Hi guys,

This might be a little rude, but I'm hopeless when it comes to designing, and using any form of graphical program.

I need two logos to be done. One I have got the basic design sorted out, I just can't make it look nice. The other I'm yet to think about.

Is anyone kind enough to lend a hand?

Thanks

I put the latest Mandriva 2011_x86_64 iso onto a usb flash drive and booted it. I noticed that the application launcher menu button does not bring up the usual list of applications, but instead fills the whole screen with an application menu showing rather large icons. Is this change coming from KDE or was it done by Mandriva? Can the application launcher menu be changed to the way it was in Mandriva 2010?

I also noticed that pressing ctrl-alt-F1 gets me only a black screen, not the text console I expected. Pressing Alt-F8 should bring me back to the KDE desktop, but this did not work to recover from the black screen. Is this a problem with Mandriva 2011 or my computer?

I figured I'd slap a sticky into this forum for people to list good tools they've found that relate to the Graphics/Art/Design/etc. topic, along with any neat tips. If you want to discuss tips, please start a thread about it ;-). I'll start with some of the obvious ones:

The GIMP: http://www.gimp.org (Image Manipulation)

Blender: http://www.blender.org (3d rendering)

Good day all,

I've recently put together my most recent pet project which is a Nano-ITX computer complete with WiFi and TV tuner. My intent was to have this little computer attached to our second LCD TV in the rec room to allow guests and family at Xmas to surf, watch TV, watch movies, etc.

I've installed Mandriva 2010.0 and this works well running KDE even on the Via C7 1.5GHz CPU. I've given some thought and have tried Enlightenment E17 as it claims to be relatively configurable.

My goal is to have a UI that allows people to complete the above mentionned tasks without needing to feel confused over learning a new OS. I've noted some installable applications/UIs such as Moblin which is in the right category. However, Moblin 2.0 is really slow and almost impossible to use.

I prefer to use something that runs on top of Mandriva 2010, and not a brand new OS. The TV tuner and WiFi both need specifically compiled drivers and I don't want to mess with some optimized distro with no ability to build from scratch.

     Any recommendations?

I installed Koffice from MCC under Mandriva 2010. After that I right click in Dolphin and go to the Create new submenu. It the shows me a list of documents I can create, including those for OpenOffice, HTML, and plain text. However, I see some spreadsheet, presentation and text documents that 1. have no icon, and 2. have no extension (when I click on them a compressed file apperas, but it has no extension).

I am a very organized person, so I don like having a mess of entries in Mandriva's main menu. That is why I always edit it. I categorize everything and move entries and submenus from place t place. Has anyone noticed a problem with Mandriva's menus? I've been having this since mandriva 2008 (or even before, I don't remember). Has anyone noticed that moving entries or changing submenus messes the whole menu? Is there a way to solve this?

Hey guys, new here. I wanna share my work wid you. The project I'm working on: Mac4Lin - Mac transformation pack for GNOME

Mac4Lin version 0.3 Released!

24th October 2007

Mac4Lin is back! A new version, more changes, better looks and an overall more polished product. Please read changelog for information of changes in this version. It gives me immense pleasure to inform all that downloads have crossed 110 GB till date!

Mac4Lin now comes with a unified documentation in PDF format. Please go through this for illustrated installation instructions. Also some entities like GTK theme/Pidgin etc. now include two versions. Hence individual README files are only included if there is any need to convey release specific important information to the user which the generic documentation does not include. Read the README file for more details, in such cases.

With the release of GNOME 2.20, there have been issues reported with the Icon theme. Work is going on to make the theme compatible with GNOME 2.20 (found in OpenSUSE 10.3/Ubuntu 7.10 - Gusty etc.). There will be a separate release of Icon theme for GNOME 2.20. Users of this version can replace the original ver.0.3 Icon theme with the new one, which will be released soon after this release. GNOME version can be checked by clicking System Menu > About GNOME. Other components of this package are reported to work with GNOME 2.20. The installation of GTK Metacity theme and Cursors is almost same execpt that the Theme Manager in GNOME 2.20 has a new look.

Thanks to Victor Hugo Casals for the Safari skin, M.Lettner for the panel backgrounds, Calande for the font guide, Mitko for nm-applet icons, Vish for Grub and Buu700 for Usplash screens. I also thank all those who tested the pack and everyone who are directly or indirectly involved in this project.

The project was conceived on an Ubuntu system but since its dependent on GTK, it should work on any distro with GTK.

Apply it, flaunt it, enjoy it! :)

I can set up a panel on the left side of screen OK. What I cannot do is drag and drop icons on either of the two panels (usual bottom and the added side) as I usually can do. I can drop widgets OK, but that is not what I need/want.

When I was trying out the 64 bit Spring, I had no such problem.

In 2010-Spring I have set it up the same style as my 2010.0 working system.

I have the same Nvidia driver installed in both OSs and image settings are the identical. You can see from the two screen shots that one is very poor quality (the one in 2010-Spring) and the second one is Normal and AOK (2010.0). All the images in 2010-Spring Picture Frames and the desktop wallpapers suffer this same ugly effect. I must point out that the images are from the same folder and used by both OSs. I have done 3 clean reinstalls of 2010-Spring with a clean /home each time and still get the same results. All updates are installed to this date.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and does anyone have suggestions as to what might be causing it in 2010-Spring ???.

From what I can understand, we have been left with KDE4.3.2 in the official repos as Mandriva work on the new KDE4.4 for 2010.1.

This hasn't stopped MIB from creating packages. Discussion has occurred on official Mandriva forum Click Here

The link to the MIB instructions for installing KDE4.3.5 is HERE

I myself are considering upgrading, as my KDE4.3.2 isn't quite as stable as my KDE4.2.4 on 2009 was.

Security concerns using the MIB repos should be minimal I expect. Can anyone please confirm this for me?

I have been looking for a program to do some basic, quick and dirty photo edits. I know you can get the Gimp to do just about anything, if you have the time to learn it. My problem is I don't have the time, hence the search.

Any way, after some Googling, one suggestion is Fotoxx. I install

fotoxx-9.5-1mdv2010.0.x86_64

on Mandirva 2010 64 bit system. The problem is the Fotoxx crashes, with a segfault when you try to load a jpeg file once the program is loaded. I have discovered the program can load an image if you load it at startup time from the command line. Example 'fotoxx image.jpg' loads the file image.jpg, and you can edit it.

The segfault is annoying, it means you can not load images after launching the program.

I have removed and re-installed, the problem remains. Has anyone else tried this program? BTW there are two versions on the repos, both segfault loading images. Any thoughts on how to trouble shoot this?

Hi all!

I upgraded my 2008.1 version to 2010.0.

I'm using KDE and the theme/style that I've set for buttons and checkboxes, etc. is "Oxygen".

BUT.. this style is obviously not accepted by all windows. So, for instance not by OpenOffice. The window style looks like the very old FreeBSD style, you know? The colour is very grey and the buttons very simple and rectangular. Or for example, when I click on "browse files", the window that appears has the same old style, not the Oxygen style. Or the standard buttons and dropdown boxes in firefox look different as well.

What shall I do? Does somebody knows whats wrong or how to fix this? I can upload pictures if you want.

Thank you,

I just did a new install of of Spring 2009 Gnome. Everything is working well with the exception of the Screensaver. I am able to test each screensaver and they work. However when the system invokes a Screensaver, I just get a blank screen. It seems to put my monitor in standby. I also have "lock screen" enabled, and that does not work either.

I confirmed thw screensaver doesn't work with compized enabled or disabled.

When the screensaver is invoked, it actually cuts the signal to the monitor as if in powersave mode. I have lock screen enabled, but it never asks me for my password.I have power settings at "Never". I didn't have this problem with KDE Cooker, Mint 7 or Suse 11.2 64bit.

[solved]

I use Matlab+Simulink a lot, and have many windows open. Even though both KDE and Gnome panel have an ability to group those windows together, the list could be quite large - easily more than a dozen windows. In all my previous Mandriva + KDE installations, I was able to bring, say, a scope window up to the foreground by clicking on an icon in the simulink model - this was much easier than going through the panel and the list.

After moving to Ubuntu, I found that this was no longer possible. Clicking a scope only highlighted a tab in the panel, but does not bring the scope window to the foreground. Some googling suggested that that this was a new design feature in Metacity to prevent new windows from stealing the focus.

What a surprise is to find out that KDE has adopted a similar feature. If I click a scope in a model, all I have is a blue tab in the panel, and a flashing window name. I run Mandriva 2009.1 with KDE 3.5, but windows behave exactly the same as in Ubuntu. Is there a way to setup windows to behave the way I used to?

KDE 3.5 control center has a menu for Window-Specific Settings, with a single entry "Disable focus stealing prevention for XV". This sounds like a right place to look, but I have no clue what to do.

And I love it.

Only after I read the documentation on kde.org did I understand what it's all about.

Kde4 has been built to be the leading edge of desktops, and I think they've done well. Is it the leading edge? I don't know, haven't used a mac for years, vista (well just like felt a flash xp, to be honest) and gnome, well I haven't touched that for years either.

For me, KDE4, particularly my 4.2.4 version, is rock solid. Very functional. Sure I miss konqueror over dolphin.

I guess I'll have to wait and see if 4.3 gets packaged up for Mandriva.

Hello,

I usually fill the gaps in my needs for running the computer by programming more or less complete/clean bash scripts, with a bit of zenity if needed, and by putting lanchers upon them.

Now I'm at a point where zenity is not enough. I want several GUI controls in a single window. BUT…

My family life, and my professionnal life, make it so that I have very little time for programming.

So I need a very quick way of programming a GUI, and of programming the event handlers. And I don't want my programs to require an exotic runtime or launcher. So it'll have to be either Perl, Python, bash, or Tcl/Tk (installed by default on any mainstream Linux), or a tool that generates a binary (if that exists).

My first attempt has been with Visual Tcl; it's a bit rough around the edges, but still usable, and stable enough. Unfortunately, this tool has not been updated since 2007, and suffers from incompatibilities with Tcl 8.5 or newer (and we're at 8.6…). This can be patched (see “Tristan 2008-09-29â€) but still, I was disapointed to see that the much-advertised “widget†array did not work (any more?)…

So I decided to search for more GUI designers… I found nothing else related to either bash or Tk, the two languages I had in mind for fast programming. My need for speed rules out C/C++, as well as Java (the language I'm most familiar with).

Looking further, I found seemingly great wxWindow-related tools, for Python, a language I'm willing to learn as it seems to fit my criteria (which is: as few written lines as possible to get the job done)Â :

— Boa-Constructor: nice first impression although the GUI is a bit overwhelming, but it is way too unstable. The IDE crashed at each of my ten attempts to achieve the same simple app I had programmed with Visual Tcl, and before I could even attempt to program event handlers.

— PythonCard: clean (and stable, it seems) and simple, but too much so : I miss the wx sizers.

Looking still further, I finally found some hope :

— wxGlade: at last something that I can use! Simple and to the point. All is there without fuss and with no crash. It is just an UI designer though, that generates a python file that you open in your favourite editor and where you program the event handlers at the right places. Although this is OK with me, I'd like something more integrated, where you take no risk of breaking the GUI code while programming the event handlers, nor loosing your handling code when re-generating the UI; that's because eventually, I'm thinking of using what I'll have found for teaching the basics of programmation to my son. Anyway, this is so far my best finding.

— wxFormBuilder: I did not try yet (not in Mdv's repositories); I'll have to.

— WideStudio: I did not try yet (not in Mdv's repositories); I'll have to (but I really wonder what this MWT is, how it integrates the desktop, and what needs to be installed at runtime).

And in case I find nothing appropriate, I keep bookmarks for Code::Blocks, Gambas, Lazarus, Anjuta, KDevelop and MonoDevelop.

What do you all use for quick and not-so-dirty GUI-app programming? Do you know what tool would suit my needs, if possible with a good learning potential for kids?

Yves.
