  1. Funny, MCC should just be running menudrake. Maybe because you're running MCC as root while running regular menudrake as user?

My solution to my menu updating woes was to open menudrake and select default kde menu as menu to use, then delete ~/.config/menus/applications-mdk.menu and then do 'ln ~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu ~/.config/menus/applications.mdk.menu' and just use kmenuedit to edit menus. I prefer kmenuedit anyway.

  2. Try going to console and running 'kmenuedit' and see what it says. I ran into some problems with my menus too recently. My menudrake and kmenuedit seemed to be fighting over which menu config to use. Menus are located in ~/.config/menus

Let me know what kmenuedit says

  3. You may want to check to see if you are using a feature called 'sub-pixel hinting.' This is basically a form of AA optimized for lcd screens. I'm using it on my laptop and it looks great, but if you're on a CRT it's not so great I hear (never seen it myself). I don't know where the setting is in GNOME, but in KDE it's in the antialiasing menu. May want to look for it or look it up.

  4. Hey all, I recently tried upgrading to kde 3.4 via thac's rpms. I have all rpm repositories configured via easy urpmi, and have thac's rpms setup as well. After installation I'm confronted with a login screen (mdkkdm?) that has a bunch of users such as 'admin,' 'games,' etc. (weren't there before . . . ) I click my regular login name on this screen and enter my password and the screen suddenly goes blank and I'm returned to the same login screen, over and over and over. I've checked some logs (though probably not the right ones, just anything I could find in /var/log) and have noticed nothing but complaints about inabilities to connect to X server. Any help would be so greatly appreciated.

  5. Not that it´s much help, but I have the same problem with wlan0 taking forever to bring up. I solved it, in true newbie style, by just disabling it on startup and running drakroam to connect once i´m booted. So if no better solution is suggested, you might just disable your eth0 from starting and connecting once you´re logged in.

I hope a better solution is presented for both our sakes :)

  6. I´m not an expert or anything, but there are two things I can think of here.

First, have you run mandrakeupdate and updated all the bugfix packages? I know default MDK 10.1 had a couple of problems with my usb key (though not what you´re describing).

Second, is your key being mounted when you plug it in or just not showing up on the desktop? open konqueror to /mnt/removable after you plug it in and see. If it´s being mounted and just no icon then you may not have the right icon settings for your desktop (specifically show mounted removable media).

But that´s all my little brain can think of, if these don´t work you´ll have to ask someone else :P

  7. One more thing, I had a similar problem and installed the MS ttf core font package, which you can get here. I wasn't able to find an .rpm, so you'll probably have to install from source. After installing make sure you add the fonts with the font installer :)

  8. well, I´ll try upgrading kde, if it doesn´t work with flac´s config-file suggestion I´ll try another wm. I´m new to linux still and decided I was going to learn kde but I´ve heard good things about fluxbox etc. so maybe this will be my opportunity to try a new wm. If not I´ll just reinstall, nothing mission critical on this computer.

Thanks for all the help guys,

    Mike

  9. My suggestion is to go here

I don't know about the pci adapters, but I got the pcmcia version of this card and it works wonderfully in linux. The pcmcia card at least uses an atheros chipset which is very linux friendly. And I might be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure you can use almost any wifi card in linux by loading the windows driver via ndiswrapper. But anyways, should be worth a shot, it's $10 cheaper and 802.11g.

  10. Ok, I deleted XF86Config and ran XFdrake....still the same problem. rpm -q xorg-x11 tells me it´s installed, top tells me only one instance of X....the only thing in xorg.0.log that shows any kind of error at all is stuff about my video card and direct rendering..so no big deal right now.

...So I´m thinking I probably broke my mandrake and might have to reinstall, unless someone´s got some other ideas?

    Thanks for the help guys,

    Mike

  11. Ok, took everyone´s advice (thanks btw) and removed my source 6.8.2 install (did ´make clean´, is that right?) rpm -e´d all xorg packages, and installed flac´s xorg 6.8.2 rpms (libs and main files). Unfortunately, still the same problem. I find it interesting that when I go to logout, and then hit reboot, it just seems to restart X (and solving all my problems) but when I hit ´reboot´ the second time it actually reboots the system. I just mention this for any possible troubleshooting. Well, any ideas are appreciated.

  12. Hey all, I recently installed x.org 6.8.2 over my old install, but now when I boot into kde I don´t get any keyboard response (ie can´t even ctrl-alt-f1). I can fix the problem by logging out (which, if it matters, takes much longer than it used to or probably should), telling it to ´halt´ (which doesn´t do anything, I just have to click the button for some reason) and then hitting ´reboot´, which seems to restart X, sticks me back in the login page, but with keyboard working. Also, checking processor usage before and after this process, with straight boot into kde (no-kb-mode) i´m using about 40% of system cpu (p3-700), after my little ´workaround´ i´m back down to <1% (where it used to be). Is it possible my system is starting two instances of X in one, the new and the old? What could cause this? I installed from source, using the instructions that came with it. I´m using Mandrake 10.1 Official with KDE 3.2 (default cd install). Ideas or pointers would be much appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Mike

P.S. Sorry for all the confusing parentheses (I just can´t help myself).

  13. Hey all, I'm new to linux and this board, happy to be part of the community. B)

I'm into ebooks (mostly gutenberg etexts) and am looking either for

    a ) A good ebook reader/ebook organizer

b ) If the ebook reader doesn't allow me to switch to side-view (useful for laptop bedtime reading :) ) a program that will allow me to change my desktop orientation, if such a thing exists. I'm using mandrake 10.1 with default KDE 3.2. Help is appreciated :)

    Thanks,

    Mike
