Originally I had disks in my old PC, where I used one SATA disk with Mandriva 2010 and second ATA disk with Windows. Later I added Mandriva 2010 on the ATA too. There was no problem with booting. Mandriva detected the ATA disk with no problem. Then I bought a PC. The M/B of the new PC supports this configuration:

channel 0 master: reserved for IDE disks

channel 0 slave: reserved for IDE disks

channel 1: master: reserved for IDE or SATA disks

channel 1: slave: reserved for IDE or SATA disks

channel 2: master: reserved for IDE or SATA disks

channel 2: slave: reserved for IDE or SATA disks

channel 3: master: reserved for IDE or SATA disks

channel 3: slave: reserved for IDE or SATA disks

I installed the IDE disk without jumper and the BIOS detect this disks:

IDE Channels:

channel 0 master: WD160 ... ATA disk with Mandriva

channel 0 slave: empty

channel 1: master: empty

channel 1: slave: empty

channel 2: master: SATA WD500... (Windows 7 here)

channel 2: slave: SATA ST350.... Mandriva here

channel 3: master: SATA ST... or here (not sure)

channel 3: slave: SATA DVD-ROM ....

I can Boot to Windows 7 on WD500 and I see all disks. But when I bood into ST350... Mandriva 2010 so it did not detected the ATA disk. I see only the SATA disks. Block devices listed by command blkid. I also checked /dev/ fomder for hd... but nothing. I also tried to boot the WD160.. Mandriva 2010 but this is the same (but not exactly the same). How is it? It started to boot so the ATA disk was found. It loaded some files from the WD160... and then it waited for detection of the disk starting with UUID=0877CB8-FB95... but unsuccessful. It halted the system as it cannot detect the disk. How is it it was not detected when the system files were loaded? Is there any way to solve this? Why Mandriva on ST350... loaded successfully but the one on WD160... not?

Edit: Also Mandriva 2010 CD Live cannot detect the ATA disk.

Hi all. This is not a Mandriva/Mageia query, but I'm sure we can sort it.

This is for a MK802 arm device with android on the flash memory, but boots off a correctly structured sd card. I grabbed the image from:

Lubuntu image, so it's an image not a self generated install.

My MK802, of course, has a different wireless chip to that used in the image (I assume this means I have a Chinese copy :( ).

So this is what I can tell you:

The App and system seem to freeze up regularly during the reviewing and clipping stage and I haven't got to the final joining up stage.

The box has 8Gbs of DDR3 memory and what I think is a reasonably fast video card.

Is there something I am missing in all this. Note all the video clips are on a HDD in a USB3 Dock.

all been working fine for a long time, but when deleting virtualbox OSE for virtualbox full ( due to lack of USB support, my graphics driver reverted to basic only.

I still have multi monitor support but the 3d accelaration / rendering has completely gone. This causes very slow file manipulation/ browsing and the only solution I can think off is a full reload.

As I have multiple partitions and raid stacks i was wondering if any of you guys has another solution?

Not sure which matrox driver I had running was either (mtxdriver-installer-x86_32-1.4.6, or mtxdriver-installer-x86_32-cvs-20090511) but have tried re-installing both - to no avail. must have lost all 3D/GLX reference's/ files

My old router has died, and has been replaced with the new unit Netgear WNDR3800. The new router works very well with all Windows and Ubuntu PCs, and kindles that I have at home. The only unfortunate exception is my Mandriva 2008 laptop.

The WiFi interface is recognized by the router, and it obtains the IP address. The nameserver and routing table are also configured OK. I can ping the router. However web browsing is painfully slow. I tried to modify the routing table to make it look exactly like the table in Ubuntu, where the WiFi performance of this laptop is blissful fast (the laptop has Ubuntu 8.04 as well on one of the partitions), but that did not help either.

Will anybody here be able to help with fixing this? The card works fine with Ubuntu and Windows on the same Laptop, so it is clearly a Mandriva related issue. I had previously had occasional problems with configuring this card, but usually could fix these problems by running through the interface config procedure. Unfortunately, doing so does not help this time around.

Here is some detailed information. The WiFi card is INTEL Pro Wireless 4965AGN. I have been using the native Intel driver that came with Mandriva.

Hello,

Running Mandriva 2010.2 and using a GeForce 210 video card (if more hardware info is required, please let me know what). Monitor is a Hyundai B90a on the vga port (recognized by system and running fine - hope to upgrade soon to dvi monitor, though).

What I am looking to do is to feed the HDMI output from the GeForce (same as I am seeing on the monitor) through a wireless HDMI (Philips) to my TV. Let me say well in front that I am no expert on video, hdmi, etc. In any case, I have attached the HDMI wireless to the GeForce graphics card HDMI port, but the Mandriva system does not recognize it as a monitor, so it appears that I will not be able to use the 'configure your desktop' monitor section to make the hdmi live.

How do I go about activating the HDMI output?? I am assuming that HDMI is HDMI, so configuration is not relevant - but of course that could be way wrong too. Hopefully this is dead simple, and someone out there with some hands on can provide guidance..... I'm guessing that I will have to go in and manually edit a file or two.

I am trying to view streaming media (sports) and after about 15 minutes the screen goes blank - rest of system is still running (can hear the sound still). A little mouse movement brings the screen back. I have disabled the screen saver (system settings / desktop) which apparently does not help with the blanking issue. Is this with the P5K powersaving or with Linux? Fix please ....

USB connected Samsung ML-2151N mono-laser printer was automagically installed on PCLOS 2010 on Toshiba A305 laptop via printerdrake and has been fine for about 2 months with all apps except PDF's which have been slow but I did nothing about it until now, so I tinkered with some GUI settings and printer now no longer prints.

This printer has been automagically recognized and operational for years on MDV 2005LE, 2008.1, and most recently on a desktop with PCLOS 2009.1 and the Tosh laptop with PCLOS 2010.

1. A Brother DCP7020 prints quickly including pdf's on the Tosh laptop (pclos 2010).

2. The Samsung prints fine including quick pdf's on two desktops (MDV2008.1) and another desktop with PCLOS 2009.1.

Preface: Samsung shows up in lsusb on Tosh laptop

I generally hard cycle the printer and reboot after all the following procedures:

3. So now let's just stick with Samsung on Tosh laptop. Removed printer and reinstalled via PCC. Samsung is installable via printerdrake via PCC and then seen by CUPS and shows up in application print dialogues- but no printing

4. Removed printer again via printerdarke- tried reinstalling via CUPS - no go - CUPS admin in browser accepted root username/ password ONCE but no longer will accept any combination of username and psswd. Have read threads about adding cupsys, lpadmin to /etc/group. etc etc. Should not have to do this.(sorry but don't think much of CUPS web administration, never have, and neither do others) BTW, I CAN delete printer from printerdrake but CANNOT delete it from CUPS once it has been installed via printerdarke (PCC), so deleted printer again via PCC printerdrake.

5. Installed Samsung unified linux driver which installs fine but then "add printer" does not recognize its own printer.

I must have altered something in trying to solve slow pdf's ( 1 page every 2-3 minutes) but don't know what I did. Can't figure why Samsung shows up in lsusb, printerdrake, CUPS and application dialogues, but no printing from ANY app, including printerdrake test pages.

Final clue:(I believe CUPS is showing this USB connected printer on a parallel port)

Related question: Why does task-printing package show up as installed but size is 0 bytes in synaptic? The Brother DCP all-in-one mono-laser is working fine on the Tosh so I guess task-printing must be installed and working? Yes?

Any ideas appreciated

Hi there,

Was wondering if any one had experienced this problem,

When Opensuse 11.4 was released I tried to give it a whirl but when I pop the live cd in a boot it,

it boots to the splash screen then all seems fine for a brief period then bang, all I get is thin coloured

lines down the screen. Oh well I never really like Suse anyways.

Now with much trepidation, I have a fondness for Mandriva as it was the first

Distro that kept me with going with linux, I downloaded Mandriva 2011 and burnt it to disc.

Booted it up and voila the same thing that happened to Opensuse as described above, happens now

in Mandriva 2011. I have a fear now that when Ubuntu is released in October I will get the same thing

happening. Which will be bad as Pardus ( Pardus, Ubuntu and Mandriva are my faves) stuffed up with their

latest release, I will have to go back to Windows (I have tried lots of other distros but they never suited me)!

I have a radeon hd2400 and have had no driver issues in past when running a linux distro it just

seems to be these new releases!

Hoping someone might be able to shed some light!

Ok, I believe that this is a fairly simple fix, but to be honesty my system has been running so steady for so long I have forgotten a LOT of what I used to know, so I'm hoping you can help a (getting)older guy with what I believe is a simple fix.

Running 2011 x64 on a 6 core AMD w/ 8GB ram NVIDIA and a 17" flat screen

I wasn't thrilled with my desktop resolution, and when I looked I saw that the monitor was listed as default but I was quite sure mine was listed.

So I went to the control panel/hardware/video and changed the monitor to the makers name and model.

Now it offered me a really goofy resolution, something like 1700x1450, WAY to small for me, and I like small screens.

So I chose "other" and set it for 1280x1024 and hit apply

I THOUGHT that MDV used to test a video change, then if you didn't hit OK in 30 seconds (or so) it reverted back to what it was.

Well, this didn't.

So I got a black screen and nothing else.

Hard reboot, default choice on the menu is "linux" and it goes straight into a black screen.

Now if I manually choose (bare with me this is my memory here) linux noFB (I think)?

It boots to a bare, but usable desktop

2 questions.

Hello,

I am having trouble accessing my 'new' sata DVD burner - Pioneer DVR-215d. When I put in a disk, there is no indication of media being added (the USB type indicator in the icon bar at the bottom right of the KDE screen). I was able to manually mount the burner and read a CD today (but with read only capability), so I think it is my etc/fstab which I set up via the Control Center config tool for the CD/DVD burner. Could well be that I botched the setup - I used the advanced option, and now I cannot get back to the default setting. In any case, my etc/fstab is :

for /dev/sda1 :

UUID=c62375e0-359b-4cc0-9851-50b1facfcae0 / ext4 acl,relatime 1 1

# Entry for /dev/sda6 :

UUID=f0aa3e2c-febd-4caf-a01a-f891199cf8d2 /home ext4 acl,relatime 1 2

/dev/sr0 /media/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=utf8 0 0

/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,exec,flush 0 0

none /proc proc defaults 0 0

# Entry for /dev/sda5 :

UUID=76dfb0f9-fe29-4c1e-96ae-582e7c88d416 swap swap defaults 0 0

I'm guessing that I need to edit the /dev/sr0 line to include rw and auto (and maybe change user to users). Would this resolve my access issue? I did check write access in the advanced options of the configuration tool, as well as unchecked 'noauto', and clicked 'save to fstab', but after mounting the burner I ran 'mount' in console and it indicates ro and noauto for the burner.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. I am certainly no expert at this (obviously)......

Thanks -- Roger

I installed a DVD burner which the system recognizes - control center hardware manager sees it and I can configure it. TEAC DV-W524GS on sr0. "Allow every user to mount and unmount" is checked. The same 2010.2 worked fine on my old IDE DVD burner, but it seems to be having trouble on the sata DVD burner

The problem is that I can only seem to access the drive once. After I boot the system, I can insert a disk, the little usb type connection icon on the bottom right of the screen comes up, the device is identified, and it gives me the options for action on the device. This happens only once. If I remove the disk and insert another, then the USB icon comes up but the 'devices recently plugged in is blank'. I put in a DVD and tried to play it, but the application faulted out saying that I did not have access to the file. I am thinking it is not an access privileges issue, since I left su access on after using the control center and the problem still exists. I can also insert a memory stick into a usb slot and it is ignored. I guess any hot plugged device, after the 1st, is ignored.

My current guess is that it is a mount issue, but I don't know how to go about resolving it. Hopefully it is something really simple....

Hello,

Let me preface this by saying that this is my first motherboard upgrade, so I could be making the most simple mistakes......

I got a more current ASUS motherboard (P5K), and am trying to bring up my system. The MB will post and allow me into the ASUS bios control panel. I have the latest bios installed (correct for the CPU), and the CPU and memory are correctly recognized. Problem is that my IDE drives (hard drive with Linux, and DVD burner) are not recognized - I have no SATA drives. The IDE cable and master slave arrangement are the same as for my old ASUS board, and works fine with the old board. I figure either that I have not set up the bios correctly, or the IDE/SATA controller on the ASUS board is having trouble. Once I exit the bios, the system does seem to identify the HD as bootable - the Mandriva blue screen for 2010.2 comes on and the countdown happens, then the little loading icon spins on the bottom of the screen for a long time (don't hear the disk being read), and then a sizable error message (seemingly about not being able to find any devices or root).

Any suggestions or observations?? I have reinstalled the old MB so that I have internet access, so any testing would entail putting the new board back in (not too bad, but don't want to make a habit of it......)

Thanks -- Roger

Hello,

Hopefully the last question associated with my motherboard upgrade. I have a 150GB IDE drive that currently holds everything for the computer, including my upgraded to current Mandriva 2010.2. I am getting a 150GB SATA drive, and would like to migrate the contents of the bootable IDE drive to this SATA drive. Is this fairly simple, or should I wait until the next time I upgrade the OS (probably a year or two)? My objective is to minimize the time that I run with the current IDE to SATA drive converter/adapter that I am using now.

If the drive migration process is easy, instructions would be helpful (or a pointer to where the info can be found).

Hello,

Sorry about this second post on the graphics cards, but as I get more involved it becomes less clear..... I am currently running a Rage IIc AGP card. Can I switch over to a PCI card (I have extra slots) or is this not possible from a hardware/cpu perspective?? Since there do not seem to be any current performance AGP 1x cards being made anymore, if I can't switch it is finally getting time for a new computer....

Thanks -- Roger

PS - if the switch over is possible, any comments on my earlier post would be appreciated.....

Hello,

Getting ready for a new mother board, which has only 1 IDE slot. OK because I really only want to run a DVD burner/reader and a hard drive. I figured that I wanted the system to first read the DVD reader and then move to the hard drive, so I jumpered both as cable select, and then put the DVD reader at the end of the cable (master) and the drive in the middle (slave). The bios did not like that one little bit - said there was no master. I then jumpered the drive as master, and left the cabling and DVD jumper alone. The system boots fine now off the drive, and it seems that the system does a handshake with the DVD before the drive kicks in. I'm not sure that I got what I wanted (with regards to the DVD being actually tried first).

Is this setup correct, or do I need to also set the DVD as master? Can/should each device type have a designated master as far as the bios/IDE cable is concerned ?

Thanks -- Roger

Hello,

Looking to finally upgrade my graphics card (with the hope of a little improved system performance). Currently running a 3D Rage IIC. I read here that it is useful to go with Nvidia for compatibility benefits, and would like to go with something fairly current but not bleeding edge (no gaming requirements what-so-ever). The Sparkle GeForce 8400GS seemed like a good solution - has anyone had any experience with the card, or is there a recommended alternate vendor ?

Today, my Mandy 2010.2 system failed to boot. It has been fine since I installed it last Spring, and today, when I was not at home, it failed to boot with a bunch of ATA error messages. My family did not know what to do, so they just shut it off and told me when I got home.

I just looked at /var/log/messages and found about a dozen of the following sequences of errors over the previous two days:

I have posted this to hardware because that is what it looks like to me. However I have Googled some of these errors, and the some folks said that they fixed this with a kernel upgrade, so it may be software. Others say that it is indicative of a hard disk failure. Others have said it is due to a faulty ATA cable.

The disk is a Seagate Barracuda ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA hooked into an old Foxconn MOBO that I have forgotten the model number of. The Seagate drive was bought new last Spring to replace another drive that failed. The MOBO has been working OK for about 3 years now.

I jiggled the SATA cable on both the MOBO and the disk drive to reseat it, and the computer booted OK.

Does anybody recognize these errors and have any idea what might be the problem? Kernel issue? Failing disk drive? Noisy cable?

Thanks

Hello all.

I have recently had to replace my computer (the old one was dying) and so I had a unit built with a Radeon hd 6670 graphics card so that I can play some games I like. I am running 2010.2 powerpack which includes proprietary ATI drivers - as I understand.

I have not been able to configure my system to recognise this graphics card and it always defaults to 'vesa/fglrx' when I try to set it up.

Am I missing something here or should I be downloading the drivers directly from the ATI website?

Any replies welcome

Problem is that running XFdrake there is no ViewSonic VA902 in selection. The nearest item is ViewSonic VA800.

I select it and it seems for me that not all is ok, my screen is rather hard for my eyes,my eyes quickly becomes tired.

So I've compiled and installed lm_sensors (latest version) on my box (ECS GeForce 6100 PM-M2) and attempted to decipher the sensor names, but many are still a mystery.

If you're up to the challenge of a spot of detective work, read on...

Here's my "sensors" output:

My BIOS reports the following:

CPU Tcontrol: 40°C
System temperature: 34°C
CPU Fan Speed: 2360 RPM
CPU Vcore: 1.29 V
VDIMM: 1.84V

So the virtual adaptor temp1 is what the BIOS reports as "CPU Tcontrol" (overall temperature of the CPU die?)

In k8temp, temp1 and temp3 are misreporting core temperatures (IIRC, someone's written a shell script to correct this),

and temp2 and temp4 are non-reporting, so can be ignored (presumably the pins are there for the benefit of quad core Phenoms)

In it87, in0 is probably CPU Vcore, and in2 probably VDIMM.

temp1 may be CPU temp (i.e. should be reporting CPU Tcontrol)

temp2 is probably "System temperature"

temp3 is interesting - I didn't know I'd got another thermistor, so is it real or a fake?

Updating sensors3.conf with my findings results in this sensors output:

But what about the rest? Or the scaling formulae for the 5V and 12V rails?

The it87 section of sensor3.conf as supplied just labelled in8 as VBat. Full stop.

Aside: is it my imagination or do the alarm limits look rather suspicious?

Hi Iam running 2009.1 spring power pack, after using the(MCC)and updating the nvidia drivers and rebooting, now X does not start.

When in safe mode/console mode and I try to start X I get the error message "Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 180.51, but this NVIDIA driver component has version 256.35."

I have had this once before and managed to find a fix for this on Mandriva Bugzilla. I had kept a printout of this but lost it in a cleanup. I have been looking on the Mandriva Bugzilla site but as yet I can not find it.

The fix was to use urpmi in the command line to do the following:

Update media

Remove/uninstall all NVIDIA drivers

Install current NVIDIA drivers

then

Run XFdrake, configure card

startx/reboot

I am not sure if I have missed any steps in the above and what the actual command line structure for these commands are.

I have been running Mandriva since the days of Mandrake off and on for a while, and totally for the last 2 years, but I have been amiss in not learning how to use the command line more often. I have used it for various procedures and fixes but I am not very Fluent in it. (Rough would a better word)

Any help in the above would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have an MSI notebook with Mandriva 2010.2 on it, and am considering buying the USB 3G modem named "icon 461" from Nova Media, described here: http://www.novamedia.de/en/icon-461.html

On their website they announce a broad "linux compatibility" but with no details, and the salesperson I contacted has, well, left for gathering more information :) Moreover this product is recent...

Is there an experience here of finding/installing drivers for Mandriva for this "icon 461"?

(in addition the modem doubles as a GPS receiver, which would allow me to create a giant-screen, Openstreetmap-based GPS locator for my truck!)

I've been fighting a slow clock for ages, it comes and goes, just figured out the issue indirectly.

A few nights ago I was imaging a machine at work (backups) and noticed I was getting frequent USB resets for no apparent reason...

(using a 2010.2 ONE USB with partclone added, should be default)

Long story short, I turned off the default screen saver, and all was fine.

Tried the same fix with my main system at home that has given me headaches with mythtv not recording properly due to the clock being WAY off.

Turning the default screen saver to "blank screen" the problem is automagically gone.

Is there a bug in the default screensaver that causes frequent IRQ interrupts?

One of the fixes from the 2009 errata fixed it, I added "clocksource=jiffies" to the boot args and all seems OK.

I have an old HP Deskjet F380 combination printer/scanner and I am trying to install it on Mandriva 2010.2.

The printer works fine, but the scanner apparently is not supported. In the scanner setup tool it told me to select a model from a list that did not include the F380, but it had a generic selection "Most HP Combination" devices, which I selected. It then told me to configure the scanner using the printer setup.

The printer setup tool makes no mention of scanner setup, so I am stuck. It did have an optional box labeled "Duplex Installed", which I have not tried yet. Is that duplex printing, or something else? I don't really care about duplex printing on an old spit printer.

This scanner worked fine under Mandriva 2008.1.

Printers and scanners are black boxes for me, so any help on where to start looking would be appreciated.

Needed a new printer, picked up an Epson NX127 as Linuxprinting.org shows it as fully supported...

well... It apparently assumes a current version of cups, Gutenprint, iscan and foomatic.

Installed/updated Cooker and printer/scanner both worked once the avasys.jp rpms were installed.(has other showstoppers)

I installed/updated SUSE11.4 on a spare partition and installing the RPMs from avasys.jp (worked),

Unfortunately Mythtv is horribly hosed on both setups

(cooker kernel doesn't support v4l1 devices at the moment, SUSE recording playback simply doesnt, and I don't feel like fighting with it anymore)

So... I'm back to trying to get 2010.2 working again, painless install (only need to add "vmalloc=256M" for the nvidia card) fresh, ran printer setup, plugged in printer, system installed iscan 1.02 and the epson printing task, printer is setup and produces nothing but solid black prints, and gives a "ps2raster" failure, which I assume is the slid black page cause.

Install the Avasys rpms, selected the included ppd, restarted everything and nada, the print filter failed.

These rpm are for LSB3.2, perhaps an issue?

OK, so how do I gracefully update 2010.2 to ~current versions of cups, gutenprint, iscan and foomatic?

(Hint--- Even the versions in cooker are pretty ancient)

Hi all.

I am thinking of buying the named webcam but thought that I should get members views first

I have installed Skype and intend to experiment using it to contact my dear friends in Maine USA.

What other packages do I need to install as well ???. Even though it is a USB device, does it need any extra special drivers etc., ???.

Cheers. John.

I am looking for a simple MP3 player that will mount as a USB drive on my Mandy system so that I can drop music files on it and then play them. I would prefer that it have a replaceable (AAA) battery so that I won't have to toss out the device when the battery quits working.

I have searched linux-usb and Googled the question, but every device I find appears to be out of production. I just want to store a few songs to listen to as an aid to learning how to play them. I am not looking to create a huge library of material or buy things from tune stores. The Creative Technology, Ltd MuVo V100 is the sort of thing that I am looking for, but they appear to be no longer available.

Does anybody know of any USB players that are simple, relatively cheap, capable of playing standard format files, and work with Linux?

Thanks,

Where do I stop power management closing down the monitor(s)? I have as far as I know turned off all power management in KDE, BIOS. I have been pestered with this since 2010.1

As I have LCD monitors I have not used power management for quite some time. The annoying part is when watching video and the screen always blacks out at the vital point.

I know this is a newbie question, but I'm not a newbie. Getting older, and the memory is not what it was. Help will be appreciated. Thank you.

I know nothing about WLAN. Up till now I've had a fixed wired network and it's worked great. It went something like this:

Wall --- Modem --- Router --- Computer1 (Linux)
                     L------- Computer2 (WinXP)

So far so good. Now I've got a new flat and unfortunately the sockets are arranged such that the only place the modem can be is miles away from where the computers need to be. So I'm going to have to (reluctantly) setup some kind of WLAN link, I can't see any other way to do it.

The most obvious option is to add some kind of WLAN receiver to each of the two PCs, like this:

Wall --- Modem --- WLANRouter z z z Computer1 (Linux)
                               z z z Computer2 (WinXP)

where "z z z" is a wireless link. This means adding new bits to the PCs of course, and it seems those would either be external USB dongles or internal PCI cards, or perhaps even internal USB modules which might make things a bit neater. I would have to make sure though that those adapters were compatible with the older XP hardware and with the linux OS - can anyone suggest ways to ensure this would be reasonably painless? Anything I would need to bear in mind when buying those adapters?

A second option would be to get what I think is called a "wireless bridge", which would offer wired connections to the two PCS:

Wall --- Modem --- WLANRouter z z z Bridge--- Computer1 (Linux)
                                         L----- Computer2 (WinXP)

This might be a bit more expensive (and would be yet another box sucking power) but I have the feeling it might make the compatibility a bit easier, because the PCs just have wired networks as far as they're concerned. Am I right?

A third option might be to have a WLAN receiver on one of the PCs which would then offer a wired ethernet connection to the second PC, but even if that were possible that would mean that PC1 would have to be powered on for PC2 to have network access, so that wouldn't work.

So, can anyone offer any advice what would be the cheapest / easiest / neatest solution to this problem? And of course my next question would be for whatever kind of wireless link, how would I make sure that:

a ) Noone else can connect to my WLAN router (WPA encryption? MAC address filtering?)

b ) Noone can sniff what's going between my computers and the WLAN router (WPA encryption?)

c ) Noone can access my computers or my bridge

I realise that's a bunch of questions there but this is all new to me and there's a bewildering variety of products on sale. You guys for sure know how to make sometihng like this neat, reliable and secure, right? :D

HP CN509B Photosmart Premium eMFP

Mandriva 2010.1

I installed this as a network printer and have tried over ethernet and

wireless, as a local printer on USB, and printing by email. All work

very well and are easy to set up (CUPS localhost:631 and the front panel). The B109a

driver does a good job for documents and photoprints.

But, no luck with the scanner function. I gather, from this list,

that other people have had problems with similar HP devices.

I plugged it in on USB but xsane could not detect it although

the sane external backend is installed, I think (lib64sane-aio1) and

there is an hpaio entry in /etc/sane.d/sane.dll and also an

hpaio.conf file containing a single line:

usb 0x03f0 0x4811

sane-find-scanner can see it on the usb bus but scanimage -L fails to

list it. It looks like sane does not understand that the backend is

available, so what more needs to be done? Scanning with an Epson

Perfection on USB works fine so user permissions, etc. must be

alright. hp-setup does not see the scanner component either.

Thanks

According to this there is a Linux driver, but the WiFi is not yet operational. What can I do to fix it?

I cannot get the internal microphone to work on my Acer Aspire 1410. It does work in Windows 7, so I know the hardware is OK. I cannot get any recording in Mandriva 2010. I have opened kmix and ensured it is not muted, and I raised the mic and mic boost levels. I also twiddled the "front mic" vs "internal mic", but with no results.

When the mic levels are high and the mic is not muted, I get soft white noise from the speakers. Muting the mic drops this out. This happens regardless of whether front or internal mic is selected, and regardless of whether "Capture" is checked or not. I don't know if this is significant.

With front mic selected, when I playback my recording, I hear noise. With internal mic selected, when I playback I hear nothing at all.

One other potentially interesting thing. I have shown all of my channels, and while there is a slider for "front mic", there is not one for "internal mic". Again, I don't know if this is significant.

I would appreciate any tips and suggestions. I started by using Skype for testing the audio, but this was cumbersome, so now I'm using Sound Recorder.

Kernel is 2.6.31.12-netbook-1mdv. Same thing happened with desktop kernel; tried to change in case it made a difference.

I have a new Mainboard Gigabyte 790XT-USB3 and a Vantec NexStar USB3 Dual Bay Hard Drive Docking Station connected by a USB3 Cable.

When I have the cable plugged into a usb2 socket on the Mainboard I have the SATA II HDD appear in the Device Icon on the Panel as is expected and can be opened normally.

However when it is plugged into one of the USB3 Mainboard outlets, it usually does not appear. On a couple of occasions that it has appeared, when one of the partitions is clicked on to open it, the drive disappears from sight. Note that the USB3 is set to enabled in the bios.

Is there something I am missing here somewhere in the Bios setup or elsewhere ???.

Any ideas please.

I am running 2010.2 which was a clean install.

In the previous install which was also 2010.2, I had no trouble running the Scanner part of the device and the Printer has run AOK in both this and the earlier installs of this OS version.

The unit is HP PhotoSmart b109a-m and I have taken care of the models.dat file correction that was necessary and also ensured that lib64sane-hpaio1 is installed.
