Downloaded MCNLive Toronto ISO, followed the instructions and got everything on to an 8Gb flash drive.

When I boot it in the laptop it asks for a root password at the bottom and when I give "boot" as instructed, I am told that it could not find the kernel and goes ahead and loads me as a "guest".

When I go to do anything that requires root privileges, nothing works as it will not accept "boot" as the answer to its needs.

Hi,

I'm using Pendrivelinux, but as far as I read, it is essentially the same as MCNLive, so I'm asking here. (Pendrivelinux has no forums, support channel or anything like that)

My stick is a normal FAT32 with a couple of Windoze programs on it, PortableFirefox among others. It saves its profile on the stick in a subfolder. I also have Pendrivelinux on it, which has its own Firefox. I now tried to symlink the Linux Firefox profile folder to the FirefoxPortable profile folder. This would probably work flawlessly, but under Linux, the user account cannot directly write to the mounted FAT32 stick and thus to the FirefoxPortable profile folder. Since it is FAT32, the permissions can't be changed.

So I tried remounting it with umask=000. No change. I tried uid=500 and gid=100 (refers to the 'guest' user and 'users' group), but the stick simply refuses to get mounted differently. All the files on it -ALWAYS- belong to root with the same permissions that prohibit users from writing on them. root himself has no problems with writing.

What's the matter here? Is the vfat kernel module or the mount command broken? Is there some special kind of vfat module that doesn't understand umask, uid or gid? Is there something intercepting the mount and mounting it differently? For the record, 'mount' shows the drive with mounted with -my- settings.

I understand that the risk of a user writing to the loopfile or squashfs file directly is big, but I am well aware of what I'm doing. Is this intentional? How do I fix it?

On a related note, are there other distributions that work similiar to this? (Exchangeable base squashfs image + persistent loopfile that work on top of a FAT32 stick)? I'm open to test other things :)

Have been using PendriveLinux with mcnlive.loop for while and enjoy its functionality. One problem I have is when I need to increase the size of the mcnlive.loop file. I've used the graphical utility to create a new larger mcnlive.loop and have also used the following (after backing up original mcnlive.loop file first):

dd if=/dev/zero of=<location of mcnlive.loop file> bs=1M conv=notrunc count=1 seek=2500 (2.5 GB versus original 2.0 GB)

losetup /dev/loop1 <location of mcnlive.loop file>

e2fsck -f -y /dev/loop1 (some errors appear, but don't seem significant. Use -y to automatic fix errors)

resize2fs /dev/loop1

e2fsck -f /dev/loop1 (no further errors appear)

losetup -d /dev/loop1

Check of mcnlive.loop file with du -sh mcnlive.loop shows new size in place. Use of

mkdir -p testdir

mount -o loop <location of mcnlive.loop file> testdir

and same with original backed up mcnlive.loop file in same above manner to different mount directory, but find contents of both appearing to be the same (all files, ownership, and permissions same).

Booting up in persistent mode with newly increased mcnlive.loop file doesn't seem to work as I am booting into non-persistence mode. Copying backup mcnlive.loop file back into place and booting up persistence mode is fine with all changes in place.

As a further test, with newly increased mcnlive.loop file mounted and the original backup file mounted in differnet mount directory, removed all contents from large mcnlive.loop file and used:

cp -av /path/to/originalbackupfile/* /path/to/increasedmcnliveloopdir/

After all files copied and checked, umounted both and attempted to reboot into persistence mode (again with no success).

After above, found /usr/local/bin/mkmcnlive-loop script, but I believe same will develop after reading through script.

While it seems possible to increase size, is there any way to ensure changes made previously are retained or to copy all changes back over so that the newly increased mcnlive.loop file will boot up in persistent mode with changes retained?

Thank You

I'm running MCN Live 2007.1 on a USB Microvault. Everything woks as expected except the resolution.

Apon first running the resolution wizard it asked me if I wanted to use the 915 drivers and I said yes.

The resolution could now be changed to 12x8. Great I thought. I shutdown the session and rebooted into it today

and I'm back to 12x7 and It wont allow me to change it. I tried specifying different drivers and configurations in Harddrake

and I end up with a mirrored version of my screen and a rainbow of colors under the taksbar panel.

My video card is an Intel 945GM and I would appreciate any help.

I am an newbie to Linux so excuse me if I'm asking a dumb question. Since picking up Linux several weeks ago, I've found answers to most of my questions on-line. I've done some searching on this topic and can't seem to find the answer. This one's got me stumped.

I installed MCN Live to a USB drive. To make changes (like adding a printer which I didn't do before remastering), I used the boot code "livecd persist" and made the changes. From what I read, those changes are saved in the mcnlive.loop file.

If I want to make those changes permanent (so I don't have to use the "livecd persist" boot code), I think I have to recreate the persistent loop (MCN Live Menu --> "create persistent loop"). When I do this I get the error "start the live system without the boot code 'live persist.'"

If I restart on a normal boot, my changes from the "live persist" session are gone. So they're not there for me to create the persistent loop. If I make the changes again at this stage and then "create persistent loop" the process is successful but my changes are not there when I reboot normally. And if I reboot with the "livecd persist" boot code my changes are also gone - in effect I've gone back to the system I installed with the remastered CD.

However, I find that if I make changes in the "livecd persist" boot code, I can get back to them only if I boot with the "livecd persist" boot code.

So my question - how do I make the changes to the USB drive permanent so I don't have to use the "livecd persist" boot code all the time? What am I missing?

however, the scripts are , obviously, not interchangable

maybe you can answer a few questons i've always wondered.

1) Why the change from zenity to kdialogs?

2) is PCLOS 2008 actually closer to 2008 than 2007.1?

I note a newer Kernal, but lipstick on a pig still makes it a pig the question gets asked in the PCLOS forum a lot but i've never seen a clear answer

i really am trying to learn for my class, so anything you can point me to i'm eager to learn.

i have found some base info on zenity and kdialogs, i just havent had the chance to go through it all.

Ok guys & gals I apologize ahead of time if the answer to this has been posted else where, but I was unable to find it via board searches and google searches:

How do I change the user accounts in MCNLive? Basically I would like to remove the guest account, disable the automatic login and create my own user account. I can do most of this through the Mandriva configure your PC option, however after removing the guest account I get an error when I startup MCN the next time, probably because it is trying to automatically load the guest account which no longer exists. When I try to adjust the automatic login via the mandriva system option, I get the error that there is no bootloader installed, probably because it is running via usb and there is no bootloader on the HDD. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all.

First at all - sorry for my english, it's the first time i write on english-speaking forums.

I use MCNLive Toronto on USB flash in persistent mode, loop file is 2Gb.

Last time i have an error when shutdown/reboot system like this:

/etc/rc6.d/S01reboot: line 18 /dev/loop0 - permission denied

cannot umount /dev/loop0 - device is busy

it repeats some times about loop1 than about loop0, after all unmount does and system restarts.

What is this? I can't understand if problem is an attempt to unmount a loop while some process read/write to it or, really, problem is in permissions? But /etc/rc6.d/S01reboot is a symlink to /etc/init.d/halt which is executed under root, isn't it?

Maybe some people had the same problem and have a solution?

UPD: Sorry, no one has a similar problem or my english is too bad?

Hi,

I've tested my MCNLive USB on my college's computer, with the "persistent mode" activated, but I've realized that every time that the system boots, it is possibly created a kind of "history file" containing a hardware list of the specific computer.

I concluded this because, when I came back home, I ran MCNLive on my own pc and the system tried to find a network card of my college's computer. Then, it was showed a "[FAILED]" message on the boot screen. Although this error appears, the system could start normally.

The problem is because that message is showed every time I initialize MCNLive. I wanna know how to avoid this and have a true portable Linux. Does anybody have a solution?

Just installed Delft, fantastic, all went very smooth and works great well done guys n gals.

Did a shieldsup test and the default install left all ports open, so this test failed

big time.

Ok, i`m assuming that Delft needs a fat32 partition to allow it to boot, so as this is

a windows based partition does this not allow malicious code to run and infect the

OS as it does in Windows?

Is it possible for the Delft OS to access and write / save to a EXT2 partition on the

same usb stick for the added security that Linux offers( file permissions ect )

Any MCNLive security related links anyone knows of would be very much appreciated.

Can anyone help me with this problem: I have sucessfully installed MCNLive Toronto on a USB flashdrive, and it is very good. Hower my ADSL speed have dropped to below average dial-up rate. I have a Netcomm NB5+2 Modem/Router, and an AMD Athlon 3500 PC. The ADSL speed is normal on the Windows (excuse me) OS which is installed on a SATA hard drive. If there is any help from someone who knows far more than me on this I would be very grateful.

I searched but only found 1 thread related but I wanted to ask the question in a slightly different way. Forgive me if it is discussed in detail somewhere else.

I am a brand newbie to Linux. I have downloaded Mandriva Toronto. I have burned the image to a CD and I intend to setup a USB flash boot.

My question. I do not want my hard drive to get written to under any circumstances. I have it set up running Windows and I don't want to damage the installation and would be most .

comfortable knowing that Linux will not write (even as scratch pad) to my Hard drive.

Is the normal default operation for Toronto running off of a CD or USB flash to not write to the HD? There are several options when i first put in the CD and this is not the same as the Mandriva version I tried yesterday. What options, if any, allow this version of Linux to write to the hard drive? (Knowing this will enable me to avoid these options)

Just to be clear I do not want anything written to my Hd. At least not until I understand things more.

Thank you

I'm running my own remastered version of MCNLive from a USB stick, but i now want to change the way it mounts my drive to include the noatime option (which apparently reduces the writes, and improves the life of the flash memory).

I have tried editing the fstab of the system when running from USB, but i noticed each time i reboot, the fstab is overwritten (autogenerated by HWDetect?).

Is there any way to change this? do i have to reconfigure HWdetect and reroll another image?

Thanks.

however , does it use the latest NTFS-3g driver ?

It would be used to get the data from crashed windows computers, in the past I tried this

before but always ran into the problem of "unclean" ntfs drives....

I also had problems with computers with ati cards (x800) , just would not work on them.

Hi,

I am new to MCNLive and though I love it out of the box I still would like to make some changes. The problem I am seeing is after I remove a package, it is actually making the image larger. I am using the package manager to configure the packages and if I select a package, it shows the size of the files down at the bottom.

Selected: 0B / Free Disk Space: 600MB

So when I select say Filezilla. it shows "Selected: 11MB" and drops the disk space by 11MB. But if I select a package to remove, I get the exact same thing and instead of freeing up disk space, removing packages actually USES disk space. So no matter if I add or remove packages, it eats up space.

Another thing I noticed is that after I remove a package, I can still launch it from the menu. I wanted to remove all Koffice programs and add OOO instead. It went through the motions of removing everything but I noticed the icons were still listed in the main menu. Of course my curious nature got the best of me so I tried it and Boom!, Kword opened without a hitch even after I removed it.

So I was just wondering if these were just anomalies since everything is in RAM atm and will be fixed once I start the remaster process, or am I doing something wrong? Any guidance would be most appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Hello,

I just have discovered and installed MCN Live Toronto on my computer. It works quite well - but there is only one problem, which I couldn't resolve with my little Linux knowledge.

Starting the system with the live-Cd MCN finds all other harddisks (hda1,5+6/hdb1,5+6 with Windows). After having installed it on harddisk it only recognizes its own linux-partition (hdb7+8), but not the other partitions. I have had a look into the fstab-file and in fact there are no other partitions. Then I changed the fstab as root, adding the other hda and hdb infos by hand - but MCN still didn't accept or show the other partitions. Next I've copied the fstab-file from the live-installation (which shows all partitions), and integrated it into the harddisk installation, but MCN didn't accept it either .

Does anyone has an idea how I could convince MCN to get contact to the other partitions? Thanks in advance...

Hi,

I am a totally newbie in using Linux. I am very very happy with using MCNLive Toronto on a 4Gb USB and a laptop Dell D620.

I received recently a new Dell D630 laptop which includes the new Intel Mobile Platform Santa Rosa : GM965 with the GMA X3100. Unfortunately, Toronto/MDV 2007.1 appears not to include the latest Intel drivers for that platform. As a result, with the generic vesa driver, I don't manage to get a better screen resolution thant 1024x768 despite the fact that the panel can display in 1280x800.

As I read that Chris needs at the very least a big break (Thank you so much, Chris, for the tremendous work on MCNLive :D ) so that the next MCNLive based on MDV 2008 won't be released before a while, I am looking for an easy way to add the latest Intel drivers for Santa Rosa to my Toronto.

Can anybody help on that ?

Happy new year

After teaching a class in networking where I had run a custom designed, forms-based self-assessment system, running through a web interface and backed into a MySQL database, I had a need to present this data to "the powers" above me.

I looked at various options and settled on the live-cd as a means of presenting this data. But found that what was available didn't suit my requirements. In my search for solutions, I came across MCNLive and, although it didn't have any of the applications I needed for my particular purposes, it was the perfect base on which to build what I needed.

After trying to (unsuccessfully) get the Apache server working properly, I switched tactics and went for a 3rd party solution with XAMPP. This solved my problem and allowed me to continue to create what I needed.

I have to give full credit to chris b. for her work on these scripts and I also acknowledge bookie and mindwave for their work in getting the scripts to work from an installed Mandriva Linux (yes bookie, I was wrong, those notes you sent turned out to be very helpful after all ;) ).

So, in the true spirit of the open source community, I present Fido-X Web, a totally new live web server/development environment combining Mandriva Linux, XAMPP and MCNLive scripts.

This is still under development, and the documentation is incomplete (I'm still writing it) but, it works! I'm making it available so that I can continue to develop this project.

You can get it at http://www.fido-x.net/.

Let me know what you think of it. Let me know what it needs. Available in English only, but other languages could probably be included in a later release.

Regards, Phydeaux.

well if you've seen any of my past posts you know that one of my objectives was to create a system that i could use as a live DVD and a restore dvd all in one swoop.

the idea being that when (not if) I blow the system up i just pop in the dvd, reboot, reinstall to HD and away we go.

for 2007.1 this has worked AMAZINGly well.

the OTHER idea, was that when i upgraded my hardware (which i do about once a year or so, i could just pop the dvd into the new pc and reinstall to the HD and away we go.

well this weekend I went from an intel duo core 3.4GHZ system to and AMD x2 5.6GHZ system with a gigabit lan and a PCI-E 256MB vid card plus 4GB of ram.

bought a new 500gb hd, slapped it in, put my dvd in, that I had JUST created on my old system, booted up created a 60GB "/" partition and ran the HD install script.

Everything went well (if not a little faster!) went to reboot, and got a kernel panic stop.

So I started over, tried again, no go.

It APPEARS to me anyway, that the HW differences between my old intel duo core setup, and my new AMD setup if FAR to different to support a proper HD install.

So I did my minimal 2007.1 install (still DF’s to 3.2 GB) and will start to rebuild from my own process (http://www.thehess.org/Rollyourown1.html)

This may be self evident to a lot of folks, I just think that ots interesting that the live DVD works and runs AMAZINGLY quick, but that I couldn’t use THAT to do a HD install.

Oh well something else for the informationals.

I am now connected to the Internet via the USB adapter mentioned in the subject line. First, I would note that the manufacturer's web site is somewhat misleading, as the drivers shown for this USB device include a Linux driver with the Ralink RT73 chipset. This is wrong, just open the Windows driver folders and you'll see this device uses the Realtek 8187 chipset. I bought the USB adapter for $5 (USD) so I couldn't complain much, although I expected to get a Ralink gizmo.

But no problem in the end for me. I am currently using MCNLIve "Delft" running from a USB drive (A nice arrangement, and I am looking forward to trying out the "Toronto" distro, as well as other Mandriva versions, soon.) The USB adapter was easily installed by using the ndiswrapper selection in the Mandriva Control Center, and selecting the Windows 98 driver after mounting the CD that came with the adapter. I haven't tried the other drivers, but a previous Internet search suggested the Win98 drivers as best. The rest of the install went very smoothly, and I was on the Net within a few minutes. My router is already set up for WPA, and this was all set up pretty automatically. I didn't need to enter any IP address, etc...

First impressions: the signal strength indicator shows a very low signal strength, but I usually get a strong signal using WinXP and this device. It doesn't seem to affect the connection, so maybe it's not correct. The device gets warm, but it seems to be OK. I believe the same basic USB adapter is available branded under other names and it is inexpensive.

After spending many evenings trying to get my realtek 8185 PCI card to run under Linux, the ENUWI-G2 was very easy with MCNLive. I suspect it wouid be OK with other Mandriva derived distros. Good Luck!

Next challenge: the Realtek 8185 card. Here I suspect that the supplied drivers are the real issue, the Windows XP ones won't load in ndiswrapper and the built-in R8180 drivers don't work, either.

that's all for now

Linux newbie, I am using a scandisk 4 gb USB and love it. I have used the max loop image of 2GB which is fine, but I can't save files like kwrite, etc to the USB. I have over a 1.4 of free space but it says.

I've been playing about with Linux for a few years now so I'm not a "noob". However, I have never had the need to create a live cd until now and in this area I am a "noob".

While there are many live distros that have some of the software I need, there appear to be none that have all the software that I need (MCNLive is no exception), so I decided to create my own. I do understand that MCNLive is intended to be a desktop system, but any Linux can be converted to a server. I chose MCNLive because it looks great and includes the necessary tools to create a live cd.

I've been playing about with this for over a week now with no success. I first installed MCNLive Toronto to my hard disk so that I can install the necessary software. This is where the problems started. First was the "broken pipe" and "segmentation fault" while creating the initrd.gz file (a minor issue that doesn't affect the build - easily resolved by stating "--splash=no" on the command line). The second problem (which caused the build process to fail) was in creating the compressed filesystem, the cause of this problem is the fact that the kernel installed by the live-install process does NOT support the squashfs filesystem, while the kernel on the live cd does provide support for this filesystem.

So, my question is - How to I create a live cd from my installed system?

Thanks for any help (in advance).

I am so happy! I installed Delft on a usb stick ... then I used ndiswrapper to get my broadcom wifi working ... after a couple of false starts, it all went really well. Amazing ... I've never had wifi success with any other distro (well, except with PuppyLinux). I'm really impressed.

However, I'm a total newbie and I will probably need simple tips on how to change some desktop and hardware settings. Hope someone here can help. I'll play a bit more with the install I have and then probably get back to this forum.

Hello folks!

First let me apologize to you all as I am a certified Linux n00b. I am not, however, an idiot, I am simply (mostly) ignorant to the ways of Linux.

That being said, I would like to say I LOVE MCNLive, and I am (as are others) anxiously awaiting the release of MCNLive based on Mandriva 2008.

SO here're my problems:

I have succesfully burned Toronto and installed it to my USB flash drive. I am running off of it right now, in fact. I am running on a work-issued Thinkpad T60. But two problems are causing me much annoyance:

1. I can't adjust resolution! When I go to Display settings (by right-clicking the desktop and selection "Configure Desktop...", my only options are 800x600 or 640x480. As you can imagine this is very bothersome. So I loooked around and found various suggestions to modify the xorg.conf file. Here is the section that seems to be controlling possible resolutions, and it seems that I should have the option of 1024x768 regardless of color depth (in fact, I haven't been able to figure out where to find the color depth settings).

EndSection

   Driver "fbdev"
   Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "screen1"
   Device "device1"
   Monitor "monitor1"
   DefaultColorDepth 16

   Subsection "Display"
       Depth 8
       Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
   EndSubsection

   Subsection "Display"
       Depth 15
       Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
   EndSubsection

   Subsection "Display"
       Depth 16
       Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
   EndSubsection

   Subsection "Display"
       Depth 24
       Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
   EndSubsection
EndSection

When I look at MCC hardware, it correctly identifies my graphics card as the Radeon Mobility X1400, so why doesn't show supported resolutions in the GUI?? And in this, when I adjust video card settings, it shows the resolution as 1024x768 16bpp. Why are there are two (different) resolutions shown?? And why would it say the

2. This may be related, but 3D Desktop Effects are disabled. This is a relatively minor item, but I did try out Mandriva 2008 One LiveCD and it worked beautifully (resolution was higher, 3D effects worked, etc). I actually *really* liked the Metisse effects too...

Also, when I make changes to the settings, it seems like they are not in effect when I reboot! I thought that since this was running from USB flash, that you would be able to maintain a customized setup?

I apologize for all the newbie questions, but I have searched through the forums and I couldn't find anything that really helped...

Thanks (in advance) for your help and I really appreciate the work you've put into making the MCNLive distro!!
