  1. I'm using ptp at the moment, how would I go about changing this?
  2. under devices I have hdc and hdd (DVD drives) and a floppy drive. under /dev i only have sda, sda1, sda2, sda5, sdb and sdb1. and these drives (sda and sdb) corrispond to my 2 SATA drives. looking at Harddrake I see the following with reference to my camera (under "Unknown/Others") Identification Vendor: ‎Eastman Kodak Company Description: ‎KODAK EasyShare Z740 Zoom Digital Camera Media class: ‎Imaging|Still Image Capture|Picture Transfer Protocol (PIMA 15470) Connection Bus: ‎USB Bus PCI #: ‎1 PCI device #: ‎39 Vendor ID: ‎1034 Device ID: ‎1416 Misc Module: ‎usbfs
  3. both HAL and messagebus daemons are running and I have no reason to suspect they are faulty.
  4. I'm the proud owner of a cymotion Linux keyboard, but I cant remember where i got it from. I only bought it because I was in the process of removing all things microsoft from my possesion (including MS office keyboard), and of course because it had tux in the corner. now I've been MS free for a few months, and considering I'm still very new to linux i'm quite happy with that :D anyway asside from me and my achievments, its a nice keyboard :P
  5. thanks for the info. And appologies for taking a while to say thanks, just spent a week in greece (without a computer :o ) Cheers again, Owen Mc
  6. What you suggested was never unclear, it just doesn't work. Here is a screenshot of mine to demonstrate what i mean. it shows F9 > Services and the result of typing "media:/camera" in the address bar. Sorry for being a pain, but thanks for the help so far. Owen Mc
  7. cheers for the reply, thought it'd be something simple. however what you suggested doesn't work. typing "media:/" just brings up google (seaching for "media:/") and neither F9>Services and Go have a "Storage" option. Is there something I need to install for konqueror to do this? or does my camera not support it? Cheers again Owen Mc PS. Camera is plugged in (and working as usual in flphoto)
  8. Hey there, I've just got myself a new camera (Kodak EasyShare Z740) and to my surprise (and delight) it works fine with linux (Mandriva 2005LE). Plug it in (USB) and up pops flphoto and using "USB PTP class camera" I can retrieve all my photos. However, firstly I can not get hold of videos which I have taken on the camera (in an unknown format, but I'd like to see if they will play in Mandriva). And secondly, I find it more convenient to deal with external devices (such as MP3 players, mobile phones, and cameras) as storage devices. I've had a quick look into gphoto2 which i believe is the heart of flphoto (and similar programs) and this does offer command line directory style browsing but it is somewhat cumbersome. Ideally I'd like to be able to browse my camera using konqueror (and upload/download pictures/files to and from it as I wish), or if required use a gphoto2 frontend which looks the same. As I said, for its main use the camera is working perfectly with Mandriva, but the windows software for kodak cameras does allow you to treat them as a sort of USB hard drive which would be ideal. I've stayed windows free for months now, and I dont intend to go back just for camera functionality, but any solution would be welcomed. Many thanks in advance, Owen Mc
  9. Hey all, After I recently updated my machine to all new hardware, I did a fresh install of Mandriva 2005LE. however the installation froze while loading the SATA controller (NVIDIA CK804 i think), this worried me for a while as i thoughti might have to use windoze on my new machine, but after thinking about it i tried the install using 'linux noapic' and it didn't freeze. The rest of the install was fine and I'm writing this message from my new machine which is in perfect working order. My question is, why does the installation freeze? and how does noapic fix it? and finally, does this have any consequences, such as a performance drop? (I cant say that i've noticed any) I'm in no real hurry for answers, just looking to broaden my knowledge a little, any replies welcomed. Cheers Owen Mc
  10. Many thanks, superkambara + some simple bar theme i found is exactly what i need. might mess around with some fancy themes at a later date, but for now I'm happy with this. Cheers for replies, Owen Mc
  11. Hey, After resolving some massive hardware problems (by means of a 100% upgrade :P ) I'm back on linux again. A fresh install today all went fine, installed wireless drivers, messed around with ALSA, then went to set up my virtual desktops, and got thinking. Is it possible to have icons that only appear on one desktop? I understand whatever is situated in ~/Desktop is displayed on all desktops but is there a way of having a folder which contains icons to display on one particular desktop. Failing this, is it possible to have some kind of menu or panel which stays pinned to a particular desktop and can contain icons speficid to that desktop? I'm sure this must be possible but the means to do it escapes me, so I am asking the masses for Cheers in advance, Owen Mc [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  12. Ok now i'm even more confused... I logged in using GNOME, which had the default background. changed it to the same backgroudn as KDE, went back to KDE and ran Eterm, and now it uses the right picture. Does this mean that GNOME is running at the same time as KDE? If so then why?, and if not then why does this solve my problems? I guess its good that I got it working, but in doing so I'm further confused. Can anyone explain? Cheers Owen Mc
  13. Apologies to all, should think before I post. the module was 'usb-storage', who'd have guessed that ah well, it works now :D Owen Mc
  14. Hey all, I've just bought a new phone (Sony Ericsson K750i) and it comes with a cable to connect it to a PC via USB. Also comes with software for Windows and Mac, but nothing for linux (to be expected i guess). In windows (on laptop) I can connect the phone and access the memory stick on the phone just like any other filesystem. When I plug it in on my linux box it shows up in Harddrake under "Unknown/Others" and says "Module: unknown" I imagine that I need to load a module to be able to mount the memory stick, but which one? Any help would be appreciated Cheers Owen Mc
  15. Thanks for that, got the settings to stick by editting user.cfg But the background thing is still confusing me. If I leave the Eterm window running from the start of the session (where it uses the KDM background rather than desktop background) then after 10 minutes the background changes to the desktop background and so appears transparent. I have timed this, and it is exactly 10 minutes after starting the session, it seems to me that KDM (or some part of it?) is running in the background (behind KDE?) and so Eterm is picking this up as the "desktop", if this is the case then why does KDM close after 10 minutes?? As you can probably see, I have no idea what I'm talking about anymore, so I wonder if someone more educated in the ways of linux could explain this one? Thanks again to daniewicz, and thanks in advance to anyone else.. Owen Mc
  16. Well I've solved the second problem, seems that I took "killall" too literally, assuming it would kill all processes. turns out it just kills all processes that have the name you specify so "killall Eterm" works fine. First problem still bugging me tho, any ideas? Cheers, Owen Mc
  17. Hey Everyone, I've been playing with Mandriva for a while now (and since any of my lasts posts I've completely removed all traces of M$ from my box). Got everything running just as I like it, so now I'm working on aesthetics. Since I have very few icons on my desktop I decided to make it stick Eterm over it, giving me a terminal window on top of the desktop. Using the following I got it to look just right... Eterm -x -g 180x70+10+10 --buttonbar=0 --trans --shade=1 --scrollbar=no -c white And after some playing around with Window Behaviour I made it do what i want. Now this looks good and i presumed that if i restarted my machine it'd still be there. However upon restarting I do have an eterm window but with none of the associated options (so not transparent, or stuck to desktop). This is fine as I can just close this window and start again, but I would like to automate this process. Firstly, I put the command in a script and stuck it in the KDE autostart folder. This works, but instead of using my desktop image to make itself "transparent" it uses the background image from KDM, which gives me a big, ugly, blue square on the desktop. I inserted a sleep period into the script file to make sure that KDE was completely loaded (and so KMD completely gone?) before executing the command but this was no help. If anyone can help me with this problem it'd be much appreciated. Secondly, since the Eterm window doesn't behave properly when restoring the session is there anyway to automatically close this window on shut down? I'm pretty new/useless with scripts, but i have managed to determine the PID of the window (since it'll be the only Eterm window running) using ... ps -C Eterm -o pid= But I cant seem to use the output of this in the "kill" command, any help with this would also be gratefully accepted. None of this is urgent as it is just me being picky with looks, but there must be people out there with sollutions so I thought I'd better ask just to keep them busy :P Thanks in advance, Owen Mc
  18. Sorry for not replying sooner, been away from my box. Cheers for replies, I've come to the same conclusion as kmc77 and switched to vsftpd. Just as easy to use, and with seperate user config files (handy). Cheers Owen Mc
  19. Hey all, I've just started up my home FTP server using ProFTPD in Mandriva 2005LE. Set up firewall and router to allow port 21 through, and everything worked fine. After a few day I decided to change the port, for a little more security. Changed the port in proftpd.conf, changed port in firewall config and changed port on router, but when I try connecting from a reomte computer it fails to connect (shows up in proftpd logs as normal up to the point where the "LIST" command usually appears, at this point I recieve either an error, or just a hang in the client application, and no further entries in the log). very occasionally it'll connect very slowly with "PORT" commands showing up in the logs, which dont normally appear. I tried setting a range of passive ports and opening these in firewall and router, and this has not helped. As soon as i set the port back to 21 it all works again. Have i missed something obvious here or should this work? If i've missed anything then please tell me what, and if this should work then any help troubleshooting would be much appreciated. Cheers, Owen PS. I did remember to restart the server everytime i make a change (as i have previously forgotten to do this with other changes only to be informed that that was the reason)
  20. First time posting here, only just finished customising. Minimalist, but I like it Mandriva 2005LE
  21. Thanks Baka, worked a charm. but I've no idea why. Anyone care to explain how changing fstab from: /dev/hda1 /mnt/NTFS ntfs umask=0022,nls=iso8859-15,ro 0 0 to /dev/hda1 /mnt/NTFS ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-1,ro 0 0 allows users to read ? Anyway, for now i'm happy. Thanks again Baka Owen
  22. Hey all, Following a clean install of Mandriva 2005 Limited Edition I can no longer access my NTFS partitions as a user. I have 2 partitions, one mounted as /mnt/NTFS and the other unmounted. I have tried changing the permissions as root but it tells me that it cant because its a read only file system. Now i'm not interested in writing to NTFS, just would like to know how to change the permissions such that a user can read it. Any ideas? Cheers, Owen
  23. Wow, thanks Fahd Wasn't expecting a sollution quite so soon. googled for that rpm, installed, and all is fine. still dont quite understand why it worked before as i'm sure i never installed that rpm last time round, but i'm not really bothered now since it works. Once again Cheers Owen
  24. Hi all, After some recent problems with my machine I had to reinstall Mandriva 2005 Limited Edition. After doing so I've been setting stuff up again to work how I liked it, and when it came round to DVD's I installed libdvdcss (which i believe was all i had to do before) and stuck a DVD in the drive. Kaffeine pops up (just like it used to), appears to be loading something and then gives the following error: "The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g. no disc in drive). (Error reading NAV packet.)" Now this is an error i've never seen before. If I look in the playlist after this error has occured I can see the DVD titled listed, but it wont play. Using xine I get the same error, but running xine from the terminal gives the following message when i attempt to play a DVD. "libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable." I don't know exactly what this means. Anyway, I've used Mandriva 2005 before, and having only needed to install libdvdcss (i think) to play DVD's in kaffeine/xine I would like to know whats gone wrong and what I can do to fix it? Cheers, Owen PS. Using MPlayer, nothing happens (no errors, but wont play either). and using Totem I get: "An Error Occured: The source seems to be encrypted, and can't be read. Are you trying to play an encrypted DVD without libdvdcss?" Which I'm not, so thats no help.
  25. Thanks kristi, It's official, I'm an idiot :D yes I'd changed inittab back to run level 5 yes I'd changed "nv" to "nvidia" but no I hadn't added nvidia to modprobe.preload Now I have, and all is well. Cheers again, nice quick resolution to that problem Owen Mc
