A few things that have changed.

We no longer have community blogs (was never really used)

We no longer have a portal page.
We can discuss this, and decide whether it is needed (It costs money)

Announcement from the host:

We've continued to have intermittent problems with db4 (also known as db3 as we merged both servers into one) in the last few days. So far the problem doesn't appear to be related to XFS specifically but more than likely a memory problem or something with mysqld itself. I'm leaning more towards a memory problem. Testing memory would create a large outage so we're going to have to move the mysqld services to a temporary machine. Unfortunately the server we normally use for situations like this is being used but the service it hosts was planned to be moved anyway.

I'm working towards getting this temporary server back online so that we can properly troubleshoot db4/db3. I'm shooting to get this done by the end of tomorrow or the latest by next Monday. Unfortunately, I suspect that the mysqld service on the machine will fail again between now and then so please be patient with us. I apologize for not having a better backup plan in place but we're busy as always.

UPS Repair

----------

The UPS for the B210 Data Center at the OSL has experienced a capacitor failure. The failure is not service interrupting but needs to be repaired. The repair window will be tomorrow (20090326) from 10-12PM PDT (1700-1900 UTC). During the repair the UPS will be placed in bypass. Power to the room will not be interrupted.

Power Upgrade (DMZ 2hr power interruption)

------------------------------------------

On Saturday, March 28th, OSU Facilities Electricians will be performing work on the Kerr Admin B side power. The window is 7-9AM PDT (1400-1600 UTC). The work is necessary in order to complete the power upgrade project for the B210 Data Center.

The building power will be secured about 7 AM PDT (1400 UTC). The room generator will start and room power will transfer over to generator power. If there is a fault with the power transfer, the building power will be restored and the work will be rescheduled.

When the electricians finish their work, they will restore power and verify that it transfers from generator back to facility power.

For those projects that have servers/machines in the DMZ (the one-off non-rackable servers/machines), we will need to work with you to power off and power on your servers. For the other 95% of you that host at the OSL, your power *WILL NOT* be interrupted during this maintenance window. I might be able to keep some critical servers in the DMZ online during the outage, but I doubt we have enough time on the UPS for the room to make it.

For those projects who host their machines in the DMZ, please either contact us via IRC or send an email so that we can work with you to ensure your machines are taken care of. Again, almost 95% of you are completely fine during this outage. All the projects that host in the DMZ should know who they are.

just in case there's a problem.

Accounts of your everyday life may fascinate readers on the other side of the world. You could be the next Bridget Jones or Adrian Mole… :)

Broadly speaking, you can write about anything that you could post in Talk-Talk or Everything Linux, but consult an admin or mod if you're in doubt.

Use the Blogs link at the top of the page to see the current list of blogs. Above the list, there's a Create a Blog link. Use this to create a community blog; if you already have an external blog, you can link to it here. If you enable friendly URLs, you can reference your blog as https://mandrivausers.org/blog/username.

After some discussion amongst the administrators, and talks with various places, it has been decided that it's time for mandrivausers.org to find a new home.

We have been offered (at least) 5 years of hosting at http://osuosl.org on a Xen box with 10GB's of space. The move will occur later this week, with an estimated downtime of 4 hours (specific date and time to follow). In some places this downtime may be longer due to propogation of the DNS entry out to the rest of the world.

We already have the board up and running at our new host, so the plan is as follows:

Turn off this board. Anyone visiting will get a message informing them of what is occuring and an estimated up time.

Sync the SQL database from this board with the board at the new location, to be sure that all the most recent data is there. Myself, paul and mystified all keep backups of the board - so in the unlikely event that something is lost one of us will surely have it.

Open the new board, do some basic testing to make sure things are as they should be.

Update the DNS entries to point to our new home.

Drink many beers

This is the basic plan, there are likely to be a few other small things that will need to be done.

Please note, this move is being done because it's a great opportunity for growth of the board.

At this time, we would like to thank Kernow Webhosting for the hosting that they've provided us, and all the support they've given us when things got bumpy. It's been greatly appreciated :)

Hi,

We wil be moving the board to a new server over the next few days. We will also be upgrading the board to a stable, but RC release of Invision board 2.00.

There will be a period of down time, but it shouldn't be for very long. Once the switch takes place, you may notice some recent posts or topics that are missing. It will take a day (probably less) to update the database with the latest posts and also add in our logo and other board features. If you use a skin other than the default, you may have to wait for it to be added/installed.

The new board is packed with new features that will enhance your visit here, but some will take time to be put in place, i will make a post of some of the new features and how to use them after the upgrade takes place. Please be patient!

Because of some new data base tables that have to be added, this board will be upgraded first, and then moved.

1.0 ADMINISTRATOR GUIDELINES AND DUTIES:

1.1 The role of our administration is to ensure the enforcement of this policy and to make decisions for the board. Admin decisions, as a group, are final.

1.2 Prior to implementing a decision that effects the board as a whole, the admin will give the other Admins and Mods time to provide input. Suggested time is at least 24 hours. If the Admin feels the decision needs to be implemented immediately, then the Admin will do it immediately and will post the reasoning for doing so.

1.3 Admin handling a decision makes the decision. The admin handling a case of a user being banned, will gather input from other admins/mods and then decide.

1.4 In the event that an admin's impartiality is compromised, that admin may not make a decision. A majority of the remaining admins will make this determination.

1.5 An admin decision may be over-ruled by 2/3rds of the remaining admins not involved in the original decision.

1.6 If an Admin violates guidelines, the decision enacted by the Admin must be reversed immediately. The other Admins will determine whether guidelines have been violated. The offending Admin may then present a case to have the decision implemented again.

2.0 MODERATOR GUIDELINES AND DUTIES:

2.1 Primary responsibility of a moderator is to enforce the guidelines, make needed corrections based on guidelines, and send PM's to users. They also post their actions in a mod forum.

2.2 The administrators and moderators of this forum have the right to edit, move or remove any topic at any time should they see fit. Removed topics are placed in a another forum, pending review.

2.3 A member found violating the guidelines will receive and explanation and if necessary, a warning. If said member ignores the warning or does not accept the warning, the member's account may be suspended by an admin pending review.

2.4 Any issues with users are turned over to admins. If a PM is sent to a user and the user responds back in any fashion other than accepting the PM, the mod posts it and admins will handle it. The only response that a mod should make is to state that the case is being turned over to an admin. Mods can continue to offer opinions through the Mod Forum.

2.5 In the event of a dispute with a moderator that you feel is not being resolved fairly, please send a personal message (PM) to any of the forum admins. Personal messages may be shared with other moderators and administrators.

2.6 Moderators will offer opinions on actions being implemented by admins. Mods can also suggest changes and gather input from other mods.

2.7 Moderators can manage their own duties and Moderator Forum as a group. This includes adding/removing new mods. Admin's will be considered a mod at this point. Their opinion counts like any mod. So if there is a poll, an admin can vote. Admin's will implement the decision.

Mandriva Users Board Posting Guidelines

1.0 INTRO:

1.1 The mission of the Mandriva Users Board is to provide a Linux help board, by providing expert assistance, furthering personal knowledge of Linux, and providing a community to relate to other Linux users.

2.0 POLICY:

2.1 You agree, through your use of this Forum, to obey the following policy as set forth by this board's administration. Failure to do so may result in your account being suspended and your service provider being informed. In severe cases, the suspension will be permanent.

2.2 You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, racist, hateful, threatening, sexually-orientated or similar material.

2.3 You agree not to post any material which is knowingly false, inaccurate, and/or defamatory.

2.4 Personal attacks, harassment, or behaviour which invades another member's privacy will not be tolerated.

2.5 Political or religious debates are permitted only in the OTW forum. Membership by request of an administrator. The general board does not allow debates on such subjects, unless it is related to Linux.

2.6 You agree not to post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or by this forum.

2.7 Posting of direct links to executable software is forbidden. You must post a link to a web page that provides a link to the download. Special arrangements may be worked out with a moderator/admin.

2.7a. Any member uploading illegal, commercial (not free), or malicious binary or rpm packages, that could cause harm to a user's system, will be permanently banned.

2.8 Rudeness, argumentive or childish behavior toward a moderator/admin will result in your account being suspended pending review.

2.9 Spam, self promotion, or other forms of personal or commercial solicitation is not allowed, unless related to the promotion of Mandriva or this board.

3.0 ETIQUETTE:

3.1 The guidelines of this board apply to all posts on the board, whichever forum they are in. Please adhere to them.

3.2 Debates should be limited to one or two points for discussion. More than this in one topic creates confusion and misunderstandings.

3.3 Any time a topic begins to get repetitive, the thread may be considered to have run its course and be reviewed for possible closure.

3.4 Points arising from a discussion that warrant their own treatment should be the start of a different thread.

3.5 Off Topic and OTW are places for our members to ask questions of one another and to get to know one another. Have fun!

3.6 If a thread has been locked or removed, please do not start another one on the same topic.

3.7 Any user who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to contact a moderator immediately by personal message (PM).

3.8 Above all, stay on topic and adhere to any ground rules set forth by the topic starter.

[4.0 DISCLAIMER:

4.1 Please remember that we are not responsible for any messages posted.
As a follow-up to our latest flash regarding the upcoming decision of

the European Council to legalize software patentability in Europe,

here are some fresh news and information on what you can do to help.

If nothing changes, tomorrow, Tuesday May 18, the European Council,

that is, the European body which represents all the governments of the

European Union, will vote in favor of a directive that will legalize

software patents in Europe. Last September, faced with a similar

choice, the European Parliament voted major amendments to the

directive text drafted by the European Commission, actually rejecting

software patentability. However, the Council, ignoring all of these

amendments, is going to vote in favor of a text that is even worse

than the initial version of the Commission.

Why can the Council take a decision which will be so harmful to the

European software industry? Unlike the Parliament, which is a place

open to the public, where Members of the European Parliament have

had time to study the proposal and hear many positions on the issue

in order to take a well-thought decision, the Council is a closed

body where, due to the alledged complexity of the subject,

representatives of the governments have handed out the file to

committees of experts.

These experts, who re-drafted the text and wrote position papers on

why to vote it, are in fact mostly representatives from the national

patent offices, backed by the heads of the legal departments of some

big industrial companies, all of whom have a common interest: more

patents mean more power for them, irrespective of the harm that will

be done to the economy at large, and even to their own companies. In

the name of "the Industry" and of "innovation", they manipulated the

political decision-makers to make them believe that the new text did

not allow to patent pure software, that it was a good compromise between

the Commission and Parliament texts, and that not all of the

parliamentary amendments could be kept because some of them were

illegal with respect to international treaties such as TRIPS. All of

this is plain lie.

In fact, if voted, the text of the Council would lead to a situation

where big companies with large patent portfolios use these to lock

their respective markets and prevent competition from innovative SMEs,

and where "intellectual property" companies that do not create any

software use their own patent portfolios to collect license fee rents

from everybody. This is the situation which is happening in the US,

putting at risk its successful software industry. This is what may

just happen in Europe in a few months.

However, it is not too late. Because of growing pressure from computer

professionals and from the public, and because they get more and more

feed-back from the media, political decision-makers begin to get aware

of the issues, and to have doubts about the sincerity of the patent

lobby. In some countries, they have taken the file back from the

patent offices

http://lwn.net/Articles/85379/

http://kwiki.ffii.org/?SwpatcninoEn

and some countries of the Council have just decided to switch from a

voting procedure without debate to a voting procedure with debate,

as the text gets less and less consensus among the members of the

European Union.

You can convince even more of them to reject software patentability.

In order to do that, please take some time to read about the issues

at stake, and spread the information across your friends and business

contacts, the press, your members of the parliament and your government.

It is essential that elected policy makers get back into command of the

situation and do not leave the patent offices decide alone.

Here are some texts which can help you to present the issues to the

media and to convince policy-makers of all countries of the European

Union.

Mandrakesoft would like to alert all users and the software community at

large about a recent clandestine attack by proprietary interest through

covert adoption of EU Software Patent Legislation.

In direct contravention of the recent vote by the European Parliament to

curtail Software Patents, the Irish Presidency of the European Union has

surreptitiously reinstated unlimited software patent language into the

text of a statement to be adopted by the European Council of Ministers

on Monday May, 17th, without further debate!

The new text, if adopted, will extend Software Patents to every piece of

software, including computer programs, data structures, and process

descriptions. This will directly harm most software firms and all Open

Source projects unable to pay patent licensing tribute, and amounts to

an appropriation of the public domain by proprietary interests. A

direct beneficiary will be a new class of pure patent companies without

any real business or contribution to employment, which will use the

threat of litigation to extort payments.

Of note is that a sponsor of the Irish Presidency is Microsoft,

currently building a large patent portfolio. If the Software Patent

text is adopted, Microsoft may use this patent portfolio against Linux

and other Open Source projects.

Mandrakesoft would like to forewarn and mobilize its users and the

software community about the very real threat of such a law. Please

contact the media, your political representatives, and your government,

and urge them to vote against unlimited Software Patents and to revert

to the previous European Parliament position.

Some of you may have noticed that when you log in the skin you've chosen has now gone back to the default so you have to reselect the skin again. This isn't due to the fact that the skins aren't "holding" it's due to the fact that I'm having to make changes in the server. I hope that is the last of it and you won't have any more problems but if you do please pm me and let me know which skin you are using.

Thanks and sorry for the inconvience.

(Already)

# Mandrake Linux 9.2 Installation Notes
# Mandrake Linux 9.2 Usage Notes

Mandrake Linux 9.2 Installation Notes

    * Potential hardware damage doing install with LG-based CD-ROM drives

    * When doing a network install, the network card does not seem to respond

    * Unable to install security updates during install

Error scenario: Installing 9.2 and being told unable to install the base system and subsequent reboot reveals that CD-ROM drive is physically dead.

Why: According to LG Electronics, their ODD (Optical Disc Drive) products do not support Linux nor do they test with Linux. Unfortunately, many Dell computers (possibly others) come with these CD-ROM drives.

Update Nov, 14th 2003: LG has released some firmware updates to various model numbers (they are noted specifically in the list), and a restoration procedure for previously affected drives. All users are encouraged to upgrade the firmware on their CD-ROM systems prior to installing or upgrading Mandrake Linux 9.2. They also provide a recovery procedure for the damaged drives.

Firmware updates & restoration procedure are available from LG's website and from Dell Support. To find the updated firmware on LG web page, click on "Product Support" then select "Device Driver" from the left-hand navigation menu, then select the "CD-ROM" product and you will be presented with different zip files that contain the fixed firmware updates. The firmware can only be applied by booting from a MS-DOS 6.0 boot floppy. Any difficulties applying the firmware updates should be sent to LG Technical Support. Note that intructions on how to apply the update are in the downloadable file "Dead.gif". There also seems to be some difficulty downloading the .zip files with Konqueror, so you may want to try Mozilla instead if you are having problems with the download. On Dell's website, click on "Downloads", type "mandrake" or the drive's model name in the search field, then click Go" and you will be presented with a firmware list.

If you do not have an MS-DOS floppy, you can use a FreeDOS floppy image and write it to disk by using "dd if=FDBOOT.IMG of=/dev/fd0 bs=1440k".

NOTE: Based on information we have received from LG Electronics' technicians, only CD-ROM models are affected by this bug. DVD-ROM/R/RW and CD-RW devices are not affected.

Error scenario: When doing a network install, on some recent machines, the network card seems to not respond (ie. no DHCP response received).

Why: Certain motherboards still have problems with enabling APIC.

Solution: When booting the installer, press F1 at the splashscreen and type "linux noapic" to disable APIC support.

Error scenario: When trying to install security updates during installation, after having used multiple CD-ROMs, the security updates are impossible to add.

Why: A bug prevents importing the pubkey file containing the GPG signature of the security updates packages.

Solution: Format a floppy disk with a DOS filesystem (in Linux, you can use the command "mkdosfs /dev/fd0"). Copy patch.pl to the floppy disk. Remove the floppy and reboot using the Mandrake Linux 9.2 CD1 to do a CD-ROM installation. During boot, press F1 at the splash screen, then place your floppy disk that contains patch.pl in the floppy drive. At the prompt, type "patch", then follow the installation as usual.

Mandrake Linux 9.2 Usage Notes

    * Autofs fails to use automount maps in LDAP

    * New installs of 9.2 on networks with large subnets appear sluggish or instable

    * Problems accessing Windows/Samba shares and printers after an upgrade

    * Problems with OpenLDAP queries after upgrade

    * The KDE desktop doesn't appear for users on desktops using NIS or LDAP for authentication

    * Unable to create a boot floppy from drakfloppy

    * When configuring the sound card, alsaconf doesn't start.

    * When enabling ACPI in kernel (by removing acpi=ht from boot options), the system freezes very early

    * When plugging in a USB webcam (some Philips models, maybe others) the system locks solid

Error scenario: Autofs fails to use automount maps in LDAP when running against OpenLDAP 2.1 or later

Why: autofs does not do an LDAPv3 bind and OpenLDAP 2.1.x requires LDAPv3 binds by default.

Solution: Until autofs supports LDAPv3 binds, enable LDAPv2 anonymous binds by adding:

allow bind_anon_dn bind_v2

to the /etc/openldap/slapd.conf configuration file and restarting the LDAP service.

Error scenario: New installations of Mandrake Linux 9.2 on a network with a large subnet (>1000 possible addresses in the subnet) appear sluggish. Additionally, embedded routers connecting 9.2-based machines to large subnets may have stability problems.

Why:The lisa network browsing service is started by default, however the default configuration generated by the init script enables pinging of the network. On networks with a subnet allowing more than 1000 IP addresses, the pinging can cause an overflow of the ARP cache on the machine, and additionally the list service occupies excessive CPU time. Similar effects can be seen on embedded routers that route between a 9.2-based machine running lisa and such a large network. Additionally, the script does not correctly detect when settings have been saved by the KDE Control Center module for lisa, so the settings (which could avoid this) do not take effect. (re: Bugzilla #5244)

Solution: If you do not wish to have network browsing, disable the lisa service using, as root, service lisa stop; chkconfig lisa off or save the updated initscript in /etc/rc.d/init.d and restart the lisa service.

Error scenario: Problems accessing Windows/Samba shares and printers after an upgrade to 9.2 from an earlier release

Why: To make provision for users who require samba3 to access Windows 2003 shares and printers, samba and samba3 use alternatives to install unversioned links (ie. /usr/bin/smbclient, /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb) to the versioned binaries (ie. /usr/bin/smbclient2, /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb2) using the alternatives system. However, on a package upgrade, the old unversioned vinaries still exist when the alternatives are updated, so after the removal of the old package the links do not exist. (re: Bugzilla #5889)

Solution: Run the command update-alternatives --auto smbclient as root.

Error scenario: After upgrading from a previous release, the LDAP server does not answer queries that used to work, or has problems accepting LDAP modifications from an LDAP master running an older version of OpenLDAP

Why: OpenLDAP 2.1 enforces schema checking by default, and will not answer queries with data that violates any schemas or any of the schema rules.

Solution: Temporarily disable schema checking until you have adjusted any entries in your LDAP database that violate the schema or schema rules. Common problems are the use of the deprecated "account" objectclass, LDAP entries with multiple structural objectclasses, or entries that lack a structural objectclass. Schema checking can be disabled by adding:

schemacheck off

to the /etc/openldap/slapd.conf configuration file and restarting the LDAP service.

Error scenario: [/bThe KDE desktop does not appear for users on desktops using network authentication systems (NIS and LDAP)

Why: KDE is unable to resolve the user id to the username with the time required, and is unable to start kdesktop. (re: Bugzilla #4882)

Solution: Install and start the nscd service (urpmi nscd; service nscd start) and make it start at boot (chkconfig nscd on).

Error scenario: When creating a boot floppy from drakfloppy, it fails with an error message from mkbootdisk indicating that there is not enough disk space on the floppy.

Why: The kernel is too big so it cannot fit with the initrd and the boot loader on a 1.44MB floppy disk.

Solution: Use either fdformat or superformat on the command line (you may need to install the fdutils package for the latter) to format your floppy to a bigger format such as 1.7MB.

Error scenario: When configuring your sound card, alsaconf does not start but instead prints an error message such as "Error, dialog or whiptail not found".

Why: The alsautils package should have required newt or cdialog, because alsaconf needs one of them, but it does not. These packages are only installed when one chooses gdm as the display manager instead of the default kdm. (re: Bugzilla #6039)

Solution: Install either cdialog (urpmi cdialog) or newt (urpmi newt).

Error scenario: When enabling ACPI in the kernel (by removing acpi=ht from the kernel boot options), the system freezes very early

Why: There seems to be a bad interaction with Local APIC, which is enabled by default in the kernel. This can be seen by adding vga=0 to try to see the last kernel message before it locks solid (a message like "Looking for DSDT in initrd... not found"). This seems to happen with certain HP laptops. Other reports also indicate that if you remove AC power from a laptop (ie. Dell latitude C640; possibly others) it will freeze requiring a power off. (re: Bugzilla #5821)

Solution: Add "nolapic" to the kernel boot options to resolve both issues.

Error scenario: When plugging in a USB webcam (some Philips models, maybe others) the system locks solid

Why: There is a kernel bug when auto-loading the snd-usb-audio module.

Solution: Upgrade to kernel 2.4.22-18mdk in updates (MDKA-2003:020)

Hi,

A few people have been asking recently "who runs this board?"

The domain name mandrakeusers.org is owned by Paul.

The domain name mandrakeusers.com and mandrake-forum.org is owned by myself.

The board is currently hosted on my server.

The database is backed up in three different locations.

No one person controls this board

We have four administrators "in charge" of the overall running of this board.

Any Admin can make minor changes to this board, "as and when they see fit"

Important or major changes are discussed in the closed Admin forum, or by e-mail or PM.

At least two Admins must agree for major/important changes to take effect.

In many cases, the Moderators and Development team are invited for their input/ sugestions.

The Moderators have been entrusted to move/edit/delete posts or topics, as they deem necessary, according to the guidelines.

We currently have a report button that is located on the top, right side of each post next to edit. It is to be used for reporting violations of the guidelines as listed here http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=477 When someone reports a post, a link, with any message is sent to all four admins. We would like to continue to have this available since it is supposed to alert us to potential problems so that we can deal with them immediately. Unfortunately it is being used frivolously and at this moment we are considering disabling it. Please think before you report a post as to whether or not it is a violation of the guidelines. Do not use this as a means of expressing opinions regarding a post or to simply to "see what happens."

Hullo,

You may have experienced some slow down in this boards performance lately.

To rectify that, we are going to use a new type of php board, this board is faster, and has more user features than our current phpbb board.

In the next 24 to 48 hours or so when you visit here, you will be redirected to :

http://mandrake-forum.org

which is our backup site, and home to our download area.

Posting is enabled in all forums, and you can login with your existing username/password.

Please view the new features available to you, but wait for the redirect before posting your questions there. At the moment only the Moderators and Admins are logging in to ensure the transfer goes OK.

As in life, there maybe one or two hicups or problems in the first few days, but we hope that you will find the new site a pleasant experience.
