When chris:b ceased maintaining MCNLive, she relinquished control of www.mcnlive.org. The site was subsequently reinstated by person or persons unknown, but not maintained, so is now redundant.

Please ignore all references to the old site: for the latest news, go to www.mcnlive.info.

As Chris has many posts on the forum, I have taken the liberty of amending the link in her signature - she has disabled her pm and email account.

MCNLive Kris - BETA/RC

After a few years of silence around MCNLive, here we are again with a brand new MCNLive release, based on Mandriva 2010.0!

It won't have all the nice features you might remember from MCNLive, but the most important things are there. Copy2ram is present, remastering on-the-fly is possible again and even booting from USB is no problem at all!

Note that the way MCNLive is put on an USB stick has slightly changed. There is no wizard for this anymore, but you can simply dd the iso image to your stick, just like Mandriva One. You should even be able to use Mandriva Seed to put the image on your stick! :)

As I said, there are things which we didn't got running (which doesn't mean it won't return in a next release, just not on "Kris"). For example persistent changes with a loopfile are not possible. Also the boot screens are not graphical (the boot menu still is though).

Since you need a lot more memory to run Mandriva 2010.0 with KDE 4.3 then you needed to have in order to run Mandriva 2007.1 with KDE 3.5, we added a bootoption 'useswap', which searches your drive for swap partitions and enables them, giving you some more space to breathe in. ;)

The name "Kris"

Kris is offcourse the nickname of the original MCNLive maintainer, so in some way this can be seen as a tribute to her work. On the other hand, a kris or keris can be a weapon, which is processed in the wallpaper.

ISO contents

MCNLive Kris is based upon a fully updated Mandriva 2010.0 release, with KDE SC 4.3 as desktop environment. SMplayer is added for your multimedia needs and since we do have a remaster option, we added K3B to enable you to burn the remaster directly. :)

Firefox is the default web browser but you can use Konqueror from the menu if you wish.

As you see, "Kris" is not filled with loads of software, but since you are able to remaster it you can easily create your own version with the pieces of software you need. :icon_idea:

Beta testing

While most should work fine, it can perfectly be that it won't work on your hardware. Besides you might find some issues we haven't found ourselves. If you run into problems running "Kris", please let us know by replying in this topic. Please do not reply with "it doesn't work", but try to ground your reply. One small side note: if your hardware doesn't work on Mandriva One, it probably won't on MCNLive either.

In case of hardware problems, the output of this command can be very helpful:

lspcidrake -v

Putting "Kris" on USB

As said, you should be able to use Mandriva Seed, but if you're not affraid to use the command-line you can easily use the dd-command. Note that you put the image over the whole stick, not on a partition so you lose all contents of the stick!

dd if=mcnlive-kris-beta1.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=8M && sync

Where you change sdX into the device of your choice. Please be careful selecting the right device or you might overwrite your harddrive. ;)

Download

You can download the beta on one of these mirrors:

I'm glad I can tell that the MCNL is building a new MCNLive version based on Mandriva 2010 , the new developer is HighKing.

It's still called a alpha5 version but I'm typing this from MCNLive installed on a aspireone110 netbook. If everything goes well there will be a public beta version for testing.

Some time after Chris quit working on MCNLive, she left the mcnlive.org domain as well and removed all html content from her site.

Short after, someone reclaimed the domain and put a copy of the site back online.

Though we are grateful for that, we would like to put some new news on the site, or at least a message stating that it's not the official site anymore. Problem is... we have no idea who put the site back online so we don't know who to contact.

If you have any idea who is behind mcnlive.org right now, please let us know.

Hi folks,

after some months of not not being able to work on and improve MCNLive I would like to announce officially my decision to stop with the development of MCNLive. The reasons are changes in my personal life, preferences about spending time.

Creating LiveCD's based on Mandriva and working on the mklivecd scripts kept me very busy the last 4 years. It has been a great experience, in particular working together with testers and contributors was wonderful.

MCNLive is the project of http://www.mandrivaclub.nl. And I hope they will find someone/people to take over from me and fill the gap as soon as possible. Help is really appreciated. Please get in touch with MCNL here:

A while back, anna (Chris) came to our forum and we all got to know each other. But then anna could not be here as often because she was developing a live cd, back in the days when Mandriva was not really on that road yet. But in true open source style, MCNLive has been developed based upon Mandriva. When anna asked for our help with a user board, we thought it was a great idea. So we have offered a forum for MCNLive. They currently have a Dutch board, but would like an English speaking board which they can count on. So we are gladly working with MCNLive. Enjoy!

(May 6, 2007)

A new edition of MCNLive, code name "Delft" is out, a fun release based on Mandriva Spring 2007.1, lacking any office or work-related software packages that would seriously distract your mind. A portable Linux live system for CD or USB drives, with some smart wizards to get the best out of a Live system. Add software, set it up on your pendrive, run it entirely from RAM, write to NTFS partitions, create your own version on-the-fly, switch languages, make all changes persistent.

KDE 3.5.6 with a set of internet, music and video applications, games and more: Opera 9.20, Midnight Commander, K3b, gnomad2. English (default), Dutch, French, Italian pre-installed.

3D desktop - Beryl, Compiz and Metisse - for Intel and ATI cards, with nvidia 2D joy only. Included WIFI drivers. 100% Mandriva 2007.1 compatible. If you really *must*, install it on your hard disk. (My advice for serious work: pick simply the best, the real Mandriva Linux.)

Get your copy, a complete list of installed software and the more technical release notes at

We hope that you enjoy this new release.
