I want to install Mandriva 2011 and I found this image:

http://ftp.icm.edu.pl/pub/linux/mandriva/official/iso/2011/Mandriva.2011.x86_64.1.iso'>http://ftp.icm.edu.pl/pub/linux/mandriva/official/iso/2011/Mandriva.2011.x86_64.1.iso

here:

http://ftp.icm.edu.pl/pub/linux/mandriva/official/iso/2011/

Problem is, that when I burned the image (successfully) and run it on on my PC M/B GA-MA770-DS3 with AMD2+ Dual core 6000+ 3.1 Ghz I got black screen as a result. First of all I boot the DVD, select either lunch or install and both procceses are freezed with a black screen after a while. Do I have incorrect instalation?

I found the images here:

http://api.mandriva.com/mirrors/list.php

searching in Europe. I could not found Mandriva 2012 or any newer version which would be full free. So this is the only mirror list I could found for Mandriva.

Can you suggest some different list or different image for Mandriva?

Hello all

I was recently given an old Presario sr1300an and I have been trying to install Mandriva on it but with little luck. It will accept Mandrake 9.1 ok but nothing later. It will read the core update disc for 2006.1 but not the main iso disc. The disc drive does not seem to even see a disc in the drive (with later distros). But it did reformat and install ok with XP.

Is this problem caused because this is an older machine, maybe the iso format has changed since Mandrake days or maybe the bios. Is there any easy way to get it to 'see' the later model discs or am I stuck with 9.1?

Any advice is welcome

Rowan

PS This will be a gift for my sister so it is not super critical but a later distro would be nice - and I have always been a Mandrake/Mandriva fan

I installed the iso file to a U.S.B. stick and booted into the liveCD option. Everything worked. I chose to install the operating system to a SATA hard-drive partition. I opted to install the GRUB boot loader to pclinuxos's root partition as I have a boot loader already in the MBR. I couldn't boot, however.

I then booted back into the liveCD option to try to install GRUB via the command line. I did:

(as root user)

Grub

find /boot/grub/stage1

root (hd1,7)

setup (hd1,7)

as the root partition is on sdb8. This did not work. I also tried

grub-install /dev/sdb8

Any ideas?

I have been running only Mandriva for years on PCs that I put together from components ordered from various sources. Haven't bought a box since 1992. -- Until 2 days ago!! Just could not get a better deal buying individual components + shipping, etc. Anyway, it is loaded with Windows 8 on a 1TB drive. Until I am sure I can get 2011 running on it correctly, I am not interested in wiping out the Windoze just yet. So, I bought an extra 1TB drive and installed it, downloaded MD 2011 and burned it to DVD. Went thru all the gyrations in the BIOS to allow me to boot from DVD and installed 2011. Install went fine with no issues. Problem came when I went to reboot!!

It would not boot into anything and the BIOS with UEFI (my first experience with this) just went into a 'Preparing to Correct Problems' loop that it never came out of. Disabled the UEFI and legacy loader complained there was not a bootable drive. I could choose and boot of the DVD all day but could get no further. Finally found that by disconnecting the new drive I could boot back into Windze... (Yea!)

It would appear to me (and I could be completely wrong) that the Windows Boot Manager does not recognize the MBR partitioned 2nd drive and fails (or tries to fix it) because of it on bootup. And since the main drive is GPT, Mandriva install writing a boot record to it doesn't work. I am currently downloading GParted Live in hopes that I can partition the 2nd drive as GPT to see if I can leave it connected and still have Windows boot properly. But, even if that is the case, I still don't have Mandriva!!

I'm thinking the other thing I can do is to disconnect the Windows drive, go about the Mandriva install on the 2nd drive and see if (using the BIOS Legacy (MBR?) boot feature) I can boot from the drive formatted by Mandriva install. If Mandriva works correctly, then I have no problem with slicking the Windows drive (or just leaving it disconnected).

Any of this sound reasonable or am I chasing the wrong goose?? :)

Thanks for any input!!

Mike

Hello all, this is my first post here.

I started using linux about 3 years ago, and have used it for all my work since then. I began, like many do, with Ubuntu, which is a good distro. I got into the distro-hopping habit, and tried various distros (including smaller ones like Chakra) before settling on OpenSuse, Mint, and Ubuntu on my machines. I had briefly tried Mandriva from a Live CD -- loved the look and feel, but there were some issues I didn't have time to work through then. But I always kept it in mind, since it is such a pretty distro, with the Rosa take on KDE adding something very unique.

A few weeks back, I decided to try Mandriva full time for a few weeks at least. I got the 2012 (Bennie Lomax) tech review. There are definitely a few rough edges which I had to work through, but once I did, the end result is really the best Linux experience I have had thus far. I'm really loving Mandriva. Unlike several other distros I have used, it is not a "KDE by another name" distro. It has its own distinctive way of doing things, and isn't that what Linux is all about?

I thought I would drop by here and say how appreciative I am of this fine distro, and that I wish Mandriva a very healthy future. I, for one, will surely use it for a long time to come.

Cheers everyone. :)

Dear friends

I am trying to understand how the 2011 install works. I am waiting

until the PowerPack is available but am a little concerned about the

status of GNOME. From what has been posted on the web it seems that

GNOME is not an install option, pretty frightening for somebody who

does not like KDE and does not know his way around it. GNOME is

supposed to be available from the repositories but that could mean

trouble for me. I have never attempted to install a complete desktop

environment and doing that from a KDE base is likely to make my hair

fall out. The other reservation I have is about GNOME 3. If that is

all that is available it would be better to stick to 2010.2 and GNOME

2 and lose out on some software upgrades.

So, what about GNOME?

Hi there,

I'm really new in Linux, totally stupid about it, but I'm loving this SO, so much stable and fast... Learning a lot here.

I'm using Mandriva 2011 updated and with all my apps installed, but in dual-boot with MS-W7.

I'm looking for a way to make my own recover cd/dvd, 'cause I'm almost quitting the boring Windows, and I want to reinstall my system in a full format... But I don't want to reinstall everything again, one by one.. all apps and update the system... once my internet is so weak and slow...

Sure my personal files are going to be backed-up in another place... But I need to backup my system, format my computer and reinstall completely, keeping it the same it was before I format..

Is that possible in Mandriva 2011 making a bootable disk as cd or dvd??

If yes, how do I do it?

I was looking for it in the Foruns, but what I saw was from 2004 and I guess it doesn't work on Mandriva 2011.

Remember that I'm a starter in Linux.

Sorry if I was too long.. my English is not so good.. I hope you understand!

Thank you so much!

I had 2010 installed OK, but when I tried to upgrade to 2011 it failed and wouldn't boot.

I've re-installed 2010, but now the option to suspend to disk is not available (which I had selected for when I puch the power button). I have no notes of doing anything special, so how can I re-enable suspend to disk again?

Hi Guys,

Im converting over to Mandriva 2011, and am having some trouble installing or running live CD.

Firstly the gear:

Dell Laptop - Studio XPS 1640

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8600 2.4ghz

6gb ram, 500gb HDD

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670

Currently running Win7 x64, which i plan to format off the hdd when installing..

The problem:

When booting off live CD i get the option screen install or live. if i choose install it goes through untill the load screen (light blue with Mandriva logo thinking circle) after a couple of minitues the screen goes completly grey! if any key is pressed including alt ctrl f1, the screen goes black.

When live option is selected, once the loading screen has finished the entire screen goes white with colourful vertical lines, i can make out were the mouse is as there is a 1cm squre slightly defined on the white screen.

Also i have checked the DL, and re burnt the CD in a slow write and verified.

Is this a known problem with my graphics card? im disapointed as Mandriva looks like the linux install for me..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if it is expected that upgrading from 2010.2 into 2011...

is done by means of the update notification applet ??

Mandriva's website shows:

You can also upgrade on-line. What that means is that the Mandriva update notification applet,

Mandriva Online, will notify you that a new Mandriva Linux release (2011) is available, and ask

if you wish to upgrade. If you agree, the upgrade will be carried out from within your running

system, just like a regular system update.

Has any one already seen the update coming up through the applet...?

I am having a big issue when I tried to load the Mandriva 2011 ISO as well as the liveUSB on my Laptop.

First I download the 1.7GB Mandriva.2011.586.iso file, and try to load into a brand new Kingston 2GB USB.

I did a dd if=file.iso of=/dev/sdx bs=8M

After that it started loading, and took almost all night since I went to bed and found it was done by the next morning. So I load it to the Laptop, and nothing.

It just skip the USB and went straight to the HD. So it seems isolinux or something wasnt booting. Tonight I tried it again this time through the Mandriva_seed.sh file, which loaded the image and took a total of 5.25hrs (Too much) and finally got it to get recognized by the Laptop

However it take ages to actually do something. I just see an ISOLinux ... legend and that's it.

The USB seems to be working since a green light appear but there is no more vmlinuz or other process being displayed in the screen.

I would appreciate to get some insight into what's going on. My laptop is not that old, so the transfer rate should be okay. I have transfer large files with a good transfer rate. (1GB movies and such).

Ok, this is a fairly common issue (at least it USED to be) and at one time I knew how to resolve this without thinking about it.

but gosh darn it, my machine has been running so well the last 2 years I have lost my skillz (and my notes)

Something happened yesterday. Dont know what, but in the midst if a network file copy the pc shut down.

reboot, find lots of HD open file errors, repaired and cant login.

Well its tmie to do some other things so I get my MDV 2011.1 x64 dvd load it in and reinstall.

everything goes fine until I reboot and then I get an error (the exact wording of which escapes me), but f memory serves me is about the GRUB installation not being correct.

For me, its an easy mistake to make, I have 8 sata HD's installed 2 PATA's and 4 USB's so sometimes I get 'lost'

Anyway, I know that there used to be a "simple" set of steps that would allow me to boot from Puppy (for example) manually edit the GRUB and then all was well/

Anyone have a list of said steps>?

I dont even mind manually rebuilding the file, I just can NOT remember how.

I know that "dirty" reinstals are frowned on in Linux, but really 200GB would be a lot to have to 'start over)

thanks for all your suggestions.

I cannot reach the console but it seems like the bootprocess continue to the end.

I have been using Kmail for years. All my mail contacts are in the address book, or at least they were. Since I have migrated from 2008.1 to 2010.2, KDE 4.4, I cannot get the address book to work at all. It won't even run. I get cryptic errors about nepomuk and Akonadi servers and "D-Bus session bus went down - quitting".

What the heck is all of that? I have no idea what all that means or what is is for. I just want my address book back.

I cannot "automatically migrate" my kmail accounts because I had to do a clean installation due to my outdated previous version. It appears that there is no other migration path available at all. I have copied config files and copied address book folders and set up accounts again manually and on and on and on. Nothing works. It just won't run. I copied ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/ to ~/.kde4/share/apps/kabc/ and that has no effect. The Akonadi trouble shooting page says to "open the Akonadi Console", but no clue how to do that. It says, "Use krunner, Alt-F2". What the heck does that mean? It says, ""akonadiconsole" konsole". What the heck does that mean?

I think that I now hate Kmail and all of the KDE apps that no longer work or run. I installed kdewebdev to get Quanta Plus back and it is not there. What have they done to KDE? Nothing works.

I have no need for fancy, floating 3D widgets and cubes with pictures of desktops on them. They seem to have replaced basic functions with frills that I do not need. KDE is as bloated as fnWindows with the same disastrous results.

I am looking for other tools to migrate out of KDE to something that might continue to work in the future. I think I might go to Thunderbird for email and Bluefish for web development. It will take me hours of work to move stuff over because there are no migration tools other than the manual copying of stuff.

Sorry for the rant, but I have just spent two days trying to do the simple job of migrating my email from the previous Mandy to the current one, and I have failed to get it done. I am beginning to believe that it is hopeless. This ought to be easy. No wonder people are bailing out of KDE 4 in droves to run to Gnome. And from what I hear, the Gnome people are following in their footsteps with their own version of the Bloated Desktop. Ick!

Thoughts, helpful hints, dopeslaps, ideas are all welcome, but I think I am done with this bloatware. There might be a Mac in my future.

Im trying to install it on my partners PC which is currently running Windows XP and it seems to be having major problems. It gets so far and stops, unable to go any further it seems. Looking at the verbose, it gets up to HAL daemon and says [FAILED] then freezes.

Any help gratefully received, it is starting to drive me crazy!

Sorry if this is a silly question, but the Mandriva site is very vague on how the download of the PowerPack works.

How is the download limited, by time or number of downloads?

Can I download both the 32 and 64 bit versions. That is what they ship when they sell the DVD's.

I am doing this on a computer that is slowly dieing and I need to get something working on it that is stable. Soon.

I have downloaded the 2010.2 One CD, but last time I installed using the 2008.1 One CD and it took me a month to get it working having gone through 6 kernels and numerous attempts to get the Nvidia drivers working. I thought that buying a PowerPack might speed things up.

Is the "Free" DVD usable in less than a month of messing around?

Hello,

Just set up 2010.2. I am using the system as a single user desktop at home. How do I set it up so that I don't have to boot every time, and that I go directly to my desktop??

Thanks -- Roger

Hello,

Looking to download 2010.2 (as an upgrade to my current 2008.1). I did purchase a DVD for 2010.2, but was 'missing files', which is a bug or mirror problem which I read has been resolved (but doesn't help my DVD much). In any case, is creating my own DVD as easy as downloading to desktop, burning a DVD, and proceeding with the install?? Is there a DVD burner recommended (hopefully included in my 2008 free)?

Finally, is it likely that an 'upgrade' from my 2008 using the 2010.2 DVD would work? I realize some files may be missing (downlevel versions from 2008 used instead?). I assume that those downlevel files can be updated once my 2010.2 is running?

Thanks for any tips or suggestions. I read that 2010.2 is mostly bug fixes and updates from 2010.1, but if 2010.2 is not ready for prime-time I would also be interested in knowing.....

Thanks -- Roger

Hello,

First, I don't know if I have posted in the right section, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Second, this problem is both Windows and Linux relates, so I'm not sure if it is OK to ask for help here.

Now:

Because of my job I HAVE to use Windows 7. The problem is that it broke down on its own and now I have to reinstall it. That would be simple, but the problem is that I need that damned 100mb partition and it won't create it if there are other partitions in the HD.

So here comes the trouble, I need to reinstall Win7 and that annoying partition, but I have to delete Mandriva as well.

I have an idea: I could make an image of the Mandriva partition and then delete everything, next, I would install Win7 (it'd create the 100mb partition) and then recreate the entire partition layout I had before. Finally, I would try to replant the Mandriva partition (from the image) into the same partition so that it would not notice that it was moved around. Do you think this would work or is there a better way to do it? My fear is losing my Mandriva installation (not just the files) or restoring Win7 without being able to access Mandriva ever again.

Help please...

Edit: nevermimd, if anyone is ever in the same situation as I go here:

It can be done from Windows without deleting Mandriva or touching it at all. The only problem will be that Windows tends to kill GRUB when you reinstall, but you can restore it using the installlation disc.

Hi,

I have had an unexpecting result attempting to upgrade from 2010 to 2010.1 (KDE versions) in this fashion:

1) removed 2010.0 media sources from MCC

2) added 2010.1 media sources via Easy URPMI

3) used the terminal command: urpmi --auto-update

4) restart

The boot menu listed Mandriva 2010 Spring which was a great sign. However, it appears KDE did not fully upgrade.

There no icons in the menu. There is no "Configure your Desktop" option anywhere. Right click on desktop does nothing.

The task bar and menu look very minimalistic.

Here is picture of the desktop:

Any suggestions?

Thank You in advance,

Hi,

I want to upgrade from 2010 to 2010.1.

I am running KDE One.

MCC is informing me the upgrade is available but if I attempt to upgrade via that path the choices are limited to Free and Powerpack.

In the past I have upgrading by deleting my media sources and then using Easy URPMI to add media sources for the newest version of Mandriva. I am thinking about going this path again however I do not see 2010.1 as a choice in Easy URPMI. Will 2010.1 be added? If so when?

Thank You,

Grub, shorewall and mandi RPMs are all in the hard disk folder I copied off the DVD. What should I do now? System: Thinkpad T21 laptop. Thanks.

Mandriva 2010 Upgrade

Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me how easy it is to upgrade from Mandriva 2010.0 to the new Mandriva 2010.1.

I know currently it's not out yet, but I'd like to know how easy/difficult this process is.

It is the first time I've used Mandriva, I find it absolutely brilliant.

I just simply like to know how straight forward it is to stay up-to-date with new Mandriva releases.

I'm currently running Mandriva 2010.0 One (32-bit)

I have purchased the 2010 Powerpack and will install on a 70gig hard drive with XP.

I got a little confused with the installation and may have made a wrong entry somewhere - the installation is not yet complete...

I can resize my hard drive giving approx half to XP and half to Mandriva.

I had previously used Mandrive and it had set up the directories automatically but for some reason I am asked to set up the directories individually.

Can you advise what directories I need to get started and how much space to allocate....

or would I be better cancelling the installation and starting from the beginning again?

Thanks

Good morning... afternoon... evening...!

I have the following partitions:

/home 85GB

/ 7.8GB

swap 3.8 GB

/media/hd 135 GB

I ran the upgrade for 2010.1 and IIRC the install failed due to not enough space in /usr/bin

I took the default URPMI folder to save the install files.

New update packages now also fail. Apparently not enough space on /.

Where did I go wrong, and how can I fix it.................?

As always, thanks for the help.

have successfully upgraded 2010.0 to 2010.1, but after rebooting seems to have lost monitor colors

the screen remains pale / hardly colors / looks like as watching through a thick vale .

monitor settings though are ok -- recognizes monitor type / resolution is ok.

have rebooted all available kernels, but with same result.

have checked in Windows, but there colors are ok.

have tried with command (mdkapplet -upgrade-helper --new_distro_version=2010.1) to get perhaps a new download,

but after downloading some files, system says upgrade is ok / should reboot system -- but result is same // no colors, etc.

Any one any idea what do do to restore color setting on the system // now it seems not to really recognize colors, only very vague. ??

----

Noticed that when downloading the files for the upgrade, the upgrade helper at the very end seemed to have crashed,

as a msg. "upgrade helper crashed / apologizing for inconvenience" appeared.

So have the feeling not all files were actually downloaded / installed at the end.

However when I retry to upgrade using the command line, some files are being downloaded and then the system says

that the upgrade is successful and should reboot the system.

Is there some way to 'mis lead' the system that no upgrade took place and than some how be able to do all of the

upgrade install all over again ?

Please advise,

ps. when possible please advise to my mail account / so I can read at work as this screen is a no go this way.....

THANKS
