transfered to its development and maintaining while KDE4 isn't ready yet. Finally - curiosity. I'm satisfied so far.
  4. Cool, there is a GRUB installer for Windows. I'm eager to see your how-to... Thanks again
  5. Thanks, man. Is Linux installed now on your laptop? Because in my case the lappy has only WinXP and no GRUB whatsoever.
  6. Is it possible to install a bootlosder on some other computer so it will work on a laptop too?
  7. Hi there, A friend of mine has an old netbook that doesn't have any CD/DVD-rom or floppy. It has USB 1.1 and a BIOS that doesn't allow booting from USB or network (not sure about the latter though). He wants to install Linux, because WinXP feels kind of a slow on it but the question is how. We (he) need your help here. Please post any ideas, personal experience and everything relevant. P.S. We don't want to install Debian or Ubuntu by using their windows installers. Thanks... P.P.S. This post is double posted at distrostop.org here. [moved from Hardware by spinynorman]
  8. Ok, thanks, I'll try what you said, Paul.
  9. Chill out, guys. I've done it, thanks. And yes, i don't afraid of CLI, yet GUI is fine too. By the way, who changed the caption of the post to "solved"? I said "thanks" because I understood what Ian and Adam said, not because tried it and it worked! Actually, I fixed the issue only after this post ! :)
  10. After updating Mandriva 2008.1 I have these boot options in grub: title linux kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux root=UUID=78e4d88e-adba-44e8-a08f-18e818d6bae5 resume=/dev/hda8 splash=silent vga=788 initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd.img title desktop586 2.6.24.4-1mnb kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24.4-desktop586-1mnb BOOT_IMAGE=desktop586_2.6.24.4-1mnb root=UUID=78e4d88e-adba-44e8-a08f-18e818d6bae5 resume=/dev/hda8 splash=silent vga=788 initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd-2.6.24.4-desktop586-1mnb.img title desktop586 2.6.24.5-2mnb kernel (hd0,5)/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24.5-desktop586-2mnb BOOT_IMAGE=desktop586_2.6.24.5-2mnb root=UUID=78e4d88e-adba-44e8-a08f-18e818d6bae5 resume=/dev/hda8 splash=silent vga=788 initrd (hd0,5)/boot/initrd-2.6.24.5-desktop586-2mnb.img What is mnb kernel and what option should I use ? Thanks. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  11. In KDE I used to assign a keyboard shortcuts to some frequently used apps. For example, I used Crtl+d to start a dictionary and so on. How can I do this in Gnome?
  12. I remember I've seen a similar topic here but sadly I couldn't find it. So, how can I change "localhost" at terminal (in Gnome) to something else? In Mandriva 2007.1 I could do it in MCC network configuration but I can't find it in 2008.1. Thanks.
  13. Mandriva is still one of my favorite distros. Yes it has some flaws but it also has many advantages. I always recommend it to new Linux users (along with PCLinuxOS). One thing i'm particularly proud of: filed a bug few weeks ago (2-3, can't remember) and the guys from bugzilla (Adam Wilson) contacted me yesterday about some additional information about it. Never happened to me. Good job! I wish they improved their pre-relies QA though. I was never ashamed in using Mandiva, because my friends don't even know what Linux is, so I'm kind of a Linux freak
  14. Hi, I use KDE and would like to change the default gnome theme used in gnome apps instead of that La-Ora one. How can I do that? The only way I can think of is by installing a gtk-qt engine. Is there a simpler way? Thanks.
  15. What repos did you add? Can you give me some links?
  16. Forgot to say: I was never able to configure all my media keys while using KDE. For some reason Gnome picked them up easily. I don't know why. Have you tried to your keyboard in gnome?
  17. Slightly off topic, but what repos do you use for PCLos updates? I was never asked to update the kernel, so i'm still using the old 2.6.18 .
  18. I know its a wrong place, but i use PCLos, and avant isn't on any of my menus. I checked at "/usr/bin" and found the "awn-manager" script but it gives me errors while trying to run and nothing happens. Going now to PCLos forum for a quire...
