The kernels that you get from kernel.org do not include drivers from 3rd party vendors like nvidia, you have to goto your distribution and get their latest kernel from their ftp site. Then you can compile it yourself or just install the precompiled package. Use hardware that cooperates with Linux instead of hardware that deliberately does not cooperate with Linux. Windows has a hardware compatibility list, so does Linux. No the answer is to never update the kernel, this rewrites the working kernels files, rather install the latest version. This way you have two kernels to choose from when you boot up. When you know how to do this, it's childs play. I get them, it's fast with broadband, easy, and darn near fool proof when you know how to use the tools that your distro, in this case mandrake provides. I do however wait about 36 hours after a security, bug fix, normal update has been released, this way if there is a problem, I'll hear about it here, or somewhere on the internet.

Nope Eroaster will not work for me, and I'm not in the mood to figure out why, I'll just keep a eye out for the next release and see if that works. :lol:

tyme, those modules are loaded at startup here in mandrake 10.0 I just installed eroaster-2.2.0-0.6.4mdk I'll try and burn some stuff, and see if it can be done. Only been using K3B, and it works fine here. BTW why is it that when I click on Preview Post it does not, it Add Reply? Makes it kinda difficult to edit.

The last time I installed windows fonts, back in mandrake 9.0, what I had to do after I launched the font installer. And to get all of them was to goto the folder they are in through the font installer, then instead of selecting the fonts in that folder, I just clicked on OK OPEN whatever it was in the dialog box, and then it added all the fonts in that folder to the main font installer, from there I had to click on install fonts. It did take a few minutes to install all of the fonts. It wasent documented very well back then and I expect that it isn't documented very well today. I havent tried to install microsoft fonts in mandrake 10.0 though.

Richard, here is a Tip on how to install fonts the "GUI" way in Mandrake. Usually I would goto the font installer in mandrake 10.0, but for just 1 at a time oh... like 2 or 3 times a week, or month, this way is much quicker. It just blows the command line right out of your mind. :lol: However just because this is so easy is no excuse for not learning the command line in due time after they get tired of all that point and click action. :D

Mandrake tweaks their kernels some, while you get the original linus kernel from kernel.org ie, they don't always work as expected in mandrake. Not really, otherwise the server would not return 'server authentification failed' When the password is correct, then most likely its your login name thats incorrect. This depends on how your isp has their login setup for email, example: login: bob OR login: bob@home.net It will be only one of these. On both SMTP and POP3 That was my inital problem getting setup to send and recieve email, after the change kmail has worked fine. Hope this helps. :D

If you are just grabbing a few xmms skins from the internet as a user, you don't have to extract them, just move them to your .xmms/Skins directory, and XMMS will use them. $ cd .xmms $ ls Plugins/ Skins/ $ cd Skins $ ls Blizzard.wsz Kenwood_KDC-2019.wsz Panasonic_Old_Style.wsz chaos_XMMS.zip Nucleo_Alien_Mind.wsz Expensive_Hi-Fi_1.1.wsz Nucleo_N-Log1.wsz Because the root user doesnt need to play music, there isn't much point in installing new skins global unless you have a bunch of trusted users that you want to have access to those skins. There should be xmms skin rpms in the 'software package installer' that you can download that will install the skins global so every user has access to them. May even be on one of the cds.

Here is my take on this issue Ixthusdan This is a drive problem. The LG CD-ROM firmware did not stick to the established standards. Probably due to cost cuts to 'save a buck'. Where LG says that they do not test or support their drives in Linux is just a cop-out, this is just a standard cover your ass policy when problems crop up. Devices are supposed to protect eeprom registers... they should be out of the way, where nothing will go for starters, and they should only be accessible through special routines (i.e. flash program)(thanks Grogan) If a developer can brake (fry a chip) a CD-ROM with software, something is wrong with that drive model. How can anyone develop any device driver, if you are always at risk of burning the device out? No doubt that this issue will be resolved very soon as to what actually happened and why it happened.

Why: According to LG Electronics, their ODD (Optical Disc Drive) products do not support Linux nor do they test with Linux. Unfortunately, many Dell computers (possibly others) come with these CD-ROM drives. Solution: Currently there is no solution or work-around for this issue; it is still under investigation. Damage occurs even when doing a network install. At this point, please do not install Mandrake Linux 9.2 on any computer containing a LG-based CD-ROM or it will damage your CD-ROM! We are actively looking for a solution to this problem.

Didn't I read that the .iso was sent to the cd makers to create the cds and packaging for the boxed set, and that was on oct 14th. It could happen, but I kind of doubt that it will. Sad really. This will put the hurt on dial-up users.

Sounds like what happenned is that the rpm you downloaded the first time wasent complete to begin with, ie., you got a 1.5 meg rpm when you should of got 2 meg rpm. It's happened to me before. Thats why I always look at the size of the rpm I'm going to download, and compair my copy of it to what size it's suppose to be. If you can check the md5sum, all the better. I've had to goto a different ftp site to get the complete rpm twice in 1 year, cause the ftp site that I originally tried had a incomplete rpm. It's rare but it happens. I have never had a bad rpm install when using urpmi or the MCC software manager to install software. Thats why I use these tools whenever I can. Congratulations on fixing this all by yourself. :D

For KDE, Right click on a empty spot on the kicker (task bar in windows lingo) then select: Add-> Applet-> Quick Launcher, and click on it. It will add the quick launcher to the kicker panel. Now right click on one of the 6 empty folders and navigate to the application that you want in the quick launcher, and click on that. You can have as many or as few apps in the quick launcher as you want. There is a system tray and a quick launcher, from what you describe I suspect that what you are looking for is the quick launcher, because it does what microsofts system tray does.
