  1. ]I really appreciate all the feedback. Here is what I have on order. The modem is (1x Best Data 56k V.92 Data/Fax Ext. Serial Modem 56SX-92). It is definitely not a winmodem. Any ideas if I am on the right track with this modem? Also, in my BIOS, where do I go in order to disable the winmodem? Should I wait until AFTER I install the external modem, drivers, etc. before disabling the winmodem? Thanks Kindly, Bob
  2. Greetings! I think that you have all heard from me before about this same problem. After 2 weeks, I am still unable to connect to the internet with Mandriva 10.1. I figure that it is a problem with my modem, Conexant D850 56k V.9xDFVc (a winmodem). I have on order an external serial connected modem which I hope may solve my problem. Am I just out of luck? I don't want to give up on Linux, I want to get rid of XP. I am able to get into the KDE Desktop with no problem, but after checking all the hardware, Linux is kindly having no problems with all my hardware, EXCEPT THE MODEM. Am I on the right track with the external serial modem? If so, after I receive it, do I have to somehow disconnect internally the winmodem before installing the external modem? This is all new to me and I would appreciate any help from anyone out there. Kind Regards, Bob [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  3. :D So, I guess with XP Home I am basically screwed?...as far as updates, that is. Updating all the USB & driver issues I will try, I guess that I need to go to <microcost.com>. Just a footnote, may be interesting background....I lived in the Pacific NW for 24 years and witnessed the Microsoft empire build up in Redmond, WA. Don't want to go into any detail other than I have had issues with people that only use Windows. I feel rather stupid after having 2 computers in the past that ran Red Hat. Granted, I was a newbie, and still am. I will assure you that I don't know "jack" about Mandriva. I would appreciate it if you would stay in touch. :D I will let you know my progress. At this point I am not that concerned about the printer, I will cross that bridge when I get there. My main concern is establishing an internet connection with Mandriva. Bob
  4. I have been here before, but I want to give everyone a rundown on my Dell (ugh!) system as I am having difficulties using a dual-boot O/S system with Windows XP and Mandrake 10.1. System: Dell Dimension 2400 Series, Intel Pentium 4 CPU @2.660 GHz 256MB DDR SDRAM @333MHz Integrated Intel 3D AGP Graphics A940 Dell Inkjet Printer (Port USB B001) 80GB 7200 RPM Ultra ATA Hard Drive No floppy drive Windows XP Home Edition w/SP-2 installed Integrated 10/100 Ethernet 56K PCI Data Fax Modem Conexant D850 56k V.9xDFVc (port Com 3) Artec DVD+/-RW 12x internal Last night I spent 2 hours on the phone with someone at Dell who was unable to help me. My problems are as listed: 1.) I am unable to connect to the internet using a KDE desktop with Mandrake 10.1 I have gone through all the searches for my modem but have found none that matches the above listed modem. I have run a search for kppp and have come up empty. 2.) I am unable since I have installed Mandrake 10.1 to use my Dell printer on the Windows platform. I have uninstalled the printer, reinstalled the drivers and get an error message from Windows stating that this is not a Windows 32 application. I think that there is a definite O/S conflict here. I have tried all 6 USB ports on my tower and have received the same error message. However, this is a LINUX board, but I think that giving this information could possibly enable someone out there to figure out this problem. 3.) I can use Windows for all internet and email applications. Unfortunately, I am unable to use Linux for any and all of the above. I hope that giving a complete rundown of my system will enable some person to give me some valuable help. Dell would have given me some help, but they wanted to charge me with no guarantees. I did pass on their "offer" of assistance. Regards, Bob
  5. OK, I did everything that you suggested. The problem was is that there was no listing for "hsfmodem" I really thought that I had something going there Then I tried a search for "kdenetwork-kppp" and again, nothing Hey, I am not going to give up, because I feel that I am this close to solving this problem thanks to you and all the other members who have taken their valuable time to help me Any other suggestions or help would be very kindly appreciated. I know that I am going to work this out. A big kudos to you for your help!!!!!! Bob
  6. Sir, I definitely want to give you your props because you are talking way over my head. At this point, as a newbie I have to frankly be "babysat" so to speak. However, I am very bent on getting Linux working and getting rid of Windows. My modem is a Winmodem, that I have figured out. I did unzip a driver from Dell that another member gave me, but Windows told me that it was unable to open the file because it is not a Win32 program. I then attempted to try another angle from another member's advice and go into the Mandrake Control Center, Go to Software Management/Install, change search from Mandrake packages to ALL packages and then search for "hsfmodem". I thought that I had something going but there was nothing with "hsfmodem" listed. Bummer! Then I did a search for "kdenetwork-kppp" and again, nothing. However, I am not quitting I have gone too far to give up. Any additional advice would be appreciated. Bob
  7. Snapback, I think that I am going with your suggestion for an external serial connected modem. Can you suggest one that is compatible with Mandriva 10.1? Also would I have to disconnect the Winmodem before I installed the external modem? I unzipped the Dell driver download but Windows told me that it is not a Win32 application so I was unable to open it. Windows really sux! Another problem that I have experienced is since I have installed Mandriva 10.1, now Win XP does not recognize my printer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the connection cables and still I am unable to print out a test page. Any suggestions about this problem? I am fully bent on getting this Linux issue solved and quit using Windows altogether. Any help or suggestions that would get me on my way would be kindly appreciated. Once again, much thanks! Bob
  8. Well, I downloaded the Dell driver for my modem and had a difficult time unzipping it. I think that I got it unzipped. I do apologize but I have not had much luck with WinZip. However, after I "think" that I unzipped the driver then I booted into Linux and attempted to once again go through the process of configuring my internet connection. Again, failure. I am not familiar with the "kppp" program or how to access it. I was once years ago a big Red Hat fan and had success with it, but this Mandriva has almost beaten me to submission. I trust that you will be patient with me, as I admit that I know virtually nothing about Mandriva or KDE. I just want to get connected to the internet on a Linux platform and then I will go from there. Just one step at a time. Again, any additional advice or help is greatly appreciated.
  9. Greetings all! I am very frustrated beating my head against a wall with Mandriva 10.1. I have reinstalled it 3 times now in order for the O/S to recognize my modem. Background: Currently using a dual-boot system with XP and Mandriva. No problems there. When I choose Linux, everything checks out fine except for the "Bringing up interface eth0". I am able to bypass it by typing in </etc/modules.conf> however that does no good. When I get to the KDE desktop and check all the hardware that has been recognized, my modem which is CONEXANT D850 56K v.9XdfvC located on port Com3 is not there. I have attempted to set up all parameters, PRI & SEC DNS, IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, and Connection Name with no connection. Which is more frustrating is that Mandriva recognizes my Ethernet card which is BROADCOM 440x INTEGRATED 10/100 located on eth1. I am using a dialup connection by the way. I hope that I have provided enough information for someone to be able to help me with. Kind Regards, Bob Pace
  10. Greetings! I have a Mandrake installation problem. I am attempting to install version 10.1. At first after the installation (currently using O/S Win XP) on a Dell 2400 Dimension Desktop, Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 80GB ATA Hard Drive, upon booting up Mandrake was stopping at either "Mount USB Filesystem" or "Checking for New Hardware". I went into the BIOS and changed the USB emulation to "No Boot" and the USB controller to "OFF". Then I attempted to boot again, Linux went past the above 2 messages but stopped at "Bringing up interface eth0". I am unable to figure this one out. I hope that someone can assist me.
