Just installed 2011 beta2 and brought it up to date, found everything I've tried so far, but it has a couple issues...

urpmi --auto-update brings this 3.6 GHz quad core machine with 4G RAM and 7200RPM drives to it's fracking knees.

I read some msg traffic from January about fsync on every file being the default and how that may/may not cause issues...

But this is insanely slow, running win7 on a 386-in-qemu slow....

the machine is basically thrashing the HD and is unusable if urpmi is running updates.

The machine flys running 2010-2.

It runs pretty darn good and looks great running cooker as long as I'm not doing anything with RPM.

(video slow--seems not to have working xv etc on the nvidia driver,(videos are slideshows) but I haven't investigated that.)

Is there a fix in the works for RPM?

I've been trying to install Cooker on a spare partition using these instructions. I'm using the chroot method, which seems the easiest. When I get to the part that say "Copy vmlinuz and its initrd from /chroot/boot/ to /boot," however, I find the vmlinuz in /chroot/boot, but no initrd. I throught that initrd got installed along with the vmlinuz, but apparently not.

Does anybody know how to create this?

During the past year when I installed Mandriva on 32 bit computers I included win32-codecs, libdvdcss2, and gstreamer0.10-pitfdll. Today when I installed the 2010.1 RC2 free CD on a 64 bit laptop I noticed that three packages in my list are missing from the x86_64 repositories.

I have activated the following repositories.

PLF Free

PLF Non-free

Main

Main Updates

Contrib

Contrib Updates

Non-free

What problems can I expect to encounter, if any, from the lack of those three packages?

I have tried a number of times to install the new beta but always with the same result.

During the post install settings, when ever I click "test" in the graphical setting up, It fails and drops back to a text format that suggests rebooting.

Can't say I am very impressed with a beta release that cannot complete an install process.

The DVD was burnt at slowest speed and also K3B confirmed data matched correctly so I do not suspect the DVD.

I did manage in the first attempt to complete the install but only because I did not do the Graphics test. However when I then booted into the OS, I got that same stupid nonsense (as I did on the times I tried out the betas of 2010.0 ) where you were presented with a popup that asked to install something or other and even though you did so and whatever was installed, the same stupid popup returned. Back then I gave up and I don't intend to waste too much more time on this beta either.

Anyone else try this beta, if so what did you experience.

Cheers. John.

After fighting with fglrx for a few days (and almost pulling the trigger on a new NVidia board) the radeon driver now rocks.

glxgears ~1500 FPs, no artifacts. Hulu works. (hulu==slide show using the fglrx driver)

KDE4 effects//compositing not working, but IIRC it may with XAA, not with EXA.

Upgraded to cooker in the process, but MAY work on 2010.0 (will try this weekend, now that the issues are nailed down)

MythTV, DVD/video playback work flawlessly scaled up to HD res, low CPU useage.

(Have not tried HD streams yet)

Mplayer (current) has a (known/fixed upstream already) bug in it that causes it to hang unless run by root, current dragon player works very well.

fglrx... ATI version won't compile/install, cooker version wouldn't build either.

(The build bug is fixed in Debian already, it's a one liner)

Changing the res and monitor in drakconf/XFdrake works, but MDV tools will not create totally working 2D/3D config out of the box.

Will post up my xorg.conf in the AM, am (at work), used a xorg.conf from an arch linux thread (google HD4200 xv)

As promised, the xorg.conf:

(I don't think the dri mode section made a difference, the "only works as root" problem is in mplayer)

I am trying the 2010.0 Beta with a full install. I can't access my Windows XP NTFS partitions at all.

Is this a bug, is this normal? Can I do something about it?

I am a beginner (experienced but still beginner) and I don't know about "mounting" the drives. The right click menu says "mount" the drive, and I tried it but nothing happens. Is it about "miunting" the drives? (I don't even know what that mounting is).

Because some people struggle to get large files down reliable with ftp, and Mandriva will not release torrents themself, nor Par2 files for mending broken files. I also think exposing it at linuxtracker might get some more people interested to try.

Hi all,

I recently stumbled over a strange problem of similar type Urza reported of:

Unable to login as *any* user, I still can login to the system (Mandriva 2007 cooker) as root. Trying to login as normal user from console (i.e. "login: " prompt, the system kicks me out immediately. By lowering processor speed I was able to see the small error message: It says there is no home directory for that user, but it actually exists! There is no kernel message giving any hint on "F-12 console", no valuable information on /var/log/messages or /var/log/secure.

When trying to "su <user>" after root login, the only error is "could not open session". By googling I found out that this could be caused by file permissions wrongly set. So I've checked the following (which should be okay, AFAIK):

/etc drwxr-xr-x

/etc/pam.d drwxr-xr-x

/etc/passwd rw-r--r--

/etc/shadow rw-------

It does not matter wether trying to use an existing user in /home or after creating a new one with "useradd", so it's likely to be a system wide error. Last option that came to my mind is to use strace. I tried

"strace -oout.txt su <user>" and found the following:

[...]

open("/etc/pam.d/other", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 3

Congratulations Mandriva group

I am testing Mandriva 2010 beta

Although I am new user in Linux I used Mandriva 2010 beta easily

Mandriva 2010 Beta is so fast, you did great job

Here is my suggestions about Mandriva 2010

*There are no description in individual packages, it explains things like "important, very nice, nice, maybe..." You can be professional linux user but you can't know everything about linux, so it is important point

*Installer must have some themes, I like dark themes and somebody may like bright themes so there must be some option we can change the theme of installer

*The installer must ask if I am a home user or a server because in the individual packages I see some server options selected by default. And it should ask which type of computer do I have(desktop, laptop, netbook)

*I want to change block size when format my hard disks, it is possible in some other distributions but unfortunately it is not possible in Mandriva, I know it is not important point but maybe u should try

*There must be an option that we can search packages with description in Mandriva Control Center Package Manager, it only search things by name. This stuff is most important like hell

Some Bugs

*my installer freezes when I click test button on graphic hardware settings

*my installer freezes when I click reboot button in the end

*when I use compiz it my window decoration disappear

*something is wrong in KDE 4.3, when I hover an icon on desktop it automatically show previews in spite of I closed show previews option in desktop settings but I know it isn't about Mandriva, it is about KDE because I got same problem on another KDE 4.3 distribution

that is it, thank you again, sorry for horrible terrible English, I try to learn

have the best days and nights

Hi all,

I've found some issues in recent - cooker version of Mandriva,

which seems to exist already a long time in some older versions.

1. Reboot hangs, cause it cant unmout /usr partition due to the programs

have some files open on it. Lsof tells me, that I have that problem

with gam_server and or probably something else which I need to discover.

by using killall gam_server in halt script on /etc/init.d I could

make reboot possible. Next day I've got same problem again and I don't no

yet if it is related to the system update which deleted my patch from halt script

or some other program which create the same effect.

Please look carefully - something must be wrong.

2. At boot time I'm getting the notification that certain locale has not been found.

It's clear - the /usr partition is not mounted yet.

I didn't found how to turn parallel boot off, cause it's annoying to see it every time.

Thx

I have been having so many problems with my Cooker install just recently that I decided to start again with a fresh install of RC1. It has been the most difficult configuration of an instllation that I have had for a long time, and it looks as if the problems I am having with Nvidia are still there. This is what happened.

I installed the Gnome version this time so as to avoid KDE4 which I don't like - did I tell you that before? The install itself went OK, at least this time I got a graphical login (first time for months on Cooker) but only the 'nv' driver which just doesn't work with my screen setup. Normally I then install the Nvidia driver myself but this time I thought I would try it with the built in tools, so I fired up XFdrake (in a terminal login so that there was no running graphics to screw things up). Most distros these days would by now have mentioned that there was an additional driver available, but not Mandriva, in order to 'prompt' it I had to click on my graphics card (as if I were going to change it to something else) then select it again and only then did it mention the additional driver - not good. I elected to install it and it went away and downloaded all the required extra packages and then proceeded with the install. After a few seconds it came up with 'Install failed reverting to open source driver'.

I then decided to use my normal method of installing Nvidia myself. This failed too. I booted back into the nv driver to get graphics back and then poked around in rpmdrake and found this. My kernel was 2.6.29-6.1.1, my kernel-devel and kernel-source files were 2.6.29-8.3.1 and my kernel-header files were 2.6.29-7.4.1. Is it any surprise that the poor old Nvidia driver can't install with this jumble! The point to bear in mind here is that I have had no input in this, it has entirely been the work of the installer + XFdrake, not me messing around and not updates either because at that stage I hadn't done any. I was able to sort this out by installing the correct kernel (which was available all the time), so why wasn't XFdrake able to do this? Again not good.

I would normally put this down to it being a testing distro, but if it is at release candidate stage it should be capable of better than this.

I have not had any kernel updates come up yet so I don't know if it will handle these by itself, it certainly didn't on my previous install, that was its biggest problem.

The other problem that I had with the previous install was Virtualbox puel not running. I have managed to solve it on this install, but what a performance. Before I could even install it I had to trawl around the net for obscure python libraries that are not installed in Cooker, then to make the VM run I had to manually edit the makefile, then install vboxdrv over again. It doesn't sound much when you write it like that, but if you throw in all the searching I had to do to find the solution, again it was not easy.

I know that if I reported this as a bug to Mandriva I would just be told that it was 'upstream' and therefore nothing to do with them, but when you release it there are going to be a whole lot of people that want the puel version running on Mandriva and they are not all going to be as patient as I am. I also had a lot of problems with AWN, which I won't bore you with because again that is 'upstream', but people are going to want to run that on 2009.1 as well.

Overall I was not really impressed, this was almost back to the bad old days of Linux when you spent a day installing and a couple of months to get things working! That kind of performance is not acceptable any more.

Having said that it now has Xfce running over Gnome and everything seems to be working, but it hasn't been easy. Both Mint and Pclos, which I have installed recently, were much easier to work with.

EDIT. If the above wasn't bad enough I now find it doesn't produce any sounds - not a peep. Bloody pulseaudio again I presume

EDIT2. OK I solved that one as well. It just depends which one of the 37 different installed volume controls you choose to work with.

Something weird happened last night on my desktop PC. I can't remember exactly what it was that I was doing, but I think I was trying to user krdc to connect to a server I setup here. Out of nowhere, the screen locked up and went black except for my conky instance I had running (this usually happens when I'm shutting down or rebooting, but here the PC froze).

So I then tried to reboot. The boot fails with a few errors:

Mounting local filesystems: can't create lock file /etc/mtab~1451: No space left on device (use -n flag to override) [FAILED]

So what I did was burn a One 2009.1 beta CD and loaded it up. I mount the / partition so I can check it out and see why it's all of a sudden full. When I right-click on the folder representing the mounted / partition and select properties, it shows only about 939 MB being used, but "device usage" at the bottom is "0 B free of 4.3 GB (100% used)." How can this be?

I've also checked each folder in the mounted / partition, and together they all seem to total approx. 928 MB. I cannot, for some reason check the "/root" folder in the mounted partition though. Maybe it's all in there? I don't know, but maybe you guys have some ideas on what could be causing this?

Let me say that, I'm using LVM across two SATA drives on this install, and I should easily be able to just increase the size of the root partition. But when I try to resize the partition, it tells me all data on the partition will be erased. Is this because LVM support is not available on the One CDs?

I prefer Opera as a first choice browser, but it tends to have difficulty with Flash on some occasions, so I always keep FF around as well. I just had a look at 3.0.6 on cooker today and I couldn't believe how bad it is. Is this just me or is anyone else having these difficulties?

Here is a list of things that don't work that I have found so far (I doubt I have found everything yet!)

Speeddial doesn't work. It gives a warning every time I start up and displays not diallers at all.

Foxmarks doesn't work. It says it is syncing, but it never does it just carries on forever.

Bookmarks don't work. Not in any way. If I import them from an html file it says it has finished but no bookmarks ever appear. If I click on 'Bookmark this page' the bookmarks are still empty.

History doesn't work. It is always empty no matter how many sites I have visited.

Flash doesn't work. Not in any form. My Opera install on cooker is working OK with flash at the moment but not FF, I can't get a peep out of it.

I have done the usual uninstall/reinstall, but it was all exactly the same.

It is not a big issue for me since I don't use Cooker that much or FF for that matter, but it would make me think twice about putting 3.0.6 onto any other installation.
