  1. I think I can end this debate pretty quick. Without using exact quotes from above I think I can sum it up. I said new users do not know all of the commands to do things and a root GUI helps them. They will learn. I just installed a nvidia driver that hosed the whole thing. My title bars disappeared, the screen went white when I tried to fix that so I clicked where I knew stuff was and it was there, and I tried to change the driver back and said screw it...and did a reinstall of the whole thing. But I have a back up because linux is known to throw curve balls at times. I was shooting in the dark and got it back but I am not going to dig through thousands of files to see what is wrong. This whole security thing about a root GUI is NULL...you know what that is don't you??? Well I forgot, when you install it gives you the option to set the administrator or ROOT users with NO password so your security just flew out the window!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know, anyone who knows what they're doing would never do that....BUT we were talking about new users who don't know what a CLI is....right??? I do...I used CLI since the old days as in beep-beep and that was your sound. 8 colors and half-bright gave you 16...how about the Amiga? Means friend! I guess you should fix that install (root user) with no password before you complain that someone wants to use a GUI as root.
  2. I went to yahoo and it looked like the old yahoo from way back. Just a bare page with a search box so to speak. It says: Why miss out? In order to see all the new Yahoo! home page has to offer, please upgrade to a more recent browser. Well, I changed the browser identification to IE 6 on XP and guess what? I get all of the page. It is not that Konqueror cannot display it, it is that yahoo is blocking this browser when identified as itself! What a crock. A new user might think Linux is no good and go back to windows. On the upside, I don't have to look at all the crap, and yes I know...Use Google...I do but there are probable many more sites that do this. So for those of you who use yahoo and can't figure out why your pages do not display right it seems Konqueror has been black balled by yahoo.
  3. It seems search does not work when you select install software. I searched for kdewebdev and nothing even though it has been added to media manager. A urpmi kdewebdev-3.5.4-4mdv2007.0.i586 installs it so it does know where it is, it just don't show up in a search or on the list to install. Any fix?

    Warning

Yesterday I downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8776-pkg1 from Nvidia and so far so good. My openGL is not working but it didn't work before. At least Cedega says its not. SuperTux crashes if I try to enable it so I don't know. Something to work on I guess.
  5. I think the point here has been missed. Some of the new users don't know all of the commands to do things and a GUI as root makes it easier. Granted, it is also easier to trash your system but as they say, live and learn. The root user can be hidden and with a good password you should be protected. Anyone who wants to hack into your system surly knows how to elable root login. We didn't say Mandriva should enable it by default, but that it should not be hidden so deep in a file. As I said, when I first started with linux I used the root login to the GUI to poke around everywhere. It made it much easier to find files like /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc and learn for myself without asking someone where a setting was. I was also able to figure out some of the file system and where programs are installed. Most people don't need NASA strength security because who cares what you have? ANd as I said, a good password (something other than your dogs name) should protect most people from someone sitting down at their computer and logging in as root and using their desktop like a video game! KDE also said this: Although this means that it is easy to perform administrative tasks without hassle, it also means that there are no security restrictions imposed upon it. Thus, a small typographical error or other mistake can result in irrevocable damage. Key words being "easy to perform administrative tasks without hassle" and "can result in irrevocable damage". Easy to administer and cause irrevocable damage. Well you have been warned.
  6. Here is what I get: [john@localhost ~]$ su root Password: [root@localhost john]# urpmi kdetheme no package named kdetheme [root@localhost john]#
  7. Ok, that worked great for my home folder. Would it work for all users if you put it in the root folder? Not root user, but root. There is a /.kde/share/config folder but no kickerrc file. This is a great fix though. Do you know where the file is that reads this rc file? I mean, some place it has the file name of the icons. If you could change that it might make it system wide also. Thanks a bunch...that star just looked so (whatever, can't think of a word to describe it). You'd think Mandriva would read this and change it! People have hated that star since day one!

    XMMS in 2007?

Just the DVD but it is not on there. I just can't see a good reason to exclude it.
  9. When I first started with linux I ran as root a lot to find out WHAT NOT TO DO! That will teach you fast. I didn't mind the reinstalls and all the crap...doing it all over and over helped me remember things. Anyway, I like root login too when I have a lot I want to do as root. I start a new session as root and make system wide changes or whatever and I agree entering a password every 30 seconds sucks. Root GUI saves me a lot of hassle. It stinks where they have hidden the settings for this. Something else to remember, that is untill next version when they MOVE IT!
  10. This is driving me nuts! I put the code under [KMenuButton_1] because I see no plain [KMenu] section...didn't work. Am I in the wrong place? I am in the right file I believe.
  11. Where is what? Right there is install new theme and create new theme.

    XMMS in 2007?

So far as I can tell XMMS is not in Mandriva 2007. I will never understand why but I added it in from v2005. You can find it on any of the FTP's that have Mandriva. Anyone know why it is gone? Mandriva is really screwing up some things in my opinion. There are two control centers and should just be one. Sometimes I really wish someone would make a version that stays the same from version to version as in STUFF IN THE SAME PLACE!
  13. Goto control center/Appearance & Themes/Theme Manager
  14. Thanks man, that is the answer and here it is again right here: For those who don't know where the file is it is in /etc/X11. You need to edit xorg.conf and add the line Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT" to the file under the devices section. Section "Device" there is stuff here Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT" End Section Just add it before the end section and you be good to go. Someone ought to stickey this!
  15. I sure wish Aussie John would drop by and answer this. Hello, my real name is John too and I sure see you are up on linux pretty good. Read the happy bday thread too, so happy 71st. Anyway, I have looked through config files till I'm blue in the face!
  16. Well here is where I'm at. I installed the kernel sources so I could install this: Linux Display Driver - IA32 Version: 1.0-8178 Operating System: Linux IA32 Release Date: December 22, 2005 Now nvidia-settings works (I read about that somewhere and mine didn't work). So I'm off to a good start I guess but I still have the same problem. It sucks because I can't go to a console because the screen is all screwed up. Still have not found nothing about framebuffer etc. I assume it (the problem) is in a script that shuts down the X server.
  17. MCC>boot does not show frame buffer on mine...
  18. Ok, I just installed 2006 official and am tuning it now. When I shutdown I get a screen that looks like the old 8 bit computers when you reset. All random characters etc and blinking here and there. I can't read the shutdown messages and that sucks in case there were a problem and it just ain't right. My 10.1 official also did this so I am hoping someone knows how to fix this. It appears that when it exits the hi-res mode of KDE it is going to the wrong mode and is not a sync rate problem. It displays the wrong video memory etc. This is not a major problem keeping me from running but I hope there is a cure. Here is my video card & driver information from Hardrake which is the correct card: Description: ‎NV11 Geforce2 MX/MX 400 Module: ‎Card:NVIDIA GeForce2 DDR (generic) From installed software: Name: nvidia_legacy Version: 7174-3mdk Architecture: i586 Size: 10246 KB Summary: NVIDIA module for Xorg 6.9.0 server and OpenGL libraries Name: dkms-nvidia_legacy Version: 7174-3mdk Architecture: i586 Size: 4718 KB Summary: NVIDIA kernel module for NVIDIA Architecture support Description: NVIDIA Architecture support for Linux kernel Name: nvidia_legacy-kernel-2.6.12-12mdk Version: 7174-1mdk Architecture: i586 Size: 1335 KB Summary: nvidia_legacy driver for Kernel 2.6.12-12mdk Description: dkms binary kernel modules for the nvidia_legacy driver version 7174, built for the 2.6.12-12mdk kernel.
  19. Very good info ianw1974, That is what I was looking for and I didn't post that it was 10.1 because I didn't know about the difference between 10 and 10.1. Anyway I have gotten my 2006 up and going and am working on the true type fonts now. I love mandrake even though it hacks me back! I guess its Mandriva now, going to be hard to get used to. I am not new to linux. I started with RH 5 or 6 or so, then quickly moved to mandrake moving through like 7,8,9,10 and here I am. As usual I learned a few things with this install and also had to dig in the back of my head to remember what I do know. I really hope Mandriva does great things! And thanks a bunch for the tips on kat & lisa. I read that somewhere around here and forgot about it. I posted this here because it was an install question, should I? I'm glad I did but for those reading this I first tried grub and it didn't work as in the past. I dual boot XP and linux and write the boot sector on the drive linux is on then tell the XP boot loader where the .bin file is. I have posted it here a year or two ago under dual boot or something. But for the record, my method still does not work with grub.
  20. Thanks guys. I found the post where Aussiejohn answered this question. For the life of me I'll never figure out why linux (pretty much all of them) moves things or pulls a stunt like this from version to version.
  21. I found the menu at the bottom to select KDE etc. Just tired I guess but I sill like the one where you can click your name to log in. Still can't find how to get it back.
  22. Ok, I got 2006 installed and it comes up with a login screen that has no way to choose KDE or Gnome. I like the old one best. I have looked all over and cannot find where to enable the old login menu. Where is it? Looks pretty nice though...
  23. By upgrade I meant clean install of 2006. I had 10 community and it locked up with USB thumb drive. 10.1 seems ok but I had read about the new USB stuff and kernel amd thought I might switch because I don't mind the work. It is all a learning experience for me. I still use windows a lot for various reasons but I am very much looking forward to dumping windows. I finally got a USB scanner that works under linux as does my camera. Video playback gives me a lot of trouble in linux, but it is getting better. Also, this would be my first Mandriva, as in after the name change and I thought I should at least catch up for name sake!
  24. Is there any reason to upgrade to 2006 over 10.1? I have looked around a bit but thought you guys could just simply tell me yes or no for whatever reasons. Thanks
  25. After inserting a USB device, my jumpdrive or Fuji digital camera Konqeror no longer opens and you cannot open a file browser such as clicking the home icon on the desktop. I have seen lots of people with this problem. Most say install all the updates to fix it. It seems to me there is an easier way than a 514 MB update. I have found a good workaround for the Konqeror lockups after using a USB device. I don't know why exactly this works but it does. Right click the desktop, select configure desktop, and click behavior, then to the device icons tab. Uncheck show device icons. It seems while trying to display the icon for the USB device it hangs. I then browse to the /mnt/camera or /mnt/removable to access the device. No hangs! It would be nice to fix this where everything works right. I'll keep on it and any help would be appreciated. But this way at least you can browse files and the web to try and find an answer. Yankee
