Using these free Java implementations had\has two consequences: not working packages and\or ridiculous dependencies. Sun Java is now in the non-free repo. Use it. Save the extra work for yourselves and the frustration to your users.

As you may already have heard, KDE 4 Beta 2 is out. If you want to try it, there is a live CD based on OpenSuse here. This CD contains all modules of KDE plus a KOffice 2 and an Amarok 2 snapshot. No I don't like it because it's MS. No technical reasons. I just have enough of the tricks of MS triing to maintain its monopoly at all costs. Whatever they do I look at it suspiciously. For example in this case if they won over Flash, because that's what it's for, what holds them back to release a new closed Silverlight 2.0 which is incompatible with the open Silverlight 1.0?

If an other company would have done this I would say this is how it should be done.

Ok. Then I ask it a different way. Why do you need to login in a live CD which has only one window manager and its only purpose to help you install a system which is customized to your needs? Plus it's admittedly a mini CD.

Why is there a login manager on the mini ISO at all?

Even if it's alive Duval seems to make the same mistakes Mandrake had done before. No communication. The forum is very quiet. The latest post is in the topic called "The origin of your nickname". All other posts in the other topics are usually older at least with one or two weeks at best. The most visible change is the change of the website. It was a little different the last time I saw it back in May. The bug tracker is currently down.

Looks like it`s already installed under /lib/ try linking it to /usr/lib If you have broadband use hdlist.cz. That contains a lot more information about packages e.g. what files are in the packages. But it's also a way more bigger. Currently you seem to use the compressed index files (synthesis.hdlist.cz) which only contains the package name and a description of the package so you cant search for a file in a package with urpmf or the package manager.

According to the oficial news there is no DVD image at all. Only x86_32 free images. And there's a mini cd ISO too.

Webmin is for making remote system administration easy. So a web interface for iptables makes sense. But for installing\deleting on a remote machine I can't imagine a better solution than the plain old CLI over SSH though I admit I'm far from being an expert. Anyway if you're determined to do it, and it seems like you are, I don't wanna stop you. One more thing about GUI design: I found it here (post on 27th of july 2005).

AFAIk no. It's written only in C. Besides if you are just started to learn about kernels then you should start something which was written for teaching. Like Minix 1 or 2 or GNU/Fiwix. There should be others too.

I didn't, Apple did if it's a typo. Look at the page I linked, scroll down, on the right side there's a box called "Buy shake". It maybe just a very expensive software.

Linux kernel is written in C not C++. And if memory serves well Linus doesn't like the idea of C++ in the Linux kernel. If you're still interested you can try Haiku. It's written fully in C++ AFAIK.

But the regular GUI remains? Anyway browser based package managing doesn't make too much sense to me. I certainly wouldn't use it. I don't even know who would prefer it over the regular GUI.
