  1. Just a thought, how are the drives configured in the BIOS? Are they set to AUTO each time you turn the system on? It may be that they are being detected incorrectly, and that MDK thinks they are HDD. You could try forcing them to CD-ROM in the BIOS, and this may help. It's not something I've experienced, but only a thought that might be causing the issue.
  2. From the CLI type gnome-default-applications-properties then you get a window to choose default browser/email etc. Point it to the prog in the directory you installed it, and then add %s to the end to get shortcuts to work.
  3. Is this when you click html files when browsing? I've found that after changing the file types, and also running from cli: gnome-default-applications-properties that all my links work fine between email prog/firefox browser, but if I find a local html file it opens in Konquerer. I think this is because when you set the file extension properties, there is another option to change on how it should open. I've yet to test this myself, as I've not been too worried about it, but I'm pretty sure this is why.
  4. I had the same problem, what you want to do is from the CLI type the following: gnome-default-applications-properties Then you can select what browser/email prog you want to use for default. Once I'd done this my links in TBird opened in Firefox. You will need to point to the firefox entry to wherever you installed it: Eg for me: /home/ian/apps/firefox/firefox you will have to add %s to the end of the line so that shortcuts will open. You can also do the same for the email prog, so that when you click mailto links it'll work. :P
  5. I tried to install the following: libgtk+2.0_0-devel-2.2.4-9mdk it then prompted for one of the following: glibc-devel-2.3.3-12.8.100mdk or uClibc-devel-0.9.21-3mdk I selected the glibc (it was by default anyway), and then I got an error message: Sorry, the following packages can't be selected: libgtk+2.0_0-devel-2.2.4-9mdk.i586 (due to missing libgdk_pixbuf2.0_0-devel-2.2.4-10.1.100mdk.i586 Maybe I should give up? :o I've also noticed that because I downloaded 10.0 Official from a website, I'm missing the CD4. I only noticed this when thinking that if I install kdevelop I might be able to resolve the problem. Can I survive without this CD? (I've just burnt a 2GB DVD of 10.1 Official just in case I'm better upgrading).
  6. OK, thanks for that, I'll hold fire for the time being! I've had a look through install sw and there's a lot listed! Although I think some point to CD4, of which I don't have. Just downloaded 10.1 DVD version, so may see if any benefit to upgrade to this.
  7. Slight problem. I downloaded XFPROT and I need to run a ./configure on it apparently, before I can use make, and make install, etc. However, it said I needed the GTK+ kit, which I downloaded, and also need to run a ./configure on this too. But I keep getting an error saying that there is no C compiler on my system. What can I install to get around this? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  8. Hi Vertigo, I've installed Firefox on MDK 10.0 no problems. It came down in a zipped file, and I just extracted to home/ian/apps/firefox I then set a desktop shortcut for Firefox and I then dragged this to the icon panel, so that I had a shortcut (similar to the Windows Quick Links). To set the default, you type at the CLI: gnome-default-applications-properties You can then point to the browser under home/ian/apps/firefox, or wherever you installed to. Then you need to go into System/Configuration/Configure Your Desktop/Components/File Association. Under Application and also Text, look for items such as html and php, xml, etc that will launch using the current setting and add Firefox to the list. After you chose firefox in the directory, add a %U (for opening urls). Then make sure it's at the top of the list. Some plugins won't install automatically, however the Macromedia ones do. Java will be a pig, but if you see this post that I wrote, it'll tell you how to do it. http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?act=ST&f=10&t=20284 You should then be fine with Firefox.
  9. Hi, thanks for that flightcrank. I edited the file to set it, as it listed MDKGROUP instead of the one I had initially set. I restarted the service, and checked and nothing appeared. I put this down to that it had to wait a certain amount of time to automatically refresh itself. I did find though that I could force it by typing smb://workgroupname/ and I could then see the computers, but obviously I just needed to be more patient for the browse list to update. Feeling much more comfortable now I know a little more about what I'm doing :P
  10. OK, I've now done it for the following: main contrib jpackage club Do I just use the MandrakeUpdate option to pull down any of the items that are listed in here?
  11. Adam, thanks for that much appreciated. I understand it a bit more now. I'll try another set of mirrors a little later on and hopefully have a bit more luck setting it up! I'll see if I can get CLAM av too if it's GUI operated. Although from reading before, there aren't too many out there at present for Linux, but most likely will appear at some point.
  12. I now have samba working, but I'm finding that when I type smb:/ in Konquerer it doesn't always list the Windows workgroup that I have. I have to type smb:/workgroupname/ before I can actually browse it. This has happened since I changed my workground from MDKGROUP to another workgroup name. Does the smb take a while to update after you've rebooted the computer? Is there any way of speeding up this process so that it happens more quickly. I used the wizard to install samba, but is there a GUI configuration tool that can be used, rather than going through the wizard each time?
  13. I've tried that, but having a few problems. I copied the first line on the list into the CLI, and it was processing, as it listed the CD installations, and the existing update_source and then nothing happened. I did CTRL-C to abort, and thought I would try through the Software Media Manager, but this stopped responding. I had to reboot, as I couldn't do anything with adding media after this (needed to send the killall). Would this be a problem with the mirrors selected? Is it a trial and error and choose a mirror until they get added? Is the update_source all I would need, or should I add all the other sources too? Sorry about this, but new to MDK. Am happy to use CLI or GUI to add them.
  14. Many thanks for that. I've seen the way of doing it through the Remove option, and then listing where everything went. On the EasyURPMI front, is that something I need to do? All I did after initially installing MDK10 was to go to updates, and then found a mirror to connect to and get my system updates that way. What would all the other ones be for?
  15. Great thanks for that. I'm currently using Mandrake 10.0 Official, and I have just been running the RPM file directly, and then supplying the root password when prompted. I take it this isn't the best way to install? Should I be completing this a different way?
  16. Is there any way I can find out where a package was installed? I just installed F-Prot anti-virus, and the rpm package installed the program, but now I don't know where it is to launch and configure it. Is there an easy way to find out what package was installed, and where? As it happens I've just removed it anyway, so also, does anyone know of a good anti-virus package that has a GUI front end? Command line is OK, but would prefer a GUI one if possible. Free ones?
  17. OK. Thanks for that. Does that mean I can skip adding usernames and passwords when setting up samba for the Windows shares? Or do I still need to supply something? Thanks in advance!
  18. I've read the FAQ on samba setup, which is OK. Just got a couple of questions. I'm likely to be using the laptop for my home network and office network. Samba faq mentions I need to configure all sorts of things such as usernames and passwords (obviously for accessing the Windows shares). Is there a more simplified method of enabling samba so I can just see the Windows boxes and associated shares and access, and supply the usernames and passwords as and when I need them? Basically, I just want to enable samba so I can see the Windows boxes and go from there, as I use different usernames/passwords between my home and office networks. Or am I thinking too much like a Windows user! :P
  19. Let me add the paths and filenames that I had after downloading. Website www.java.com File downloaded jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.rpm.bin sh jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.rpm.bin Remove (I used KDE System/Configuration/Packaging/Remove Software) list alphabetically and remove the jre installed option. Find the jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.rpm file and double click this (or run the CLI option if you prefer - I'm new to this so I just use the GUI for now). It will install again (you cannot install over the top if it's already there). It should install to usr/java/jre1.5.0_01 Sit yourself in your firefox/plugins directory and type ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so If you type ll after you've typed it, you should see the link itself, and where it's pointing to. When you then lauch Firefox, go into Preferences and Web Settings and ensure Enable Java is selected, close and rerun Firefox, it'll be working fine.
  20. I managed to get this working last week with Firefox. I'm using the jre1.5 etc version. How I got it working was as follows: 1. sh - jre1.5.....rpm.bin (this extracts and installs). 2. Go into remove and find the jre option listed and select and remove. 3. Find the rpm (not rpm.bin) and install this. 4. Do the ln -s to the lib in the ns7 directory under the created usr/java/jre...etc directory. Then run Firefox, and ensure that in the Preferences that Use Java is selected, and away you go.
  21. Me too! Many thanks for your help, I'll bear in mind the MCC for the future, as I was a bit confused as to why there were a few options to choose from :-)
  22. I found that all the other apps are OK. I then found that the command for printing in Firefox just said lpr, and apparently (I did a quick search for Firefox as it was just this affected), and it was suggested putting lpr -cups. I then printed and it came out OK. All the other apps are fine at the moment. Is this common when apps are installed, that you need to alter this? Or will they pick it up automatically?
  23. Actually it's just Firefox that seems not to be printing. I just used KWrite, and that printed OK. How would I get Firefox to print?
  24. The firewall is disabled, I think it was the guest account that stopped, but now only test prints come off. I can't print in apps like Firefox.
  25. I just typed it all in, and it went through the config OK, but now when I print (or test print), nothing came off the printer. Then I decided to add a username and password instead of using guest, and I can now do test prints, but I can't print in Firefox or anything else.
